Personal Philosophy
• As a future University of Mary graduate of the Department of Education it will be my pleasure to demonstrate professionalism and honor within our schools. I will take responsibility for student learning, demonstrate strong pedagogical content knowledge, and display professional characteristics.
Mission Philosophy • Student learning will be dependent on me and reflect on my teaching career. In order to be successful in
this area I must use a variety of student assessment methods, develop learning environments that improve student learning, and reflect on teaching practices to improve student learning. By using these three tactics I will be able to not only improve my skills, but I will also be able to better help my students succeed in education.
• Working within the school systems it will be important that I demonstrate strong pedagogical content. I
can do this by effectively teaching the content in their discipline, using a variety of instructional strategies, and by adapting instruction to meet the individual needs of students. Every student who steps foot into my classroom will have his or her own unique learning style. The three main types of learning styles which students fall under are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. As young children and adults we all learn by using our senses to gain and process information. Visual learners benefit from illustrations and presentations that use color. Students who have this learning style like to see what he or she is learning. Auditory learners remember by verbalizing lessons or talking through the content. Students will sit where they can hear the teacher, but it is not important that he or she sees what is on the board. The last category is kinesthetic learners. Activities, movement, gestures, and field trips are all ways under which kinesthetic learners grasp concepts the best. During the first week of school it will be highly valuable to find out which learning style each of my students has. By giving a simple quiz on learning styles I can better understand and identify with the different learners within my classroom.
• As a teacher I will need to demonstrate strong professional characteristics by displaying strong
communication skills, displaying strong instructional planning skills, by fostering relationships with school colleagues, parents, and community agencies to support student learning, and by engaging in and supporting appropriate professional practices. I know there is always room for improvement, and it will be my job to continue to grow and shape these skills throughout my teaching career.

Guidance Policy • When managing my classroom I will use high teacher control. I believe that in order
to have good behavior in the classroom a teacher must have strong classroom management skills. The Kounin Effective Momentum Model supports my previous statement in that children need clarity and firmness in the classroom. Jacob Kounin’s research shows that teacher intervention has a ripple effect among students. When I give praise or remarks intended to stop behavior, I want not only the recipient to be affected but also those who witness the event. To prevent problems from arising I will have smooth transitions and maintain momentum throughout daily activities. I will maintain momentum through the use of boredom control, timers, short lessons, and assigning roles to students. I will assign meaningful jobs to students in order to draw focus to accountability and responsibility.
• As an educator I want my students to feel as though the classroom is “our”
classroom. It is important to have a community of learners who work together toward success. By implementing the Kounin Effective Momentum Model I will be able to heavily focus on classroom learning and less on classroom discipline problems. When unexpected interruptions occur I will be able to manage behavior while keeping a focus on the lesson. With the use of overlapping I will be able to deal with disruptive behavior while lessons are ongoing. When managing my classroom I want to acquire with-it-ness. It is important to have an instinctive feel for situations that are going on within the classroom. It will be my job to try to prevent problems before they arise.

4 Week Unit Plan
Week One Demonstrate and help children understand expectations. Read The Little School Bus.
Students will draw a self portrait with their name. The teacher will conduct an assessment of the student’s entry level skills of writing name and drawing with details.
Go over routines and procedures: sign in, arrival, bathroom, carpet time, lining up, hallway, cafeteria, quiet signal, dismissal, transitions, and morning welcoming.
Week Two Read Miss Bindergarten Goes on a Field Trip and talk about why we have rules. Discuss citizenship and oral communication.
Group discussion about rules and why we have them at school (beginning of our classroom rules). Brainstorm words about how you feel.
Draw a picture that illustrates acts of a good citizen. Create a class graphic organizer to detail information.
Week Three Read Plaidypus Lost and discuss sequential order and rhyming words.
Provide groups with words, and ask students to identify the words that rhyme and the ones that do not.
Print the lines on separate sentence strips. Read them aloud and ask students to help you arrange them in the correct order.
Week Four Read Here are my Hands and focus on Phonemic Awareness and rhyming.
Make flash cards for P, Q, R, S, T and review sounds and names of letters A-T.
Cover properties of materials. Observe, measure, and predict.

Safety Checklist
• All electrical outlets are covered. Safety plugs do not fit into a choke tube.
• Furniture and equipment are in good repair.
• Tables and chairs are not staked while children are present.
• Window cords are tied up/out of reach to prevent strangulation.
• Cleaning products are labeled and stored in their original containers (locked in cabinets or places out of reach of children).
• Emergency procedures/map are posted for fire and tornado in classroom (practice drills each month).
• There is a smoke detector system, alarm, or sprinkles in working order in classroom.
• Fire extinguishers are accessible.
• First aid kit is available in each room and appropriately stocked.
Safety Checklist • Check for recalled toys.
• All art supplies state they conform to ASTM D 4236 or have the “AP” seal from the ACMI.
• Heavy toys/items are stored on lowest shelf.
• Climbing equipment indoors is 18” or lower in height.
• Floors are kept dry and there are no slippery throw rugs. Toys are picked up after use to prevent tripping/falls.
• There is a working telephone easily accessible and parents and other emergency numbers are up-to-date and posted by the phone.
• Furniture is arranged to provide optimal supervision and to allow for clear exits in case of an emergency.
• Electrical cords on equipment and appliances are not frayed; cords are secured and/or out of children’s reach.
• There are no indoor poisonous plants.
• An operating flashlight is available for use in case there is a power failure.
