Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Eulalia Parish,

    Happy New Year

    2021

As we are finishing our journey of the year 2020, we realize that this past year was not easy for all. Many of us have felt what the Israelites felt when they were in the desert for 40 years (read Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy): sense of loss, frustration, anger, etc. In reality, we have felt that God was with us in the midst of those difficult days as God was with the Israelites during those 40 years. The year of 2020 was not what any of us expected at all. Good News! Christmas celebrations have seen many first–timers (since March) of our parishioners who were at Masses. People in darkness have seen the light of the world. The year 2021 is a year of HOPE and RESTORATION of FAITH. How shall we prepare ourselves for it? We need to look forward with the ex-pectation (as we lived through Advent) that God delights in answering our prayers. “Come, follow me (Mtt 4:19)”, Jesus invites us to join HIM to continue our journey into 2021 with joy and peace. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you (Mtt7:7).” Confident in God’s omnipotence and love, let us rekindle the fire of faith. Our parish of St. Eu-lalia is the dwelling place of God where we can be nourished and strengthened both spiritually and physi-cally. “Fiat”, the great YES that Mary said to the Archangel Gabriel made it possible for the invisible God to become visible. Our yes to God in the same way will bring miracles into this world. 2020 has become a marker for history and 2021 will witness incredible works of God. May the Mother of God, the feast we celebrate on January 1, 2021, intercede for us so that our families and our faith in God be strengthened.

    God bless,

    Fr. John Chen

  • W ’ Y M /H S ? After having heard Fr Chen’s story of his healing, as he de-fines as a ‘true miracle’, we have received many responses, calls and emails, from parishioners who felt that God was speaking to them personally as they were feeling discouraged in their own journeys. Others felt inspired and encouraged. Some felt a connection with their own healings or miracles. We feel that during these uncertain times it is always good to look at how God has been with us in the past and will remain with us in the future. Tell us your miracle stories, great and small for a new ‘Miracle’ corner in our bulletin. It could be submitted anon-ymously by mail or email, or you are welcome to call us at the office and we are happy to assist you in your writing.

  • First, let me wish you all a very Happy and Blessed New Year. After 2020 I am sure we are all looking forward to a different experience in the coming year. It has been a challenge for most of us, some more than others, and we are all hoping that something different awaits us.

Perhaps, more than anything, we recognize how little control we have over our lives; the pandemic and all the accompaniments have indeed shown us this. However, we have also had blessings. Perhaps we have found new ways to help others or ourselves. Maybe we feel closer to God because of the need to be closer in this time of un-certainty. A famous Protestant preacher from Garden Grove, CA, the Rev. Robert Schuller, once quoted, "God brings us to our knees in order that we look up." Something even the most resilient person in 2020 has probably done.

As we enter into the fray in the new year we can look with some optimism that the pandemic may abate. We can perhaps begin to once more resume a normal life after enough of us have been vaccinated to control this out of control beast called Covid-19. This wish may be at the top of our list of prayer wishes in this New Year.

It is the topic of prayer that I want to visit in this first weekend of 2021. One of the reasons we pray so diligently and intensely in petitionary prayer is feeling the "absence" of God somehow. We want God to resolve a problem for us and focus intensely on invoking His presence to solve the problem. Of course, when we do so, we make a serious error. This being that God is somehow absent in our lives. This could not be further from the truth.

When we think of prayer in terms of the Church and God's mystical presence in our lives, we have to recognize His presence is pre-eminent. This presence is made known to us in two ways in mystical prayer.

The traditional method is what is known as kataphatic mysticism or prayer. This prayer or understanding reveals what we might call conventional prayer forms, as the quote below illustrates:

"The kataphatic is what has been revealed or manifested about God in creation, the scriptures, the sacraments, and the personal experience of God in prayer."

The other form is the inexplicable and imageless prayer form known as apophatic mystical prayer. This prayer occurs when we experience God in a way that is impossible to explain, but, nevertheless, we are affected by His presence. Silent prayer is often how this occurs, particularly when we are in a total state of surrender to God's

will, being available without a prayer agenda of our personal wants, and letting the God which resides in us all do the praying for us. Contemplative prayer forms are good examples of apophatic mystical prayer, the prayer of silence in particular.

"Be Still and Know that I am God" Psalm 46.

In this New Year perhaps we can be-come open to these other prayer forms which are exposed through the Doctors and mystics of the Church over the ages; that we may expose ourselves fully to the love of God in all aspects of our lives, not just when we yearn for His help.
