Happy New Year!

The holidays have passed and I hope you had a joyous holi-day season. Hopefully, Santa will bring you lots of toys and goodies for your Porsche. Both of mine are in the garage awaiting a warm day for cleaning and primping.

I hope you have sent in your reservation money to Vic Davis for our January 26 post- holiday banquet. Santa has been busy collecting lots of Porsche goodies for door prizes and he has exceeded our expectation. And speaking of Santa, I would like to recognize the following for their contributions to our door prizes:

Thoroughbred MotorsMeguiar'sPelican PartsGriot's Garage

We have an excellent Tech Session in February on wheels and tires at Matt Shaw's new shop, but there is another excellent event in Huntsville, AL on February 2nd. The article is in the newsletter. Let me know if you are inter-ested in driving or riding down as I am planning to make this event if possible.

Not much else to say other than thank you so much for your assistance and participation in 2007 club activities and I hope to see you at more events in 2008. And finally, please mail Vic your banquet reservations check today. Vic's palm gets itchy when the funds don't show up on time.

FROM 40 HP TO 450 HPby Musik-Stadt VP Michael Doebelin

I grew up in Germany. The area is known as the three country corner, it is where Germany, Switzerland and France border. I received my driver’s license on my 18th birthday, that was some 30 years ago. My first car was a Volkswagen, 40 HP, not really suitable for the no speed limit Auto-bahn and the windy wine hills of South-ern Germany, Black Forest, France, the Swiss mountains and Italy. I did end-less wine tours ev-ery summer to fall. Finally, by age 19, I got a small Triumph Spitfire and went to 60 HP. That was a lot more fun, but I still noticed those 911’s even though they were quick, zooming by, making me stand still.

My uncle owned a car repair shop, servicing only high end Ferrari’s, Laborghini’s, Jaguars, Porsches etc, most of the customers came out of Switzerland. He owned several Porsches - one was a 69 S, 170 HP, 2 li-ters, AC, electric and tinted windows. That luxury and speed was unheard of back then. Driving that thing was out of the question, so I was left to admire it when-ever he visited. My neighbor worked for Monteverdi back then and also had several exotics in his driveway - 300SL Cullwing, DeTomaso and so on. One day he got, for little money, a 73 RS, no value back then, just an old Porsche. I bought it, but then resold it. How little did I know.

A few years later my uncle bought one of the first Tur-bos. The 69 was sitting around and I finally made him a offer, which was based on my “large” income as a student. Skills, begging and negotiations later, I finally got to park it in the garage. It was awesome. Come Sunday morning on the empty Autobahn – it’s a feel-ing which can’t be described! Back then not a lot of traffic and no police. I learned how to pass with on-coming traffic, simply flash the lights and go, common practice back then in France and Italy.

The local Porsche club had always lots of activities scheduled, from wine tours to hill racing. Other activi-ties included just to meet and go for a walk, then grill some brats with beer. There was even a Porsche tennis meet.

One day I drive down the Feldberg when another 911 appeared in my rear mirror, briefly flashing his lights and off we went, racing a good 15 miles. Many years went by and I enjoyed the 911 every day, going to school, then later to the Uni.

After graduation I moved to the US and waited over 10 years to get the spirit back when I noticed a 79 Turbo here in Nashville. I mentioned to the owner that if he ever con-sidered selling to call me. Not much later I re-ceived a call, went for a test drive on I-24, quickly up to 170, then a little sideways down the exit. That was when I knew I was back in the Porsche fam-ily, realizing what I had missed all those years. Soon thereafter I found an 80 Gemballa with a 3.4 BTR RUF Engine and a RUF 5 Speed with limited slip. The car has the RUF Steemwheel, allowing to dial in up to 450 HP. This one is present-ly undergoing a total Resto-ration, even though it was in great condi-tion.

This Christmas Jeri Duncan got me a Carrera Track, including a GT and an Enzo. I am playing already with it. Its great to never grow up.

RENNSPORT REUNION III 2007by Jon Wright & Gary Schield, Musik-Stadt Members

In a single word “Fantastic.” This is a premiere Porsche event put on by PCA and directed by the great Brian Redman. This is, as the headline indicates, the third such event and held ever 3 years. The first event was at Lime Rock and number two and three have been at Daytona International Speedway. With hundreds of historic and vintage Porsches or Porsche powered race cars entered, the event this year was held in Daytona, Florida, a mere 9 to 10 hour drive from the Nashville area. Tropical storm Noel greeted us Thurs-day with rain and 30 – 45 mph wind gust as we drove into Daytona. Friday practice weather was not much better, and one Porsche vintage driver told me that it could get quite “hairy” on

the banks with that amount of wind. Saturday and Sunday could not have been better with clear skies and light wind and temps in the 70’s.

Several of our Porsche friends from Kentucky, Nashville, Alabama, and Florida were there enjoying the smell of racing fuel and listening to the tuned header pipes of the boxer 4, 6, 8, and 12’s along with some water cooled 4’s and 8’s as they tached them up coming out of the first infield horseshoe headed down to the Pedro Ro-driguez corner. There were 5 race groups that made up the entire field

Group 1 – Gumund 2.5 liter and under, 356, RSK, 550, RS61, 911, 914.Group 2 – Eifel 911, all non-turbo cars plus front engines Porsches

Group 3 – Continental, Porsche Cup cars, GT3 1989 and up 911’sGroup 4 – Weissach, Plastic-bodied Porsches and Prototype 906, 907, 908, 910, 917Group 5 – Mulsanne, 956/962, 934, 935

The competition in each class was fast and furious with some pretty serious dicing back and forth of multi-mil-lion dollar cars. Historic and current Porsche Racing drivers were in at-tendance to include Hurley Haywood, Derek Bell, Vic Elf-ord, Brian Redman, George Follmer, Arie Luyendyk, David Hobbs, Sam Posey, Price Cobb, Jurgen Barth, Joe Buzzetta, Jackie Oliver, Jorg Berg-meister and many more.

The atmosphere was genuinely friendly as we visit-ed the totally open paddocks and talked with owners and drivers. Many vendors were there with premium Porsche and other car goodies. PCNA had several cars to test drive and time yourself against the Pros. PCA had corrals for all classes which one could roam through and drool

If you are into historic and current Porsches and their racing development, this is a must see/attend event. We guarantee a fantastic experience.

Porsche Rennsport Reunion III brings together an un-precedented gathering of significant Porsche vintage and current racecars and those who have driven them to victory in the world’s most famous sports car rac-es. Held at three-year intervals, the third edition of Porsche Rennsport Reunion returned to Daytona International Speedway the weekend of Nov. 2-4, 2007. More than just a car show or a racing event, the reunion brings together race cars and drivers from Porsche’s past including Derek Bell, Hurley Haywood, Brain Redman, Richard Atwood, and Vic Elford piloting the same cars that made them legends in the racing world years ago. The featured Porsche’s at this year’s event include the 917, 956 and 962. This one-hour special, produced by Greg Oldham, Sean Belby and Taylor Rollins of Lingner Group Pro-ductions for Speed is a mix of nostalgia, competition and conversations with the personalities that helped shape the Porsche legend and mystique. The program features rare footage of the Can-Am se-ries and the Roger Penske Porsche 917/10 led team of Mark Donahue and George Follmer and their 1972 championship winning effort against the previously dominant McLaren team. Bob Carlson, with Porsche Cars North America, details the hugely successful reunion of Penske and Porsche in the American LeMans Series with the Porsche RS Spyder. The original airdate is Sunday, December 16 at 4 PM, with repeat airings on Monday, December 17 at 2 PM, Saturday, January 12 at 4 PM, and Monday, January 21 at 3 PM. All times listed ET.

WINTERFEST 2008Winterfest 2008 will be held February 15-17 at the Chattanooga Holiday Inn Choo Choo. The cost is $110 for one car and two adults for the weekend, plus lodging. The Choo Choo offers double or king rooms to us at $79 or you can sleep in a train car right on the tracks for $109. This starts with a Friday afternoon welcome party. As you come in to register, we will have plenty of beer, wine and food. You probably won’t need to go to dinner, unless you want to. That evening, there is car cleanup and the fun of all is the “tri-cross.” This is a tricycle race around cones for the best time. Yours truly has been the women’s winner the past two years, somebody needs to beat me. Then back to the food and visiting with Porsche friends. In the past, we have had about 60 cars and nearly 100 peo-ple. The cars are staged in-doors. Saturday b e g i n s with ba-gels and coffee with the concours in the morning. Lunch is on your own, followed by the road rally. The rally fol-lows some of east TN beautiful mountain roads. Later that afternoon, we have the tech quiz and the RC au-tocross. Saturday evening is the “Victory Banquet.” A very nice banquet and awards are given out, along with door prizes. Usually afterwards, we go back to the welcome/registration area to finish off the beer and wine. Sunday morning, we usually arrange a group breakfast somewhere. The Choo Choo has restaurants where you can eat right on site and never leave the Choo Choo, or downtown has so much to offer to eat and for touring along the river front. If any of you have been to Chattanooga, you know that downtown has a lot to see and do. There is a shuttle from the Choo Choo to downtown which is only a mile or so away.

The registration fee includes all of this-food, drinks, banquet, trophies, plus T-shirts for the two of you. We put on a great weekend. What a way to spend a cold winter weekend, visiting with other Porsche lovers and it is inside too.

Dear New Nashville Porsche Friends--

Thank you for welcoming us into the Musik-Stadt Porsche Club! We’ve been “Porsche people” since 1970 and members of PCA off and on (kids & work!) with the San Diego and Monterey clubs. We’re in the process of moving to Nashville from San Diego (we now have a second home here on the north shore—we’re the “trailing grandparents”), and we shipped back our Porsche (silver—2003 Carrera 4S ) last year. We enjoy the social & travel aspects best in-cluding the Tullahoma/ Granny Fishes Drive & Dine. We recently celebrated our “40th Anniversary of our 1st Date” at the Potomac/Founders’ Region’s “Escape into American History”. On our drive up to Wash., D.C. we stayed in historic Staunton, VA (our 2nd visit there); it’s an antebellum town with 3 highlights: the Frederick House B & B, the American Shakespearean Center (we attended “Anthony and Cleopatra”), and a very small Porsche dealership right in the middle of town—OK, now you know some of our priorities.

The “Escape” was great fun and very well organized with more great Porsche people and beautiful Porsches. A big THANKS to their club and hard-working com-mittee! We took the Civil War Battlefields Tour Friday and then the next day the Naval Academy/Annapolis Tour. (John is a retired Naval Aviator—GO NAVY!) We skipped Sunday’s car show and headed back to the Naval Academy for services. Their pastor just re-turned from a tour in Coronado (San Diego)—it con-tinually seems to be a small world.

LETTER OF “ESCAPE”

Page 12: January 2008 A Newsletter of the Musik-Stadt Porsche Clubmsk.pca.org/newsletters/2008/Jan2008.pdf · 3 Wheels & Keels 9 Rally Tennessee Linden, TN 13 Club Meeting - TBA 17 TN Tubs

On our return trip we mainly drove the back roads—down through the peninsula, past Petersburg and Rich-mond—what a great Porsche drive! We also enjoyed a visit to Fort Southwest Point, outside Kingston, of which Fort Nashborough was an ultimate destination. Throughout the drive we try to connect historical villages and towns—our favorite way to appreciate American history is touring in our Porsche!

We also recently toured the Skyline Drive above the Shenandoah Valley, and the Blue Ridge Parkway; we highly recommend a stay at Otters’ Creek Lodge on

the Parkway. And in August we escaped the heat (& celebrated our 39th Anniversary) with a tour and stay at the Great Smokey Mountains National Park—our dog Klimke loves a road trip, too!(Klimke was named for the late Rinner Klimke, the German Olympic Equestrian Champion who excelled in Dressage and Eventing, by daughter Jill --& mom to our darling grandsons—who also rides beautifully and is a pro-fessional trainer here in Nashville, as she was in San Diego.)

By the way, our 1st Porsche, a 1970 Targa 911, was acquired in ‘70 when John was stationed (“shore duty”) in Italy after his 2 previous tours in Vietnam. (At that time John earned -- aprox-- $7K@ year; I --a D.O.D. elem. teacher in Italy-- $7K@ year; and the Porsche was $7K –yikes.) We drove this Porsche all over Europe: Italy to Stuttgart to Scotland to Spain. We cruised the autostrata and autobahn every week-end and holiday; 100 mph plus was the norm, as was 5 mph behind a donkey cart. We attended the Targa Florio, as well as the races at Monte Carlo, local ski

trips to the Apennines and longer ones to the Alps—that Porsche took snow chains and we just went ev-erywhere. Years later it became our family car, as new babies were first brought home from the hospital in it. It’s been stolen and then recovered by the FBI; it’s been driven hard in Europe and on both American coasts; it’s been –and still is—a member of a loving family. The Targa is now owned by son John, Jr. (35), garaged by him, and with his dreams to follow.

As our pastor preached the other day about loving “things”---well, we don’t love our Porsche, but we do love the special times we share—just the two of us,

with family, and with good friends—the Porsche people.

We look forward to getting to know you -- John and Victoria McMinn
