Imagine that you drive a Metro. Your daily commute to work includes 80 highway miles and 10 city miles, each way. If you start the week with a full tank, on what day will you need to buy gas?
Suppose the following two cars travel 100 miles, half in the city and half on the highway. Which uses the least amount of gas? Ferrari Maranello (9 mpg city / 14 mpg highway) Lamborghini Diablo (10 mpg city / 13 mpg highway)
Choose a car. Use information from a website, magazine, or car dealer to determine how far this car can travel on one tank of gas.

High School Math Courses in Middle School

Middle School Math Acceleration Guidance
August 2015
When students take Algebra 1 (that is, in which grade) is less important than whether students are ready to take it.
The term “compacted” means to compress content, which requires a faster pace to complete, as opposed to skipping content.
Office of Standards and Learning
60
Considerations for Acceleration
August 2015
Accelerating students in middle school should be selective and decided on an individual basis.
Each student’s math skills should be evaluated and a determination is made whether a more advanced math course is appropriate or not.
Students should not be accelerated based on a characteristic independent of prior achievement or preparedness (e.g., grade level or age).
Office of Standards and Learning
61
Considerations for Acceleration
August 2015
Decisions to accelerate students into Grade 8 Algebra 1 should be based on solid evidence of student learning. This evidence could include:Placement testsMAP (RIT Score)GradesGifted and Talented in academicsStudent study skillsTeacher/counselor recommendation
Office of Standards and Learning
62
Considerations for Acceleration
August 2015
Schools must ensure that the course content is not watered down and that interventions for struggling students are in place.
Office of Standards and Learning
63
Research
August 2015
There is no evidence that shows that rising enrollments in advanced eighth grade math courses are correlated with ‐achievement gains on NAEP (Loveless, 2015).
Studies of California’s algebra policies found a trade off: ‐rising enrollments but also a rising number of failures (Williams, et. al., 2011).
In North Carolina, researchers from Duke uncovered negative results after studying a Charlotte Mecklenburg ‐initiative to expand algebra in eighth grade: lower scores on the Algebra 1 test and then lower pass rates in Geometry and Algebra II in subsequent years (Clotfelter, et. al., 2011).
