“I Alone Am Not Able!” Numbers 11:1-23 (esp. v. 14)
Way to few Pastors come to the place early in their ministry where they realize they cannot do alone what God has called them to do with others. The Bible never speaks of great men of God who were ―lone rangers‖ - great followers of God, great servants of people, great leaders of leaders, but never lone-rangers. Ultimately, every great leader learns to share ministry with others. Consider, from this passage, the need for and nature of shared ministry in the church.
I. The NEED for shared ministry (vv. 1-15) - Why We Need It! A. The PEOPLE need shared ministry (vv. 1-10) 1. When complaining is more common than commendation (v.1) 2. When greed is more common than generosity (v.4) 3. When ―our best days are behind us‖ (v.5) 4. When dissatisfaction dominates conversations (v.6) 5. When families are broken and blended and burdened (v. 10) B. The PASTOR needs shared ministry (vv. 11-15) 1. To alleviate feelings of FRUSTRATION (vv. 11-13) 2. To eliminate feelings of ISOLATION (v. 14) 3. To abbreviate feelings of DESPERATION (v. 15)
II. The NATURE of shared ministry. (vv. 16-23) - How We Do It! A. It is a ministry THROUGH PEOPLE (vv. 16-17) 1. Through COMMITTED people (vv. 16-17) 2. Through CONSECRATED people (v. 17) B. It is a ministry TO PEOPLE (vv. 18-20) 1. To a DOUBTFUL people (vv. 18c, 20c) 2. To a DISSATISFIED people (v. 18b) C. It is a ministry of GOD (vv. 21-23, esp v. 23) 1. The Lord’s POWER IS UNLIMITED (v. 23a) 2. The Lord’s WORD IS UNRESTRAINED (v. 23b) God’s work is always initiated by Him. He quickly calls His obedient servants to join Him in His work. Soon, God’s work is underway and God is meeting the spiritual, mental, emotional, financial and social needs of people through the witness and obedient service of those whom He has dispatched—those who are willing to share ministry. — rrc

―How Soon we Forget!‖
In a January 13, 1984 proclamation, President Ronald Reagan designated January 22, 1984 as the first National Sanctity of Human Life Day. The date was chosen to coincide with the 11th Anniversary of the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court case that first legalized abortion-on-demand throughout all nine months of preg-nancy. President Reagan issued the proclamation annually thereafter, designating Sanctity of Human Life Day to be the third Sunday in January, which represents the closest Sunday to the original January 22 date. His successor, George H.W. Bush, continued the annual proclamation throughout his presidency. Bush’s successor, Bill Clinton, discontinued the practice throughout his eight years in office, but Bush’s son and Clinton’s successor, George W. Bush, resumed the proclamation and did so every year of his presidency. President Barrack Obama has discontin-ued the practice during his presidency in favor of proclaiming June as ―Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month‖ (what a contrast!). The proclamation of National Sanctity of Human Life Day has been heralded by National Right to Life as ―a wonderful statement of what the pro-life movement is really all about.‖ Productive activist groups like NARAL (National Association of Repeal of Abortion Laws) and Planned Parenthood (Americas largest provider of abortions) have denounced it, saying it signals a desire to roll back the rights of women (of course, this excludes the rights of the little, helpless, ―Woman‖ in the womb). I hope all of our PLBA churches will adopt their own pro-life / Sanctity of Hu-man Life proclamation and that our Pastors would seriously pray about preaching on the subject, January 15 or 22, 2012. We must not allow this present generation to ever forget that we are endowed by God with the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

A NUGGET FROM MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
As I write this, I am sitting in Missouri in one of the most special places of blessing God has ever given us the privilege of experiencing! During our Sabbatical so far, we have done a fair amount of traveling, catching up on seeing family members we haven’t seen in quite awhile and doing some ―fun‖ things together as a couple. However, this week is quite unique. Some friends told us of a place which especially caters to pastors and missionar-ies when they have a need for a quiet, get-away space, which is what we were looking for and very much needed! We are staying in an absolutely beautiful and quietly restful ―cabin‖ (with all of the modern conveniences of home EXCEPT for TV, wifi, and cell phone reception)! As we have been here in the midst of tall oaks and total quietness (except for playing Christ-mas carols on a portable CD player), sitting in front of a fireplace, eating meals we cook ourselves (well, I cook for us!) whenever we want, reading, talking, praying, sleeping, just being quiet, talking about plans for the future in our lives and ministry, and even catching up on 2 weeks worth of travel laundry, it has been just what we needed. BUT, admittedly, it has also been an adjustment!!! We have not heard a word of news in 5 days so far! We assume that if some national or world tragedy occurred that our hosts here would come tell us! We haven’t even turned on the radio! Our hosts have even gra-ciously left us alone except to knock on the door once with a plate of warm-from-the-oven Snickerdoodles topped with a Christmas card and bow! To-morrow we plan to drive a few miles to attend church where a friend is the pastor...and they don’t even know we’re coming and we will have to drive around town to locate their church! We have not seen any television or used any electronic equipment except for to play a couple of games on an iPad. Email has oddly come in, but we have no way to answer! FaceBook is not an option so we have no idea what our friends are doing! We had one phone call that randomly managed to get through the ―No Service‖ notice on my phone and we both jumped when it rang---we hadn’t heard that sound in 4 days! Thankfully it was a call we needed to take! It just occurred to me a little earlier that I could write this article on my laptop without using the internet but would have to wait to send it in for publication until we re-turn to the electronic world! The adjustment? To realize how much of our lives have been tied to the high speed, high tech, instantly gratifying (well, discounting those frus-trating computer moments we all have) way of living! To realize how we sometimes let that world rob us of ―real‖ conversation. To realize how we don’t have enough still, quiet moments with the Lord. To realize we are having to re-learn those skills we didn’t realize we were losing! The pluses? To realize how much we love each other. To realize how much God loves us to so graciously provide such a place for us from peo-ple we don’t even know. To realize how much we love and miss our imme-diate family. To realize how much we love and miss all of you who have given us this time. To realize how much our tired bodies needed rest and ALL of you--God, our families, our friends--have gifted us with renewal. Best of all, to ―BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD!‖
Marsha Cook, WM&M Leader
