    HYMN 587

HYMN OF PRAISE THE PRAISE OF GOD

  • LITURGY OF SERVANTHOOD Pastor Lane

O Lord, our God, your wisdom and power are beyond our comprehension. Yet our hearts know you intimately. Our love for you and our awe of you join together in our praise to your holy name.

You are the one we turn to when we hear your invitation to be your disciples; when we feel the call to servanthood. You, O Lord, provide strength and wisdom for each day and hope for the journey.

It is by faith in you that we respond to your call to serve. We believe that you are our source of love and provide the resources for loving.

We believe that you redeem not only our lives but also our actions so that our small human offerings have divine results.

We believe that your Spirit empowers us to be all that you created us to be for your purpose.

    T. CASSEL (167 A)

Holy God of all creation, give us vision, love and nerve to respond to our first calling on this earth to care and serve. Show the world by our example how to live each waking hour, as we strive to humbly follow, sharing your creative power.

    © IBOC/MMF

Yet the call to serve can, at times, be overwhelming. The need before us is more than one person can handle alone. We thank you, Lord, for calling us to work as one body. Your Body is made manifest in us as we work together to serve your children.

Lord, many people in our community show your love through their actions.

    4

  • They shelter the homeless. They feed the hungry. They accompany the elderly. They champion the battle with mental illness. They help others become better parents. They donate their blood, their sweat, and their personal belongings.

Lord, many people in our church generously offer their lives to your service. They teach your word. They visit the sick and home- bound. They provide fellowship for our church family. They serve as leaders and decision makers. They make worship a meaningful experience. They support our ministry in prayer.

Let us identify the organizations in our church and community that make up the tangible Body of Christ.

(Speak aloud the names of church and community groups that provide loving service.)

Lord, we thank you for these people whom you have joined together for your purpose. We thank you for people who live what they believe and believe what they live. We thank you for the Spirit of Christ which dwells in such people in our church and community.

By your grace, Lord, we stand among those who will hear you say, “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, sick and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” And we will say, “Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked or in prison?”

And you will assure us, Lord, with your words, “Just as you have done it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

  • T. CHALLENGE

Into the world Christ Jesus sends us, to love like he loved wherever we go: just down the street, into the cities,

crossing the borders of culture as though nothing, but nothing, could keep us away –

this is the challenge of our mission.

Into the world Christ Jesus sends us to make disciples wherever we go:

teaching his truth, seeking commitment, welcoming strangers and watching them grow.

Warming cold hearts with the flames of God’s love – this is the challenge of our mission.

  • ✝ PRAYER OF MEDITATION ✝

    Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany

Holy God, you gather the whole universe into your radiant presence and continually reveal your Son as our Savior.

Bring healing to all wounds, make whole all that is broken, speak truth to all illusion, and shed light in every darkness, that all creation will see your glory and know your Christ.

    Amen.

Today is the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany. During this Epiphany season, we have the opportunity to ponder the significance of the Savior’s birth and to reflect upon the salvation that he brings us. This Epiphany time continues until Ash Wednesday which will occur on February 17.

  • ANNOUNCEMENTS

At the end of our service today, we will honor Mr. Paul F. Knouse, Jr. who has served as Calvary’s Administrative Assistant for over 10 years. With gratitude to the Lord, we acknowledge Paul’s faithful and dedicated service to the Calvary Congregation. We wish him God’s richest blessings as he retires from ministry with us. Paul, we will miss you!

The Joint Board met on January 25th to discuss church business since their last meeting. Due to the COVID crisis, the Joint Board feels it is wise not to have an “in-person” church council meeting which was planned for Sunday, March 7. With the guidance of our Provincial Elders’ Conference, we have been asked to hold a smaller ZOOM Church Council meeting with Joint Board members on February 15, 2021 to formally postpone the March Church Council until November of 2021. In light of COVID and our inability to have an election in which all communicant members can fully participate, the current Elders and Trustees who were to retire from the board in 2020 will continue to serve through December of 2021. New Elders and Trustees will hopefully be elected at the November 2021 Church Council meeting for three year terms. By extending the term of the current board members by one year, we can more efficiently preserve our 3 year rotation system.

As most of you are aware, the March Council is our reporting council where reports from the previous year’s ministry are presented to the congregation. These reports will be prepared and will be made available to the congregation by calling the church office and asking for a copy. When the reports are ready, we will let you know so that you can obtain a copy. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Pastor Lane, Chair of the Joint Board, Bob Snyder, Vice Chair of Elders, or Spencer Bullins, Chair of Trustees.

  • We thank the Calvary members, including the Calvary Band Trio, with Brian Lott, Director, Carl McKnight, and Seth McKnight; the Choral Ensemble from our choir; our organist, Mary Louise Kapp Peeples; and the staff, who are leading worship this morning via the live stream broadcast.

In 2020, Calvary’s donations to Sunnyside Ministry totaled nearly 1.5 tons of food. Due to COVID-19 the method of collecting had to change. We now collect every other month on the 3rd Tuesday from 4-5 and on the 4th Sunday 1-2. Drive by donations are made behind the church during these times. This is a great time to stay socially distanced while getting to visit with some church members!! Our first donation of 2021 is today from 1-2. If these times don’t work for you contact Donna Cheek to set up another time at 336-399-0857.

Limited in-person worship is available today. If you need a copy of “Procedures for Attending In-Person Worship,” as developed by the COVID-19 Task Force and approved by the Joint Board of Calvary, please let one of the ushers know.

Weekly Bible Study continues this Wednesday, February 3rd at 6:30 p.m. via ZOOM. The ZOOM address is:

Reservations for 2021 flowers in the church are still available. If you would like to request a particular Sunday in 2021, please notify the church office.
