Jandowae Trail Bike RideThis year’s Jandowae Trail Bike was the best attended of three rides held in recent years, with 435 riders attending over the weekend of 5th and 6th July. We have received much positive feedback from riders about the track and the way our event was run.

Many arrived on Friday night and camped out under the stars, and were treated to a reasonably warm Saturday morning, but ice covered the hill early Sunday. This didn’t slow anyone down for long though!

A full canteen operated on both Saturday and Sunday, and riders also enjoyed wood fired pizzas on Saturday night while they watched the day’s activities on the big screen.

Community events such as the Jandowae Trail Bike Ride rely on the support of not only the riders, who we thank for making the trip to Jandowae, but also sponsors and volunteers.

We are grateful for the support of all of our sponsors, including our major sponsor in 2014, Arrow Energy, and the Western Downs Regional

Council, for in kind assistance. This event would also not have been possible without the cooperation of our landholders, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks for allowing use of your land both leading up to and during the Trail Bike Ride weekend.

As with every community event, volunteers are the driving force and it was fantastic to see a range of people from our community donating their time both before, during and after the Trail Bike Ride. Tracks were prepared and patrolled by sweeps over the weekend, signs were erected and the campsite prepared, tents went up and down again, people baked and served in the canteen, while others stood at gates, delivered fuel and coordinated communications. We thank everyone who assisted a little or a lot, as the combined effort made for a great event in 2014, with local community groups set to benefit financially.

We are looking forward to another well supported event in 2015!

A Note from the Team…..The Western Downs has some exciting events occurring around the region in the next month. Most notably, Dalby is holding the Delicious & DeLIGHTful festival on the 23rd–24th August (p12), and the Beef, Bells & Bottle Tree Festival is scheduled for the 4th–14th September in Miles (p21-24). We encourage you all to visit these great local events, support your communities and have fun while meeting some new, friendly people!

Ann had the pleasure of meeting with Chris and the team at Dalby Landscape & Home Garden Supplies this month, and she found that not only do they stock everything you need for the garden, but they have a wonderful range of gift and housewares available too! You can read about it on pages 36-37. This is the first of our Business Profile’s to be published, if you would like the opportunity to have your business advertised in this way, please phone Shelly: 0417 829 080.

The Dalby Harvest now has a new home in the main street of Dalby, and Amy is loving the opportunity to work in the town! While it is the new home of the Dalby Harvest, feel free to drop in and have a chat to Amy about any of your design needs. She is happy to talk with you about design, and also help you go through your advertising options for any of our magazines! The office at 133 Cunningham Street (Chamber of Commerce building) is open Mondays to Wednesdays from 9am–4pm, and Thursday and Friday by appointment. Don’t forget that our Jandowae office is also a great place to get more information about design and advertising in the magazines; Kate and Karel are more than happy to help you out!

We hope you enjoy your August edition of the ‘Jandowae Mill’, and look forward to the great events that the Western Downs has to offer this month.

Calendar Jandowae Welcomes Ross to TownI have been in the Ambulance service for 37 years and worked in numerous areas around Queensland. Most of my service has been in the western areas of the state.

I enjoy my job and find it very rewarding. Although there are sad times, there are also some very happy times.

I look forward to being a part of the Jandowae community and being involved in some of its activities.

My main interest is in the area of drugs and alcohol, which I have been involved in for over 20 years. This has been a passion of mine, as I believe our children need to be empowered with the right knowledge so that they can make the right choices, and Think Safe, Act Safe and Stay Safe.

I established a life education unit in North Western Queensland, and presented drug and alcohol talks to schools and community

organisations. Our children are our future and we need to protect our future.

I enjoy a bit of sport, including golf, cricket, tennis and occasionally squash.

Family is important, and I am fortunate to have two daughters and two sons (all grown up) and two granddaughters.

Warra RacesPatrons had a great day at the Warra Races on Saturday 5th July. The weather was fine and the cool south westerly stayed away for most of the day. A crowd of approximately 450 to 500 people came together to make the day a great occasion of racing and socialising.

There was six races for the day which included an Arabian race to kick off events.

Jandowae “Jammin”WOW! What a Sunday session we had last month. I was run off my feet and we had at least 80 people and heaps of food for all to enjoy.

Over the next few months the hall will be going through a few changes, all thanks to QGC, JBCG and the WDRC. This is stemming from the efforts over the last year, and coordinating the grant and extra funds from the Western Downs Regional Council to have the Memorial Hall repainted and repaired. The JBCG was given the official announcement of the QGC Grant for the painting of the Hall.

Let me thank Cr Tony Brame, Carolyn Fisher and Wayne Osburn from the WDRC and Sarah Worthing from QGC for all their work and enthusiasm.

The Sunday session was again full of different and very talented people from our local area and also from Toowoomba, Kingaroy, Dalby and Chinchilla. All in all, about 16 different artists.

Let me put a special thanks to the Boys of Boongara (Charlie, Geoff and Ken) and a local thanks to a talented young lady by the name of Lacey Brownhall; it’s great to see a young lady come and entertain the crowd. It was just beautiful. (I still can’t get the gist of the cup thing; guess I lack coordination.) It’s also great to see David Rice coming out of his shell and playing some great songs.

Did everybody see the pictures in the Dalby Herald: a full page of photos of the day and everybody enjoying the music. Let me thank you for coming along and making the day what it is, I enjoy putting it together with Les and Oakey, two people who have a passion for the music and what it gives to the town. Again thank you all.

Next one is the, 10th of August 2014, from 1 - 5 pm, with smoko at 3pm. See you at the Hall!

Bell Race Club to Benefit from QGC Sustainable Communities FundThe Committee and members of the Bell Race Club are delighted at having secured a grant to further enhance their facilities.

QGC Pty Ltd has provided $29,467 from the QGC Sustainable Communities Fund to install roller doors on the covered spectator area at the Bell Recreation Reserve.

The grant will allow the Bell Race Club to enclose the covered spectator area and greatly improve the facility for year-round activities by providing protection from the elements.

Spokesman for the Bell Race Club, Wayne McGuire, said he welcomed the QGC funding that would allow the club to add the roller doors.

“It was a project which had been discussed by the club for many years without the financial means to achieve it. All patrons will now be able to enjoy a much more comfortable time at the many events hosted at the grounds by the various associations and private groups,’’ Mr McGuire said.

Don McNamara, president of the Bell Show Society, who is one of the other associations sharing the facilities said, “This grant will provide a much needed addition to the covered area and we welcome the support QGC are providing through the Race Club. The doors will be most welcome especially with protection through the winter months from the prevailing easterly winds,” Don said.

QGC Vice President Sustainability Brett Smith said the QGC Sustainable

Communities fund was established to benefit communities within QGC’s area of operation in Western Downs, Gladstone, North Burnett and Banana Shire Local Government Areas.

Landcare NewsBrigalow Floodplain Landcare group will be holding their AGM on the 11 September at the Jandowae Cultural Centre and Library. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP so we can organise catering. With the new funding models proposed by both State and Federal Governments, it will be interesting to identify how the community perceives Landcare, and what new directions Landcare should take moving forward to the future. We can only achieve this with the support and input from the community.

There are a few regional representative positions vacant at the moment, so if there is anyone interested in volunteering please contact us. These areas include the deputy rep for the Brigalow Floodplain and the deputy rep for the Yaralla/Pirrinuan areas. If anyone is interested in any of the management committee positions, please contact the BJFG.

We would like to thank Kelly Waddell for all her help and the work that she undertook in the role of secretary for the Brigalow Jimbour Floodplain group. She will be missed and we would like to wish her all the best for her future endeavours. Kelly has been working for BJFG as secretary for the last four years and during that time has been an integral part of the BJFG executive. They will certainly be very big shoes to fill.

Jandowae and District Progress and Heritage AssociationOver the Timbertown weekend, the Athlone Cottage precinct proved to be a very popular destination for both visitors and past residents. It was amazing how much interest was shown in the further development of the site-mainly the original school building.

It was pleasing to see over 50 people attend the Sunday morning combined Churches service and a collection for the Chaplaincy at the Jandowae State School resulted in over $500 being received.

Following the Timbertown weekend, I received a phone call from Bruce Thomas. He was particularly interested in the school project and offered a very generous and substantial amount of money. As a result of Bruce’s generosity the committee has taken the first steps to commence restoration of the old building.

Ian Gall and I have made two trips to Toowoomba bringing back weatherboards and regency pine boards which have been purchased from Toowoomba Recycled Timber and Furniture.

With this timber now on site, we are in discussions with our preferred builder as to the cost of this work and as to when he can start the restoration. We are talking to the Western Downs Regional Council regarding their in-kind support scheme, which may be able to help us with the drainage of storm water from our buildings.

The interest in Athlone Collage precinct is growing all the time with more groups visiting our site. So far this year we have had weddings, school visits, men’s clubs, seniors’ groups, and caravan clubs visiting our historic site.

Expression of Interest to Host Australia Day 2015Each year, an opportunity arises for community groups to nominate an Expression of Interest to host the following years Australia Day celebrations. In 2015 a host organisation and venue is required in the Jandowae and District area for a breakfast event.

The aim is to have a function unique to other Australia Day events, displaying how proud we are to be Australian. Western Downs Regional Council is currently calling for Expressions of Interest from groups or organisations wishing to host the Australia Day Celebrations for Monday 26 January 2015.

Why not get a committee together in your local town area to share the celebrations. Submissions are to be in writing to CEO Western Downs Regional Council PO Box 551 Dalby Qld 4405.

Expressions of Interest close Friday 26 September 2014.

Enquiries: Doug Henning (Community & Events Offi cer) Ph: 4679 4421 E:[email protected].

Jandowae ScoutsScouts meet on Tuesdays from 5:30–7:30pm, while Joeys and Cubs are on Thursdays from 4:45pm–6:45pm. Joeys and Cubs are combined at present until the Joey group grows again. Remember, if you have a child aged 6 to 10.5 years old, please think about the adventure and personal development available through the Scouting movement. Our Section Leaders will be happy to see some new faces enjoying the programmes on offer.

How quickly the past 4 four weeks seem to have gone. News this month is that a number of exciting Scout and Cub Camps are offered in the term programme, undertaken by Section Leaders. Section leaders are also in need of parent/family helpers for weekly activities. The more help they receive the more time they can devote to the youth programmes.

Website - We are now part of the Darling Downs Region to be known as “Beauaraba” with the Regional Commissioner Michael Brown. We are linked to an overall website via a ‘tag button’. New information and pictures have yet to be added in. It would seem there have been past websites, now discontinued, with unknown webmasters. If anyone still has access to these defunct sites, would they please let us know ASAP so they can be deactivated or dismantled. At present, when they do pop-up they are misleading, even indicating no local contacts or are very out of date. Your help on this is sought. In the meantime, we have asked the HQ techies if they have any ideas how we might deactivate these old websites!!! Ah…the wonders and frustrations of the new technologies.

Drum-Muster Update - The Drum Muster is continuing. Unfortunately, the expected July on-farm pickup was derailed due to an accident (broken leg!) of the driver/operator of the onsite drum crushing plant. Finding a temporary, skilled replacement in Toowoomba depot has taken some time. The pickup WILL go ahead. We have several good pickups registered. If YOU still have drums for pickup and would like to register there is still space for you. The truck takes up to 10,000 on a visit, so do not feel you’ve missed out. Ring up today and it will happen.

The Role of the Committee, Group Leaders and Section Leaders - The Committee and Group Leader work hard to make these activities possible. The Committee and Group Leader have a focus which is concerned with outcomes and overall welfare of youth rather than direct involvement on a weekly basis. The Group Leader and Committee enable the Section Leaders to deliver programmes in line with Australian and World Scouting Guidelines. There is a good deal of background administration and paperwork involved. In turn fundraising and housekeeping tasks form a part of the Committee activity. These days much of this is still through monthly or ‘as needed’ meetings. However a good deal of the Group Leader’s tasks are via the internet and phone calls. Some of this is regular administration, as well as following up on grant and financial subsidies which might be available to the Group. The Section Leaders, on the other hand, are fully focussed on the youth members and the weekly activities in a closer, more personal way.

At our recent half-yearly report meeting, it was agreed that Committee and Section Leader names, contacts and positions would be added to our News Brief inline with general HQ and legislation requirements.

Sincerely, yours in Scouting, the Jandowae Group. Grp Ldr. Lions ClubThe Jandowae Lions Club recently had morning tea at the Taralga Retirement Village, where we had great pleasure in presenting three sets of outdoor tables and chairs to the village for use by the residents when they are outside enjoying the lovely days. We are proud to be able to assist our local residents with things they are able to get use and enjoyment from. It was a lovely morning and the staff supplied a delicious morning tea for us, and we wish Mr Geoff Sullivan and all his staff a very good year ahead.

Jandowae Business & Community GroupHello everybody. It’s been a busy couple of weeks, with the announcement of the QGC grant the JBCG received, which was a bit over $39,000.

From that QGC painting grant, has come more good news and with the financial boost of the WDRC. The hall maintenance issues are being rectified, with new bottom area aluminium doors, all the ceiling/wall panels being replaced that need to be, the new front patio / deck and stairs, and the plumbing. The WDRC are also looking into a replacement stove. What this means is that the Hall will be tided up and hopefully be able to be used and appreciated more by the community.

On the 13th August, the Memorial Hall Committee is having a meeting at 6pm at the Hall, so come along and let the committee know your opinion on what colour you would like the building to be. It’s a beautiful building so lets make it gleam again for all to enjoy.

The JBCG is coasting along with some more of it’s strategic plan agendas, such as a Tourism and Business package, which is based on selling Jandowae to outside businesses and also letting tourists know what we have is a “Great Place to Be”.

The Central Town Park is still waiting on a bin and also water to be turned on, so when the plants are placed into position we will be able to care for them.

The town signage is moving forward thanks to Jess Flynn from Western Downs Magazines. Let me tell you, they look great and will give Jandowae a point of difference from the other regional towns.

Brad Bourne, is busy applying for grants from whoever is giving funds out. The grant process is not an easy one, but all you can do is keep trying. Well done Brad.

Our meetings are at 7pm at the Cultural Centre/Library on the 2nd Monday of each month. See ya there; come along and hear about what’s going on in your town.

Brigalow Dresses Up Again for Cancer ResearchThe glitz and glamour of the Annual Brigalow Licenced Ball is on again on Saturday, August 16. The ball has always been a much-anticipated event on the Brigalow Social Calendar. Dances and events have been held at the Brigalow Hall for 80 years. This time honoured tradition will be seeing locals and friends frocking up and doing their part to support fellow Queenslanders affected by cancer.

The Hall committee took the decision several years ago to continue to run the event and donate all profits from the night to the Chinchilla Cancer Council. Having lost several long term and treasured members to cancer, the committee wants to their bit to help to help the cancer council with funds towards research, education and patient support services. As cancer touches so many people in our community the committee wants to make difference in the fight.

President, Bill Dalhleimer is hoping that once again the Brigalow and surrounding communities will once again support this enjoyable event.

People from all ages and families will enjoy a night of dancing and socialising. There will be a licenced bar and prizes available throughout the night with lucky spots, Monte Carlos, raffles and lucky door prizes. The very popular Sound Elite, who will be encouraging us to try the “Gypsy Tap”, “Pride of Erin” and many other popular old-time dances, will provide the musical entertainment. For the young at heart there is always the “Chicken Dance” and “Hokey Pokey”.

There will be a supper to top off a wonderful night. The Brigalow ladies are renowned for their sumptuous suppers with sandwiches, hot savouries and an amazing array of cakes and slices. So come and enjoy a wonderful evening and keep the traditional of old-time dances alive. See you on August 16.

Tai Chi Now In JandowaeTai Chi for Arthritis is a safe and enjoyable program that is easy for people to learn, no matter what their age or physical condition. The movements are slow and gentle and the degree of exertion can be easily adjusted. Tai Chi can be done standing or seated.

Practicing Tai Chi can give relief from many

problems experienced by people suffering with arthritis – pain, depression, and loss of ability to do things. Exercise is known to benefit most aspects of health and is recognised as an essential part of the management of

arthritis. Without regular exercise, joints become stiffer and more painful. Tai Chi for Arthritis gently moves all the joints, muscles and tendons of the body. Jandowae participants are also noticing improvements in their posture and balance, and report that they feel “more aware of self and less likely to fall”.

The Jandowae group meets each Monday at 9am in the Anglican Church Hall at Market Street and they have derived great benefit from these lessons. Joan Seiler, an excellent teacher, is a Level Two Instructor of Tai Chi for Arthritis and has made this program enjoyable. Anyone can learn Tai Chi; men and women of any age. Don’t be put off if you have mobility problems or other physical ailments. Once mastered, Tai Chi may help relieve your symptoms. We encourage visitors from other towns to also attend and reap the benefits from this age-old program. No need to book, just turn up and you will be made most welcome. Cup of tea and a chat afterwards. Lessons will resume on the 25th August.

Dalby Gears Up for Dalby’s Delicious & DeLIGHTful 2014 FestivalDalby Welcoming Community Committee along with its Principal Partner, Arrow Energy, are busily preparing for the fifth Delicious & DeLIGHTful Festival to be held on Saturday, 23rd and Sunday, 24th August. For the first time, the Festival will extend into a two day event.

On the Saturday morning, Cunningham Street will come alive with buskers competing in a busk-off for a place in the Busking Final to be held that night. You will have the opportunity to applaud your favourite artist after the Lantern Parade.

The Festival begins at 3:00 pm at Anderson Park with a Citizenship Ceremony being held for a large group of people becoming Australian citizens. This will be followed by multicultural entertainment which is sure to delight the crowd. A large range of children’s activities will keep the youngsters occupied.

The range of cultures providing delicious food to be sampled has been extended this year to include: Korean, Spanish, Indonesian and Vietnamese as well as the ones that have been so popular in previous years – Indian, South African, Italian, Dutch, German, Chinese, Hungarian, Filipino, English, African and American.

Four hundred small lanterns have been delivered for children, adults and groups to decorate in a multicultural theme and these will be carried in the unique and spectacular Lantern Parade that meanders along beautiful Myall Creek after dark. Complimenting these will be the big and colourful lanterns provided by LightnUp to add to the visual spectacle that celebrates our diverse culture and that people talk about for weeks each year.

Sunday morning will provide a perfect opportunity to relax with a gourmet brunch between 9:00 am

and 12:00 pm and to listen to the Dalby Jazz Band as well as the performers from “Music of the Surat”. Be part of the launch of the CD from that program sponsored by Arrow Energy. Creative artists have also been invited to bring out their easels and brushes etc. and to add to the spectacle. There will be an opportunity to vote for your favourite artist and to view their works.

Sounds like a perfect weekend! We hope to see you there!

Jandowae Uniting ChurchJandowae Uniting Church holds a church service every Sunday morning at 8.30am.

A very staunch member of our church for many years, Mr Ernie Wilson, was back in Jandowae recently. We took the opportunity to say thank you to Ernie for the many years of devoted service to our Uniting Church. We held a special morning tea following our church service and presented Ernie with a framed Certificate of Appreciation. We hope Ernie is enjoying his retirement at Beenleigh.

We welcomed Steve and Sharon Nauschutz, lay

preachers from Chinchilla, back to our church late last month following an extended trip for them around Australia. It was great to see them again and share their fellowship and hear of their holiday exploits.

Remember: Rev. Jenny Sims is the Minister of Dalby Uniting Church as well as Jandowae Uniting Church - she lives in Dalby. Jenny can be contacted on the following phone numbers - 4662 2306 or 0406 477 547; Jandowae contact numbers - Coral - 4668 5440; Neville & Faith - 4668 5344.

On Thursday 3/7/2014 at 10:30am, a two-vehicle traffic crash occurred at the intersection of High St and Dalby St, Jandowae. The drivers are 75 and 78 years of age. Injuries were minor, however extensive damage was caused to both vehicles.

On Wednesday 23/07/2014 at 6am, a 22 year old male driving a Black utility on Jandowae East Rd lost control of his vehicle causing the vehicle to roll onto its roof. The driver was treated at the scene by Jandowae Ambulance with minor injuries.

On Sunday 27/07/2014 between 7 and 8am, two separate traffic crashes occurred at the intersection of Chinchilla Wondai Rd and Jandowae Connection Rd. Drivers who were driving in heavy fog and did not adjust their driving to suit the atmospheric conditions caused both traffic crashes. Property was damaged as both vehicles skidded through the intersection colliding heavily with the fence.

UNRESTRAINED/AT LARGE DOGS:

There are a number of dogs continually roaming the township at present, there are also dogs jumping over fences attacking dogs on leashes being walked by their owners. Jandowae Police will work alongside WDRC animal control officers and impound dogs found at large.

Group B NewsWelcome back to Term 3 at Jandowae Kindy! We have recently been exploring changes in season in relation to the Earth and sun. With this has come an interest in learning about space! After reading books and watching videos about the solar system, Zavier told me, “We live on the crust of the Earth.” Oliver said, “It is too hot to live on Mars, you would burn.” After thinking more carefully about Planet Earth, we discovered that Earth is home to so many living species both on the land and in our oceans.

When we got talking about different seasons, Alice told us about a friend who lives in Denmark where it snows at Christmas time. After discovering

where Denmark was on the globe, we discussed d i f f e r e n t methods of transport. Can you get there by boat, car or an aeroplane? “You could use a submarine,” said one little voice. A p p a r e n t l y , you can get to China by boat! The children were using this learning in their play when they made maps to track where they were going to fly their aeroplane.

We are very excited to see our broccoli, carrots and lettuce growing! We should also have snow peas and radish growing soon. Stay tuned for next month’s edition as we build on our knowledge about space and in particular planet Earth!

Kindy KapersThe Jandowae Trail Bike Ride was once again a very successful fundraiser and I would like to extend a huge thank-you to Mandy, Sharyn and Sarah for organising the catering and volunteers. Thank-you goes to the parents and grandparents who also helped out. I noticed people who volunteered despite not having children at either Kindy or school and who have nothing to do with bikes. Your help was greatly appreciated. I heard great reports about the tracks for the different age and skill levels. Any money raised will be shared between the Kindy and the Jandowae School P&C and will go toward equipment for the local children.

The official opening of the Kindy was held on the 27th of July at the Kindergarten. Whilst researching when the Kindy opened, I was surprised at the many locations and forms that Kindergarten had taken over the years. Thank-you to Jocelyn Martin for helping to open the Kindy. The kids enjoyed having their faces painted by Celeste; a huge effort, thanks Celeste! The variety of morning-tea provided by the parents was fantastic (but not the day to start a diet). Thanks to Kelly, Courtney and Connie for setting up the Kindy and the memorabilia. We have a new “name” sign at Kindy; thanks to Red Clark for organising and installing it! All past and present attendees of the kindergarten were invited to attend and it was great to see some local faces whose children have also attended our Kindy. I am sure that everyone enjoyed their morning. Once again, I would like to thank the 2012 committee, lead by Kate Haig, for securing the funding and the 2013 Committee for enabling the building of the Kindy. The building sub-committee had many challenges during the project and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Jill Alexander and Annie Cusack for persevering and making the building a reality.

A representative from C&K has advised us that our application is next to be assessed, so hopefully I will have some news in this regard in the coming months. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Chris Nelson for all the work she does not only having submitted this application twice, but for all the day to day work that is never too much trouble. Hopefully, Chris, it will not need to be submitted again!

We are still working on our landscaping at Kindy and any donations of native plants and shrubs would be greatly appreciated.

“Like” our Jandowae Kindy noticeboard page on Facebook for regular updates on Kindy events and activities. Until next Month.

Group A NewsA big welcome to Mitchell Rennick and his family. Mitch has begun attending Monday Kindy this term.

Story time, in whichever form (books, puppets, felt characters), is our favourite session. We often have it two or even three times a day. This passion we believe was ignited from our own rich childhoods, where the memories of our parents reading to us are some of the warmest and most vivid. I think we all have ‘favourite’ childhood books in which we love sharing with children as adults. Story time at Kindy takes us on many wonderful learning adventures. We learn how to handle books, engage with print, build knowledge about an array of topics, learn about new concepts, practice language and build our vocabulary. Books take us on a journey where we can become so engrossed that we forget where we are (reduces stress and anxiety), we build concentrat ion ability and curiosity! We could go on and on. Our job however, is to build children’s love of books to set them up on the right literacy path before they enter more formal instruction at school.

We strive to connect children to the stories we have read during their play. Our recent editions to our ‘Outdoor Bush-Mud Kitchen’ are supporting children to re-visit stories and engage in further explorations. Last week, we read the renowned ‘Wombat Stew’ written by Mem Fox. After reading this book, the children created recipes based on natural food objects found in our gardens and made a wonderful muddy mess. We have further explored literacy and mathematical concepts during cooking adventures such as reading lists and measuring ingredients which all came about from reading this text.

We are also about to introduce children to their first ‘author study’ as we merge close to Book Week. The early childhood author we will explore is the talented Pamela Allen, who has written many award winning early childhood titles. We hope to have our children begin developing their own books very soon!

Education

Jandowae Prep - 10 State SchoolOur semester two has commenced at a brisk pace to match the weather. We welcome Mr Scott Bach, who becomes our Head of Department, replacing Alan Conroy who has retired and completed a great job with our school. Ms Whitbread joins our Early Years team replacing Mrs Woollett, who has taken leave this semester while Mr Doogan commences with us in a number of roles – secondary science, school SWPBS, behaviour management and classroom support. Ms Payne joins our teaching team in year one and brings some excellent learning strategies with her - soundwaves, IT innovations and behaviour walls to name a few.

This term has more “performance” excitement following on from our marvellous choral win at the district eisteddfod last term – Mrs Bartlett has commenced a “Jandowae’s Got Talent” program and students have responded with both solo and group nominations. The finals will be conducted in the last week of term.

Sport is highlighted in term three with our athletics carnival in week three along with our “Active After School Sport” program that is focusing on cricket and “hot shots” tennis this term. Our school also produced a regional

sportsman – we are all proud of Dean Wenhem who has just completed cross-country at State Level. Our school is currently investigating the traditional view of introducing a weekly sports day for 2015. Another popular Jandowae sport being supported and developed by the NRL with Mr Grant Bignell as the Game Development Officer in the coming weeks is backyard footy. There will be both skill and social development taking place.

Another exciting development at school is the work our P&C are doing to provide our students with latest technology. We are endeavouring to utilise iPad technology to assist our teachers in their classrooms. Our staff are currently completing a series of after school workshops for both iPads and Smartboards which will support their teaching and learning methods.

Mrs Duncan has prepared a series of excursions for our students to participate in this semester in our Gateway Program. These excursions will allow students to interact with various agribusiness careers while also seeing some historical milestones with agriculture.

In closing, our school is preparing for the “Flying Start” initiative as the current year six students

join our high school in 2015. The year seven students will also become part of the secondary school as our year eight students. Our school has increased its numbers, classrooms have become very engaging and our school wide positive behaviour support framework is now striving for the next level of recognition – our school is ‘growing’ students to appreciate and learn values of learning, respect, responsibility and working safely.

Competition

The Sound of Music is the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein and has become one of the worlds most loved musicals.

When Maria (Shannon Gralow) proves too high-spirited for life in a convent, she is sent to be the governess for the seven children of a widowed naval commander, Captain Von Trapp (Russell Reynolds).

Her close relationship with the children and her generous nature gradually captures the heart of the Captain but the happiness of their marriage is cut short but Austria’s invasion by the Nazi’s who demand the Captain’s immediate return to service in their navy.

This classic tale is loved for the many songs that bring the show to life, including Climb Every Mountain, Do-re-mi, My Favorite Things, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, So Long, Farewell and The Sound of Music.

Families Trees that Turn into ForestsI know I suggested last month that this column would be about the sawmill on the Washpool. I may have even made another suggestion some months earlier that I would write about it next, as well. But due to certain circumstances I am at this time unable to write on the subject. I do have a good reason. I never asked the man with all the answers about the sawmill to share some of them with me.

No more promises!

So, on another tack altogether. Let’s look a family tree, or to be more precise, the Brazier family tree, which it seems as I investigate wider and deeper, is rapidly turning into a forest of trees.

I had the good fortune this last week to spend a few hours with a relation I never even suspected existed. He happened to be at the Newsagency one day and mentioned he was related to the Braziers. So are a lot of other folks, it would seem; with names that are far removed from Brazier. Names such as McGregor, Simonson, McDonald, Abbey, Mills and Barrat, and that’s only the generation of the 1890s.

But this gentleman stirred up some latent desire in a few people that he and I should meet. Which I should add, was my good fortune. We enjoyed a chat, looked through some names on a list he had, and tried to find them on my longer list, and enjoyed a cuppa by the boat ramp at the town dam.

His great grandfather was a Brazier, of the Boondooma and Durong breed. My grandfather spent some time out that way as well as a youngster.

But in 1878, Lizzie Brazier moved her brood into Jondowie, from Boondooma. This was after her husband William was killed when he fell off a dray in Dalby. My grandfather, William, (he’s only the second in a line of Williams) witnessed the accident and was first on the scene. He was 18 at the time.

Lizzie eventually bought the house block that was

named King’s Forest. Graham Pfingst owns it now and until recently farmed it. Lizzie must have been a determined lady, and I guess her life made her that way.

She left her home in England and spent the 106 days it took to get to Moreton Bay on the good ship “General Hewitt”. Bad weather set in when they arrived in the bay and they were forced to stay an extra week on board, before they could transfer to a smaller craft and finally disembark.

I whinge about the 14 hours Josie and I spend on board a plane from Brisbane to Los Angeles. I’m not sure how I would have handled Lizzie and William’s adventure. They had with them a married daughter and her husband and 4 children. My grandfather was less than 2 years old and actually learned to walk on board the ship.

There were 16 deaths on the trip and 3 births. I should think on that next time we fly out of Brisbane.

So, the Brazier family made Jondowie their home. They branched out from here; scattered may be a more apt term. They are certainly from everywhere else these days, including London and Jersey City, New Jersey. I suggested to our youngest daughter that she should take a short trip north from London and see if she could find any rellies in the Cambridgshire area. She was, however a lot less than interested, thinking she has more than enough relations around here already. If only she knew what I now know...

In 1878, Jondowie wouldn’t have been much of a township. We know the Northern Downs Inn had been built in 1866. I guess other shops followed the demand. The Muholland family seemed to have been the main builders of shops in the early years of the 20th century. They built the Pink Pub, and the shop directly across George Street, which began as

a garage. They built the sawmill on Hickey Street, as well.

However, names and facts from earlier times are difficult to find. There was a hotel called the Commercial where the Jandowae (Bottom) Hotel now stands. It was burned down and the Kowitz family from Darr Creek Sawmill built the present hotel. They also built the hall at Jimbour, which began life as a skating rink and then became the Cremourne Picture Theatre. It was situated over the lane behind the Hotel, here in town. Laurie Knight and his mother ran the show. It changed its address during the fifties.

The present Exchange Hotel is the second one on that site as well. Its predecessor suffered the same fate as the Commercial. It was a lowset hotel, with no upstairs rooms.

But what of other shops? I believe there would have been some, but that knowledge has passed on with the residents of that time.

In two years time, Jandowae will celebrate its 150th birthday. Some more information of those early years may show up as people look for old photos and stories. It would be nice if we could do an “as it was then and as it is now slideshow”. As someone once said, you never never know if you never have a go.

Last months quiz answer: The names of first four familes: The Batemans, Stewarts, Murrays and Footes. Some of us are looking for more information on all of them.

This months quiz: What year was Jandowae declared a town? Clue: 150, 149, 148...

Next column...more history with a even a few facts thrown in. (John , if you read this... I may even find out more about Fairyland.)

The Young and HealthyWe have a lot of loyal customers whom I have come to know well, but sometimes when I go out, I realise that there are lots of people I don’t know at all. They are the young and healthy.

So what can their local pharmacy offer the healthy?

Jandowae Pharmacy stocks giftware for all ages and offers free gift-wrapping. People often remark that our range includes unique things that aren’t in every chain store. We can do basic watch repairs such as changing batteries and bands. You can also order trophies through us or buy locally produced Moy’s honey. We are a parcel point delivery location, so as more online retailers use parcel point, we will be your local collection point.

If and when you do get sick, your local pharmacy can offer free management advice ,which may include something they can do at home, referral to a doctor or a treatment plan using either the products a pharmacist is allowed to prescribe, or over-the-counter medicines.

You can also pick up and get advice on a number of things a well-organised home should keep, such as first aid supplies, sunscreen and insect repellent and day to day needs from soap to cosmetics to toilet paper.

You may not realise that we can safely dispose of your expired medicines. We also collect unwanted eye-glasses and frames for the Lions club to recycle overseas.

Also, because I live in the pharmacy, and am not out very much, it is easy to lend a hand out of hours as well because the pharmacy is a room in my home. There is an after-hours bell in the middle of the building or you can get my attention by ringing the numbers on the front door. If I am home, I will hear the home number or the mobile if I am out and about. Sometimes I can help with advice over the phone anyway. It is just one of the advantages of living in a country town.

Anti-Aging = The Amla Berry

Much of what I write is inspired by a brilliant blog called My World Organic, It has provided me with a wealth of knowledge when it comes to our health. This month they discussed the Amla Berry and after reading it I could not resist sharing some of the information with you. The Amla Berry is one of Mother Nature’s greatest hits; a multi-tasking, incredibly therapeutic fruit that we utilise in River Veda’s Replenish Anti-Aging skincare range as an important ingredient to assist the skin to glow and look youthful and vibrant.

Revered for thousands of years across Asia for its healing powers, Western scientists and medical experts have also taken greater note of the berry in recent years, thanks to a series of studies which have confirmed the extraordinary range of health benefits it delivers. As a skincare ingredient, for

example, Amla has been extensively clinically tested, with results showing it can assist the skin stay healthy and youthful looking.

Scientific Research

Recently, a series of scientific studies* have helped confirm what many across Asia have known for centuries – that the amla berry contains properties that can significantly benefit our health. Included amongst these studies are findings that:

• Amla extract possesses strong anti-oxidative properties and helps stimulate collagen, which is important in keeping the skin healthy and protecting against aging – http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378874108002961

• Amla extract can help protect the skin against the effects of UVB rays, another important element in terms of anti-aging and maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin – http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378874110005404

• Amla is an effective anti-inflammatory agent and anticoagulant – British Journal of Nutrition, Volume 110, Issue 12, December 2013, pp 2201-2206

• Amla seems to offer powerful cardiovascular benefits, helping to reduce levels of bad cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular disease – Kumar KS, Muller K. Medicinal plants from Nepal; II. Evaluation as inhibitors of lipid peroxidation in biological membranes. J Ethnopharmacol. 1999 Feb;64(2):135-9.

• Amla may help reduce blood sugar and therefore offer protection against diabetes - PubMed – http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21495900

List of Benefits

The evidence supporting the wondrous properties of the amla berry is compelling. Listed below is a list of the benefits which might be gained from amla, many of them supported by centuries of use by ayurvedic practitioners:

• Great for the skin and protects against ageing

• Excellent source of Vitamin C• Acts as an antioxidant• Nourishes the hair• Flushes out toxins, regulates elimination

and helps the urinary system• Supports healthy cardiovascular function• Aids with digestion and regulates stomach

acids• Increases alertness and the proper

functioning of the brain• Strengthens the eyes• Supports the immune system

This is quite a list!

* Disclaimer: Whilst the studies listed above indicate the potential medical benefits offered by the amla berry, it is important for anyone to follow the advice of their doctor when it comes to the treatment of disease. Amla should not be used in place of any drugs prescribed by your doctor or without consultation.

Domiciliary Care NewsAugust is an important month for us as we celebrate Seniors Week from the 18th to the 22nd of August.

Seniors Week aims to:

• improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing• facilitate community participation and activity by older people,

including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

• enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.

This year we are asking our talented local seniors to help contribute to our display. We invite clients and older community members alike to bring in their creations. Whether it is art, craft, woodwork or metalwork you have made, a beautiful photo you have taken or a poem you have written; anything that shows off the talent and skills of our wonderful seniors. These items will be put on display at the Cultural Centre for Seniors week. Please drop off clearly named items for display to Ann Gooderham at our Domiciliary office before the 15th of August.

The celebrations for this week include a cards and craft morning followed by a free “senior celebration sausage sizzle” for the community hosted by the JDC Support Committee at our Day Centre on Thursday the 21st of August. In the spirit of enhancing community connections and inter-generational relationships we invite people of all ages to drop in for a sausage between 12pm and 1pm.

A morning of singing and activities is also planned for Tuesday the 19th of August at Taralga Retirement Village.

We have more exciting news for our Day Centre. We have secured a grant that will allow us to finish The Shed. This will see it lined and fitted out with foldout workbenches and seating. This grant will also allow us to provide some training to interested volunteers. With this in mind, I would like to invite blokes in the community who are interested in being involved in The Shed to come to an afternoon information session where we can discuss how to make this a great community project that benefits everyone involved. We will hold this on Friday the 22nd of August at 2:30pm in The Shed, which is located at the back of the Jandowae Domiciliary Care Day Centre on the corner of George and Market Streets.

The Support Committee AGM will be held on Wednesday the 13th of August

at the Day Centre commencing at 1pm. We welcome all interested people along to this meeting.

The next bus trip for August will be to Condamine, stopping for lunch at the famous Condamine Pub and travelling back through Kogan.

Changes to the way Aged Care is being funded and provided have now come into effect from the 1st of July. Here is a short excerpt from the My Aged Care website:

The ‘Let’s talk about changes to aged care’ campaign aims to encourage people to talk about aged care and the changes starting from July this year.

The changes include:

• More support to stay independent and in your own home and community, with more Home Care Packages to meet your needs.

• Older people will be asked to contribute to the costs of care, if they can afford to do so.

• Greater flexibility over how to pay for your accommodation in an aged care home.

• Transparent accommodation prices and services listed on the My Aged Care website.

• Centrelink will provide income testing for people receiving home care, and both income and asset testing for people receiving residential care.

You can find information about ‘changes to aged care’ and ‘planning for and talking about aged care’.

The sooner we all start talking about aged care and planning it, the better the outcome for older people, their families and carers.

The changes to aged care will give you more choice, more control, and more of the services you might need to help you stay in your own home for longer and remain independent.

If you would like to know more about these changes you can call My Aged Care 1800 200 422 or if you are able to go to the website www.myagedcare.gov.au this has excellent information that is relevant for older people and their families.

As always please feel free to contact us for any further information.

Ask OptomTomYour questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

In your Recent School Screenings, why did you include the Left Right Reversal Test? What has that got to do with Vision? The Left Right Test was designed to identify children who have difficulties in the recognition of object, letter, number and word reversals. Scores can be compared to those of children of the same age, providing an accurate indication of performance compared to peers.

While this test does not measure the important skill of being able to see things (visual acuity), it does provide invaluable information regarding the brain’s ability to process visual information. Deficiencies in these skills have been linked to problems with learning to read and to underachievement at school.

In my opinion, the Jordan Left Right Reversals test is an effective screening tool to assist in the early detection of learning disabilities. It is certainly a worthy inclusion in any school based screening and is an important part of my comprehensive vision assessment.

In Loving Memory of

Violet Jean HawtonO ur Mum, Violet Jean Hawton

was born on the 28th of November 1927 at the Oakey Hospital. She was the second child of William and Violet Bormann (nee Hodges). Her brothers were Edgar and Don, and sisters Lorna, Daphne, Betty and Doreen. Her earliest memories were of helping raise her siblings and working very hard doing farm chores. Her Dad worked at the saw mill and her Mum did share farming. She went to school at Silverlea and Cambooya and various other places where the family moved to work. After she left home she worked at the hotel in Jandowae cooking and cleaning.

She met our dad, Stanley William Hawton, and they were married on the 20th December 1947. They had five children: Sylvia, Margaret, David, Gloria and Peter. Dad passed away on 10th September 1975. Mum and Dad had moved into the railway house when Sylvia was only a baby. Mum continued to live there after Dad passed on and it was her home for over 60 years.

As well as her home duties, Mum had various jobs including cleaning houses and child-minding for many families in Jandowae. Some of those families were the Camerons, Erzetics and Bassingthwaites.

She was a nurse to Dad, Grandma Hawton, her brother Edgar, sister-in-law Daisy, and brother-in-law Eric when they were very ill. The attending doctors always praised how well she looked after them.

She volunteered to help on many occasions with activities like church cleaning and helping with organising bingo and hoy mornings.

She enjoyed going to the races with Daisy and Eric.

As children, we may not have had that many possessions, but we always had clean clothes and

yummy food that Mum always took the time to provide. She would work all day for other people then come home and do all her own housework.

Mum was very proud of us all and whatever we achieved. She was always there to support us. She enjoyed spending time with all her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren too. Each and every one of us will have many memories of times spent with her.

Mum loved her garden and was very proud about how she took care of it. When she could no longer do it, she supervised its care very thoroughly. Everyone admired it. It was indeed a wonderful park land. She would sneak extra water onto it when the restrictions were on. People were amazed how good it looked then.

Through all the years she lived alone, Mum was very independent and did so much for herself. She was very proud of her tool shed with every tool in it you could ever want.

She was a very organised and tidy person; very house proud. Everything she got she worked very hard for, and cherished all her possessions and took such great care with everything.

She was a great cook, whether it was cooking her favourite yellow belly or cakes or Christmas puddings, which she still mixed up last Christmas. She loved cooking up people’s favourite foods. When any of the family were coming to stay, she would have everything done up and food bought, with things done the way they liked. She put so much effort in to making the time special.

She was a good friend too and missed those who passed away or moved away. She has always been well respected by many people around Jandowae and district.

Mum was a great letter writer and would produce pages and pages of local news for those of us she wrote to; some of us, weekly. As well, her letters always included her views on sport or current affairs. Tiger Woods was her favourite golfer. She would sit up late watching the golf on TV or lie in bed all night listening to the radio, when the Australians were playing cricket matches overseas. She loved watching TV and listening to the radio and knitting and

crocheting and doing her word books. She also loved playing cards with whoever came to visit. Her favourite game was Frustration and she always scored the game.

For the last few years there have been some very special people who have helped Mum out in many different ways, some who are still living here in the town and others who have moved away. You know who you are and on behalf of Mum and all the family a very big thanks goes to you.

Right up to the end she was mentally very alert and was frustrated when her body, especially her legs, just didn’t let her do what she wanted to do. She was able to look after herself until Easter this year when her ill health became apparent. She was lovingly cared for by Sylvia, Nev and family in Sylvia’s home until she was admitted to Toowoomba General Hospital in late May. She was seriously ill and into palliative care in June, where she remained until she passed away peacefully at 7:40 pm on Wednesday 18 June.

She is much loved and will be deeply missed by all her family and friends and others who knew her.

Gloria Binney

One Thing You Should Do When You ‘Settle Down’By You’ve tied the knot, bought the house, got the family car, baby number one is on the way and you have settled into married life. But have you considered organising life insurance to allow for all these factors in your life? Now that it’s not just you anymore, you need to ensure your loved ones will be looked after if you’re no longer there. Here are some things to consider when choosing or adjusting your life insurance policy:

Does your life insurance cover your debt?

Ensuring your house mortgage, car loan, credit card debt are covered under your policy is the first step to safeguarding your family from inheriting your debt and not having the home or car repossessed.

What about child care and education?

Everyone wants the best possible education for their children but this can be expensive and if you’re not there as the main ‘bread winner’ to support their learning this can add extra strain on the household. Setting up your life insurance properly could see a payout to meet the ever growing cost of your child’s learning and education, guaranteeing them the best possible opportunities.

How to get the best deal

We’ve all seen the daytime television commercials for cheap life insurance but how does it compare to others? Cheapest is not always the best. Do your homework and compare the deals because simple is not always cheaper, the cover may be inadequate or, worse still, may not pay out when you or your family need it most. It’s best to get advice on how premiums are calculated so you know you’re not going to be paying more than you need to over time.

The best advice is to seek advice specific for your situation. Be prepared and talk through your options. Don’t leave it until it’s too late. Isn’t your family the most important thing in the world?

Jandowae and District Garden Club Inc.The next meeting of the Garden Club is on Tuesday 26 August at the Jandowae Library Reading Room. Helen Young from Proston will have her plants for sale. Please bring lunch to share, a mug and a flower for the Flower Competition. Also remember to bring a soil and water sample to be pH tested.

In June, we travelled to Warra and met in the garden of Rob and Trish Henderson. We were able to sit in the sun on the front lawn where we were sheltered from the cool June wind. Paul and Olive Winter from Dalby were our nursery people. Paul, who trades as Landscaping and Natural Design, gave us a talk on how the pH profile of our garden soil and water is so important to the vigorous growth of our plants. He explained the pH scale and what we can do to alter the pH levels in our soil. Paul and Olive donated a pH Tester to the Garden Club so that members can bring a soil or water sample to our meetings and get it tested. Thank you for this thoughtful gift. It will be well used I’m sure.

To say that Rob and Trish’s garden is unique is an understatement. It is obvious they have spent many hours of thought and work to get the garden looking as it is today. Over many years Trish has collected many ‘old’ items and strategically placed them in her garden with striking visual effect.

Features include:• plants are grown in several old

wheelbarrows, old wash tubs, truck tyre rims, inside bowls of washing machines and old ‘anything’ to name a few of the variety of items Trish has used to put a plant in

• an old ladder hangs from the underside of the back patio with pots hanging below

• another ladder sits at the edge of the large cemented back patio with succulents draped over the rungs

• an old crown stove peeks out of the shrubbery as it holds many different pot

plants• old broken wooden farm gates are placed in

several places with one holding old farming tools

• there are pot plants hanging in all the larger trees

• an old bag trolley on the front veranda of the house holds several pots

• a bicycle at the front corner post holds 2 flowering pots in its front basket

• several old chairs and bench seats either have pot plants sitting on them or you can just take a rest

• a bird feeder made from old farm ‘junk’ sits close to the patio at the back of the house under a large melaleuca with some ‘happy family’ birds enjoying the food left for them

• an abandoned ‘dog house’ sits at the garage garden entrance and has an ornamental ‘chook’ family using it

• throughout the garden are well established clumps of grey beard that appear at all levels - some are in pots, some grows on tree branches, another clump covers an old stool, another clump encloses a small disused bird cage

• the lush front lawn is watched over by 2 birds made of old miner’s picks, shovels, a hay rack and other metal bits and pieces

Large well established trees form the perimeter on the northern and western sides of the front garden. These include a jacaranda, a yellow flowering gum, a large pepper tree, a book leaf pine, jasmine, a leopardwood tree, melaleucas and bottlebrushes as well as a flowering bougainvillea. A small pomegranate with fruit sits close by. All these trees have pots or are underplanted with a wide variety of bromeliads, succulents, geraniums, ribbon plants, clivias, jade bushes, wandering dew, vincas, hibiscus, asparagus, ferns, petunias ready to flower, agapanthus, agaves and a large pony tail palm to name a few. Many varieties of ground cover

plants fill in spaces. Ornaments and solar lights are scattered throughout the garden ready to catch the viewer’s eye. Imagine all of this amongst Trish’s relics and you can see what added effect these give to the garden.

Relatively new shrubs such as white duranta, geraniums and a bottlebrush thrive on the eastern front fence. This area leads into the eastern side of the house where very little sun is had. Trish has established an attractive pebble area with strategically placed bricks to form a large square, a large circle and many smaller squares to emulate pavers. With many shrubs and more relics and plants this is all very eye-catching indeed.

Adjacent to the carport at the back of the house is a bird aviary housing two happy Quarrion. An old trough sits in front of here where a large variety of herbs grow. A knapsack, a rusty dingo trap and other old farm tools hang next to the birdcage from an old gate attached to the carport wall. In front of this a flowering pig face, a murraya, mother-in-law tongue and several other cacti grow in a small garden bed.

Lunch on the day was served on the large cemented patio at the back of the house. This area has pots hanging from the rafters, more pots on the back steps and also on the patio itself. An old washbasin with a corrugated backing wall sits at the end of the patio.

Thank you to Rob and Trish for sharing their lovely garden with us.

Our September meeting will be our AGM. All nominations for President, Secretary, Treasurer and Management Committee are to be in the hands of the current Secretary by the close of the August meeting as set out in our Rules of Incorporation.

The Western Downs Under 10 35kg team travelled to St George this year, for the Annual Zone 5 Carnival.

Wynnum continued their dominance of the last few years to again win the carnival undefeated with a well drilled side.

The Western Downs Wild Dogs suffered a narrow loss against the hosts, Balonne Barwon, after conceding a try in the last seconds of a hard fought game. The local derby against Roma was also a thrilling game with Roma managing to hold off a strong finish from the Wild Dogs to also beat our boys by 2 points.

Western Downs recorded a good win in another tough game against Central Downs and also went on to defeat McIntyre, Charleville and Cunnamulla.

The Wild Dogs finished fourth out of the eight teams competing with all our players improving during the week especially in their defensive game. More importantly, the boys have returned home to lift the standard of the local competition with knowledge gained from a week of intensive football against teams from other regions.

The team trophies went to Lachlan Smith, Caleb Colls and Brayden Doherty for Best Back, Best Forward, Most Improved respectively, while Harry Raff tackled strongly in the East verses West game.

With 5 players of the 15 still eligible for Under 10s next year, it was a good result for the boys who are sure to play more representative Rugby League for Western Downs.
