For families of deployed SoldiersWriting a letter to your Soldier in Afghanistan just got easier AND faster

HooahMail is revolutionizing letter writing! Send your Soldier a letter as often as you like, and he/she will have it in days (usually within 24 hours), not weeks! Unlike e-mail, computer access is not required to read or re-ceive HooahMail, so you don’t have to wonder when the next time your Soldier will have access to a com-puter. Visit HooahMail.us to create and send your letter. You can even attach a photo that will print in black-and-white. The letter is sent to the Hoo-ahMail secure server, and the desig-nated Army Post Office downloads the letter to a special machine, which prints, folds and seals it – keeping the contents confidential. The letter is delivered through unit mail call.

Get snow-deep in adventure Meet your guidesRick KivettAdventure Program Manager

Kivett earned his bachelor’s degree in recreation from the University of Idaho and has worked for MWR since 2003. While serving in the National Guard, he deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom and returned home with a Purple Heart and a renewed appreciation for our freedoms. Kivett’s experience and passion for the outdoors also played a vital role in the War-rior Adventure Quest pilot program at Fort Lewis. WAQ, now an Army-wide program, uses high-adrenaline outdoor activities to help Soldiers transition from the intense stressors of combat back to civilian life.

Amiia CoffeyAdventure Programmer

Coffey developed an appreciation for the military while serving in the Navy. While earning her bachelor’s degree in psychol-ogy from Central Michigan University, she led a variety of outdoor and Habitat for Humanity trips. For the past 12 years, Cof-fey has volunteered for numerous Army programs and has earned the title of Army Family Team Building instructor/Master Trainer. Coffey is also an avid rock climber and certified Wyoming River guide. She enjoys sharing her love of nature and leads Bella Donna tours, an outdoor adventure program designed especially for women.

Operation Give a HugDeployment dolls give Fort Lewis children something to hold on to while deployed parents are away

Kellsie, the daughter of a dual-military couple, hugs her deployment dolls often. “We miss our baby girl so much,” Maj. Danielle DiBacco said of herself and her husband. Her parents and sister’s family are taking care of Kellsie while they are deployed. DiBacco said, “Kellsie seems to always have the mommy doll around her.”

Courtesy photo

Fort Lewis children who are missing Mom and Dad during long deployments have a way to help them feel comforted – deployment dolls from Operation Give a Hug.

The dolls are dressed in ACU fabric, and have a photo-sleeve face and remov-able tag that lists tips and resources for parents to help their children cope with deployment. The dolls also serve as a reminder of the Army Family Cov-enant, and its continuing commitment to providing support to the families.

The program started at Fort Lewis in 2004 and partnered with Child, Youth and School Services in 2008. It

is an all-volunteer, non-profit pro-gram sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Tacoma Foundation and serves as a way to help children cope with a deployment.

“ACS is very appreciative of the support Operation Give a Hug has provided to the Soldiers and family members of the Fort Lewis commu-nity,” says Mobilization and Deploy-ment manager Pam Allen. “These are tough times for all concerned and the dolls help the children feel comforted when their parent is away.”

Although the donated dolls do not come with a recording device, some

parents purchase one to place inside the doll, Allen explains. The deployed parent records “I love you” or a message of their choice, and the child hears the special message each time the doll is hugged.

At Fort Lewis, Operation Give a Hug works with unit Family Readi-ness Groups, Army Community Service’s Mobilization and Deploy-ment office, Military Family Life Counselors, school counselors and local pediatric psychologists.

If you would like a doll for a child of a deployed or deploying Soldier, call ACS Mobilization and Deployment at 253-967-6579 or your unit FRG.

Break down every big job into small components so it doesn’t become overwhelming. Prioritize a list of the work you want to accom-plish each day, and work on the top three items.

Do neck rolls frequently through-out the day to relieve the stiffness and tightness in neck muscles. Let your shoulders drop, and release the tension.

Become more aware of your sur-roundings. By deliberately slowing down your walk and conversation, you absorb more of your surround-ings and reorient yourself to a slower pace.

Avoid being a perfectionist. Put your best effort into everything you do; then relax, and don’t worry about the results.

Temporarily remove yourself from the situation when problems begin to overwhelm you.

Be assertive. Take action and speak clearly and openly about your ideas and needs.

Take time out from your work. Schedule regular vacations and oppor-tunities to get away from it all.

Exercise regularly and moder-ately. Research has suggested regu-lar exercise (three to four times a week), leads to longer and healthier lives.

Maintain a reasonable diet. Three meals a day is important for all of us. Research has suggested that those who eat three meals a day (especially those who eat breakfast) live longer, healthier lives. Avoid junk food and try to eat a balanced diet.

Develop outside interests and activities. Total involvement in job or home responsibilities can produce total isolation and an obsession with work. Relax on weekends by doing something different from your routine during the week.

Think about something entirely different than work. Close your eyes and visualize an extremely relaxing and peaceful scene. Try to see it as clearly and distinctly as you can in your mind’s eye. Color in the trees and the ocean. Focus on color. Let yourself relax, and let the tension slip away. Take a breath – deeply and slowly.

Talk it out. When things get to you, f ind someone you can talk to and confide in. Expressing your feelings allows you to release the feelings of tension and anger that have built up. Effective communica-tion with others is a key factor in being able to cope with stress. Keep the channels of communication open with those close to you. Learn to talk about your frustrations and thoughts.

Resolve to be proactive with your finances in 2010. With these easy-to-follow tips, you’ll be off to a great start.

Figure out a starting point Create a realistic budget for your expenses. Include all household income and expenses. Online software allows for budget tracking from almost anywhere.

Prioritize your debt This will al-low you to successfully reduce your debts while paying the least amount of interest. Every dollar that doesn’t go toward debt can be invested in your future. Look for ways to cut

costs and strive to live within your means.• List all debts, including balance and

interest rates.• Prioritize payments based on interest

rates or highest balances. • Set up a payment plan to pay off

credit cards that are more than 50 percent of their available credit. As cards are paid off, use the ad-ditional amount to continue to pay on other cards.• Make payments on time to avoid late

fees and rate increases.• Use a debt reduction calculator

(vertex42.com) to see how much the extra payment helps.

Build an emergency fund Put away three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a liquid account, and you may be able to avoid dipping into your investments to pay for emergencies.

Contribute the maximum to your IRA Set up an automatic deposit.

Increase your TSP or your 401(k) contributions – starting today Most contributions are typically made before taxes. When you get a raise, increase your contributions.

Don’t panic Selling stock funds in a falling market turns paper losses into real ones. If the market recovers, you’ll miss out on some potentially substan-tial gains if you’re not invested.
