Special Parent and Volunteer Nights

Announcing Special Parents Nights 4-H is hosting several events with special guest speakers this year, in an effort to support parents raising safe and healthy families. In November, we hosted our first Parent’s Night on Suicide Prevention and Awareness. Over 30 people attended. The next two sessions include: Stress Management and Bullying and Safety. Parents, please plan to join us! If there are additional topics of interest to you, please let us know. Session 2 - Stress Management Workshop The economy, jobs, lack of jobs, family, health and relationships…the list of stressors in life is endless. In order to continue to support parents, leaders, and families…Pueblo County 4-H is hosting a workshop on Stress Management. The program will be presented by Dr. Charlie Vial, Rehabilitation Psychologist from Parkview Hospital. Stress is a part of everyone’s life; please join us to learn how to recognize when you or others are stressed, the physiological changes, and constructive ways to manage stress. It is important that we not only learn how to manage the stress in our lives, but how to model that behavior for our youth. January 19 – First Presbyterian Church, Fellowship Hall — 220 West 10th Street, Pueblo, Colorado 81003

A light dinner will be served from 6:00-6:30 p.m. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Please RSVP by January 18 so we can plan the appropriate amount of food and handouts. You are welcome to bring guests. The event is open to the community!

Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines…

The Office will strictly enforce all deadlines. Remember, meeting deadlines is a valuable life skill. Our office will make it a priority to get information out in a timely manner, so that you have time to meet the deadlines. Occasionally, if we’ve gotten information late or after the newsletter has gone out for the month, deadlines will be shorter.

Usage Requirements for the Fairgrounds The Colorado State Fair again has a decreased amount of staff, due to budget constraints. They have requested we continue the following protocol for our use of the facilities at the Fairgrounds: The State Fairgrounds is closed on Mondays through

April 2012 You must make all building reservations through the

Extension Office. All reservations are on a first come, first served basis. Reservations/requests and building set up instructions must

be made at least two weeks in advance of the event, using the appropriate form from the Extension office.

If you cancel your event, you must notify the office and your club members.

A club representative must pick up a key at the State Fairgrounds, the day of the event between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Keys must be put in the drop box on the 4-H Exhibit Hall. Staff will no longer unlock or lock buildings.

The Selection of Trips and Awards Did you know that many of our special trips outside the county and state require youth to complete and turn in a County Report Form? And, did you know some of the most prestigious 4-H awards Pueblo County gives require youth to complete and turn in a County Report Form? Report forms have been, and still are, the best way for 4-H members to show their community service and leadership experiences, awards, community activities and project growth. They are also an excellent record keeping tool. As youth prepare college, scholarship and awards applications, they are able to use all the information that’s been compiled in their report form – instead of trying to remember and re-create their community involvement. Filling out a report form takes some time, but once you start, it’s a matter of updating it each year and well worth the work! A Report Form workshop will be held July 24, the location to be determined.

4-H Organizational Leaders Meeting When: January 23 Where: 6:30 p.m. A light dinner will be provided at 6:00 p.m. Please RSVP by January 20 If you are a 4-H Club Organizational Leader, please plan to attend. If you cannot attend, feel free to send another leader in your place. Also feel free to bring additional leaders with you! We would like to have a discussion, communication and get ideas about making the most of the club experience for families, supporting organizational and other club leaders, how the Extension Office can provide subject matter training, county project meetings, etc.

Enrollment Policy The following enrollment fee will be in effect for the 2011-2012 year:

A $35.00 fee will cover the enrollment for up to two projects One additional project can be added for $5.00* Enrollment fee for Cloverbuds will be $20.00

*4-H youth may enroll in no more than three projects during one year. Each 4-H member is expected to complete ALL of the projects in which they are enrolled; that means completing a record book for each of those projects and exhibiting their project (preferably at the Pueblo County Fair except under special circumstances). We understand that each 4-H member and their family has time constraints, and by taking a reasonable amount of projects that can be completed, the member will feel successful, enjoy their 4-H experience, and increase their knowledge. If a family feels their 4-H member has the time and resources to take and complete more than three projects, youth may write a brief request outlining their plan to take and complete additional projects. Requests should be sent to Vanessa.

Returning 4-H members enrollments are due by February 15, 2012. New member enrollments and add/drops on the Drop/Add Form are due by March 15, 2012

Clubs who have had a particular booth in the past have first priority of that booth if fully registered by February 17 (including payment and information). Containers will be turned in after the carnival and Youth Council will count the tickets. Clubs make 75% of the proceeds from their booth and $5 of their entry fee. The remainder goes to 4-H. Horse Council Meeting The next 4-H Horse Council Meeting will be held Tuesday, January 10th at the 6:30 at the 4-H Auditorium at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. Many important changes will be discussed at this meeting – please plan to attend and give us your input – this is YOUR horse program!!!

New Horse Leaders The horse program in Pueblo is growing and the number of leaders is diminishing. If you know of someone that would be willing to start a new horse club or assist with an established club, please have them get in touch with Carol in the Extension Office. They would need to fill out an application, go through a background check, provide three references and attend a new leader orientation meeting. Let’s keep our successful horse program going in 2012!

4-H Horse Safety Clinic Dates Set The Horse Safety Training Guidelines for 2011-2012 will be as follows:

If you are a new member to 4-H, you MUST be evaluated for

the 2011/2012 4-H year.

If you are a transfer from another county and/or are a Pre-

Level, you MUST be evaluated for the 2011/2012 4-H year. Remember - you DO need to bring your horse, your equipment and helmets must be worn. Dates for these clinics are March 17 and March 31. The Horse Committee is working on some changes for these clinics. Plans will be finalized soon. If you have any questions, please contact Carol in the Extension Office.

Time For Horse Tests As we get closer to testing dates for Spring, Summer and County Fair Horse Shows, please be advised that these dates will be April 24 for the Spring Show, June 12 for Summer Show and June 25 for Pueblo County Fair. At the last Horse Committee Meeting, after being asked to provide a study guide for the tests, Amy Decker talked about what to study for the tests. She stated that she has a bank of questions and that she uses and reviews questions the youth miss frequently and ask them again. She stated that anyone is welcome to have copies of the old tests to study from. She felt this was the best study guide. It was requested to make the past three years tests available on the website for youth to study. We will post these tests on the 4-H website in January

State 4-H Horse Level Rater’s Training Carol is working with Fremont County in planning a date to host a level rater’s training in the Spring either in Pueblo or Canon City. Dates and more specific information will be announced in future newsletters.

2012 Horse Show Dates We have contacted the fairgrounds and made the following res-ervations for upcoming Horse Safety Clinics and Horse Shows. Rocky Mountain Horse Expo The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo will be held in Denver at the National Western Complex in Denver Colorado on March 9-11, 2012. This year’s Expo features Julie Goodnight. Julie Goodnight has more than a quarter-century of horse training experience. Her varied background ranges from dressage and jumping to racing, reining, colt-starting, and wilderness riding. She teaches "Classic Skills for a Natural Ride" and travels coast-to-coast and beyond to film her award-winning television show, Horse Master, as well as to appear at horse expos, conferences and clinics. Her training and teaching techniques are frequent features of Horse & Rider, The Trail Rider and America's Horse. Colorado 4-H Animal Care And Housing Form & Premises Registration Due With Enrollments

The Colorado 4-H Youth Development Program’s policy regarding livestock is: All 4-H members with livestock and horse projects will be required to have a completed, signed, and approved ―Animal Care and Housing Form for Colorado 4-H Livestock Projects‖ on file at their county Extension office at time of enrollment. Colorado 4-H believes this policy is a bold step forward to enhance the traceability of 4-H livestock and horse project animals in Colorado to a higher level than that of the past year. The animal care form insures that 4-H members do their own work on their livestock project animals. Moreover, use of this form captures information about species, location the animal(s) is housed, and contact information that can be used in an animal disease outbreak situation. This information will be held at the local level for use in an animal disease emergency. Each youth enrolled in livestock/animal project must complete the form and return it to our office by the final enrollment deadline of March 15. The form will be available on our county 4-H web site and is in this 4-H newsletter.

Craig Thalhamer Memorial Goat Chain – Applications due January 17

Pueblo County 4-H families started a Dairy Goat Chain in memory of friend and 4-H member Craig Thalhamer. The last recipient was Johanna Klein. Applications are due no later than January 17 and are available in the Extension Office. One member will be selected each year to receive a registered doeling. Requirements are as follows:

Members must be enrolled in 4-H for the year in which the

application is made.

Members must enroll in the dairy goat project for the coming

year.

Housing, feed, and care of the dairy goat must be provided

by the 4-H member.

Your 4-H leader must recommend you for this award and

sign that they know you are capable of caring for the animal.

The dairy goat project must be complete for at least the next

two years, and the doe must be shown at the Pueblo County Fair.

Breeding of the doe will be provided by members of the

CTM Dairy Goat Chain.

The first doe kid from the scholarship doe will be returned to

the CTM Dairy Goat chain for another 4-H member.

Members may elect to pay an agreed price if they wish to

keep their first doe kid.

No bucks may be sold from your scholarship doe. (This may

be waved.)

Upon completion of the above requirements your contract

will be considered complete and you will then be the official owner of the original doe.

In case of the death of your scholarship doe, the above

requirements will be dropped. (CTM Committee must be notified through CSU extension office.)

Animal Care and Housing Form for Pueblo County 4-H Livestock Projects

DUE TO CSU Extension NO LATER THAN MARCH 15, 2012

It is the responsibility of every 4-H member to ensure that proper care is taken of their animal(s) according to acceptable methods of

good animal husbandry, as set forth by Colorado State University Extension and the Colorado Department of Agriculture. A healthy

animal requires sufficient food, water, shelter, and appropriate health care. Cruel and inhumane training methods are prohibited in the

Colorado State University Extension 4-H Program and will not be tolerated. Specific animal husbandry guidelines and humane training

methods are provided in the appropriate 4-H manual. It is necessary for the local county Extension office to know the location of all 4-H

livestock/horse projects.

The Colorado 4-H current project recommendation for primary care states that “4-H members will provide primary and continuous care

of their project animals.” Primary care is defined as the 4‑H member making the decisions for and/or providing the care, han-

dling, and training of their animal project a majority of the time. Primary care exemption must be approved by the designated local

representative body comprised of at least one Extension agent and other committee representatives as appointed by the Extension office.

The county will determine a one-step appeal process if request is denied.

Each situation for exemption of primary care will be evaluated within the exhibitor’s county by an appropriate review body. An ap-

proval or disapproval of the situation will be communicated to the participant(s) in writing. An appeal may be submitted through estab-

lished grievance channels established in each county. 4-H members and guardians acknowledge that approval of facilities and animal

welfare checks may be conducted at anytime by the local county Extension agent.

Submission of this animal care document is required by all 4-H animal project participants each 4-H year. Please check the box for each

species you will be enrolled in this year. Sign and return this form to your county Extension office as a commitment to the above guide-

lines.
