After years of planning and prepara-tion, residents, city officials, staff and tree trail sponsors officially celebrated the grand opening of Missouri City’s first Ed-ible Tree Trail.

Visitors to the trail, just west of Mur-phy Road along Oyster Creek, can sample treats created by Mother Nature. Some of the species include Mexican Persimmon and Plum trees as well as Chinese Ju-jube trees. “This is a great opportunity for people of Missouri City to walk these trails and pick a piece of fruit along the way,” said Council Member Robin Elackatt.

The project is 100-percent funded through donations and other grant mon-ey. The trees should mature and bear fruit at different times of the year to help as-sure there is always something to enjoy.

The Edible Arbor Trail is the first of its kind in the region and is managing well despite the drought conditions of the past summer. You can visit the trail along Oys-ter Creek, just west of Murphy Road at Raoul Wallenberg Lane and see or taste for yourself

Trees for Tots 2011MedCare Milestones hosted its 6th

annual Trees for Tots event on Satur-day, December 3rd, from 9am – 1pm, at MedCare Pediatric Rehab Center in Stafford. With the generous support of Community Partners’ donations and contributions from sponsors and fund-raisers, Medcare Milestones gave away over 200 Christmas trees, ornaments and lights to families of children with special needs. Families enjoyed holiday treats and hot cocoa and had their pic-ture made with Santa and his elves.

M r. and Mrs. Scott Pullen of Sugar Land, Texas are pleased to announce the

marriage of their daughter Lyndsay Ann Pullen to Thomas Austin Rodriguez, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rodriguez of Katy, Texas.

The ceremony was held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas on August 13, 2011. Following the ceremony, the parents of the bride hosted a reception at The Houstonian.

The bride’s sister, Kymberly Pullen, served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Jessamy Anderson, Keri Blowey, Katy Flood, Kristiana Hines, Elizabeth Hoppe, Emily Kelly, Lindsay Pickering, Sarah Rice, Natalie Rodriguez, Amy Scott, Liz Soslow and Jeanne Williams. Kehnley Blowey was the fl ower girl, and Linden D’Amico was the ring bearer.

The groom’s cousin, Braden Lomonte, served as best man. Groomsmen were Chris Blanton, Tanner Flood, Trey Geistweidt, David Goodman, Dalton Hale, Charles Henkel, Ryan Moore, Robert Reese, Cameron Rice, Travis Roby, Clayton Warren and Randy Yates.

Megan Cherry, Megan Livingston, Ansley Roan and Angela Sikorski were in the house party. The ushers were Clay Guest, Bryan Janhsen, Kyle Martin and Chris McBride.

Lyndsay graduated from Clements High School and earned a degree in Public Relations from Texas Tech University where she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority.

Thomas graduated from Taylor High School and earned a degree in Landscape Architecture from Texas Tech University and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity.

The couple met in November 2008 through mutual friends. After a honeymoon in Costa Rica, the couple will live in Houston.

W e are pleased to announce the marriage of Miss Candace Nicole Tribe to Mr. Brandon

Charles Kircher on Saturday, October 22, 2011. The happy couple was united at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chap-pell Hill, Texas, which is also where Can-dace’s great grandmother, great aunts, and grandmother were married years ago. Her parents also met there. Father Jozef Musiol offi ciated the ceremony and music was pro-vided by Tena Helm and Cheryl Amelang.

The bride is the daughter of Richard and Gerry Tribe, who reside in Katy. She is the granddaughter of the late Bill and Gertrude Twardowski and the late Wil-lard and Frances Tribe.

The groom is the son of Steve and Debi Rochelle Fishman who live in Pennsylvania, and Allan and Joy Kircher, who live in South Carolina. He is the grandson of Joanne Kirch-er and the late Ronald Kircher.

The bridal party included many fam-ily and friends. Brooke Fitzgerald served as Candace’s maid of honor and the bridesmaids were Jennie Brannigan, Erika Brown, Lind-say Graham, Jessica Hawkes, Mallory Jaeger, Jennifer Jasper, Dawn Kittel, and Stephanie Tribe. Candace’s oldest niece Chloe Tribe was a junior bridesmaid. Brandon’s two brothers, Jeff and Tylor Kircher, served as his best men and the groomsmen were Pete Blake, Whit-ney Ellis, Justin Flood, Raza Kazmi, Sacha Pictet, Rory Torrey, and Philip Tribe. Ty Tribe served as the ring bearer and the fl ower girls were Ally and Avery Tribe. Ushers were Byron and Chad Tribe. Hostesses were Nicole Tribe and Liz Stewart.

Following the ceremony, the bride’s par-ents hosted a cocktail hour and reception at The Inn at Dos Brisas, with over 250 guests. During cocktail hour, they enjoyed the won-derful jazz sounds of the Anthony Caceres Band with an unforgettable view on the patio deck with infi nity pool and furnished with country chic sofas, wicker coffee tables, and cabanas, all of which overlooked an open country sky line.

After cocktail hour, guests moved into a seven thousand square foot white-draped tent with several sparkling chandeliers, which hung inside huge wrought iron bird cages, all accented by cascading magno-lia leaf vines. Guests were seated at mirror topped tables and long mahogany tables decorated by thousands of fresh fl owers in-cluding white and plum colored phalaenopis orchids - absolutely breathe - taking ambi-ence by Scott Kontizer with Darryl & Co and Lisa Tran with Blooming Gallery. This was topped with a perfectly executed menu with the collaboration of Cordua/MJC Ca-tering and the Inn at Dos Brisas. Music and Entertainment was by The Eclipse Band and Orchestra and a sweet ending featured a seven-tiered cake by Susie’s Cake Creation and groom’s cake by Nicki Tribe. Then guests danced the night away to the tunes of the Eclipse Band & Orchestra. Planning and coordination of wedding was by Mai Dang with Honeydew Events.

Mrs. Candace and Mr. Brandon Kircher, graduates of TCU and USC- Akin, have begun their new journey in life together in Texas after returning from their honeymoon in Paris and Bali.

In a special public meeting held Thurs-day, December 1st at Rosenberg City Hall, the Rosenberg Development Corpo-ration (RDC) heard a proposal from Impe-rial Arts (IA) to make Rosenberg’s historic downtown district a destination for arts and culture.

If approved as presented, a partner-ship between RDC and IA would estab-lish the Rosenberg Arts Center by Spring 2012, a restored historic Cole Theater by Fall 2013, and recognition of the historic downtown district as a sanctioned “Cul-tural District” by the Texas Commission on the Arts by the end of 2013. The RDC Board expressed enthusiasm and interest in moving forward with this proposal, and directed staff to continue to develop specif-ic details related to a formal partnership with IA.

Edward Crowell III, Imperial Arts’ Founder and Executive Director, said, “This is going to be an exciting journey with lofty goals to be accomplished in a short time period. With the support of the RDC and the City of Rosenberg, and with Imperial Arts’ talent and experience, this will become a reality and bring commu-nity, commerce and tourism to downtown Rosenberg.”

Matt Fielder, Economic Development Director, said, “We’re excited about the op-portunity to have continued investment in our historic downtown and to preserve the Cole Theatre as a Rosenberg landmark. This partnership promises to bring new opportunities for cultural arts to our com-munity, as well as be a magnet to draw

people to Rosenberg from other areas. I believe it will be an important boost to the businesses downtown and on Avenue H.”

The development plan presented by IA consists of three major phases: First, es-tablishment of the Rosenberg Arts Center in historic downtown, offering a variety of live performances, fi lms, art exhibits, and arts education programming; Second, the re-opening of the historic Cole Theater, restored to its historic art deco-style glory, offering major productions of professional opera, theatre, concerts, fi lms, art exhib-its, and community events; and Third, the designation of historic downtown Rosenberg as a “Cultural District” by the Texas Commission on the Arts – with mu-seums, shops, landmarks, the Rosenberg Arts Center, and the restored Cole The-ater as important components of commu-nity, commerce, and tourism.

Are you one of thousands of Ameri-cans who suffer from a disease condi-tion referred to as peripheral neu-ropathy? Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nerves characterized by tingling or burning sensation, weakness, muscle aches or cramps, diffi culties with balance, and at times autonomic nervous system involvement characterized by dizzi-ness, sexual dysfunction, or change of blood pressure especially in upright position. Peripheral neuropathies have generally a gradual onset and slow pro-gression. A typical description of the tingling and numbness is in a “glove and stocking” fashion that is mainly in the lower legs and distal aspects of the upper extremities. Tingling sensa-tion or burning pain are very common symptoms with peripheral neuropathy predominantly due to involvement of the sensory nerves; however, in the advanced cases, motor nerves are also involved where weakness and gait dif-fi culties can also be predominant the clinical presentation.

In many cases, a strong family his-tory is noteworthy; however, many oth-er cases may not have any underlying cause contributing to the disease. It is important to have a formal neurologi-cal evaluation and a careful search for correctable causes as for example dia-betes mellitus, renal failure, disorder of thyroid glands, exposure to drugs and toxins, or heavy metals like arsenic, lead, mercury, or thallium, industrial solvents or pesticides, vitamin defi cien-cies, or any underlying malignancies or tumors which can also be associated with peripheral neuropathy.

On November 5th, competing for the fi rst time in the Muscle Mania Space City Body Building Show, Novice Divi-sion, Jeremy placed 2nd in the Heavy Weight Division. “I wanted to challenge myself to take it to a higher level. This is beyond what a regular exerciser would do, but as I challenged myself, I was able to accomplish something extraordinary,” said Jeremy.

Jeremy lost 45 pounds over a dedicat-ed 16-week period and sculpted his body, doing it all naturally without steroids, through an intense seven-day training regimen and very strict diet. But no mat-ter where they go or what they experience both boy and horse keep forging ahead, driven by devotion and the hope of re-turning home. Adapted from one of the great modern stories of friendship and war, the fi lm is drawn from the novel that sparked a rousing stage hit, gar-nering fi ve Tony Awards, including Best Play. Now, Spielberg unfolds this heartwarming tale for all ages with a return to the territory where big screen cinema and intimate storytelling meet.

The journey begins on the cusp of WWI as an English farming family buys a fi ery hunter colt at auction despite not having the funds to pay for him. Named Joey, the horse seems to be nothing but a loss for

struggling Ted and Rosie Narracott (Peter Mullan and Emily Watson), but their son Albert (Jeremy Irvine) is determined to tame and train him, making the most of Joey’s enthralling spirit, speed and affec-tion. The two are inseparable, but when war breaks out, they are pulled apart as Joey is sold from under him and heads to the front as the mount of a dashing British cavalry offi cer. Thus starts Joey’s labyrinthine trek through joy and sorrow, hardship and wonder, as this simple horse becomes a remarkable hero, touching lives on all sides of the war with his innocence, purity of motive, and unconditional devo-tion to his human friends. He pulls battle-fi eld ambulances, whisks away German soldiers on the run, fi res the imagination of a French girl and hauls colossal can-nons up mountains. As the fi lm builds to its powerful climax, and Albert heads into the trenches on his own perilous mission, Joey fi nds himself ensnared in the haunt-ing No Man’s Land between British and German territory. But even when it seems there can be no return, he sets in motion a momentary chance for peace and holds fast to a dream of reunion and renewal.

What Spielberg has on his hands is essentially a Saving Private Ryan set against the backdrop of WWI whose focus

is that of a horse. One of the most magnet-ic qualities of the fi lm is its emotion. The viewer will experience the full gamut due to everything about the fi lm. The casting, the cinematography, as well as the score, all combine to provide a grandiose fi lm that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The emotion and honesty of the fi lm are just raw through-out. The battle, sequence involving the Argonne is phenomenal both in its pre-sentation and scope. Immediately after the brutality of the battle, your emotions will once again be twisted as two enemies are both drawn to the center of the battle-fi eld because of their love of horses. What happens proves there is hope in the world no matter who you are or where you come from. Don't pass up War Horse as it will defi nitely be involved in the Oscar race this year. H

The American Red Cross Super Ball XI scheduled for Saturday, Janu-ary 28th at Safari Texas in Richmond, promises to be the biggest – and best – indoor tailgate party in town! Celebrat-ing their eleventh year, Super Ball XI benefits the American Red Cross Fort Bend Office located in and serving Fort Bend County, and this year’s proceeds will support program operations, service delivery/emergency relief to our commu-nity and general operating needs.

The event features a tailgate-themed buffet full of football food favorites, a Half-Time Dance with music by The Spiffington’s and a midway with games allowing guests to compete. Midway games include two Basketball Shoot-Outs sponsored by Rotary Club of Rich-mond, the Football Toss sponsored by Stan and Edie Speer and the Best Buy Raceway sponsored by Best Buy. Finals will be held for the high scorers in each competition and winners of these events will receive basketball goals, a sporting goods gift certificate and a Wii game sys-tem.

The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) was pleased to present a $5,000 Community Assistance Fund (CAF) grant to Junior Achievement of South-east Texas, which will be used to sup-port its educational programs in Fort Bend County. These funds will be used to educate and inspire young women through two Women’s Leadership Con-ferences.

Junior Achievement provides K-12 economic focused programs for use in classroom and after-school settings. Their programs help bring relevancy to the work students are doing in their classrooms as well as prepares them for the outside world. Junior Achievement promotes volunteerism by bringing out-side volunteers to the students to pro-mote educational workforce readiness and economics.

FBJSL accepts CAF applications throughout the year for grant funding up to $5,000 per year. Applicants must be nonprofit organizations serving Fort Bend County with requests to fund a critical need, pilot program and/or ex-pand a significant service to the commu-nity. Pregnancy Resource Center Celebrates 30 Years of Service and

Plans to Expand Hours

Pregnancy Resource Center of Fort Bend County (PRC) celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year. We are so hon-ored to have contributed to the commu-nity for this many years! It is awesome to think of the lives of the women, men and children that we have served over these years.

As the PRC begins the process of converting to a medical facility in 2012, we are planning to expand our hours of service. It is our goal to be available for clients who work or go to school. In do-ing so, we have a great need for Peer Counselor volunteers. Recent class graduate, Lynn Hill states, “So much of the training covers things that I would never have known. Birth is truly a miracle and going through the training made the counseling so much easier, it was so worth it!”

The training for this volunteer op-portunity is a seven class series begin-ning on Thursday, February 2nd. The six classes run all month, every Tues-day and Thursday, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm (excluding Valentine’s Day). The 7th and fi nal class is on Saturday, February 25th from 9:00 to 3:00 pm. Bill Austin recently sold his gym-nastic center to Robert Gifford, a longtime Sugar Land resident. Gif-ford has operated several successful karate schools in Fort Bend County for the past 30 years, and his students have received both state and national awards in martial arts competition. His organization has also donated over $175,000 to charitable foundations.

Sugar Land Gymnastics, Karate and Dance (SLG) is the new name for the gymnastics center, which is located at 16215 Lexington Blvd. across from the First Colony Mall. The facility

has been totally remodeled and is now a state-of-the-art gymnastics facility boasting new fl oors, two dance rooms, new gym equipment and a comfortable lounge.

Gifford said, “Our focus will be on kids and producing Olympic caliber athletes. Our staff has the creden-tials and experience to get it done. We have been extremely surprised by the response we have gotten thus far. We have only been open a few months, and our spots are already fi lling up.”

Missouri City Fire & Rescue Service announces that Judy Lefevers has joined the team as Emergency Management Co-ordinator. She brings 15 years of emergency management ex-perience to the position. Most recently, Lefevers was the Re-gional Planning Coordinator for the Fort Bend County Offi ce of Emergency Management, a position she had held since Au-gust, 2010. She was responsible for the development, main-tenance, and revision of the County’s comprehensive emer-gency management plans.

“Judy’s vast experience will bring a lot of value to the City and the division of emergency preparedness,” Fire Chief Russell Sander said. “We’re looking for-ward to the contributions she will make to our team.”

Prior to her work with Fort Bend County, Lefevers spent eight years with the U.S. Army in a civilian role putting her expertise to work in contingency and exercise planning in Virginia and Puerto Rico. Her accomplishments included planning and executing an 18-nation security exercise in the Caribbean with

more than 1,200 participants and serving as Planning Section Chief in the Fort Eu-stis, Virginia Emergency Operations Cen-ter during Hurricane Isabel. Prior to her work with the Army, Lefevers served six years active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard.

She has a Master’s degree in Project Management from Colorado Technical University and a Bachelor of Science de-gree in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture from the United States Coast Guard Academy. Originally from Baton Rouge , Louisiana , Lefevers now lives in Katy with her husband and daughter.

ARTreach, a non-profit organiza-tion headquartered in North Fort Bend County, hosts a roster

of professional artists with programs that support education and social skills serving children at risk, children and adults with special needs, the elderly and the disabled. They reach – and deliver services – to many in our community by partnering with social services agencies, government entities, and school districts to deliver the programs to needy popula-tions, and collaborate with other non-profit art organizations to develop and pilot expanding outreach programs. AR-Treach relies on numerous volunteers as well as grants and donations to subsidize program fees in order to assure quality art programs remain affordable and free to neglected populations in Fort Bend County. Three of the organization’s Fort Bend community partners are:

Mamie George Community CenterARTreach programs benefiting senior

citizens, the elderly and disabled in Fort Bend County run weekly at the Mamie George Community Center in Richmond. The program runs every Thursday from 10-11:30 am and is free for Fort Bend County seniors. The program teaches ceramics, canvas painting, printmak-ing and unique projects that support environmental awareness, education, health and nutrition. The ARTreach

They arrived in the United States as an unaccompanied minor and are placed in foster care. There are many unique circumstances the chil-dren have to overcome, including learn-ing English and acclimating to Ameri-can culture. The ARTreach program tries to bridge the numerous commu-nication gaps, and build new relation-ships by introducing the wide range of cultural influences represented in America through the arts. ARTreach has involved the children in music and drumming and introduced painting and ceramics as an avenue that can

• 360 seniors are served quarterly through weekly workshops offered at Mamie George Community Center in Richmond and other senior living com-munities in the ARTreach service area. • 5000 students benefit directly and indirectly from campus mural projects and after school Mentoring through Art programs and special projects serving children at risk in the Houston, Fort Bend and Katy school districts. • 120 children at highest risk are benefitting through the Harris County and Fort Bend County juve-nile justice system and through local foster care programs and residential treatment centers.

• 100 children and adults with special needs are benefiting annually from specialized life skill programs and cultural arts presentations in schools and communities.• 50-100 refugees and immigrants are benefitting from workshops that sup-port literacy, educational nutrition and emotional health.

The less invasive imaging technology developed by Align Technology Corpora-tion uses visible light to capture images and does not emit radioactive waves. Fort Bend Junior Service League (FB-JSL) and Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (MSLH) proudly accepted a check from the Sports Medicine Group of Kempner High School in the amount of $700, repre-senting the results of a week-long project raising funds to support breast cancer awareness during the month of October. The League will use the donation from Kempner High School to further the com-munity’s fight against breast cancer. FB-JSL is working with the American Cancer Society in an ongoing, collaborative effort to provide financial support for programs and services designed to improve quality of life, provide access to early detection and treatment, and diminish suffering for Fort Bend county breast cancer patients.

Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas sponsored 300 Go Pink t-shirts to all athletic training staff and student trainers of the Fort Bend Independent School District. The Kempner High School girls volley ball teams kicked off the project with a fundraising game and silent auction. The Kempner High School Sports Medicine group comprised of 10 girls sold “Cougars 4 Life” pink bracelets and edu-cated students and staff on breast cancer through the school’s video announcement system. Addison Marshall: Showing Cancer Who is Boss

Addison

A ddison Marshall is a senior at Foster High School in LCISD. His typical day includes running

before school, going to school, lifting weights, completing homework, study-ing and heading to bed around 10:30. However, this teen lives anything but a typical life. Addison was diagnosed with Leukemia during the spring of his freshman year of high school.

During spring football practice of his freshman year, Addison was having in-tense pain in his side. When he went to the doctor, he found out that he had cracked his ribs, but he couldn’t fi gure out what caused the cracked bones. Af-ter a few more tests, the doctors were able to conclude that Addison’s spleen had fi lled up with cancerous cells and burst, thereby cracking his ribs. Addi-son was offi cially diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

Upon receiving his diagnosis, Addi-son’s life quickly changed, and he im-mediately began treatment to fi ght his cancer. Unlike a normal teenager, his second home became M.D. Anderson instead of his best friend’s house, and he now walked the halls of the hospi-tal instead of the crowded high school hallways.

After successful chemotherapy treatments, Addison went on “mainte-nance.” However, three months into “maintenance,” Addison relapsed in April of his sophomore year. The can-cer was now in his spine and brain. Addison knew that this meant more treatment, but he also knew what this meant for the upcoming football sea-son.

Addison loves playing football. He began playing football at the age of six and dreamed of playing high school football. His wish came true freshman year, but was quickly taken away when he was diagnosed that same year. Ad-

dison was still a member of the team and watched from the sidelines, but he was un-able to actually play. After his fi rst round with the disease, Addison was excited to play for his junior year until his relapse when the leukemia entered his spine and brain. However, Addison was bound and determined to play his senior year; he wasn’t going to let the cancer hold him back from doing what he loved. Finally, during the last half of the last game of the season, Addison had the chance to play with his teammates, and they won!

Addison never let the cancer dictate his life and tried to be a normal teenager through his adult-sized struggles. “Live as normal as possible,” said Addison. “That is the secret to crushing cancer.” Even though Addison missed over 60 days of school per year for his treatment, he will graduate on time and in the top 10% of his class.

Addison is an intelligent and athletic young man, but he is also dedicated to helping others. He is a member of NHS, PALS and a mentor to young children who are also fi ghting cancer. The young chil-dren look up to Addison as a role model

and a fun person to “horse” around with at the hospital.

As a cancer survivor with an in-credible amount of determination and perseverance, two prestigious football awards have chosen to recognize Addi-son. At the beginning of December, Ad-dison learned that he had been chosen as a Top 12 Finalist for the High School Football Rudy Awards. This award is given annually to a football player who embodies the values of character, courage, contribution and commit-ment. As a well-deserved nominee, Addison’s football coaches and friends made a short video that details Addi-son’s battle with cancer and his posi-tive outlook through it all. Also, Addi-son was chosen as the Front Line Kids Representative for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Awards. He gave an amaz-ing speech and announced the winner of the award. For his speech at the Lombardi Awards, Addison eloquently summed up his battle with cancer in a few sentences. “Life doesn’t always go the way you plan it, but it is still good; it teaches you to be grateful and have faith that there is a plan that maybe we can’t necessarily understand right now,” said Addison. “That’s why you should always play until the whistle blows.”

For Addison, his fi ght with cancer has given him a new perspective on what is important in life. In the fall, he will attend Texas A&M University to become a physical therapist. Current-ly, Addison is continuing chemotherapy and is scheduled to complete it in June. We wish Addison the best of luck in the future and hope that he never hears a whistle blow. H

B y taking ingredients we know exist but have never had prepared in such a way, the newest member of the Cordua family restaurants, Churrascos in Sugar Land,

opened with plenty of fanfare on December 1 in Sugar Land. And, we are so lucky they did.

I have to admit, I was somewhat taken aback at the exquisite signature Churrasco steak. With the chimichurri sauce and grilling technique, the result is excellent. I may never look at another steak the same way again. If you are not familiar with chimichurri sauce, take note: the fl avor of the meat shines through and is enhanced but not overpowered by the perfectly balanced fl avors. Did you know that it was voted one of Esquire Magazine’s Top 20 Steaks in America?

My next observation during my visit was that everything on the menu is a well-honed combination of Latin American ingredients prepared with due respect to classical European cooking methods – a match made in heaven. Knowing the Cordua name, as we do in Houston, Michael Cordua has made great food, with the hospitality to match his trademark. Americas, Artista, The Amazon Grill and the Churracscos locations in River Oaks and Westchase have achieved a reputation for only the highest caliber dining experience.

I also sampled the Pargo de Lujo, which is a pan roasted Gulf Coast red snapper with jumbo lump crab, shrimp, peeled grape tomatoes, basil and habanero citrus beurre blanc with mascarpone mashed potatoes. The snapper melts in your mouth and is heaped with a generous amount of lump crab, but those peeled grape tomatoes and mascarpone mashed potatoes are really such a lovely surprise with an entrée that has everything going for it.

Before you even consider an entrée, I would suggest an assortment of appetizers to share with the table. I had the Angel Wings, Corn Smoked Crab Fingers and the Ceviche Copacabana because they came highly recommended. The Angel Wings are a light chicken wing with brown butter, habanero papaya sauce and a classic blue cheese dressing. You have to try them! The Corn Smoked Crab Fingers are delivered with a lovely and ample serving of sweet crab with red pepper, jalapenos, scallions, lemon butter and crispy yucca cake. They are out-of-this-world, lick-your-plate-clean good! The Ceviche Copacabana is a Peruvian-style ceviche of fresh market catch and gulf shrimp, avocado, red onion, jalapeno and cilantro served in a carved pineapple. The presentation is impressive and the fl avors make it a joy to devour – almost as much as the two desserts I also included in my meal.

The original Tres Leches is billed as a holiday tradition in Houston, and I now understand why. I would even give up chocolate for it, and I realize that’s a pretty bold statement. The cake is soaked with sweet vanilla-laced cream and then, topped with a decadent Meringue

Ingredients

6 garlic cloves

1 cup curly parsley, chopped

2 cups olive oil

½ cup white wine vinegar

3 tsp oregano

1 tsp salt

1 tsp pepper

Method

In a food processor, pulse garlic

fi nely. Chop the parsley by

hand. Combine all ingredients

in a large bowl. Store in an

airtight container. Best if used

the following day. Baste on

your favorite protein before

grilling. Chimichurri sauce

should not be used in a sauté

pan since the parsley can turn

bitter when fried.

Italiano. I think every special occasion should include it! I also tried the home-made Triple Cream Coconut Ice Cream, which is served in a caramel tuile basket and fresh berries—sublime! If you do prefer chocolate, don’t worry, I saw a Chocolate Truffl e Cake with chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache on the long list of desserts as well.

With respect to the rest of the menu, I couldn’t get to it all. I will tell you that it lacks nothing. You can fi nd soups and salads, side dishes and accompaniments to suit a wide variety of tastes. The lunch menu includes The Churrasco signature steak, Amazon Burger, Torta de Pollo (grilled chicken sandwich), salads and many other selections along with a Churrasco Lunch Trio served Monday thru Saturdays from 11 am to 4 pm. There is also a Sunday Brunch. If you have not been to Churrascos and experienced fi rst-hand, the expertly developed dishes from the ingredients of the Americas, you are doing yourself quite a disservice.

Finding Treasures in Unexpected Ways!

About six months ago, one of my clients stepped out of her car for a shoot, and I heard

a familiar jingle. At fi rst, I could not place the sound, but after just a second, I realized that it was coming from her shoes. Once I glanced down, I saw her wearing a shoe that almost made me cry. They were a sandal with tiny little glass leaves and grapes that jingled when she walked, and all of these memories of my mother came fl ooding back to me. Mother had been a shoe person if ever there was one, and she had a pair of white sandals with red and purple grapes that surely had been made by the same designer nearly 35 years prior!

My client asked me to tell her the story as I stood there and kept saying “Oh my, oh my!” I explained to her that after mother had been killed, my father gave many of her

clothes and shoes away. He was like most men not thinking about a day in the future when I would want to wear these things or might enjoy just having them. In his haste to try to painfully move on, it was understand-able that he gift to her closest friends who were the same size all of these “things.” Years later, I recall, perhaps in high school specifi cally asking him for those white sandals. I remembered them from when I was a little girl and wanted very much to have them. I was crushed to fi nd that they had been giv-en away. There’s a lot about losing a mother at an early age that is diffi cult to describe or for others to understand, but in a nutshell, it’s always the small things you remember. It might be a sound or a smell. For me, it was the clicking of those shoes, and I felt like I had found something of mother that had been lost to me.

My client immediately pulled her foot out of the shoe, and asked me to try it on, and it fi t as we are the same size. I told her that I could not take them but asked her for the manu-facturer, and said if she ever found anything similar to please buy a pair for me. Two months later, she texted me that she had returned to Swit-zerland and had been searching for the shoes for me only to discover they were nowhere to be found! I could hardly believe that she would have gone to so much trouble! She said at the next shoot she was bringing hers to me, and I told her absolutely not. I did not intend to have her give up her gloriously fab shoes for me! She wasn’t listening to any of it.

When she brought me the baby for the next visit, she brought me those shoes. I told her how much she means to me and that thanking her would never quite be enough. It was a self-less gesture on her part marking her and my friendship forever. She simply stated that for her it was a “no brainer – those shoes had been mine all along – she had just been the one to fi nd and get them!”

Happy New Year, too by the way. This year, I am asking everyone to look around them and see if they have something ever so small that might be just the perfect gift to a stranger or to a loved one. I never thought I would ever see those shoes again, and now, I have found the most perfect treasure in the most unexpected of ways!
