SEEING THE WORLD

THROUGH KIND EYES

How do we look at the people

around us- those we love, the

grocery clerk, the neighborhood

kids? It makes all the difference in

the world how we look at people,

both for ourselves and for them. Look

at a clerk with impatience or anger,

and you have laid a burden on their

backs; you’re likely to get

impatience or anger back. Look at

them with kind eyes, with

compassionate eyes, and their

burden is lifted, and kindness will be

multiplied to the person behind you.

How did Jesus look at those around

Him? Sometimes with flashing anger-

the Bible says that. But most often we

get the sense that He looked at

those around Him with compassion,

with kindness, with humor.

Our calling as the Church of Jesus

Christ is to see the world with the

eyes of God. When any of us is

awake to the presence of God in our

lives, we begin to see with God’s

sight. And as that becomes our way

of seeing, then we are increasingly

open to the imperatives of love. And

that love guides our choices,

permeates our attitudes, and clarifies

our sight.

To see, live and act in God’s love is to

know God’s will for our lives. This is our

calling as a Christian congregation, just

as it is our calling as individual Christians.

As we learn to live out that calling, we

will find ourselves imitating people like

St. Francis and Mother Teresa, who saw

Jesus in the outcast and dying persons

around them.

In Jesus’ famous parable about a Good

Samaritan, the lawyer said that the way

to eternal life was to love God and

neighbor- a self-giving love that seeks

their good. A love that sees with kind

eyes. Such love is always a matter of

choice, a matter of will. It is to desire

and work for the health of the other. It is

to respect our differences and listen to

those with whom we disagree. It is to

treat others as important to you- to get

off our smartphones and look at the

other person as worthy of our attention.

To love another is to look for the good in

them and affirm their strengths. This is

true for individuals; it is also true for

churches, societies and nations.

To see Jesus is to see the injustice in front

of us and to address it. To follow Jesus is

to see those around us who tend to be

invisible, and to respect them. To be

Jesus is to recognize when we tend to

run away from the need around us, and

to resist that tendency. To be God’s

presence is to see the world with God’s

eyes, and to love it. This is our calling at

Emmanuel. In 2016, let us embrace it.

Happy New Year, dear friends-

Blessings, Pastor Hawkins

The Festival of Epiphany January 6 marks the

Christian season of

Epiphany- the Festival of

Lights. Many other cultures

have festivals of light as

darkness shrouds the earth; and the intentions of our

festivals are remarkably similar. The Hindu festival of

Diwali, their festival of lights, symbolizes the victory of light

over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over

evil, and hope over despair. Does that sound familiar?

For Christians, the light in the darkness is Jesus- the one

who by word and example teaches us that our lives are

to be lights shining brightly to bring light…knowledge…

good… hope into a world that cries out for light. The tale

our Jewish sisters and brothers tell sounds like gospel to

me: When you look into the face of a human being, and

have enough light to recognize them, as your sister or

brother, then the Dawn has come.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

We talked about Advent this past lesson series and heard

the Polar Express story. We also practiced songs to sing in

church. The kids sounded wonderful!!

We are having "Wake Up With God" on January 10. Look

for a signup sheet to help with the breakfast items! Kids

should come to church on the 10th in their jammies or

comfortable clothing.

We are starting our next lesson and this time we will be

talking about Parables and Miracles.

REMEMBER: Please bring in your child's registration form

for Sunday School if you haven't done so already. Also,

please fill out the permission form so that we can use your

child's picture or video with them in it in the newsletter, on

our Facebook page, or other public place. You can

drop off these forms with a teacher or place in the

Christian Ed mailbox. There are extra forms in the blue

room and in the file folder in the Christian Ed mailbox.

And don't forget to bring in some extra money if you can

for our offering.

Thank you!

ADULTS

ADULT MORNING STUDY: TUESDAYS from 9:30-1045am

Jan 5, we resume our explorations of Bible & Theology,

Faith & Life as we review John Dominic Crossan’s

WONDERFUL series “The Challenge of Jesus.” Come and

be a part of the lively conversations! No previous

knowledge of the Bible is needed- just a lively and curious

mind. For more info, contact Pastor Hawkins. 965-2429 /

[email protected]

NEW!!! STARTING JAN. 6!

ADULT EVENING STUDY: WEDNESDAYS

from 7:00-8:00pm January 6, we’re starting a 16-week evening study on

how Christianity developed. Before Jesus ever started His

ministry, the Roman Emperors were called “The Savior of

the World,” “The Son of God,” and “The Prince of Peace,”

but their idea of how peace would be achieved was by

conquering the world. When Jesus comes on the scene,

these imperial titles are taken over by Him. Why? What

does it mean when the titles of the Roman Imperial

Theology are taken from Caesar and given to Jesus?

Come to this fascinating study! No Bible background

necessary.

CONFIRMATION "O God, my God, known to me in Jesus Christ, I give

myself to You as Your own,

to love and serve You faithfully all the days of my life.

Amen”

Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 16 & 17, youths from our

Southeast Wisconsin UCC churches will be gathering in

Milwaukee to catch a glimpse of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther

King’s dream of a just society by learning about some of

the injustices of our day and engaging in learning and

service opportunities in our local community. It’s going to

be a great weekend, with us sleeping over Sat, Jan. 17 at

Plymouth UCC in Milwaukee. ($40 per youth). For more

information, contact Pastor Hawkins by Jan. 6: 965-2429

CONFIRMANDS! HAVE YOU STARTED YOUR

FEBRUARY MEMORIZATION YET? (It’s due Feb. 14!)

PSALM 23: King James Version

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth

me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in paths of

righteousness for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of

death, I will fear no evil-

for Thou art with me. Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort

me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of

mine enemies:

Thou anointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of

my life,

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Singing Bowl...CHURCH CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS!

January and February's Singing Bowl will be

dedicated to Camp Scholarships for our

Emmanuel kids. This past summer, several of

our Emmanuel kids got to go to Pilgrim

Center, our UCC summer camp… and did they have a

blast! During January and February, the loose change

offering in the Singing Bowl will go to camp scholarships

so more of our kids can go this year! (and mark your

calendars for CAMP SUNDAY, February 14th when we will

welcome the Director of Pilgrim Center, Mike Klemp North

who will share a mission moment during worship and lead

an Informational Forum following worship.

Kathy Zebrowski reported that she and Sandie Horne

delivered 25 shopping bags filled with socks, scarves,

toiletries, candy and other surprises to the Veterans

Administration in Milwaukee. The retired priest who

greeted them was very emotional when he said, "You

don't know what you're doing for these people!" He told

them that they really live on the streets and they come to

the east side of the big complex for food and worship in

the chapel.

Another theme for later in 2016 will be Immigration and

Refugee issues. As that time grows closer, we will

welcome Joel Lashley’s nephew who will speak to us on

the subject. His nephew, Ben Shyrock, is an immigration

lawyer.

Thank you Chris Lang for being the guiding light of Social

Concerns. Your organizational skills, attention to detail

and not to be dismissed-your strong stage voice from the

back of church, explaining our latest project have all

been wonderful assets for the Social Concerns board. Our

hearts are with you as you focus on your husband’s

treatments and return to health.

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL

Family Promise

Dear Volunteers,

Please check your calendars for our next Family Promise

hosting week. Our guests will arrive on Sunday, January

17th and be with us through January 23rd. Thank you for

always supporting our program!

Sue Stelling and Charlotte Voigt

Christian Stewardship refers to

the responsibility that Christians

have in maintaining and using

wisely the gifts that God has

bestowed.

These gifts include a person’s talents, time and wealth.

References to the “tithe”, or giving of a “tenth” (the

meaning of “tithe”) are found throughout the Bible. The

tithe represents the returning to God a significant,

specific, and intentional portion of material gain.

However, giving is not limited to the tithe or a specific

amount, illustrated by Jesus’ comment that a woman

who gave a very small amount had given more than

those had given large amounts because “while they

gave out of their abundance, she gave all she had to live

on.”

Psalm 24:1: "The Earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the

world, and those who live in it". Give to the Lord.

Adult Fellowship News....

Adult Fellowship will have its January meeting on

Tuesday, the 12th from 1-3 PM in fellowship hall. Mary Fran

Roberts and Jan McGraw will be the hostesses.

Ladies...Jan and Mary Fran will be serving lunch & dessert,

so do not have lunch before you come!

Please consider placing your old cell

phones in the collection kiosk (the drawer

labeled for phones) in the entry way.

They will be reset to factory settings,

which will erase “all” personal data on

the phones. They will then either be given to the

Women’s Center in Waukesha to be used as “911”

security phones for clients, or possibly be listed on eBay

with the proceeds added to the church's general fund.

PRECIOUS METALS RECYCLING Keep those bags of cans coming! Place your

aluminum cans and other precious metals

to everyone who purchased on

December 6th! PARTICIPATION IN THE SCRIP PROGRAM IS

THE EASIEST WAY TO RAISE EXTRA $$ FOR THE CHURCH!

Hundreds of retailers are a part of the Great Lakes SCRIP

program. Listings are available at church. You purchase

gift cards each month for such mundane things as

gasoline and groceries or fun things like department

stores and restaurants to name but a few. You pay FACE

VALUE for the cards you purchase and Emmanuel retains

a percentage of the cost.

Orders are normally taken the first Sunday of the month

and are always delivered the following Sunday.

Yes, the gift-giving season is over, but you still need

groceries and gas for your vehicles....so PLEASE take

advantage of this FREE MONEY for the church by

purchasing SCRIP.

The best way to grow our church is to

invite neighbors and friends to come to

church with you! Afraid of bringing up the

“C” word in conversation? Here are a

couple of talking points for January’s

church life that may be of help...

We have a new evening Bible Study starting on

January 6th from 7-8 PM using the excellent video

resource by John Dominic Crossan, “The

Challenge of Jesus.” (Historically inviting a friend

to a study setting has been a successful way to

get people interested in Emmanuel...give it a try!).

For friends with children....January 10th is our

annual Wake Up With God which our kids LOVE!

They get to come to church in their pajamas or

other comfortable clothing, eat breakfast and do

a bunch of FUN activities. Have your kids invite

their friends to attend!

You’ve just received a

random act

of kindness go ahead and

PAY IT FORWARD! www.seeyouonsunday.org
