“Why were you looking for me?”

AS A PARENT, I could definitely identify with Mary and Joseph as they frantically looked

for their Son. When my son, Kenny, was about four years old, I couldn’t find him. The

neighbors helped me look all over the neighborhood for him. When I found him, he was qui-

etly digging in the dirt in a corner of the house next door to us. When, in my relief, I hugged

him and kissed him and cried, he said, “Why are you crying, Mommy? I’m just playing here.”

Jesus basically said the same thing. “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know

that I must be in my Father’s house?” Jesus knew He was doing what Jesus should be doing.

Mary and Joseph searched for Jesus much the same way we search for missing children

today. They checked everyone in the caravan (neighborhood), and then retraced their steps

looking for Him where they had been (the walk from school to home), and then found Him in

Jerusalem (the local woods.) Thankfully He was alive and oblivious to their anxiety.

Mary and Joseph searched for Jesus until they found Him. Do we search for Jesus as dili-

gently? Or do we wait until we think He is lost to us before we begin our search?

We can take active steps to find Jesus. Being in the presence of God through prayer and

meditation, being obedient to God’s Will, and loving one another are ways to seek Jesus. And

be assured, we will always find Him. “Why were you looking for me?” can be different for

each of us. We have choices. The main objective should always be to seek Jesus when we

want to be in God’s presence.

Do you seek Jesus as if He were a lost child, or as if He were your car keys?

This week ask yourself, “why am I looking for Jesus?”

Blessings, Kathie

December 27th—The Holy Family

Today's Gospel gives a hint

that the life of the Holy

Family was not always the

perfect example we might imagine. Tri-

als and struggles were a part of their life

too. As the Gospel story relates today,

Jesus basically skipped out on Mary and

Joseph, not an unusual practice for an

adolescent. But also not the kind of thing

we would typically associate with a well-

behaved teenager. In other words, the

Holy Family is exhibiting the traits and

behaviors that are part of the dynamic of

ordinary family life.

And that is good! It serves as a reminder

to all of us that their example is that of a

family not so different from our own. On

this feast the church lifts up the Holy

Family for us to imitate. The prayer for

the day asks God to help us be like them

"in practicing the virtues of family life

and in the bonds of charity." No matter

the structure of our family household, we

are called to put into practice the eternal

love of God, first revealed in the mystery

of the family of the Trinity, and then

lived out concretely in human life in the

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

It is the bond of charity that holds any

family together, a love that penetrates

deep into our souls and abides in our

hearts no matter the joys or sorrows that

life brings. ©2012 Liturgical Publications Inc
