Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Family and Friends of He’eia Elementary School;

Welcome back to school and the year 2015. We hope that y0ur break was filled with celebration and quality time for family and yes, rest. January is going to be a busy month, so please take extra care to check on upcoming dates included in this newsletter. You can

also check the school’s marquee, which is located at the front of the school and for communication of a much more urgent matter we will also use mass messaging if

necessary.

We are just back from Winter Break and it is already the middle of January. Report cards should be coming out reflecting your child’s progress for the First Semester. Our mid-year school-wide testing showed good growth rates for all students in Reading and Math. We

will continue to track the progress of our interventions to keep students on the road to success as we try to close the achievement gap.

The new year will bring more student and parent activities such as our PTO sponsored Mother and Son Dance and students in the 6th grade will be participating in the Windward

District’s Science Fair to be held in February. More news regarding that will follow. This message is short but once again we want to take this opportunity to thank you so

much for your continuous faith and support to us, the faculty and staff at He’eia Elementary.

Mr. Scoville and I wish everyone a very Happy New Year and hope for a rewarding enriching educational experience for our students.

Mahalo Kumu Souki, Principal R. Scoville, Vice Principal

Academic requirements: The children will present their poems this month beginning on December 15th. Please make sure that your child is practicing daily and is using expression and 8-10 hand gestures to make their

poem(s) entertaining. Poems must be memorized and lough enough for everyone in class to hear. As part of the homework, your child is required to read for 20-30 minutes OR complete1 KidBiz article and questions. This must be done at least 4 times a week (at least 16 entries a month). During the winter break, please have your

child continue their Reading Log, KidBiz, IXL and flashcards. Daily reminders – Thank you for your continued support in checking your child’s planner and signing daily. Your

continued support does make a difference in your child’s success in 3rd grade! Please check with your child about school supplies. Some are in need of more pencils and erasers. Many have been borrowing from others

and depleting their supplies. Announcements – Our Reading STAR test is coming up on December 10th and Math STAR test is on December 16th and 17th. Please make sure your child is in school on those days. This is an important midyear test and the

students always do best taking the test with their class, rather than in a make-up situation.

Grade 5 K. Davis, V. Goo, K. Wilson

Kindergarten L. Lee, P. Chung

Happy New Year! The school year is just whizzing by and we're very thankful for such thoughtful and conscientious parents.

Mahalo to all of the parents who participated in our Gingerbread Making Day. Wasn't it 'ono? That prized recipe has been used for over 20 years at He'eia so please put it in a safe place, k? Lol.... This new year requires more focus and diligence in our K classrooms where we continue to establish a solid foundation of reading/writing/ and math skills. Your kindergartner will be expected to apply those decoding, independent spelling and number sense skills into various activities reflecting our current Common Core Standards. Please continue to support your child's quest for independent thinking and critical thinking skills by engaging him /her during homework time, reading time, and everyday conversations and activities. Please remember to fill out your child's Reading Log noting the 5 informative text requirement as well as the writing assignment. Mahalo for your continued support and aloha. Wishing you a happy and healthy new year.... Mrs. Chung and Miss Lee

Grade 4 S. Taba, L. Galindo, K. Tanaka

Happy New Year! We hope that you have had an enjoyable holiday season! Supplies – Many students have run out of pencils and erasers. Please help us by replenishing basic school supplies.

Field trips – We will be seeing a musical performance bythe Castle Performing Arts group on February 4, 2015. Wehave also tentatively scheduled a field trip to the Honolulu Art Museum in March. Field trip forms will be forthcoming.

Language Arts – Our third quarter reports have been assigned. Please turn in approval slips this week. The Sandwich Book Reports will be due February 13th.

Social Studies/Science – This quarter we will hopefully be creating our IMovie for our “I am From Poems”. We will upload some pictures to go with the poems for the backgrounds. In Social Studies we will be starting our unit on the Monarchy. The students are excited to learn about Kamehameha the Great and all his accomplishments.

Mathematics – in January, we will work on long division and introduce two-digit by two-digit multiplication. Many students have not been working on the IXL computer program. During the third and fourth quarter, completing 20 minutes of IXL per week will become a requirement. Students who do not have access to a computer or smart phone can work on ICL during morning homeroom time or during study hall on Fridays.

Grade 1 D. Murakami, S. Upton, S. Kaio

Happy New Year! We hope you had a restful and joyful holiday season. The 3rd quarter has begun and we will continue to work on our reading fluency skills. Please continue to practice your Fry Words regularly. We are now learning to read and spell words from list 3. In Math, we will work on addition up to 20 and continue to work on Fact Families. We will be counting up to 120 by ones, fives and tens. Please practice counting on by fives and twos starting at any number. see what creative second graders have been up to.
