A Time To Rest There is a saying about New Englanders being hardy folks and it is certainly true. We are geared for contending with radical weather changes. Although we don’t have massive fires, earthquakes or tsunamis, we have our share of foul weather and the potential for a hurricane every now and then. If you are a true New Englander you have to be someone who gravitates toward change and likes living in a four-season climate. Although you don’t hear too many people saying “I hate the idea of summer”, more will tell you that they “hate the idea of winter.” Some even choose to hit the high road and head off to warmer parts of the country to avoid it all together. Those of us who stay pay a little bit more atten- tion to what Mother Nature offers us in this final season of the year. If you are fortunate enough to visit the coastline frequently, you can see some amazing sights and take in incredible views. Have you ever seen the rays of the sun bouncing off the ocean with a beach blanketed by pure white snow? It really is quite beautiful. Before the snow arrives, the coastline gives us the appearance of sleep, or pure rest. The trees lose their leaves and the sea grass and other vegetation turn vari- ous hues of brown, giving us a sign that everything has turned in for the year. One of the most beautiful sights you will see is a little waterfowl known as the Buf- flehead. This tiny duck with its con- trasting colors of stark white and black inevitably arrives at the shore sometime in late November early December. They are known to be one of the more popular birds amongst bird watchers. Buffleheads are only 13-16 inches in length and weigh up to 9.5 pounds. They have evolved their small size to fit the nesting cavity of their host, the woodpecker. They forage under- water and feed predominantly on crusta- ceans and mollusks in saltwater. Adult males are not only striking in black and white color, they also have an iridescent green and purple head with a white patch behind the eye. The next time you plan to take a winter stroll near the ocean’s edge be sure to bring along a pair of binoculars and keep an eye out for these pretty little ducks. With the start of a New Year, we may think it’s time to re-energize, make resolutions and start the busy cycle all over again. We should instead follow Mother Nature’s lead and take a long, much deserved rest. ************************************* VETERANS GROUP ************************************ Year in Review As 2016 comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to update all of you on another successful year. Here are some highlights: We collected over 4,000 lbs. of cloth-ing and 12 bikes for our annual drive to support the Nathan Hale Founda-tion. The summer golf outing and raffle raised approximately $2,000. Thanks to Mizuno America for donating the Irons and to Indian Pond for donating the putter and golf balls. A lot of manual labor was provided by Veterans and Residents of PH to help with the building and planting at Na-than Hale's Three Harts Farm on Beaver Dam Road. Many thanks to all who helped. There will be more opportunities to participate and re-ceive many garden goodies. A special thanks goes out to the Great Island Garden Club for their donation and work at the Farm as well. The Veterans at Laurelwood are now part of the Pinehills Veterans Group. We had 2 get together meetings and hope to have more. We added the names of those who gave permission to the Wall of Honor. Again, welcome Laurelwood Vets! Our 10TH Annual "Veterans Only" Social was a great success, with over 100 attendees. Special thanks to Longridge Wine and Spirits and The Market for their donations and sup-port. The raffle and 50/50 grossed over $1,200. Please continue to sup-port these businesses. Veterans Day at the Market was a success once again, with over 125 "Veterans Theme" Bags given away and $600+ raised in donations. The results of all fund raising and donations allowed us to donate over $4,500 to support local Veterans Or-ganizations who support local Vets in need. Thanks to all of you who sup-port the various fund raising efforts. We appreciate your continued gener-osity. The recipients are: the Plym-outh Veterans Agent's Emergency

Fund, The Nathan Hale Foundation, Homes For Troops, Heidrea For Troops and the Plym-outh Vietnam Welcome Home cele-bration. A special thanks goes out to the fol-lowing governing individuals who an-swered our call to help welcome home the "Boots on the Ground" Vi-etnam Veterans. All were contacted and the following donated: Senator Vinny DeMacedo, Representatives Matt Muratore and Tom Calter, Se-lectman, John Mahoney, Shelagh Joyce and Ken Tavares. We are most appreciative! The 10th Annual Flag raising was attended by over 200 PH residents, family and friends. This annual event gives thanks to all Veterans every-where. Thanks to Olga Gianelis for leading us in song. Thanks to the many local vendors who donated coffee, donuts, cookies and snacks. We hope you all had the opportunity to participate in and/or read about the special Plymouth Vietnam Wel-come Home Commemoration held in the Memorial Hall on 11.11.16. It was long overdue! In the Plymouth area alone, over 200 were identified as serving "in country," including sever-al of us from Pinehills. Finally, several PH Veterans (and a few family members), along with many Plymouth Veterans and fami-lies, joined the Nathan Hale founda-tion in packing and delivering Thanksgiving baskets to our less for-tunate Veterans. On behalf of your Pinehills Veterans Planning Committee, I thank you for your support and look forward to your continued help which will ena-ble us to increase our contributions to those Veterans in need. A Very Happy, Healthy New Year! Ken Goldner, President The Veterans Group at the Pinehills

All Around The House Tips for Great Island Homeowners January 2017 Have you recently discovered small four-legged unwanted guests living in your basement? Yes, we are talking about small field mice that tradition-ally live outside in the grassy areas of the great outdoors. But now that the weather has turned cold, these little creatures instinctively seek shelter in buildings away from the cold temper-atures, snow, and ice. So generally, that means they like to visit your basement where it is a comfortable, dry, and warm environment that is usually free of any disturbances. Keeping mice from entering your home is vital to your family's good health. The best way to get rid of mice is by stopping them from getting into your house in the first place. The key to solving this problem is generally quite straight forward and simple. Remember, mice can climb vertical surfaces, so look both high and low for possible points of entry. During the bright daylight hours, carefully inspect your basement walls, under and around the basement door lead-ing to the backyard bulkhead hatch-way, around window frames, vents, and utility line access points for day-light shining through those areas. Because of their small size and soft skeletal frame, mice can easily squeeze through an opening as small as 3/8” of an inch (just a little bigger than the diameter of a pencil) to en-ter your home. The key to good mouse proofing is to permanently seal any openings with non-rusting copper mesh or aluminum screening and then cover it with weather re-sistant caulk or mortar cement. Do not use “steel wool” as the steel will eventually rust and disintegrate thereby staining the surrounding ar-eas with stain streaks as well as al-lowing mice to re-enter your home at some point in the future. If you have a metal bulkhead door-way, it is important to have a tight-fitting basement door sweep on the bottom of your outside basement door as well as good weather strip-ping around your door frame to keep those little annoying creatures from

entering your basement. By its basic construction, the metal bulkhead hatchway is primarily designed to shed rainwater and snow from com-ing into the basement so therefore, its loose-fitting doors are not de-signed to keep mice out of the out-side basement stairway area. Another entry point is the air condi-tioner pipes leading from your out-door air compressor unit going into the house. Generally, the builder made larger holes to accommodate the installation of the unit’s pipes and the original weather sealant may have dried up and fallen out there by leaving an unobstructed highway for mice to travel in and out of your basement. The simple fix here is to purchase a very inexpensive flexible weather-proof sealant that is generically called “duct seal” which is used by electricians to seal holes where wires and pipes enter the house. Stuff and mold this clay-like sealant around all exterior pipes entering your home to seal against air leaks and mice entry. This “duct seal” product is available at all hardware stores and home cen-ters in the electrical department. Also, pest control experts suggest removing any outside source of food or standing water on your property. Outdoor bird feeders are one of the most appealing sources to attract mice to your property and eventually into your home. Also, unattended any pet food and water bowls should not be kept outside for the same reason. And if you already have a “mouse in your house”, contact a local extermi-nator for the best solutions to your mouse situation.

Susan Cattaneo is one of Boston’s most respected songwriters. A powerful singer and sophisticated writer, Susan combines vivid story telling with a modern songwriter’s spin. You’ll hear a blend of

country, rock and soul with sparkles of blues and folk—music that would slide into the comfort zone for fans of Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter or Sheryl Crow. Cattaneo’s life is a mixture of teaching at the Berklee College of Music, writing and recording in Nashville, performing around Boston, touring along the East Coast, and raising a family in Medford. Susan has garnered a number of awards in national songwriting competitions and her albums have received national acclaim.

“Susan rocks with the best of them and also sings ballads so sweetly and lovingly that it brings tears to the eyes of those listening.”
