VICE COMMODORE’S REPORT by Bill Adams

January brings us to the beginning of our 25th year. In addition to our traditional activities and Americas Cup events, anniversary events will be scheduled. This year's Club Schedule will be a joint planning effort. Toni Heyneker and Eleanor Harrison will be planning the traditional parties and celebrations our Club has always enjoyed, and Eugene Hu and his team will be planning a separate slate of events specifically to recognize the Club history and heritage. We kick off the year with a Club facelift, which will include painting and floor refinishing. Please join us on January 7th for a 'work party' barbeque. We need volunteers to help us take down our flags and decorations before the painting begins. Lynda Maybruk will be coordinating the volunteers, so please raise your hand. Many hands make light work, and it should be a fun few hours. We're also going to need help putting it all back together on the 11th in the afternoon before the members meeting. The Club will only be closed for 4 days so normal weekend meal service - and of course bar service - will be available to members at the regular hours. Don't be afraid to come in. We all assume that the 49ers will continue their quest in the playoffs in January and we hope you will plan to join your friends at the Club to enjoy these games, along with our own version of the tailgate barbecue. They play at home on Sunday the 13th in the divisional round and we hope again on Sunday the 20th in the NFC Championship...with Super Bowl Sunday February 3rd to follow. Go 'Niners! Racing will bring a party to the Club on January 19th with an Island Fever race, so join us for a race meal and congratulate the cold and wet sailors with a bracing round of Toddies and Irish Coffee. Please remember to include volunteer work at the Club in your New Year's resolutions. This is going to be a very full year and we have lots of opportunities to host events, to support member-organized meals, and to work on planning committees. The best time to start is in January. Enjoy the Club more by participating as a volunteer. ~~~ _/) ~~~

REAR COMMODORE’S REPORT by Milt Smith

Greetings to all! I hope you are still basking in the joy of the Holidays. First, thank you to everyone who participated in the on the water activities of 2012, it was busy and fun. 2013 will be every bit as busy and just as enjoyable. My quick review of the schedule indicates at least 30 days of racing and 15 to 20 days of cruise-out activity, five weeks of Jr. Sailing and some exciting activity with BAADS as they endeavor to host the North-American All Access Championship. To make it all work we depend heavily on volunteers. In 2012 we used at least 2,500 - 3,000 volunteer hours to run our on the water programs, we will easily need as many in 2013. The good news…on the water activities are fun, so please consider volunteering. Some of my goals for the year: 1) Make sure our SBYC boats are properly maintained and always available for the tasks they are assigned, 2) Establish a long-term vision and budget strategy to support our Jr. Sailing program, 3) Through the leadership of the Executive Race Committee and the Race Committee volunteers, deliver excellent racing support for the more than 30 racing days we have scheduled, 4) Execute a cruise-out program that is fun for all, takes us to new places and attracts new cruisers, 5) Continue the qualification of new members for the race committee and skippers for our SBYC boats, 6) Assist in recruiting new volunteers for Jr. Sailing, cruise-outs, boat maintenance and the care of our racing and cruising gear, 7) Support the activities of our America’s Cup Committee, 8) Other priorities as they come along, feel free to contact me with your ideas. Staff Commodore Martin Fay has often said “Many hands make light work.” In my mind this quote is so true and so important that it has become a mantra for our Club.

(Commodore’s Report continues) For those of you with varnishing skills, we hope you'll volunteer some time to help refinish our barstools. And refinish the front door. A front door for which we plan to install, finally, a power opener for our wheelchair bound sailors and anyone bringing coolers, carts, or equipment across the threshold. Then there's that America's Cup thing. Oldest international sporting trophy, to be contested in the newest, fastest, scariest boats ever. This year, right here. Finally, I wanted to share here the members I recognized for special awards at our Installation Dinner last month:

• Kevin and Lori Wilkinson – Commodore's Award for massively expanding youth sailing

• Wendy Hanrahan – Member of the Year for organizing key family events, our 1st place win in the PICYA Opening Day Parade, and our successful auction

• Hugh Coppen – For meritorious service as Head OOD, including much-appreciated bar margins

• Lynda Maybruck – For meritorious service toward success of our America's Cup events in conjunction with Chairperson Lisa Gidley

• Ken Ludlum – For meritorious (and generally thankless) service as WaveLength editor

• Karen Wheeler – For meritorious service as Cruise Out Chairperson

Race committee members were acknowledged at a separate event hosted by Staff Commodore (and the Bay Area's newest regional race officer!) Nancy Demauro. Happy New Year, Happy 25th, and Happy America's Cup XXXIV! ~~~ _/) ~~~ Paul V. Oliva, Catalina 310 Time & Tide

SAN FRANCISCO REPRESENTED IN YOUTH CUP

by Paul Oliva

Thanksgiving week was tough, but the holidays will be sweet for three young Bay Area sailors who survived grueling tryouts in November to become San Francisco's entry in the Red Bull Youth America's

Cup in September. The three are part of a crew called American Youth Sailing Force that made it through the team selection trials in which six teams competed - nearly 40 sailors ages 19 to 24. They furiously cranked winches, tripped through agility drills and were challenged on endurance, sailing and communication skills on an ultra-fast 45-foot racing catamaran - the type that will be used next year to try to win a new international America's Cup trophy for college-age sailors. Then, the waiting.

Michael Radziejowski, 21, a Berkeley native and UC Santa Cruz senior, was a standout in the trials. But would his

dream of America's Cup involvement as a sailor be realized? More importantly, how about a big step toward a professional sailing career during the months before graduation and what're-you-gonna-do-with-your-life-kid questions? These thoughts swirled in Radziejowski's head through a long week that included five Thanksgiving celebrations with friends and family. He had retired to his Santa Cruz pad with his girlfriend over that weekend when an email appeared on his iPhone from team manager Ian Andrewes: The team was in.

(Oliva continues)

American Youth Sailing Force would be San Francisco's team in the contest, competing against one other U.S. team and an unknown number of foreign teams, all college age. "It was quite surreal," Radziejowski said. "It started off as an idea just a year ago. I was absolutely thrilled. I got what I wanted for Christmas, and the official announcement was on my birthday, so it was a birthday present, too." Six crew are allowed, and the team roster has seven. The extra person serves as a backup - and a bit of competition for who actually gets to race, and who gets to helm. The team: Radziejowski is big and strong, so he'll probably stay the guy who bounces around the boat grinding winches and manhandling controls, and he was voted skipper by the crew. Joining him is San Francisco resident David Liebenberg, 21, who is attending Tufts University in Massachusetts, and fellow Banana Slug Tomas Pastalka, 22, from Tiburon. Andrewes, 22, is from Seattle and a recent graduate of Pacific Maritime Institute. Also on the team are two guys Andrewes knows through school and sailing circles in Seattle: Seattle University student Evan Sjostedt, 19 (from Long Beach), and Matt Pistay, 22 (from Zenda, Wis.). Then there's Michael Menninger, 23. Originally from Newport Beach (Orange County), he attended St. Mary's College of Maryland and joined American Youth Sailing Force after his strong performance in the trials with another team. They're all now facing the extraordinary endurance, strength and reaction demands of the boat. On a boat that generates maximum heart rates on the professional adult crews, endurance will be the toughest part. It won't get easier. As Andrewes said after the announcement, "It's a huge weight lifted off our shoulders to be selected. But now, going into this next step, it doesn't mean it's going to get easier." The Red Bull Youth America's Cup runs Sept.1st- 4th, sandwiched between the America's Cup challenger eliminations known as the Louis Vuitton Cup and the final two-week America's Cup showdown.

In the special rules developed for this new event to groom rising stars of sailing, the United States gets two teams as holder of the Cup. One - Radziejowski's team - represents the host city of San Francisco. The other, called Team America Racing, represents the nation as a whole and has team members from California, Florida and Virginia. Both teams will be supported and trained by current Cup holder Oracle Team USA. Other countries get to decide how they will choose and train teams. It is unknown how many will make the starting line, though interest is high. "It's a massive steppingstone toward getting involved with the America's Cup," said Oracle Team USA coach Darren Bundock. American Youth Sailing Force is fundraising to supplement the training and facilities support from Oracle Team USA. They have partnered with the nonprofit Skiff Sailing Foundation to accept tax-deductible donations. For more information: www.americanyouthsailingforce.com. Gifts for your sailor: America's Cup gifts look like a hot ticket this year for those who want to turn out in style for the 34th America's Cup. Beyond the requisite ball caps and T-shirts, there are branded chocolates, fine art, branded cases for iPads and other electronics, and soon you'll be seeing a line of premium bathrobes. Special promotions will be available online at shop.americascup.com and in the Official America's Cup Team Store in the next few weeks. The Pier 27-29 shop has in-store specials every Friday, Saturday and Sunday before Christmas. This weekend's promotion is 30 percent off all jackets, excluding team gear. ~~~ _/) ~~~

(Rear Commodore’s Report continues) So far this year Paul Janofsky has stepped up, once again, as Fleet Captain, at least for Anabel. Kathleen Dunn and Diane Thompson will co-direct our cruise-outs along with help from new member John Prouty. Nancy Demauro will lead the Executive Race Committee while Kevin and Lori Wilkinson and Brett Dewire continue to lead the Jr. Sailing program. Most of our stalwart Race Committee, Jr. Sailing volunteers, Anabel Skippers and other volunteers have committed for 2013 but we need more. In addition to Race Committee, Jr. Sailing, and skippers, we need volunteers to maintain our gear, you know… ropes, anchors, marks, washing down the boats from time to time etc. We would love to have you volunteer!!! “Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” ― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows If Grahame’s quote rings true then give me a call and I’ll find you a place to mess about to your heart’s content. NAPA COUNTY WINE INDUSTRY GENERATES OVER $50 BILLION PER YEAR

by Leslie Hennessy

Who would have thought that the Napa Valley wine business does $50 Billion per year? The region’s wine production has a $13.3 billion economic impact on Napa County, a $25.9 billion impact on California as a whole and a $50.3 billion impact across the U. S.

The report’s scope reached from the $3.7 billion wholesale, $777.7 million direct sales and $841 million export sales revenues achieved by Napa’s 789 licensed wineries to factors such as the $1.0 billion generated by wine tourism expenditure.

Within Napa County itself, the wine industry was calculated as generating a $2.1 billion wage contribution across 46,000 employees. This figure rose to $9 billion across 303,000 employees when the impact of Napa’s wine industry was extended across the U. S.

In addition, the industry’s total tax contribution generated over $5 billion, while a further $84 million came from charitable contributions.

The report also found that Napa accounted for 20% of California’s total wine production and “between 16% and 17.5%” of all the wine produced in the US. Meanwhile, sales of Napa wine accounted for 52% of the total retail value of all Californian wine sold in 2011 and 26.6% of the state’s retail volume sales. No wonder planted vineyards sell for $250,000 per acre! SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT TO WAVELENGTH READERS

Your long time Editor will soon be retiring from the head of the Editorial Staff at the WaveLength. I have enjoyed immensely the privilege of delivering the latest news and views about all things nautical and aquatic to the loyal readers of this fine publication. Among the many accomplishments achieved during my Editorship, and perhaps the one of which I am most proud, has been the addition of the little sailboats at the end of each article. Although I know most of you may be devastated by this news, I assure you very capable Club members are stepping into these medium size shoes. Patti Mangnan and Elaine Garvey will be co-Editors, and I will be helping them for the next few issues to assure a smooth transition. So for all you who have eagerly looked forward to your WaveLength landing in your inbox the last two years, soyonara, you’re still in very good hands, and see you around the Club! ~~_/) ~~~ Ken Ludlum
