Here are a few recommendations from Jane Ryan students… Jai, in kindergarten, likes the book Hot Rod Hamster and the Wacky Whatever Race!, by Cynthia Lord. The reason he likes this book is because he likes the idea that the hamster built his car from a box and his friends helped him. And that he won the race! Tessa, in first grade, recom- mends Hope the Happiness Fairy, by Daisy Meadows, enthusing: “I like this book because there are goblins in it and they are funny. I like this book because there is dance in it. The fairies are so ex- cited that they are going to live like princesses!” Jake, in second grade, enjoys Warrior: Firestar’s Quest, by Erin Hunter. He says, “I like the book because it has cats who are on a quest to rebuild Sky Clan, which is the fifth clan.” Kayla, in third grade, says one of her favorite books is Miss Laney is Zany!, by Dan Gutman. It’s one of her favorites because there are so many funny parts in the book. One of the funniest parts is when Miss Laney starts her own game show in the girls bathroom at school! Michael, in fourth grade, says his favorite books are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. His particular favorite is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. He likes it best because it describes a family’s really funny road trip. Along the way, Greg, who is the main character, and his family encounter many different “cra- zy” people. They make lots of stops at gross restaurants and a crowded water park. It’s a really funny adventure! Colleen, in fifth grade, recom- mends Stargirl, by Jerry Spinelli. She says, “Stargirl is a great book for boys and girls because it is about individuality and unique- ness. When I read this book I felt happy and sad and sometimes excited about what was going to happen next. I just could not put the book down.” One of Mrs. Bolton’s favorite books is Have You Filled a Bucket Today, by Carol McCloud and illustrated by David Messing. Mrs. Bolton explains, “I have not only read this book with my students, but also my own children. Filling an (invisible) bucket is a good way to show compassion and caring. It was so rewarding for my children to show and discuss their appreciation, kindness and love by filling someone’s bucket. That became part of our daily life and conversation with a focus on pos- itive behavior. I hope your bucket is full today and always!” Student Book Recommendations.

100 Day Celebration

Winter provides many opportunities for students and families to curl up with a good book. Here are a few recommendations from Jane Ryan students…

Jai, in kindergarten, likes the book Hot Rod Hamster and the Wacky Whatever Race!, by Cynthia Lord. The reason he likes this book is because he likes the idea that the hamster built his car from a box and his friends helped him. And that he won the race!

Tessa, in first grade, recom-mends Hope the Happiness Fairy, by Daisy Meadows, enthusing: “I like this book because there are goblins in it and they are funny. I like this book because there is dance in it. The fairies are so ex-cited that they are going to live like princesses!”

Michael, in fourth grade, says his favorite books are the Diary of a

Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. His particular favorite is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. He likes it best because it describes a family’s really funny road trip. Along the way, Greg, who is the main character, and his family encounter many different “cra-zy” people. They make lots of stops at gross restaurants and a crowded water park. Happy March!

February just flew by with a long President’s Day weekend and some shortened days due to weather.

A highlight this month was the Annual Father’s Club Super Bowl Breakfast. Numerous families were served delicious pancakes by our fathers. It was a

wonderful, fun-filled day with great raffles and games. Thank you to all our Dads who helped to make this event a success.

All the students and staff also experienced a fun, lively dance presentation this week called “Emo-tion in Motion”. Thanks to TAY for their support in getting some exciting programs into our buildings.

Classes worked hard showing Jane Ryan Pride and as a reward, we had our first whole school PRIDE BINGO on Friday! Thanks to the team who planned and organized. It was a nice way to end the week with an exciting and fun game. Look out for the PTA Bingo this Friday at Madison Middle School.

Stay warm and spring is around the corner!

Sincerely, Mrs. Bolton

Jane Ryan PTA Hello Parents! Hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather. The PTA would like to remind you of some upcoming events for March.

Thursday, March 3rd is our PTA meeting at 7pm in the Media Center. Friday, March 4th is Bingo Night at Madison Middle School. This is a fun family evening with Bingo, pizza, desserts and prizes.

In closing we are still in need of filling many PTA vacancies for the 2016-2017 school year. Co-Presidents, Bingo Chairs, and After School Enrichment Chairperson are still open. At Jane Ryan Elementary School, students practice Jane Ryan Pride. To show Lion Pride is to:

Be Respectful, Encourage Others, Do Your Best

School-wide bingo was a great success! Recently students viewed

a breaking news announcement on their Smartboard during which

Leo the Lion visited Mrs. Bolton while she was working in her office. He told her all about his idea to

play Bingo and asked her to remind students to always Be Respectful, Encourage Others, and Do Their

Best! Please reinforce our Jane Ryan PRIDE with your children at home. Asking them to give an example

of how they showed their PRIDE is a great way to start off dinner conversation. Below is a link to the

announcement we saw in school!

Thrive: The Essence of DanceOn Friday, February 19th, Trumbull Arts for Youth presented their 2016 program at Jane Ryan. Thrive - The Essence of Dance, an ensemble comprised of 4 professional dancers, performed a variety of dance routines in different genres, including tap, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, acrobatic dance and musical theater, while showing the children how they can explore and express their emotions through dance. Throughout the performance, they engaged the students in movement and theatrical activ-ities to allow them a glimpse of self-expression and creativity through the arts. In what has now become an annual tradition, TAY presented Jane Ryan School with a new book for the library, My Story, My Dance: Robert Battle’s Journey to Alvin Ailey, to commemorate this year’s programming theme and to give the students a chance to learn more about dance.

Junior AchievementIt is that time of year again… we are looking for volunteers to help with

Junior Achievement in our first grade through fifth grade classrooms. It is a fun and exciting way for parents to contribute directly to student learning!

Junior Achievement provides volunteers with step-by-step materials to complete 5 classroom lessons. The lessons last between 30 and 45 minutes, and volunteers can easily split the

lessons. For example, one volunteer could handle the first two lessons and another the final three lessons. Additionally, Junior Achievement offers an orientation for all new volunteers.

Please contact Maura Rhodes if you are interested or want more information at [email protected] or 203.556.8039.
