I JANUARY 1892 SHEVAT 5752 VOLUME 9, NUllER 5 1 FROM RABBI WEBER After the election in Louisiana, many people were euphoric over the defeat of David Duke. Having held our collective breaths for a month preceding the election, there was almost an audible sigh of relief when the results were in. But I see the results differently-very differently.
To me, the election was a w3.ming. Not a dire threat or a call to battle stations, but a warning. For, while David Duke did not become the governor of Louisiana, he did get almost 600,000 votes. Over half a
million people in one stllte voted for an ex-leader of the Ku Klux Klan, and if we do not pay attaltion now, we will have only ourselves to bJame later.
Three kinds of people voted for Duke. The first are those who truly believe he is a changed man, "born again" in his politics as well as in his religion. I have no dispute with these people, even though I think one must be exceptionally naive to believe Duke's claim of having seen the light. Change is possible for everyone-I just don't believe it occurred in this case. For those who do, however, we can agree to disagree.
The second kind of people who voted for Duke are his old KKK. and Nazi friends, who are tick1ed pink to see him wrapping his Klan sheet in a" suit and tie. They are amazed at how a little plastic surgery and careful editing of his old speeches have launched him into the arena of respectability, and those with more than a third-grade education are probably kicking themselves for not thinking of it sooner. These folks and I have very little in common; I dislike them as much as they dislike me, but I am not as scared of them as
they would wish. Duke is their man-literally.
The third kind is the group that does scare me. It is the group that nearly got Duke ck:ctcd. It constitutes the majority of the 600,000 voters and the majority of his contributors, both in and out of Louisiana. This group consists of people who are scared of the world that confronts them, and who are looking for an answer to the question, "why aren't things happening the way I expected them to happen'?" The rr:aJ answer to their question is, "because life never happens the way we expect"; David Duke's answer is, "because other people took away what is rightfully yours." They like Duke's answer better.
A lot has been written recently about "decoding" Duke's message. Editorials have noted that "welfare reform" means anti-black legislation, "American pride" means expelling the foreigners, and so on. But let's not forget the one that is seldom mentioned: "family values"-that all-American phrase, as wholesome as
mom and apple pio--means, in reality, Cbristianvalues. That includes prayer-Olristian prayer-and Bible study in public school. It includes a fundamentalist view of women's rights, birth control and abortion as
the future legal standard for the country. And without a doubt, it includes a consideration of any candi-

date's allegiance to these "family values" as a prerequisite for election. In Duke's world, Jews need not apply.
Yes, I am scared. By himself, David Duke means nothing. But with over half a million supporters in just one state, we Jews cannot afford DOt to be scaredr not to respond. As Jews living in the shadow of the Holocaust, we know that "it can't happen here" is the last cry of a doomed people. And we know the only way to make sure it doesn't happen here is to respond with every tool and weapon available, and to do so
DOW. Tomorrow won't be too late, but the day after tomorrow may be.
We must respond in several ways. First, we must respond politically. If you are not a supporter of the ADL, the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, become one. The ADL is the most prominent Jewish organization which speaks out against lies and misinformation about Jews, and which takes on all comers, regardless of their strength or position. Add your strength to theirs. N ow.
Also, join the American Civil liberties Union (yes, the infamous ACLU1). They have not always said what Jews want to hear (including their defense of the American Nazi Party's right to march through Skokie, Dlinois, some years ago), but they have always spoken out for freedom. As Jews, we must understand the words of our prayerbook: "Only when all are free, can we be free." The ACLU is a good organization, and we need it as much as it needs us. Now.
As a last political response, it is time we Jews began to vote as JC"iIVS. For some time, we have voted our pocketbooks and even our prejudices, but David Duke proves that that time has ended. If a candidate kisses up to the radical right, it can no longer matter how nicely they speak to us: they are threatening our lives and our future in the United States. When candidates speak to religious groups--especially the
" fundamentalist organintions which walk a fme line between religion and politics-6stm to what they say! If you hear them commit themselves to working for "common goals," for a "return to Am.erica.'s religious tradition," and yes, for "family values," understand that they are speaking of a country which will have no use for non-believers. And in their eyes, we am DOD-bt:lieYeTS. We must start voting for candidates whose vision of America. includes us in it. Now.
Another way we must respond is personally. This may take some adjustment in attitude, but it is our duty to have a valid passport for ourselves and for every member of our family. I am most certainly not planning on leaving the United States, and I do not believe we are even near the day when we must consider leaving, but still, the possibility exists. Every Jew living after the Holocaust must recognize that we have a responsibility to the future and to history to continue Judaism and the Jewish people. Personally, I would rather live somewhere else than die here. A passport is an innocent document; obtaining one is not a sign of disloyalty. But without it, we cannot lcavc--even to go to Israel. A Jew who cannot leave is a prisoner, even if the prison is very comfortable. Rmlmlber, the story of our people's enslavement in Egypt begins with our ancestors living very well there, until "there arose a new king who knew not Joseph .. . " Get a passport. Now.
Our personal response must include the willingness to speak out. Remember the "Moral Majority"? The very name told the world that if you do not believe as the group dictates, you are not moral. lhat was nonsense, but only a few JC"iIVS openly challenged Reverend Falwell and his political fundamentalists. We no longer have that luxury of sitting back and hoping they will go away: as Duke is now proving, his kind is not going to go away. When he, or anyone like him, says things that are biased, discriminatory or just

plain false about Jews, or blacks, or Hispanics, or homosexuals, or any group which docs not m= their "true American" test-we must stand up and call him or her a bigot, a racist or a liar. Doing 10 will involve some risk. But not doing so is simply dangerous. In the 1920's, Germans thought Hitler would go away, or that no one would really listen to him. We have learned that people do listen to those who preach hate, 10 they had better hear our response, too. Now.
Fmally, there is one other institution which stands up for Jews and Ju and which bas always been the first target when hatred strikes. It, too, needs your help and your support. It needs your ideas, your voice, your participation and your contributions to make it grow. It represents the very best of the Jewish way of life, and the very best of what we offer to the United States and to the world. It is the teacher of Jewish values and Jewish ideals, the strongest weapons against those who would debase us. This powerful organization is the temple-Temple Rodeph Torah and every other temple in the country. We are more than just a religious school for your children: we are the foundation of Jewish life in the United States. If you have never really thought of the temple as preserving your right to live freely in this country, it is time to re-think your beliefs. Now.
The ideas I put forward in this column are not a menu of actions we might choose from. I believe each of us must do all of tbt:se to secure and guarantee our freedom in the years ahead. Just as we have watched the faD. of the U.S.S.R. in front of our very eyes, there is no guarantee that the United States must remain as it is now. Remember: '7he only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men [and, I may add, women] to do nothing."
It is time to do something. Now.
Shalom,
Rabbi Don Weber
P.S. This is the longest article I have ever written for this Newsletter, and perhaps the most controversial. I would appreciate hearing your responses, pro and con. If you respond in writing, we will publish it in a future issue of this Newsletter. While we will publish it without your name if you request, only signed responses will be considered. Please let me know what you think!

I PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I We oftat speak about our congregation as ·our c:xtcnded family." I know that I have used the term several times in speaking to various groups of people. You hear the term used in ahnost every ICIltcnce at open house for new members. The Rabbi uses the term at Shabbat services and with our children in religious lChooL But what does ·our c:xtended family" really mean? What are the benefits of belonging to this group? What are the obligations of belonging to this group?
Somehow, almost 300 families have been drawn to Temple Rodeph Torah. Each of us has our own reason for belonging. Some of us belong for our children and want no other part of the congregation. Others have become involved in one of the many committees. Others seem to spmd more time at Mohawk Drive than at home. But each of us belongs. Each of us is getting something in return for the fees we pay and the involvement we put in. But this doesn't make a family. Belonging is not enough. To be a family, you have to care about each other.
When this congregation was smaller, about half the size we are today, we were kept informed as to the welfare of its members through telephone calls and notices placed on a bulletin board. When a mc:m.ber was in the hospital or there was a death in a member's family, the congregation was informed. A family that cares is there to help a member who needs a visit, a cheerful conversation on the phone, or a card or brief note to just let you know that we are there.
We have grown quickly since then. We have tried to stay a family, but it has become much more diflicult. There is a committee cba.ircd by Alicia Quint which is quietly trying to perform some of our family obligations. That's great. But what I want to see is a committee that keeps the other members informed as to the illnesses, the celebrations, and the deaths of our family so we can all participate in our obligation of one family member to another.
This is the only way we are going to keep that family feeling, the closeness that many of us have felt and don't want to lose. Anyone wishing to help me accomplish this goa.1-please call me at home (780-6763). I will appreciate all the help I can get.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL I From October 31 through November 4, I attalded the annual National Association of Tcmple Educators' (NATE) Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. NATE is a professional organization of over 750 people from Canada, England, Israel, Australia and the United States who are the educators, principals, rabbis, and cantors responsible for providing the leadership in religious education for congregations affiliated with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.
For the first time in NATE's history, the conference ran concurrently with the UAHC Biennial Convention. Jews; to see and hear 4,000 people sway from right to left as they prayed for peace, was a light I will never forget.
The CODf'ereoce highlights included workshops facilitated by prominent leaders in the Reform Mowmmt: Rabbi Norman Cohen on -Abraham through the prism of Midraah," Rabbi Brie H. YoffJe on -Is there a cbance for Peace in the Middle East?" Also, addressing the needs of religious Icllool children with non-Jewish relatives, and how to create a staff of master tat.chers were just a few of the programs.
It was an important conference, and I would like to thank the congregation for making it possible for me to attend, grow and learn.
Report cards will be distributed the week of January 26. Please go over them with your child, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to call the religious school offx:e. This marking period ends the fD'St sancster; if your child has not pcrforIned as helshe could, it is not too late. I will be happy to make recommendations to you.
I would like to congratulate Halina Reed from our Kindergarten class and Shelby Ebert, Fourth Grade, for winning the naming contest for the religious school newspaper: Tbe Roaring TrtJe. The name is a combined idea of the two entries:

I SOCIAL JUSTICE I In January 1992, the Social Justice Committee is excited to be launching a new program in conjunction with the religious school, designed to provide a continuous collection of food for diatribution by local food pantries. Each month different grades in the religious school will be asked to contnbute basic food supplies to the IIJ400d Baskets" which will be provided by the Social Justice Committee. In addition, the religious school faculty will be making a presentation to their students providing facts on hunger and poverty in our community, in our country and in the world, and how we can all work to alleviate hunger. We ask that all

parents of religious school students also discuss these important issues with their children and help their children participate in this program by purchasing items for than to contnDute when it is their month. Perhaps parents can even take their clilldren with than to the supermarket to pick out the food donations. Of course, food supplies can be given at any time of the year, not just in the month in which a raigious school child is asked to participate. Also, we remind all mcmben of our congregation to please bring an item of food to the food pantry basket located in the atrium lobby whenever they come to the Temple.
The Social Justice Committee is aware that in the current economic climate many demands and requests are placed upon all of us by many cllarities and that, in particular, the need to feed the hungry, even in our local community, is one of which we are now all keenly aware. However, even in the best economic times there are still hungry people in our community. It is our intention that this becomes a permanent project, and that the enthusiasm. which we are certain all of you will show for this project will last even when this current recession is history.
