LITURGY OF DISCIPLESHIP pp. 37-42 Pastor Lane

(Standing)

What shall we render to the Lord for all his bounty to us? We will offer to the Lord the sacrifices of thanksgiving and call upon the name of the Lord.

Praise the Lord!

Gracious God, for revealing yourself to us as one who created all things, who gave us dominion over all the earth, who called us into a covenant relationship with you, who has given us the privilege of being your ambassadors in our world, who loves us as your children through Jesus Christ our Lord, We give you our heartfelt thanks

T. EMMANUEL (14 Bb)

Our heavenly Father, source of love, to you our hearts we raise.

Your all-sustaining power we prove, and gladly sing your praise.

(Sitting)

Jesus Christ our Savior, because you were willing to come to earth in the likeness of humanity, to take the form of a servant; Because you became obedient unto death, even death on a cross; Because God has highly exalted you and bestowed on you the name which is above every name, that at your name every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that you are Lord, to the glory of God the Father; We humbly bow before you in praise and adoration.

T. MANOAH

Lord Jesus, yours we wish to be; our sacrifice receive.

By you preserved, from sin set free, to you ourselves we give.

Holy Spirit, for dwelling within us and calling us to God by the gospel, For preserving us in the true faith, For leading the church on earth in its mission, For pointing the way of discipleship to each of us, We acknowledge your presence and power among us.

T. LAND OF REST

Come, Holy Ghost, the Savior's love shed in our hearts abroad;

so shall we ever live and move and be with Christ in God.

Jesus said: Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; whoever serves me, the Father will honor. If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.

We hear your call to discipleship. Master, teach us the way we should go.

Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your minds, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

(Liturgy continues on p. 6)

Jesus said: This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear much fruit, and that your fruit should abide.

Now the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

(Kneeling or sitting)

We confess, Lord, that as your disciples we have often dishonored the holy name we bear. We ask your forgiveness for the times when we have failed to labor for your kingdom; when we have not followed your admonition to seek first the kingdom of God; when we have hidden our light from the world; when we, as the salt of the earth, have lost our strength. Have mercy on us, and restore unto us the joy of faithful discipleship. Amen.

The Lord, your Redeemer, has said: With everlasting love, I will have compassion on you. Therefore serve the Lord with gladness; witness to his goodness and mercy; and preach Jesus Christ as Lord, with yourselves as servants for Jesus' sake.

(Standing) T. GRACEHAM (581 K)

Jesus, Master, whom I serve, though so feebly and so ill,

strengthen hand and heart and nerve, all your bidding to fulfill; open now my eyes to see

all the work you have for me.

Jesus, Master, will you use one who owes you more than all?

As you will, I would not choose; only let me hear your call.

Jesus, let me always be in your service glad and free. Amen.

✝ PRAYER OF MEDITATION ✝

Third Sunday after the Epiphany

Holy God, you gather the whole universe into your radiant presence and continually reveal your Son as our Savior.

Bring healing to all wounds, make whole all that is broken, speak truth to all illusion, and shed light in every darkness, that all creation will see your glory and know your Christ.

Amen.

Today is the Third Sunday after the Epiphany. During this Epiphany season, we have the opportunity to ponder the significance of the Savior’s birth and to reflect upon the salvation that he brings us. This Epiphany time continues until Ash Wednesday which will occur on February 17.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The sympathy of the congregation is expressed to the family and friends of Sister Judy Middleton who entered the more immediate presence of the Savior on January 17. Sister Middleton was the husband of Brother John Middleton, the sister of Sister Dottie Nixa (husband Steve), and the aunt of Sister Stephanie Nixa.

We thank the Calvary members, including the Calvary Band Trio, with Brian Lott, Director, Carl McKnight, and Seth McKnight; the Choral Ensemble from our choir; our organist, Mary Louise Kapp Peeples; and the staff, who are leading worship this morning via the live stream broadcast.

In 2020, Calvary’s donations to Sunnyside Ministry totaled nearly 1.5 tons. Due to COVID-19 the method of collecting had to change. We now collect every other month on the 3rd  Tuesday from 4-5  and on the 4th  Sunday 1-2. Drive by donations are made behind the church during these times. This is a great time to stay socially distanced while getting to visit with some church members!! Our first donation of 2021 is Tuesday, January 26 from 4-5 and then Sunday, January 31 from 1-2. If these times don’t work for you contact Donna Cheek to set up another time at 336-399-0857.

Limited in-person worship is available today. If you need a copy of “Procedures for Attending In-Person Worship,” as developed by the COVID-19 Task Force and approved by the Joint Board of Calvary, please let one of the ushers know.

Weekly Bible Study continues this Wednesday, January 27, at 6:30 p.m. via ZOOM. The ZOOM address is:

The Moravian Church Third Sunday after the Epiphany January 24, 2021

Right Now

The teaching of Jesus is clear. The clock is ticking, the sands of time are running out, and soon! God’s kingdom is coming and we’d better be ready. The kingdom will bring healing to our pain and suffering, and reconciliation to our broken relationships. But there is no room in the kingdom for the things we love the most: pride and our idols. What Jesus taught in the Beatitudes about the poor and meek—that’s going to come true! Scary! We may not know exactly what it means to repent, but we do know it means we can’t keep setting our hearts on relationships, career, financial security, or family as the path to fulfillment. Only Jesus can give that! We may be very comfortable with the idea of God as we imagine, and be willing to grant the beauty and goodness of Jesus and the Bible. We may be less than happy to give up our efforts to make God our debtor, to earn our own place in heaven. Jesus gives us the remedy for our condition: “Repent, and believe.” That’s about as welcome as a round of chemotherapy—and just as necessary. Jesus warns us to judge ourselves by God’s standards and to turn to him for a change in our thought, our words, and our affections. And Jesus warns us to refuse to obey the stupid lie that we can make ourselves good enough for God. Instead, respond to the Savior’s invitation and find new life today! Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled . . . repent, and believe.” Right now!
