January 2012
Happy New Year!
What kind of quilty resolutions did you make to start 2012?
I have resolved to:
1) finish those 2 UFO’s I submitted for the challenge,
2) make 2 quilts for charities,
3) fix up my sewing cave, and
4) drink more wine.
Yes, drinking more wine is quilt-related. It gets those creative
sparks flying, helps me take a new perspective to some old
projects, and it makes me take on more projects than I could
possibly do! Yes, the wine makes me do that!
I am looking forward to more fun in the guild this year and
learning some new techniques. I expect to see some very inter-
esting quilts when 3 of our members talk about their quilty life
at our January meeting. See you then!
Marianne
Journeys of 3 MVQ members and see their quilts and other crafts they do.
Saturday workshop will be CRAZY QUILTING by our own Susan Richards,
Best of Show 2011 at MVQ, who will focus on stitchery and ribbon embroidery
on the block.
We have TWO UFO occasions at MVQ.
#1 UFO AUCTION to be held at the February meeting.
Items that you don’t want to finish, fabric that you no longer want, tools, accessories, etc. are auctioned off in both a
silent and a live auction.
DO NOT DONATE BOOKS OR MAGAZINES [these sell
like wildfire at the Quilt Show White elephant table]
DO NOT BRING a LARGE item to the JANUARY Mtg.
Tell Maggie what it is and she will put it on the list– bring it
the night of the AUCTION.
It is helpful to write the yardage of any fabric that is donated.
Maggie Judd
#2
Carol Robinson has organized a listing of 70 quilts that 19 members have challenged themselves to finish for the April meeting or the Quilt Show.
The incentive is a chit that will be in a raffle for
Money to be given at the end of the challenge.
Make sure to tell Carol when you finish.
February – UFO Auction and Saturday will be open sew for charity of the year
March – Froncie Quinn – www.hooplapatterns.com – She will be
talking to us about the story of Florence Petro and her quilt Calico
Garden which will be the topic of the Saturday workshop on hand
piecing and hand appliqué.
April Suzanne Marshall – www.suzannequilts.com – She has won awards at Paducah
and Houston for her appliqué and hand quilting. She will do a talk on The Evolution of
a Quiltmaker and talk about design inspirations from her award winning quilts. She will
offer a Friday class on hand quilting and a Saturday class on appliqué.
May – Lenore Crawford – www.lenorecrawford.com – She will talk about fusing and
fabric painting with quilts. She will do a Friday workshop on Mini Blended Fabric Col-
lages and a Saturday workshop on fusible flowers.
June – An end of year dessert social – with a talk from Pam Potter from NH Quilt Em-
porium on what you can do with those jelly rolls, layer cakes, five inch squares etc.
Doris Bennett is our “SUNSHINE LADY”- So if you know of a guild member who needs a little
sun in her life– let Doris know!

Mary and Ann Stobbs are doing the
2011 MVQ Mystery Quilt. Part will be posted on the Blog and copies will be available at the meeting. It is an original pattern and called "Dancing with the Squares".
Thanks, Ann Stobbs
Even though winter seems to have come late, SPRING will be AHEAD……….and the next
block raffle will put us in the mood. To review:
BLOCK RAFFLE = an opportunity to make just one block for a chance on winning
enough blocks to make a small quilt.
The theme fabric and your additional lights and brights will produce blocks that can be used
in an Easter table runner, or a child’s cheery napping quilt. You can win the drawing even if
you were a winner in December.
For $1 you receive a 9” x 11” piece of the selected “theme” fabric, which must be used some-
where in a block created in any design/pattern you choose. You may make additional blocks
for additional chances to enter the raffle. If you need more theme fabric another dollar will
be required. Additional blocks must be in different patterns; that is, no “sets” of the same pat-
tern.
Please read these directions carefully……..they are different from last time:
Instructions for March Block Raffle – Theme: Spring Ahead
For each entry make a 9 “ block (9 ½ “ unfinished)
Add fabrics to coordinate with the provided theme fabric color
For background spaces in your block use a pastel, not white
Do not use solids. Do not use batiks.
DO use at least one piece of a stripe and/or polka dot
Please use quilt-shop quality fabric
Attach your name to each block entered
Theme fabric will be available at January and February meetings. All completed blocks
will be collected and winners drawn at the March 15 meeting
Questions: contact Andrea Bursaw, 978-463-4034 or [email protected]
Sets of blocks are due at the January meeting. You will go home with the same number that
you brought. Joann
Mystery Bus Trip
The Mystery bus trip will be Saturday, March
31st .It is a $10 fee, that is refunded when you
board the bus. We leave from Westgate Plaza
(off 495) in Haverhill. A really fun filled day
with two shops this year. Sign up early so you
don’t miss out.
Thanks, Gail Wozniak R
Start thinking how you can help Karen Malio put on a terrific Quilt Show, April 27th and 28th.
As members of MVQ, we are each required to give 2 hours of volunteering at the show. This can be
done before or during the show. This is a GREAT way to meet members and form friendships.
And don’t forget to finish those quilts and enter them in the Show!
CHALLENGE:
Replicate Your Favorite Greeting Card
Think of all the possibilities this could be – do you have a favorite Mother’s Day Card which has a lovely vase of flowers you want to replicate in fabric , did you just get a Halloween card that has the cutest idea on it, whatever think about these ideas and lots more possibilities. Make a trip to your favorite card shop and see all the ideas out there. The card has to be attached to the quilt when displayed.
Please make it under 30 inches on any given size and a minimum of 12 inches on any side. Prizes will be awarded so start your project early to have it done in time.
For everyone that is participating in the CRAZY QUILT EMBELLISHMENT class in January please be aware
that your CQ square needs to be completed prior to the class. If you need good instructions for constructing
your block here is a website that can show you how.http://cqmagonline.com/vol09iss2/articles/982/index.shtml
When you are gathering the thread, laces and other items for your square feel free to make substitutions
for items you may not be able to find. I will bring hard to find items with me for sale but some items are in
limited supply. If there is something you really want email me at [email protected] and I will try to have
it for you at the class. I enjoy sharing my love for stitching with others so this class will be a lot of fun. Re-
member what we will be doing does not require a sewing machine all the embroidery is done be hand. So
bring your needles and lets have fun stitching. See you in January!!
