Sandos & Marconfort goeseco-friendly and says

‘no’ to plastic SANDOS & Marconfort are helping toprotect the environment by achievingtheir goal to eliminate 12.4 millionitems of plastic waste per year. A recent study published in the

journal Scientific Reports, quantifiedthe expansion of a floating garbagepatch in the Pacific Ocean, betweenCalifornia and Hawaii, which is fourto sixteen times larger thanpreviously thought. It occupies anarea about four times the size ofCalifornia and is estimated to contain1.8 billion pieces of rubbish. Themain problem of plastics is that, bitby bit, they are fragmented toreduce their size. Thisfragmentation causes the largerplastic items to becomemicroplastics, which are ingestedby fish, seabirds, cetaceans, causing health problems for marinelife and entering our food chain. The hotel group has made a

decision to replace all plastics thatthey use in hotels withbiodegradable materials orrecycled cardboard. The new policy will mean the

elimination of the following at allSandos & Marconfort hotels: 1.8million straws, using biodegradablestraws as an alternative at therequest of guests; 1.4 millionplastic cutlery, replacing it withstainless steel cutlery orbiodegradable cutlery for specialactivities; 750,000 plastic plates thatwill be replaced by biodegradableplates; and 8.5 million plastic cupsthat will be replaced by recycledcardboard cups. The hotel chain revealed that

special bins will be provded forrecycling of the cardboard cupsand part of this consumption willbe replaced by reusablepolycarbonate cups. In addition tothis, 484,500 units of amenitiesmade of plastic will be replaced bybiodegradable material.Taking into account the above

figures, this is a reduction ofapproximately 12.4 million plasticitems across their hotels.Sandos & Marconfort run hotels

and resorts across Spain, includingLanzarote, Malaga, Torremolinos andBenidorm, with a focus on all-inclusive packages for families, couples and groups of friends.

IF YOU want to visit an area where the commonthemes are awe-inspiring scenery, great food, wine and wildlife, look no further than

Australasia. Comprising Australia and NewZealand, these two countries are well known fortheir natural beauty from the red centre ofAustralia to the fjords of New Zealand there issomething for everyone. Both countries havesomething for adventure lovers, such as bungeejumping and whitewater rafting in New Zealandand diving the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

If you’re looking for a gentler pace, why nottake in the many cosmopolitan cities of Sydney orWellington with their art and foodie scenes.Indigenous culture is important to both countriesso visit Uluru to understand more about the firstAustralians or spend time in Rotorua, NewZealand at Te Puia and the Maori centre.

Unless you have a long time to experienceAustralia, my recommendation would be toconcentrate on either the east or west coast totruly experience the country as the distancesare vast. With New Zealand, you can see thehighlights in a couple of weeks on the North andSouth islands, but if you truly want to immerseyourself in the landscapes, I recommendspending more time on the South Island andthen explore the cities and winelands on theNorth Island.

So what’s the best way to see both thesecountries? I suggest a self-drive holiday whetherin a car, campervan or motorhome. Having spenta month travelling New Zealand in a campervan, the freedom to manage your itinerary isfantastic. Everything is geared towardscampervan travel with numerous campsites, some of which are free. Use apps to help you findyour next base – this makes travelling very easy.A self-drive holiday allows you flexibility, independence to visit places off the tourist trail, and they can be more economical on the wallet.

Having visited both countries and been struckby their sheer vastness and beauty, I cancertainly recommend Australasia. You willexperience people, places and cultures that youwill not find anywhere else.

Turn to page 26 for more great tips and advice onselling holidays to Australasia.

TAUCK HAS announced that it will offerits first-ever cruises on the Douro Riverin Portugal next year, and that its threenew itineraries will sail aboard ariverboat that’s being built specificallyfor the Douro. Rather than cramming passengers in

With a capacity of just84 guests, the MS Andorinha will carryfewer guests than any other vesseloperated by a major line on the Douro.“At Tauck, we measure success by the

quality of the experience we provide ourguests, and one of the best ways toensure a warm, relaxing and engagingatmosphere on board is to avoidcrowding too many guests into a limited

space,” said Tauck CEO Dan Mahar.Riverboats sailing the Douro average260 feet in length, noted Mahar, andaccommodate as many as 130passengers. “That’s 55% more guests inthe same space,” said Mahar, “and youjust can’t deliver the same levelexperience or ambience with thosekinds of numbers.”“The Douro is a very different river,

and so we’ve been consciously deliberatewith the ship’s design. We won’t be thefirst company to operate on the Dourowhen we launch next year, but in termsof infrastructure, we’re excited to havesome surprises in store that will trulydifferentiate us.” The new ship will have a crew of 36,

Bagging a bargain? APH analyses handluggage and priority boarding policies AIRPORT PARKING & Hotels (APH) has researched thehand luggage and priority boarding policies of ten budgetairlines to investigate whether paying for priority boardingor extra luggage allowance is better value for passengers.Available in the Know Before You Go Section of the APH

website at www.aph.com/lowcostairlines, the researchlooks at the hand luggage and priority boarding policies often low-cost airlines, including easyJet, Ryanair and Flybeand compares the size and weight allowances of luggagepermitted for priority and non-priority customers. Theresearch also lists benefits of paying extra for priorityboarding and the costs for checking-in luggage before andafter the initial time of booking.Of the ten airlines researched, two airlines ask that non-

priority passengers board an aircraft with one personal bagonly: Ryanair and Wizz Air. The personal bag must fit underthe seat in front and examples include a handbag, smallbackpack or laptop bag. Travellers can add a cabin bag totheir booking by paying an extra charge of £6 for priorityboarding on Ryanair flights or for an additional fee of £4.50when flying with Wizz Air. Travellers who wish to travel withliquids or large luggage should consider paying for holdluggage at the time of booking, since the price of checkedin luggage increases once a booking is confirmed.

Links Travel guides customers through the Chinese visa processLAST MONTH, the Chinese visa process changed to an online system. Additionally, travellers aged between 14 and 70need to attend one of the UK’s four Chinese visa centres to have their fingerprints taken. This means that agents cannotobtain Chinese visas on behalf of travellers, but Links Travel & Tours has set up a step-by-step guide so that agentsand their clients can easily make their way through the new process. The company’s guide aims to help everyone fill in the online form and they will double-check visa applications to

make sure they are correct before forms are submitted. Agents will receive the step-by-step guide once a China holidaywith Links has been confirmed, letting them know that clients need to apply for visas. As the cost of the visa was originally included in the pricing for their China tours, Links Travel & Tours have adjusted

their website to show that this is no longer included, and reduced the price accordingly. All clients who have alreadybooked their China tour at the original price, which included the cost of the visa, will receive a refund of £151 along withthe step-by-step guide, so that they can apply and pay for the visa directly.
