Hello McLean,
Happy New Year!! Hard to believe winter is almost half over, soon
gone are the days of going to work in the dark and coming home in the
dark. I apologize for the late issue of this messenger, I’ve been busier
than normal. I still encourage anyone who would like to take over our
quarterly newspaper to contact me; really, it is easy to do!!

Since the last issue of the messenger, we have had the kids Halloween
party, with 38 children in attendance.
We also had the Santa Claus parade and winter carnival/craft sale.
Although the attendance was down from previous years, we did have
more tables this year at the craft sale expanding it into the school foyer
(thanks to the generousity of the school). A colouring contest was held
for the children, winners were Aurelia Whyte (4 and under);
Brianne Potter (ages 5-7); Morgan Antoine (ages 8-10). Their pictures
are in this issue of the messenger.
Upcoming is our annual general meeting the first Tuesday in February
and a movie night on Saturday, February 21, 2015. Watch for posters.
Playschool is back in full swing after the Christmas break and it seems the class is
growing! We now have 22 children ages 3 and 4 registered for playschool! It’s
great to see just how much this community continues to grow.
We will be selling chocolates for our yearly fundraiser again which should be here
just in time for the Easter break. Please contact any playschool family at that time
to get yours before they’re gone!
If anyone has questions regarding playschool, please contact Anngie Spencer
(306-699-2442) or Arleen Sanson (306-699-2501).

From The Inside Out
“Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now
and make a brand new ending.” - Carl Bard
Well another year in the books. Bring on 2015!
So many people look to the new year as a chance to start over, fresh, all about new
beginnings. It is fitting that we kicked it off the new year with a public meeting to
listen to concerns about the proposed Zoning Bylaw. Thanks to those few who came
out. We will then kick off our first regular Council meeting with the passing of the
new Zoning Bylaw and Official Community Plan.
We will continue this path of updating our bylaws to reflect current conditions and
times throughout this year. I would think that we will look to write a new “Building
Bylaw” which will cover the basic requirements of new buildings within the vil-
lage. We will probably set up a new type of bylaw with reference to fees and
fines. This bylaw will allow us to amend fees and fines associated with all of our
various bylaws without actually re-writing a whole bunch of new bylaws. From there
we will have to look at the rest of the Village’s existing bylaws and determine which
of them are in the most need of updating.
We will soon be looking to our budget for this year as well. It is always a challenge to
try to complete all of the various projects, infrastructure updates, etc. on such a
modest budget. It is always our goal to supply a great standard of living in the village
while still trying to keep our taxes from increasing too much.
Here is to another great year!
Cheers!!

McLean School
With permission from Ms. Michelle Nye, we present the story she wrote and
told at the McLean School 2014 Christmas play. Enjoy!
Please put up with me for a little while. I’d like to share with you a
little story, of how I learned the meaning of Christmas from my dad.
He was born in 1930, the beginning of the depression and started grade
in 1936, the midst of the depression. There were eventually seven
children in the family and his father farmed a 1/4 section of marginal
land. He used to say they grew the best stones and gophers in the whole
province. Needless to say, day to day life was a struggle.
My dad attended a one room school named Petersburg about 3 1/2 miles
north of Balgonie and 1/2 mile west of where his home was. It housed
grade 1 to grade 8 students and was slightly larger than one of our
classrooms.
One Christmas I asked him what were some of the gifts they received
when they were children. He said they would usually get a pencil or an
orange each. On a good year they might get both—you didn’t dare lose
that pencil because that’s all you had for the entire school year. His
mother, my granny, would also pop popcorn as a special treat for Xmas
Day. As a little girl I was stunned at this revelation—I asked him what
did they do for fun at Christmas.
Well, he said the highlight of Christmas, for everyone, for miles around,
was the Xmas Concert. Regardless of the weather, everyone came in
their horse drawn sleighs and cutters. The students had practised and
7
rehearsed for weeks, depending on the number of students that year
many of them played several different parts. The school could not
possibly hold all the students and their family who came to watch the
concert, so those students who were not performing at the time, waited
for their turns out in the cold at a side door. They also changed their
costumes out there in the dark.
If there was a full house in attendance, the parents (usually the men)
would also have to take turns, alternately watching the play, or going
outside to let others in to watch. My dad said many of the men would
fight off the cold by passing around Christmas brews of dandelion,
wheat and potato wine—sometimes some of the men would be so
warm, they had to lay down in the cold snow to cool off.
After the concert, everyone would visit, and catch up on all the local
news. People didn’t travel much in the winter, so they wouldn’t see
anyone but their own families for months.
Someone would always bring a fiddle or an accordion and the concert
would become a dance/party until the wee hours of the morning—
usually about 8:00am. Everyone would go home to do the morning
chores, some of them had 5 or 6 miles open sleigh ride into the freezing
cold and life went back to normal.
The gifts they received or did not receive didn’t matter. The
opportunity to be together with family, friends and neighbours was what
was important. Their Xmas concerts were the highlight of the entire
year and the topic of many conversations for months after the concert.
Their simple Christmas’s may seem lacking and uneventful to some of
us, but when my dad told these stories, I used to wish so badly that I
could have experienced the utter joy these people must have felt, just by
being together.

Thank you to all who bought tickets to the New Years Cabaret that we
hosted. Although the crowd was smaller than we hoped, we believe
everyone in attendance had a good time. We even had a few people take
advantage of our designated drivers service to get them home safely after
the cabaret. We think we met our goal which was to give the residents of
McLean and surrounding area a party to get together with friends and
family to ring in 2015.
We are planning to have our 3rd annual steak night fundraiser in May
this year. Please watch for posters in the near future.
