“We’re in the business of Learning!”“We’re in the business of Learning!”
Where has the summer gone? It seems like just yesterday that the final school bell rang and students eagerly raced for the door to begin their much awaited break. Fast forward a couple of weeks and it's time to begin another school year.
If you want to set the stage for a good semester you need to start off on the right foot: hit the ground running on day one (or even before). Get good rest, eat right, but most important-ly, get to your classes early and plan your week before the year kicks off. The more organised you are on day one, the better off you’ll be the rest of the semester.

So Christmas has come and gone, yet you still have almost two weeks left be-fore the children go back to school – if you haven’t already this may be the time to explore the Friendly Route. The Friendly Route stretch-es along the N6 from Glen Avon Farm, 4.5km from Merrifield School and the turning circle in Beacon Bay to Mpongo Park, 35km outside East London.Along the route there are a number of fun-filled attrac-tions geared up for those families looking for a dif-ferent way of spending the day together. From discovering that per-fect piece of antique furni-ture and other bric-a-brac to visiting touch farms and bird, game and reptile viewing as well as hiking and biking trails – visitors are spoilt for choice. Most families with young-sters know the joy of a touch farm and there are
three on this route - Burn-side, Mel’s and The Farm-yard. At Lindale Farm a variety of birds and farm animals will keep the kids (and adults) interested as well as entertained. The Lion Park and Apex Predators @ the Python Park offer close encoun-ters with both indigenous and exotic animal species, while Mpongo Park allows self-drive tours through its 3500ha game reserve.Mountain bikers and trail runners will love the coun-tryside at 3 Silos. There are 5, 10, 15 and 20km loops to cater for all levels of fit-ness. While almost all venues of-fer something in the way of refreshments, the Python Park restaurant is open un-til 10pm six days a week and Mpongo Park’s restau-rant offers a fine view of its hippo pool.
So get in your car and head out that way – you won’t be disappointed!

GARDENING TIPSHome remedy for slugs and snails: Use leftover orange halves after removing pulp. Cut doorway in side and put in flower bed. Snails and slugs love citrus smell and will go into the orange igloo but will be unable to get out. In the morning simply lift the or-ange skin and remove snails and slugs.
It’s time to get the garden back into shape after the holi-days. Remove annu-als that are past their best. Plant perennials such as Gaura and Salvia for long lasting colour during the hot months of summer.

CELEBRATE our South Afri-can seas by participating in The Sustainable Seas Trust’s (SST) exciting nationwide photographic competition. “One of the best ways to encourage people to think about the environment, cel-ebrate the beauty of South Africa and become part of the conservation movement is to involve them in taking ac-tion,” Dr Tony Ribbink, SST’s founding trustee and director said adding that conservation and sustainability depend on people choosing to behave in ways that care for the envi-ronment. “The action of picking up a camera and thinking about the environment being pho-tographed is one small step in the right direction. If many people take this small step, then the overall cumulative commitment has the potential to become a powerful move-ment, especially if the youth of today is involved,” Dr Rib-bink said. “A further step is for the public to evaluate the photographs and vote for those which they think are excellent and de-serve to be published and win
awards. Once again, people need to think about the envi-ronment and the messages related to conservation and sustainability. Another small, active step!” he added. The photographs selected by the public and professional judges will be published in a book to celebrate 20 years of the New South Africa with a focus on the Splendours of South African Seas. Winning photographs are eligible for a variety of sponsored prizes offered by SST and its part-ners including BirdLife South Africa. The four photographic catego-ries are: Ocean Landscapes; Sport and Recreation; Cul-ture and History; Marine Life – plants and animals, including invertebrates. The competition will be judged by Fiona Ayerst, Peter van Kets, Eleanor Yeld Hutchings, Dalfrenzo Laing, Peter Chad-wick and Hanli Prinsloo.Visit the Sustainable Seas Trust & SEA PLEDGE Face-book page to like your favou-rite entry of visit the website: www.sst.org.za for more in-formation about the rules and prizes.
