Dear Parishioners,
Saint Alexis of Rome is listed in the traditional Roman Calendar for July 17. He was born in Rome in the late 300s as the only son of wealthy senator and his wife. Alexis was raised in a Catholic home, since the Catholic faith had been legalized in the year 313, and his parents were known for their care of the poor. They made an agreement with another wealthy family for Alexis to marry their daughter, but Alexis wanted to remain single to serve Christ. To honor the wishes of his parents, he married, but on his wedding night he explained to his bride that Christ was calling him to live a life of poverty and chastity. She gave him permission to follow this calling and he fled to Edessa in far-away Syria so that no one would recognize him. There he lived as a beggar on the streets, sharing his food with other beggars, spending many hours praying in the church each day, and teaching prayers and catechism lessons to children. His parents sent servants to look all over the Roman Empire for their son, but they did not recognize him as a beggar. One day in church, a miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary spoke aloud and recognized him as the “Man of God” who had fled from Rome. Alexis could no longer remain in Syria and returned to Rome. His appearance was so changed that when Alexis returned to his home, his parents did not recognize him, but were accustomed to care for beggars and gave him food and shelter. For seventeen years, Alexis lived as a beggar in a small space under the stairs of his family home, continuing to spend hours in church each day and teaching prayers and catechism lessons to children. When Alexis died, his mother found a note hidden in his clothing, revealing his identity as their long-lost son and how his love for Christ led him to live this life of penance from the day of his wedding. His mother cried out, “O my son! Too late have I known you!”
The Letter to the Hebrews (13:2) reminds us, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” The Scriptures this Sunday remind us of the importance of hospitality and the ways in which God blesses those who open their hearts and their homes as an expression of love, welcoming others as Christ in their midst.
Jesus is with us, humble and poor, disguised under the appearance of bread in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. How many times have we forgotten or perhaps ignored the consolation, the beauty, and the spiritual riches that Jesus offers us in his Eucharistic presence? Like the mother of Saint Alexis, we cry out, “O my Jesus, my life, my love! Too late have I known you!” But we still have time now to spend with Jesus, to recognize him hidden but truly here with us. The US Bishops have announced a three-year revival of devotion to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Archbishop Gomez is organizing a Eucharistic Congress on August 13 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, a day of prayer and presentations along with Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Admission is free. Visit: lacatholics.org/eucharist for more information and to register.
Thank you all for your patience with our temporary parking situation. The current part of the lot that is blocked off should be back to normal by the end of this month.
With gratitude,
Fr. Anthony Garcias, Administrator 818-247-2222 x225 [email protected]

Queridos feligreses,
¡Demasiado tarde te he conocido!”
¡Demasiado tarde te he conocido!”
