A Message from the Pastor From me to me, it is good for each of us to set aside some intenonal me to spend with Jesus. Each year about this me the priests of the diocese gather together for a spiritual retreat that we might deepen our relaonship with Jesus as we intenonally leave our ordinary rounes and rhythms of life behind. This year we are not gathering, but we are expected to make an individual retreat. One of the recommendaons given to us was to par- cipate in the liſt up your heartsvirtual retreat featuring Sco Hahn. That is the opon that I have chosen. At first, I thought about just staying at the rectory, but aſter further reflecon, I thought that it wouldnt be pru- dent to stay at the rectory if I was truly going to retreat. It is thus that I am wring this bullen arcle the night before I am to leave for a cabin in the Duluth area that I can truly get away and devote some extended quiet me to Jesus. I must admit, since making the decision to retreat to the cabin, my spirits have been upliſted, and I am really looking for- ward to it. The first step in retreat is to get ones atude in order. While food is normally provided on retreat, I have had to make extra preparaons to get things prepared in ad- vance this year. At least with a cabin, I have a full kitchen to work with. It is hard to focus on Jesus when hungry. The blessing is that I dont have to eat all the extra calories that retreat houses pack into their desserts. Just the basics for meand a few cookies from Christmas! It is also good to plan on a lile bit of exercise on retreat. Exercise helps loosen the mind to leave worry behind. Most priests go for a walk to get outside at least once a day, but since I am heading into the woods, it is me to pack the snowshoes! Even though I snowshoe regularly, the change in scenery will be nice, and the extended forecast looks good. Of course, spiritual reading, bible, journal, cards, and a sketch pad are helpful. TV, radio, and other electronics – not so helpful (other than what is needed for the virtual retreat). The important thing is to have some quiet me to re- flect and relax a lile. Sll, somemes it is hard to turn off the noise. Have you ever noced how loud it gets when eve- rything is quiet? Well, I am offNormally, I would ask you to pray for me, but since I will be back by the me you read this arcle, your prayer will have to be retroacve. • A Message from the Pastor

From time to time, it is good for each of us to set aside some intentional time to spend with Jesus. Each year about this time the priests of the diocese gather together for a spiritual retreat that we might deepen our relationship with Jesus as we intentionally leave our ordinary routines and rhythms of life behind. This year we are not gathering, but we are expected to make an individual retreat. One of the recommendations given to us was to par-

ticipate in the “lift up your hearts” virtual retreat featuring Scott Hahn. That is the option that I have chosen.

At first, I thought about just staying at the rectory, but after further reflection, I thought that it wouldn’t be pru-dent to stay at the rectory if I was truly going to retreat. It is thus that I am writing this bulletin article the night before I am to leave for a cabin in the Duluth area that I can truly get away and devote some extended quiet time to Jesus. I must admit, since making the decision to retreat to the cabin, my spirits have been uplifted, and I am really looking for-ward to it. The first step in retreat is to get one’s attitude in order.

While food is normally provided on retreat, I have had to make extra preparations to get things prepared in ad-vance this year. At least with a cabin, I have a full kitchen to work with. It is hard to focus on Jesus when hungry. The blessing is that I don’t have to eat all the extra calories that retreat houses pack into their desserts. Just the basics for me…and a few cookies from Christmas!

It is also good to plan on a little bit of exercise on retreat. Exercise helps loosen the mind to leave worry behind. Most priests go for a walk to get outside at least once a day, but since I am heading into the woods, it is time to pack the snowshoes!

The important thing is to have some quiet time to re-flect and relax a little. Still, sometimes it is hard to turn off the noise. Have you ever noticed how loud it gets when eve-rything is quiet?

Well, I am off… Normally, I would ask you to pray for me, but since I will be back by the time you read this article, your prayer will have to be retroactive. God will understand, and his grace will be flowing. Retreat…It is so exciting! You should try it.

  • Sunday, January 10, 2021 First Reading Isaiah 55:1-11 (The first reading from Cycle A, Isaiah 42:1-4,6-7, may also be chosen.) Isaiah calls upon the people to return to the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm Isaiah 12:2-3,4-6 (The psalm from Cycle A, Psalm 29:1-4,9-10, may also be chosen.) A prayer of praise for God's salvation.

Second Reading 1 John 5:1-9 (The second reading from Cycle A, Acts of the Apostles 10:34-38, may also be chosen.) The Spirit of Truth testifies on behalf of Jesus, God's Son.

Gospel Reading Mark 1:7-11 Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist.

    Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In most years, this feast is cele-brated on the Sunday after Epiphany. When Epiphany falls on either January 7 or 8, the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the Monday after Epiphany.

In today's Gospel we hear John the Baptist contrast his baptism of repentance with the baptism that Jesus will inaugurate. John the Baptist says that he has baptized with water, but that the one who is to come will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John's baptism was not yet a Christian baptism; it was a preparation for the Christian Baptism we celebrate to-day, and through which sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received. In ac-cepting John's baptism, Jesus, though sinless, united himself with all sinners.

The baptism of Jesus is reported in each of the three Synoptic Gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Clearly, Jesus' baptism was an event of great significance for Jesus and for the early Christian community. Mark and Luke report the story from Jesus' perspective; the voice from heaven is addressed to Jesus. In Matthew's Gospel, the voice from heaven speaks to all who are present. The descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at his baptism shows that something new is beginning through the baptism and ministry of Jesus.

The baptism of Jesus is considered an important manifestation of God in the person of Jesus, another epiphany. Jesus' baptism inaugurates his mission. Mark's Gospel moves quickly from the report of Jesus' baptism to Jesus' temptations in the desert to his minis-try in Galilee after John's arrest. The end of the ministry of John the Baptist is the begin-ning of Jesus' ministry. In an analogous way, our Baptism inaugurates our mission as Christians.

Surprisingly, on this the last day of the Christmas season the Gospel does not tell a story from Jesus' childhood. Instead the Gospel reveals Jesus' relationship to God: the Son of Mary and Joseph is also God's own Son. We believe that through Baptism we are also made children of God.

Honoring Marriage Day There will be a celebration on Saturday, May 1 at the Ca-thedral of St Mary in St Cloud for couples celebrating 5, 25, 40, 50 or 60 plus years of marriage. We, as a diocese would like to honor you and your commitment to each other and the great example you are setting. Please let the parish office know by February 1 if you are cele-brating these anniversary years so we can send the infor-mation to the diocese. Stewardship as a Way of Life: “And a voice came from the heavens, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” — Mark 1:11 Through our baptism, we too, are daughters and sons of God. We are disciples of Jesus. As true disciples we are called to actively participate in our Catholic faith, not just be mere bystanders. This means working in collaboration with the Holy Spirit and discern-ing how we are being asked to use our gifts — using them for the benefit of others and not just for our own inter-ests and comfort. Bishop’s Annual Appeal: Blessings to all of you. Thanks to your generosity we have achieved our 2020 goal! As of December 30, the Appeal raised $1,347,348 in gifts and pledges toward the goal of $1,300,000. Every dollar raised goes directly to ministries that support our Catho-lic faith and is not used for any other purpose.

The ministry of the vocation poster They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. This year’s vocation poster pictures twelve seminarians for the diocese of Saint Cloud. They need our prayers and encouragement. Take a look at the new poster and put a face with a name. Ten of the seminarians are returning from last year; two are new. Maybe you know someone who would look good on a poster like this in a few years. Ask them if they have ever thought about becoming a priest. You never know when God will plant the seed of priesthood in the heart of a young man.

12 seminarians (9 college level, 3 graduate level) Only one ordination is anticipated over the next

three years – please pray for vocations. It takes 8 years for someone coming out of high

school to become a priest (4 years college, 4 years graduate seminary).

It takes 6 years if they have a college degree (2 years philosophy, 4 years graduate seminary).

Prayer for Vocations Gracious God and Father, We praise You for Your goodness and love. You teach us that each vocation is born in prayer and only through prayer does it persevere and bear fruit. We ask You to stir the hearts of all those You call to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life in the Diocese of Saint Cloud. Make them generous. Make them courageous. Make them joyful in giving everything to Jesus. Send Your Holy Spirit upon our families and children. Choose from our parishes, our homes, and our schools those called to this adventure of sanctity. With Mary, Mother of every vocation, we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  • Saint Hilary (300-368) Doctor of the Church

    Feast Day – January 13

Saint Hilary was born in Poitiers in Gaul (present day France) to parents of ancient nobili-ty, who were pagans. As he grew older, Hilary thought about the existence of man, and thought that there must be a supreme eternal being. His theory was proved when he studied the Hebrew Scriptures, Hilary came to know God and understand His truths, believing in the divini-ty of Jesus Christ. Hilary, his wife and his daugh-ter were baptized. Hilary was so gentle, devoted, and had such great knowledge, that priests looked up to him. When the bishop of Poitiers died, Hilary was chosen to replace him, even though he was a married man. As bishop, Hilary continued to defend the truth of Christ’s divinity, to the consternation of the Arians and emperor Constantius, who banished Hilary to Phrygia, hoping to silence him. Hilary would not be silenced, continuing to correspond with and encourage the priests at Poitiers to resist the Arians. During his exile, Hilary accomplished some of his best writings on the Trinity. He also wrote a diplomatic letter to Constantius, who allowed him to return to Poitiers. Hilary insisted on separation of Church and government. Due to Hilary’s diplomacy, France was saved from Arianism.
