How to celebrate A New Year

There is more than one way to celebrate the coming of a New Year. Many readers re-ported snugging into bed early for a good night’s sleep, while others partied till the wee hours of the morning. Many shared the time with family and friends either gathered around a feast or sharing a ceremonial moment. Neighbors from the Elkhorn area, Mick Evans and Mike Sheets (pictured at top), took to their dual sport bikes for a New Years Day ride in the woods. They landed at Tom Rock, a 3,400 ft elevation peak in the moun-tains immediately south of Mill City. From here you are looking north over Gates to Mt. Horeb and beyond. You can also see Evans Mountain, part of Henline Moun-tain and Rocky Top. (Photo cour-tesy of Mick Evans) Dozen of midnight revelers (right) congregated at the Mill City Eagles to laugh and dance till the clock struck twelve. (Photo courte-sy of Bob Yates.) Members of the Community Roundtable group met in December at Mill City City Hall to discuss their efforts at bettering the entire Santiam Canyon community. Here are a few highlights:

“Parents Nights” start Jan. 14The Santiam Canyon School District Par-ent Teacher Organization has been working to bring informational “Parent’s Nights” to our community. The first, brought to you by “Family Building Blocks”, a local pro-gram that serves families and young chil-dren will be held on Tuesday, January 14 at 5:30p.m. at the SJSHS cafeteria. Dinner will be provided! Please RSVP for the event so that an accurate food order can be made. To RSVP email [email protected] or call Santiam Elementary School at (503) 897-2368 and leave a message for Angela Moreno. The event will provide information on the Family Building Blocks program, which includes services such as: • Home Visits • Therapeutic Classroom • Respite Care • Family Nights • Parent-Child Interaction Groups • Referrals to Community Re-sources In addition, representatives will be speaking on childhood brain development. “Parent’s Night” is open to everyone. If you or someone you know could use the assistance of Family Building Blocks, please plan to attend. For more information about the Fam-ily Building Blocks program visit their website;www.familybuildingblocks.org. Canyon Life Museum expandingFrancis Thomas spoke of the efforts of the Historical Society to transform the original railroad depot on NE Wall St. into an extension of the existing museum. “It’s the oldest commercial building in Mill City that still stands,” said Thomas. The project has been ongoing for sev-eral years and right now they’re decid-ing what color to dye the interior

wood (they decided to use dye rather than stain because it’s a more historically ac-curate technique). They’ve also been ap-proved to use the old “wavy glass” in two of the windows that they are replacing -”If we can find it,” said Thomas.

Neighborhood Watch updateMill City now has six areas involved in the local Neighborhood Watch programs. They are looking for residents in the few remaining areas that don’t have the pro-gram established yet to volunteer to par-ticipate. City Recorder Stacie Cook said that there have been increased patrols by the local police and several arrests have been made lately.

Sweethearts Dinner plannedSandy Lyness mentioned that the Lions Club will be having their annual Sweet-heart’s Dinner on the Saturday after Val-entine’s Day. She is also President of the Chamber of Commerce and said that the business group has changed the name of their monthly networking group from Greeters to Business Showcase. The events are open to everyone and they are looking for local businesses who would like to host an upcoming event.

Canyon Calender success Michelle Gates spoke about the first an-nual Beautiful North Santiam Canyon Calendar, indicating that the first printing had sold out in a week and that the sec-ond printing was now available in stores: Lyons Timbertown, Mehama True Value, Rosie’s Coffee, Mill City Pharmacy, San-tiam Treasures (Mill City), Mt High Gro-cery & Detroit Market, Idanha Store and Marion Forks Restaurant. “It was really well received,” said Gates. Time to clean up the townCity beautification was also a topic at the Community Roundtable meeting. Letters have been sent to the owners of the vacant buildings on Hwy 22 in Mill City, request-ing their participation in helping increase the attractiveness of the city. It was asked who owns these buildings, and what can be done to convince them to invest some maintenance to attract more tourism visitors and middle class families to the area.

Electric car charging station Stacie Cook reported that there will be a new electric car charger station going in at Mt. Edge Cafe in Mill City. It has been ap-proved by the city planning commission, and ODOT intends to go through with their plans.

Master Parks Plan Open HouseThe Master Parks Committee has finished review of the final draft and for-warded the document to the Planning Commission. An open house has tentatively been set for Janu-ary 30, 2014 to allow the public an opportu-nity to view the document prior to holding a public hearing. “It’s a conceptual plan,” said Stacie Cook. “It basically says here’s what we have, what we need and where we think it should go.” The community Roundtable group meets monthly on the 3rd Friday at 8am; contact City Hall for more information. All are in-vited from any community of the Canyon.

Celebrate 2014!

Several of our readers sent in photos of their New Years celbrations. Clock-wise from left: Gates area kids: Julia Miller, Avery LeBard, Tanner Peters,

Amelia LeBard, Noelle Miller.--A few folks in the upper Santiam Canyon celebrated the eve of 2014 at the Idanha Grill with gourmet hors d’oeuvres and prime rib, thanks to restaurant owners and hosts Ben and Jeff. New faces were welcomed, including the new owners of the River Mountain RV Park, Jim and Laurie Preston (and son Vince), as well as some familiar faces like Rick Ladbury and Jeanette Hartwell of Detroit. It was a “New York” theme event - meaning the revelers celebrated the ball drop at 9pm on the east coast, which gave many of them time to join other late night events around Idanha and Detroit.--Friends and family gathered at Josh Weather’s home in gates for a New York theme party as well.--Revelers at the Mill City Eagles Lodge (pictured below) partied the night away to the rambunctious tunes of the Rock-hounds. All Eagles Photos thanks to Bob Yates, the winner of Beautiful North Santiam Canyon 2014 Calender!!

Marilyn S.GeesmanSeptember 26, 1948-December 16, 2013

Marilyn was born and raised in California, moving to Oregon In 1972. She was employed at Fairview Training Cen-ter from 1973 until its closer in 2000. During her employment she worked on Martin Cot-tage, Chamberlain Cottage, Byrd Cottage. Johnson Cottage, Central Staffing and Cen-tral Operations.

Marilyn was a loving, caring, and compas-sionate person with a tremendous sense of humor. She enjoyed setting on her deck and watching all the wildlife that came into her backyard. In addition, Marilyn assured that they all have food to eat. Marilyn loved Harley Davidson motorcy-cles and music. In 1998, her and close friend Sue Birge traveled to Sturgis for the big rally held there. While rock and roll music was her love, the Rolling Stones was her passion. As a teenager she attended one of their con-certs and her love for them grew from there.

One could argue that she was their number one fan. Marilyn was preceded in death by her par-ents Charles and Bertha Geesman. She is survived by a very large family of friends and will greatly missed. At Marilyn’s request no service will be held. A celebration of life will be held later with good food, good friends and Rolling Stones music. Arrangements entrusted to Weddle Funeral Services, online condolences at Weddle-Fu-neral.com.

Welcome to 2014! We wanted to find out what you had going on so we spent a few days out and about. As it turns out, last year some of you went to exciting places like Barcelona and others found big-ger places to live. For the coming year, some are looking to travel more and keep on living better. Read on for more of your neighbors reflections: What is your 2014 New Years resolution?Ann Vaughn at Cedar’s Restaurant in Detroit would like to find her Jack Russell terrier named Badger that has been missing. Justin Hartwell from Detroit just wants to keep living. Miranda Patterson at Mountain High Grocery didn’t really have a resolution since she breaks them anyway. Vince Benson of Idanha wants to eat more Jelly Beans. Jea-

nette Hartwell of Detroit would like to travel more this year. Best of luck to those who had their resolutions. What was the best thing that happened to you last year?Juan Morales from the Mehama NAPA got to move into a nice three bedroom house with his wife and kids. Bob Lay-man and his wife from Detroit took a cruise to Barcelona with two other couples - Jim and Melva Davidson’ as well as Denny and Phillis Mills. They got to visit Rio, in Brazil and the Canary islands along the way to Bar-

celona Spain. And lastly, Linda Stirling (a visiting writer from Camas, Washington) got

number one best seller “Confession of a Sunday School Psychic” on Kindle. Congratulations to her! Is there one thing that you’re looking forward to in 2014?Walter Budd, owner of Mehama True Value, is hoping to sell the store and retire. Don Wiltse, owner of Don’s Gas in Mehama, is just hoping to make it through another year. Jeanette Weikum from Idanha is trying to move into a bigger house with more room.Editors note: We don’t know what Amy

Flores of Mill City (pictured here) resolves to do, but we do know that she likes to celebrate traditionally. with a bottle of bubbly!

The Mill City Volunteer Firemen want to recycle your Christmas tree again this year. On January 11th firemen will be go-ing around to pick up your tree in the Mill City Fire District. They will be asking for 4 cans of canned goods that they will be donating to our local food bank. The fire men ask that you call by January the 10th to get on the list. Call the fire hall at 503 897 2390, if there is no answer, leave a message with your name, address and

phone number so we can make sure to get you scheduled. Until then make sure that you are taking care of your Christmas tree by watering it everyday. If your tree starts to dry out remove it from your house immediately. Dry trees can catch on fire very easily, and make the fire spread to other areas of your home. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and here’s to a safe and a Hap-py New Year.

Pie sales lead to fire truck ride for first grader

Six year old Zach Long of Mill City got a chauffeured fire truck ride from his home to his classroom, all because he sold pies. He sold enough of them to family, friends and neighbors that he won 5th place in a Santiam Elementary contest to help raise funds for field trips and special events.

When asked what his favorite part of the ride was Zach said, “when I got to honk the horn.” Zach’s big plans for 2014 are to play baseball and hang out with his friends. No word on any future ambition to become a fireman yet.

Mud slide brings pizza slingers, diners

into actionThe week before Christmas a mass of mud and rock, clinging to the cliff near Giovanni’s Mt. Pizza finally let loose, eventually covering both lanes of Hwy 22 on a blind curve. “Traffic was skidding to stops, and veering into our parking lot, it was pretty scary” said Starr Lutz, a Giovanni’s employee. Bob Netter of Gates and Greg Lewelyn of Scio were just finishing their lunch when they saw the melee. “They just jumped right up and went out to direct traffic,” said Lutz who noted they were well prepared with orange vest and a manor of authority. “ I can’t say enough good about them, they were life savers, they really knew what they were doing.” Meanwhile Gio’s employees Chase Howard and John Sorrick jumped into action as well, taking a broom and shovel and clearing one lane of traffic to allow travellers to pass. After several phone calls by Lutz to various agencies, ODOT eventually showed up to take over and clear the road completely.

The slide, now cleared, reached into both lanes forcing traffic to cross into the parking area of Giovannis , just west of Poppa Al’s. Photo by Jim Brotherton.
