    I. Interim Narrative Report:Janakalyan, with the support of Deshpande Foundation, initiated an innovationintegrated inspiring intervention in Gadag district of North Karnataka with thesmall & marginal farmers of tail end of Malaprabha Irrigation Project to addresstwo extremes of water availability. The intervention started in April 2010 invillages with 10 farmers which have now spread across 3 taluks of Gadag andDharwad districts. This report is prepared at the end of 3rd quarter of 2nd yearto document the progress during the reporting period (October - December2011).

    A. Project Implementation:

    The 3rd

cycle of grant commenced from October 2011 for 6 months and theactivities implemented during the October-December 2011 period is briefed inthis document. The budget lines have been used to report the activities in thesubsequent paragraphs.

    1. Please describe the project activities that have been carried out todateThe activities those were completed during the reporting period are not manybut are very important to make the project successful; these are described inthe following sections of the report in brief.

1.1.Project Concept Orientation to the new villages:In addition to the existing project villages, Janakalyan field team extendedtheir extension services to other villages of these taluks in addition toNavalagund taluk of Dharwad district; thereby, Janakalyan has nowreached its activities in 3rd taluk in 2nd district of Sandbox.

1.2. Selection of eligible farmers for water harvesting structures:The selection of farmers for excavation of water harvesting structures aredone in 2 stages - 1) Technical Feasibility by visiting the site proposed forexcavation of the water harvesting structure and 2) Social Feasibility byvisiting the house of the farmer to assess the interest of the family

members and their willingness to participate in all activities under theproject.

1.2.1 Technical Feasibility: Technical feasibility of the siteproposed for excavation of the water harvesting structure is assessed byour technical experts by visiting the site along with the farmer. Whileassessing the site, we look at many angles of the site such as watershedarea, soil condition, catchment area, etc.

Learning Analysis: After visiting about 5 water harvesting structures ofdifferent size and age, the farmers had a sharing session amongthemselves facilitated by Sri Prasen Raptan, Executive Director ofJanakalyan in its Samarthya Soudha. The facilitator asked a simple questionto list out the activities that they have seen in each of these tanks theyvisited and the farmers listed the following activities/ items in each farm-

    1. Peaceful healthy environment2. Big and wide water harvesting structures3. Wide range of vegetables4. Paddy5. Sorghum6. Fish in the tank7. Poultry8. Fruit yielding trees9. Cows, Goat & Sheep Rearing10. Firewood (forest) species11. Biomass generating trees12. Green manures13. Compost pit14. Vermicompost pit15. Crops grown using the organic fertilizer16. Gobar Gas Unit to recycle cow dung17. Recycling of poultry manure as fish feed18. Fodder cultivation19. Duck rearing20. Farm House21. Energy saving water lifting devices such as pedal pump & by gravity

    22. Hard and sincere working farmers

Each of these productive units provides some income either on daily, fortnightly, monthly, seasonal and annual basis. When asked which arethose activities/ items those cannot be implemented in Gadag environment/context, the farmers replied that everything out of the list above can beimplemented in our Gadag context too provided the farmers make up theirminds. It was further analyzed the income of these farmers based on the

inputs provided by the Sindhanur farmers whom the Gadag farmers visited,it is found that each of them are earning more than Rs.750 per day from allthese productive units. They realized that they can also earn same amountwhich would amount about Rs.20000-25000 per month, which agovernment employee may not earn.

1.4 Excavation of water harvesting structures:

About 7 water harvesting structures were excavated till last quarter sinceinception of the project in April 2011 while no new structure has beenexcavated during the current reporting period due to various reasons asstated below-1) Onset of monsoon in the project villages2) Standing crops in the land where such structures to be excavated3) The available funds invested in crops by the farmers and thus do not

have funds to invest for excavation of the structures

    4) No vacant land to shift the excavated earth from the structures.1.5 Demonstration of effective water usage methods:

The belief of Janakalyan team to implement this program are-1. If water is provided to the farmers, rest they would take care

    themselves

    2. Like a house to a city-dweller, water harvesting structure is equallyimportant to a famer.3. Cost sharing brings ownership among the participating farmers and

    sustainability to the initiative.

With these beliefs, Janakalyan initiated the interventions in Malaprabha Tailend and thus the focus was only on creation of water harvesting structureto provide water and nothing else with cost sharing approach. However, farmers required some sort of orientation and exposure to variousproductive units to make effective use of scarce resources like land & waterin order to enhance productivity and in turn the livelihood security. The

cropping pattern that is seen with these set of farmers during the year areas under-Sl.No.

1.6 Series of training to the new farmers on water-savingtechnologies and diversified farming system:

Though, it was planned to conduct a series of training for the participatingfarmers throughout the year, due to want of approval the same could benot completed in time even though some of these planned activities werevery important for previous quarter. However, during the reporting period, the team has conducted few rounds of training for the participatingfarmers including the old set of 10 farmers. The training held during thereporting period was on water management techniques, vegetablecultivation, various productive units of Intensified Integrated FarmingSystem, etc. The farmers as well as farm-women were involved in theseset of training. Some of the farmers adopted the practices discussed inthese training while others promised but failed in translating these onto

the ground. The major reason was the time as the season for the same wasalready over this year and therefore they promised to practice these innext crop year.

1.7 Year long on-farm technical support to the participating farmers bythe team and also by the technical persons: Though on-farm technical support was provided by our field teamthroughout the year for all field crops but the plan of inviting the externalexperts for critical support remained incomplete during the crop season forthe want of approval; however, during the present quarter, we couldcomplete 2 visits to guide the farmers about vegetable crops and treeplantation but again the impact was not very good as it was off season.

Total 7 water harvestingstructures have beenexcavated with the newHitachi which are beingused by the farmers toharvest water; no new tanksin the reporting period

3 Increase in productivity by about 20%than that of current productivitythrough diversification of croppingpattern through this intervention with

    the participating farmers

This could be assessed onlyat the end of season againstthe baseline; baselinealready collected and the

farmer-wise crop details arecollected by the field teamregularly

4 Generating funds from other sources(revenue generation through Hitachi)to sustain tank excavation program inthe sandbox

About 141.9 hours of workshave been done to generatethe operational cost of theHitachi; due to off-season,the Hitachi was idlethroughout the 3rd quarter

    2. Please compare your actual project achievements to date to thespecific goal(s) and outcomes described in your proposal. 1 More than 100 Farmersconvinced about waterharvesting concept

About 111 farmers have applied forwater harvesting structure by payingRs.100 each towards the applicationform; additional 41 farmers have beenreached during the 2nd quarter also

along with an extension of the projectarea to Navalagunda taluk too.Process of reaching out more andmore new farmers are on and the fieldteam is putting sincere efforts in thisregards

2 Purchasing one newHitachi (EX-70) toexcavate tanks in thesandbox

Purchased Tata Hitachi EX-70immediately after receiving the grantwith an investment of Rs.25.25 lakh

    3 Excavation of 100

irrigation tanks in 3 yearswith administrativesupport from DF

About 7 tanks have already been

excavated with an investment ofRs.432,800/- in these 2 quarters withmany limitations; 3rd quarter was idle

4 Mobilizing (50%) farmersshare to the tune ofRs.35,00,000 in 3 years

It was planned to mobilize 50%farmers share towards excavationwhile we have achieved 70% till date(Rs.302,300/- out of Rs.432,800/-)

The team is happy about the achievement at the end of 3rd quarter but onlyissue is that the Hitachi use is not as efficient as it was planned; though, themachine could be used even with small-little rainfall but the farmers remain

engaged in farm activities and also because of the standing crops in the land, they are reluctant to take up any works during this period. Even, the revenuegeneration activities could also not been able to take up due to same reason. However, the maintenance and operator cost is still incurred during thisperiod.
