Diabetic Feet: Handle with CareDiabetics have many health concerns. Among them is the need to pay greater attention to their feet. Because feet are a great distance from the heart, poor blood circulation and nerve impairment often cause diabetic feet to be at risk. A regular program of hygiene, common sense and periodic foot examinations by a podiatric physician can help keep diabetics on their feet and walking. Feet with poor circulation have a harder time fighting infection & healing injuries. Complications from even minor bruises can result in serious ulcerations or even amputation.Numbness, tingling, cold feet or a bluish discoloration are symptoms of circulatory problems. When nerves are impaired, injuries can occur without one’s knowledge, such as a burn from bath water that is too hot.A program of daily foot hygiene and regular inspection are essential to good foot health. Avoidance of activities which restrict circulation such as crossing one’s legs, wearing tight stockings or garters or exposing one’s feet to cold temperatures is important.Smoking tobacco must be avoided at all costs. To schedule an evaluation with one of the podiatric physicians at the Connecticut Foot Care Centers call the location most convenient for you. Remember to take care of your feet. Did you know? A new study in the journal Neurology suggests that working out is the most effective way to protect the brain from Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers studied roughly 700 study participants from Scotland, all of whom were born in 1936. Each participant reported their levels of leisure and physical activity at age 70, rating their physical activ-ity on a scale from moving only to perform household chores to participating in heavy exercise or competitive sport several times per week. Participants were also asked to rate how often they engaged in social or intellectual activities. At age 73, participants received an MRI to measure certain biomarkers in their brains. Those who participated in more physical activity showed less brain shrinkage and fewer white matter lesions, both of which can be signs of Alzheimer’s disease. And while social and intellectual activities can be beneficial in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, the study found that social and intellectual engagement weren’t as helpful to the brain as physical exercise. The types of physical exercise most beneficial to the brain are still being studied, though information presented at the 2012 Alzheimer’s Association’s International Conference suggested that strength training is perhaps the most effective form of exercise.

The Dec. 14 Newtown shooting tragedy brought school safety into the spotlight, as a recent $100 million lawsuit pursued by a New Haven attorney against the state of Connecticut has illustrated, but as schools throughout the state begin re-examining their policies, in Newington it’s just business as usual.

“We’ve actually had a pretty stringent safety protocol in place probably for six or seven years now,” said Newing-ton Superintendent of Schools William Collins.

While the district is discussing the implementation of additional measures, the existing protocol includes security cameras connected to a monitoring system at the Newing-ton Police Department, an I.D. system, and constant com-munication with local police, according to Collins.

“The police can tap into our surveillance system in a second and see what’s going on,” Collins said.

At the middle school and grade school levels, only fac-ulty and visitors have to wear a color code lanyard identi-fication card around the building. At the high school, how-ever, students are required to wear the I.D.s as well.

“If you have to make a call on who should be there and who shouldn’t be, it’s easy to figure out who shouldn’t be,” Collins said.

Newington schools are also connected to the police de-partment’s radio system, so that authorities can be reached at a moment’s notice should an emergency arise, Collins said.

“You don’t even have to dial 911,” he said. “We go right into the police radio system.”

Irving Pinksy is the New Haven lawyer that filed a re-quest for permission to sue the state on behalf of a six-year-old Sandy Hook Elementary School student for a potential $100 million in damages. His argument was that the state failed to protect students from what he sees as “foreseeable danger.”

In Newtown, security protocols kept shooter Adam Lanza from entering through the school’s doors as normal--he shot his way in--but the state should have provided for bullet proof glass, Pinksy said, citing incidents such as Col-umbine and Virginia Tech as adequate warnings.

“After countless other attacks in schools, it’s foresee-able now,” Pinksy said. “My question is now, how do we prevent it from happening?”

Pinksy has taken his share of flak for the case--so much so, that he actually opted to withdraw his request, at least for now, anyway. He has a year to file it, he said.

“My goal is to make the country safer, not to scare people,” Pinksy said.

Whether or not the state can or should be held respon-sible, efforts are being beefed up at the local levels. Mea-sures such as those being taken in Newington are a good start, Pinsky said.

While the incident in Newtown may have shocked oth-er districts into evaluating their security protocols, New-ington’s system is a result of its own scare back in 2005, when a student was arrested after authorities found weap-ons at his home. Police were sent to the residence due to comments that were made via social media, Collins said.

“We don’t know if anything would have happened, but we take it very seriously,” Collins said.

Newington takes it so seriously, in fact, that SWAT teams drill at the high school building on weekends. The outside walls of the school are marked with room numbers so that sharp shooters can quickly identify a location during an emergency.

“We’ve actually done drills inside, where they’ve had to identify a classroom quickly,” Collins said. “You drill, and drill, and hope that the day never comes.”

Toll Bros. Endangered Tree Issue Not Resolvedby Mark DiPaola

The Newington Conservation Commission is running out of time for determining whether or not to allow Toll Brothers to develop the hotly contested Cedar Mountain, and questions remain.

The Commission, as well as the residents that continue to attend the hearings, is no closer to a definitive conclusion as to the danger the project may pose to the Swamp Cot-tonwood, an endangered tree species reported by George Logan of REMA, the independent consultant brought in to work with Toll Brothers’ team of experts, two hearing ses-sions ago.

Last time REMA told the Commission that the greatest risk posed to the Swamp Cottonwood is the growth of new trees, since the species cannot be shaded. The environment at Cedar Mountain accommodates these needs--for now--but Logan has yet to determine what impact construction at the site might have.

“Both the hydrology and the chemistry of the water is essential to preserving this population,” Logan said. “We’re concerned about it, and what we’ve asked the applicant to do is provide what can be happening post-development.”

Whether or not construction at the site will change the chemistry and hydrology to the detriment of the cottonwood has yet to be seen, but Logan’s statements regarding the current conditions contradicted the presentation from Russ Abrams of Dru Associates.

Cedar Mountain is experiencing the natural regrowth of forest that was cleared in the 1930s, according to Abrams.

This, given the inevitable shading that will occur, puts the Cottonwood at risk, he said.

“Please understand the Cottonwood shouldn’t be there,” Abrams said. “The reason it’s endangered is because it’s at the very northern region of its geographic range.”

Abrams cited a Connecticut Department of Protection letter advising that the removal of certain trees in the area would be required in order to protect the species.

“The Swamp Cottonwood isn’t going to last if you don’t do something with it,” Abrams said.

Another issue, which Logan raised at the last hearing session, is the composition of the middle of Wetland 2, the focal point of the Cedar Mountain development discussion. Logan and Dru Associates, Toll Brothers’ consultant on the project, both determined that the outside of the wetland is made up of a “confining” clay layer, but have varying theo-ries as to the texture once it slopes down into the center. Logan suspects that the confining layer is extremely thin, or non-existent.

“I don’t think it’s there, but I need to test it,” Logan said outside of the hearing room following his presentation.

Permeability, or lack thereof, can create problems for the Cottonwood, Logan said. He referred to the potential of hazardous “inputs,” or minerals from ground water that can pass through soil and into wetlands. Consultants from Dru have asserted that Wetland 2 is not in any way fed by ground water, but Logan has said that this has yet to be determined for sure.

The areas’ dryness during periods lacking rain or snow melt precipitation is evidence that there is no ground water

influence, consultants from Dru have said. But this claim has been disputed by the Newington and Wethersfield resi-dents fighting to stonewall the proposed project.

Newington resident John Bachand pointed to another piece known as Wetland 1.

“Only under the most extreme conditions did Wetland 1 dry out,” Bachand said. “I do believe there’s a strong ground water element on this mountain.”

Throughout the course of Tuesday night’s continuation of the ongoing hearing, the residents filling the audience fidgeted restlessly, waiting to have their say, as Toll Broth-ers went through an assembly line of consultants, each of which argued the case for the project while trying to assure the Commission that Cedar Mountain’s wildlife, as well the Russell Road homes and wetlands in Wethersfield, would be safe from blasting and construction site runoff.

“Although they say there is no direct impact to that area, there’s potential for indirect impact caused by the con-struction site and change of hydrology,” said Newington resident Allison Clark during the public comment segment.

Residents have also been unhappy with Toll Brothers’ failure to report the presence of the Swamp Cottonwood, which has not helped to reverse the general sentiment of mistrust hearing attendees have toward the developer.

“How can you approve this application when they did not report the Swamp Cottonwood to us?” Clark asked the Commission. “Was it neglect, or oversight? Which is worse?”

Schools to Discuss Additional Safety Measures

The Polish Cultural Club of Greater Hartford, Inc. donated a 2011 edition of the Polish American Encyclopedia to the Lucy Robbins Welles Library in Newington. Clifford and Pat Archie and Carol Phelan presented Library Di-rector Donna Miller with this reference source that promotes the preservation of Polish history and culture. Copies of the encyclopedia were donated to six Connecticut towns where most members of the club live: Newington, New Britain, West Hartford, East Hartford, Rocky Hill and Hartford. The mission of the club is to keep Polish heritage alive and strong among the younger generations. The encyclopedia will be placed in the library’s reference collection for use within the library.

A group of residents at Morrison Avenue is calling for a second stop sign where the road intersects with Orchard Street.

The absence of a stop sign on Morrison Avenue for cars going eastbound presents a significant safety risk, say pro-ponents of such a measure. There is a stop sign for traffic going westbound from the Silas Deane Highway.

“The people coming off Tifton don’t have enough time if a car is coming from the eastbound direction,” said Mor-rison Avenue resident Gus Colantonio. “It’s not safe.”

Colantonio, who frequently argues his case at Town Council meetings, is leading the push.

“There’s about 45 kids that cross Morrison Avenue [go-ing to school every morning],” Colantonio said. “I’m afraid that somebody is going to get killed.”

His argument is that Morrison Avenue was not meant to receive through traffic from the busy Silas Deane High-way when it was originally constructed. Colantonio points to Hillcrest Avenue, which runs parallel to Morrison Ave.

A 2007 police traffic study reported an average daily traffic count of 441 cars for Hillcrest. Monitoring of Morrison Ave. over the course of one 24-hour period saw 730 vehicles pass through.

The residents have been waiting for an additional stop sign at the intersection of Orchard Street since 2006, and they may be waiting a lot longer.

That’s because the Wethersfield Police Department can’t put another one there--even if it wanted to. State guidelines, which align with Federal traffic control regula-tions, can put a stop on stop signs. A set of specific standards dictates the conditions under which one can be erected, ac-cording to Lieutenant Andrew Power of the Wethersfield Police Department.

“The biggest mistake towns make is they put up stop signs that are very difficult to enforce, so if a stop sign were up there, Gus would be sure to call and say people are blow-ing it,” Power said.

One of the complaints surrounding the issue is the speed that made up the 85th percentile of the traffic study--cars in that category were going 31 mph or less. The speed

limit on Morrison Avenue is 25 mph.“One of the things it prohibits is putting up a stop sign

for speed,” Power said. The traffic volume argument, in this case, does not hold

up either, Power said. The conditions outlined by the Fed-eral government stipulate that a minimum of 300 cars must pass through a major street per hour for an eight-hour period for a stop sign to be permissible. For minor streets, it’s 200.

A more recent 2012 study of Morrison Ave reported an average amount of 33 vehicles per hour at the highest, Power said.

Under the guidelines, the intersection would have to see five accidents that could have been prevented by a stop sign within any 12-month period to warrant the need for a stop sign, according to Power.

“If a guy pulls out of his driveway and hits a parked car, that doesn’t count,” Power said.

The intersection at Orchard and Morrison Avenue has not seen any accidents, according to Power.

Residents Ask for Stop Sign on Morrison Avenue

Have you checked your house for radon yet? By winter-izing our houses, we decrease ventilation and indoor air qual-ity becomes a concern, particularly with regard to radon. The United States Environmental Protection Agency and state and local health departments recognize the month of January as Radon Awareness Month.

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas found in the soil that results from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. While harmless outdoors, the concen-tration of this gas can build to unhealthy levels in buildings, especially in cold weather when structures are sealed up and winterized. Long-term exposure to high levels of radon can lead to lung cancer.

Radon is measured in units called picocuries per liter. The EPA, while acknowledging that any exposure to radon is potentially dangerous, recommends that action be taken to reduce the level of radon whenever a test results in a finding of four picocuries per liter or more. Such action may be simple and inexpensive, such as sealing cracks and holes in the foun-dation, increasing ventilation by opening windows, vents, or doors, and covering exposed earth in the basement sump or

crawl space. More expensive and complicated remedies may be necessary if the other methods do not sufficiently reduce the level of radon. These include providing alternative air supplies for furnaces, fire places, and clothes dryers, and sub-slab ventilation.

The only way to know if a home has excessive radon is to test, using an inexpensive and easy testing method. The Central Connecticut Health District sells radon test kits for $8. The kit includes the test, instructions, laboratory analysis, and postage, and results are sent directly to the person submit-ting the test for analysis. The Health District also has literature about radon available at no cost.

Additional information about radon is available by con-tacting the Environmental Protection Agency at www.epa.gov/radon and the American Lung Association at www.lun-gusa.org. For a list of companies that provide commercial testing and mitigation services, visit the Con-necticut Department of Public Health’s web site at www.dph.state.ct.us.

What’s Happening

Rocky Hill & Cromwell?

by Katelyn Kelleher

The student body at Cromwell Middle School erupted in cheer when Miss Teen USA, Logan West, walked into the gymnasium Thursday, Jan. 10, but soon she revealed she wasn’t always so accepted.

As part of its anti-bullying initia-tive, Cromwell Middle School invited West, 18, a Southington native, to speak to the students of her experi-ence with bullying starting at age 12 and how she took a stand against it.

After answering questions about her journey to becoming a pageant queen, West asked the students to de-fine bullying and why it occurs. Their consensus was simple: treating some-one badly because they are different.

Through her BullyProof” pro-gram, West taught the students the effects of bullying and how everyone can prevent it. Student volunteers spelled out the word “RESPECT” as West explained guidelines using each letter to show how the students should treat their peers with respect.

Cromwell Middle School was selected in 2010 as one of the first schools in the state to implement the Olweus Bullying Prevention Pro-gram, teaching students bullying prevention strategies and uniting the school, home and local communities in an effort to prevent bullying.

Miss Teen USA Logan West speaks to Cromwell Middle School students about bullying prevention tactics.

prize in Musical Club of Hartford competition

A Cromwell High School senior has won third prize in the winds division of the 37th high school competition sponsored by The Musical Club of Hartford, for students living or studying in Connecticut.

Sarah Mosure, a trombone player, performs with the Crom-well High School concert and jazz bands, as well as the pit or-chestra. She is the principal trombone of the Connecticut Youth Symphony, and also participated in the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble.

Held on Jan. 5 and 6, the competition awarded a total of $4,000 in scholarship prizes to performers in the piano, strings, vocal and woodwinds divisions. The piano competition prize is funded by the Evelyn Bonar Storrs Fund for advanced piano stu-dents; prizes for the winds, strings and voice competitions come from the Musical Club Gifts and Scholarships Fund.

Mosure has participated in the Connecticut Music Educa-tors Northern Region Orchestra for High School and Middle School, as well as the Connecticut All State and All New Eng-land orchestras. For a complete list of winners and other infor-mation please see www.musical-club-of-hartford.org.

The winners will give a free concert Jan. 20, at 2 p.m., at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard, West Hart-ford. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Carpino Appointed to Three CommitteesState Rep. Christie Carpino,

representing Cromwell and Port-land, was appointed to three com-mittees for the new legislative term beginning January 9th. Car-pino will be the top House Repub-lican on the Legislative Program Review and Investigations Com-mittee and also serve on the Judi-ciary and Education committees.

“I know Christie will con-tinue to serve the House Repub-lican caucus with distinction. She has a keen eye for details and is a dedicated legislator,” said State Rep. Larry Cafero, House Repub-lican Leader. “We all rely on our key committee members to be our strongest advocates, our eyes and ears, when it comes to shaping critical legislation.”

Carpino is anxious to con-tinue working for the people of Cromwell and Portland at a time when the state faces significant challenges--namely, problems

with its books.Carpino’s role on the Judi-

ciary Committee will see her con-sider judicial procedures, criminal law, probate courts, probation, parole, wills, estates, adoption, divorce, bankruptcy, all bills car-rying civil penalties which ex-ceed $5,000, and all bills carrying criminal penalties, other than in-fractions.

“I am pleased with these as-signments,” Carpino said. “Crime and public safety are on the foremost minds of Connecticut residents. One of our top priori-ties is to make sure we do every-thing feasible to protect our citi-zens.”

Carpino supported a biparti-san solution during a recent spe-cial session to closed a projected $250 million deficit for this fiscal year. Analysts project Connecticut will face deficits of $1 billion in each of the next two fiscal years.

Tackling those budget problems will begin next month.

The Legislative Program Re-view and Investigations Commit-tee’s primary charge is to examine state government programs, and their administration, to determine whether they are run in an effec-tive and efficient manner. Carpino said she hopes to steer this com-mittee towards comprehensive solutions.

Carpino is particularly pleased to be re-appointed to the Education Committee. She will continue to fight for the best edu-cation for Connecticut’s children. “Our students’ successes are criti-cal to Connecticut’s future,” she said.

“Committee rooms are where the laws of our state are shaped, and where we can make the most difference for the people of the state of Connecticut,” Cafero said.

Wethersfield Academy for the ArtsWinter 2013 Lecture Series, Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m.Jan. 23, The Art of Light in the Golden Age of Dutch Paint-ing, with University of Hartford art history professor Alexandra Onuf. The great artists of 17th century Holland painted all sorts of different subjects and themes, but they had one thing in com-mon: their fascination with depicting light. Dutch artists were masters of illumination and, through light, of color, textures and the illusion of space. This lecture will explore the many ways northern artists harnessed light n paint and the subtle, of-ten mysterious, qualities of their luminous pictures.Feb. 6, The Collectible Art Pastel, with workshop instructor Liz Sullivan-Haywood. In the past 20 years or so, there has been a renaissance in the artistic medium of pastel. This has been driven by advances in the actual medium, the substrates upon which pastels are painted, and improved framing techniques to preserve the final art. This hour-long lecture will cover these topics in more depth, revealing why more artists and collectors than ever before are discovering pastel as a desirable painting and collecting medium.1/17/13

Box Tops for EducationThe PTO Box Tops for Education coordinators for Myrtle H. Stevens and West Hill Elementary schools are collaborating to-gether to try and improve community involvement with earning free money for our schools. We do a great job with collecting within the schools and we are now hoping to expand our col-lections by informing town residents about this great program. In addition we would like them to know that we have recently placed some collection boxes at some prime locations here in town (at the senior center; at the Library on the information wall; at West Side market near the front windows by the reg-isters). We also continue to have a collection box at the Parks & Rec counter. Passing Box Top coupons onto a neighborhood child works as well. 11/15/12

fire is a powerful and destructive force that most of us don’t understand, but think we can survive. Most home fire fatalities are caused by carelessness with cigarettes. If you have smokers in your home, make sure that there are large ashtrays for their use. Home heating is also a major cause of home fires. It is impor-tant that you have your heating system inspected annu-ally. To keep the kitchen safe, make sure areas around the stove are kept free of grease buildup. If you have a fire on the stove, put a lid on it. For a home inspection checklist on home fire safety, contact the Rocky Hill Fire Department.

14 sTiCKs of dynaMiTe! Did you know that a gallon of gasoline can be as dangerous as 14 sticks of dyna-mite? There are all types of flammable liquids that we keep around our homes. If they are stored and used properly, accidents can be avoided. Keep gasoline and kerosene stored outside the house away from sources of ignition. Use solvents designed for cleaning, instead of gasoline, & when refueling any small engine, turn it off, allow to cool & extinguish all smoking materials.

Business SpotlightTimeless Trendz Consignment

by Katelyn Kelleher

With Timeless Trendz Consignments marking one year in business Jan. 9, co-owner Kim Bertucio just celebrated the first anniver-sary of achieving a lifelong dream.

“I’ve always wanted to open this type of store. I flea market, I tag sale, I consign-ment shop; it’s just a passion of mine, so I thought why not take the passion, some-

thing I love, and open my own store,” she said.

Bertucio’s friend Me-lissa Rogozinski joined her in the business venture as co-owner.

Both Cromwell resi-dents, Bertucio and Rogoz-inski decided to open the consignment store in Mid-dletown, as it would be the only of its kind in the area. The Saybrook Road shop is now filled with handbags, women’s and teenage cloth-

ing, shoes, h o u s e -wares, toys, small fur-niture, col-l e c t i b l e s , a n t i q u e s , art and vin-tage and c o s t u m e jewelry.

“It’s a little mish-mash of ev-erything,” B e r t u c i o said. The store car-ries all siz-es, includ-ing small petite and plus size collections.

“A lot of items are

one of a kind,” Bertucio said, adding customers have come in and found vintage items “that they haven’t seen in years but were look-ing for.”

Shoppers can find a deal at Timeless Trendz, where nothing sits on the shelf too long. After a month, items are reduced in price. After 60 days, the items are donat-ed to charity if consigners haven’t picked them up. To ensure clothing isn’t sitting around, collecting dust, sea-sonal clothing is accepted during certain dates. Spring clothing is taken Feb. 15- April 30; summer clothing from May 15-July 31; fall clothing from Aug. 15-Oct. 31; and winter clothing from Nov. 15- Jan. 31.

There are even a few dollar racks with clothing, handbags and accessories, and a “feature of the week” discounts certain items even more. Through Saturday, all winter outerwear is 20 per-cent off.

“Our prices are hon-estly the best, and I’m a bargain shopper,” Bertu-cio said, adding even other business owners will shop at Timeless Trendz for their own stores.

It’s a good deal for con-signers, too, who receive

50 percent of the sale price, whereas many consignment stores off 40 percent.

The store currently does not accept men’s or children’s clothing, bed-ding, curtains and books.

After the pay out, many consigners see something that catches their eye.

“A lot of times what happens is they’ll sell stuff and they’ll re-spend that money in the store,” Bertu-cio said. Some sellers leave it as store credit. “They let their money sit and they just use it like a shopping spree.”

Apart from the always-changing se-lection, shop-pers and sellers quickly get to know Bertucio and Rogozin-ski. Even with almost 500 consigners cur-rently, “It’s a big deal to me to try to know e v e r y o n e ’ s name,” Bertu-cio said.

Ti m e l e s s Trendz Con-signments, 749 Saybrook Rd., Middletown,

can be reached at 860-344-1707, www.timelesstren-

dzct.com, or www.face-book.com/timelesstrendzct.

The collection of handbags takes up an entire wall of the store.

Timeless Trendz is filled with unique finds for the closet and home.

Items nearing their 60-day deadline before going to donation are marked down to $1.

Fees for mediation generally run between $1,600 and $2,500, which include multiple sessions with the attorney drafting, the divorce agreement and all other necessary documents. The attorney would also appear on the final court date. The initial half hour consultation is at no charge. Joseph J. Shainess, Attorney & Counselor At Law, 547 Main Street, Middletown. 860-346-0100.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE is defined as readings of 140/90 mmHg or greater that stay high over an extend-ed time. High blood pressure is the major risk factor for stroke and also increases your risk of heart and kidney desease. If you have high blood pressure, work with your doctor to treat it. Also limit your intake of sodium to 2400 mg. per day and alcohol to one drink a day, control your weight and be physically active.

EAT a well-balanced diet that’s low in cholesterol and saturated fats and moderate in sodium (salt). A diet high in saturated fats and cholesterol can contribute to arteriosclerosis, a major contributor to heart disease and stroke.

She needs to be the only pet in a quiet home. She needs scratching posts and would love someone who is home a majority of the time. She loves constant attention, is very antsy and needs a home desper-ately. Please contact CATALES at 860-344-9043 or [email protected].

Choose the Best Food for Your Dog Being a dog owner is a big job, and ensuring that your dog receives the correct nutrition is a key part of that job. Here are three quick and easy tips that will help you make the best choice for your pet while they savor their mealtime with you even more:1. Shop in a specialty pet store that sells premi-um quality food. Many commercially available/economy brands of dog food are made from in-expensive ingredients, which might not be easily digested due to possible degradation of protein sources or oxidization of fat sources. While the ingredients may technically meet the legal speci-fications for percentages of protein, fat, carbohy-drates, etc., these foods have lower energy values and lower-grade proteins and don’t provide the same quality nutrition.2. Look at the ingredient panel.

• Look for a species-specific meat as the first ingredient (e.g. “chicken” not “poultry”). Keep away from anything listed as by-products or meat meal.• Ensure that the product is naturally pre-served with vitamin E (you don’t want any chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT or ethoxyquin listed). Also, no artificial colors are necessary for a dog.• Look for the “extras” (like pre- and probi-otics, digestive enzymes and antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables).

3. Consider your dog’s activity level, weight and any specific health needs. Many “all life stage” products exist. However, some manufacturers also include life-stage-specific foods that have unique features and benefits tailored to a puppy or a senior dog. Also, there are many breed-size specific diets and diets that are specifically tailored to unique health needs, such as allergies, mobility issues or weight man-agement.A store expert can help you by asking some specific questions about your pet.

What to look for in a graduate program

Today’s college graduates are facing a difficult job market, one that is flooded with unemployed pro-fessionals but few job openings. As a result, many college juniors, seniors and even recent graduates are considering the possibility of the pursuit of an advanced degree. When researching different gradu-ate programs, prospective applicants should take the following under consideration.

> Admission standards. Applicants should be looking for schools with tough admissions standards. Schools with low admissions standards won’t necessarily pro-vide a degree that’s valued by prospective employers. Since many students will be pursuing an advanced degree in the hopes it will help them stand out in a crowded pool of applicants, that advanced degree should be one that has substantial value and not one that was easy to pursue and obtain.

> Assistance. A good graduate program will boast a career development program that helps place gradu-ates in desirable careers. Ask about past graduates of the program, and where they are currently working and what they’re earning.

> Faculty. When researching graduate programs, look for one whose faculty are well known in your desired field. Most school Web sites list faculty biographies. A strong faculty is one that has a history of scholarly publications, acclaim among colleagues and profes-sional experience not just in academia, but in the desired field as well. A proven and respected faculty can be a great way for students to make connections in the field.

The Wethersfield High School girls’ basketball team’s first half scoring woes left them on the short end of a 54-40 contest against Manchester High School (3-8) on Friday night at home.

Persistent full court pressure from the Indians hindered the Eagles’ transition play, preventing them from establish-ing an offensive flow throughout the course of the game.

“Manchester always plays a kind of defense that makes it look like there’s six out on the floor,” said Eagles head

coach Michelle Libby after the game. “Which makes it dif-ficult to run your sets and find the areas you’re looking for.”

When the Eagles did find their way to the basket, In-dians pressure all the way to the rim saw them fail to con-vert scoring opportunities. Manchester led by more than 10 points for most of the game, with Wethersfield generating short spurts of momentum that would get squashed with a turnover or Indian basket. The Eagles left the half down 29-16.

“I think we started off a little slow,” Libby said. A Wethersfield second half surge saw a mix of con-

tributors, with junior Brittany Dalkowski and senior captain Sara Hubbard--each with seven points--leading an effort that would cut the deficit, at one point, to nine.

The Eagles generated some turnovers of their own, and dominated the boards in the third and fourth quarter, but continued to struggle with their finishing.

“Our intensity in the second half-our effort was there,” Libby said. “But ultimately that’s got to be there for four quarters.”

The Eagles (3-8) face a 7-1 East Hartford team at home on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Although the Rocky Hill High School boys swimming and diving team com-petes in its conference against much larger schools, the team is strong and has its share of standout swimmers.

“In swimming, it’s not like a soccer team. For us it’s really about seeing how many boys we can get to qualify for the state championships,” said coach Lisa Cooney. Rocky Hill is the only Class S school in the CCC East League, Cooney said, competing against Class M and L schools, so the Terri-ers focus on individual performances.

Last Tuesday, Jan. 8, for example, the team competed against East Catholic.

“We won more races than East Catho-lic but they won the meet because we just don’t have the depth,” she said. “It’s all about individual. Almost everybody on the team has gotten an individual best in some-thing they swam. We’re just looking to be better at the end of the season than they were in the beginning.”

Junior Jack Malestini is one of the team’s top individual performers in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle and has been un-defeated this season so far in the 100 free.

“He’s somebody I’m expecting to place in the top three at states,” Cooney said, adding his best time this season ranks him in the top two in the Class S division.

Malestini, who hadn’t swum before joining the team as a freshman, finished sixth in the state last year as a sophomore. The top five were seniors. Cooney said Malestini has a good shot at qualifying for the state open in the 100 free and breaking school records in his two events.

The team also has some standout seniors, includ-ing James Wang in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter breastroke. Wang swam as a fresh-man and returned after running in-door track.

“Right now he’s less than one second away from breaking the [school] record

in the 100 [breastroke],” Cooney said.

Distance swimmer TJ Moise is also one of the team’s senior leaders. “He is somebody who has qual-ified for state in the past few years,” Cooney said.

At the Class S tourna-ment, the Terriers will be swimming against schools that are more their equals, but will remain focused on individual performances.

“Our goal is, ‘This is a good race for you. If you win, you win. If you don’t, you don’t,’” Cooney said.

The Rocky Hill boys swimming and diving team will compete next at Plainville High School Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 4 p.m.

Terrier Swimmers Focus on Individual Races

The Rocky Hill boys swim team has a number of state qualifiers this year.

The first legs of Rocky Hill and East Catholic relay teams set to start.

Though Rocky Hill has a number of talented swimmers, the team doesn’t have as much depth as its much larger opponents, such as Newington, Wethersfield, Windsor and Enfield.
