The life of Joe Sulit, popular radio broadcaster from CKJS 810 and host long time host of Good Morning Philippines was celebrated by the Filipino community at two lamay nights at the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Manitoba. Joe Sulit also enjoyed a loyal following in his monthly "Gabay Sa Buhay" column in the Filipino Journal during the late 80's to the mid 90's. "Kuya Joe" will be forever remembered for his commitment and devotion to ethnic media and his love for the Filipino community in Winnipeg.

4M folks joined the Sinulog Festival

The police had an estimation of 4Million folks who joined both the church

activities and the parade of the Sinulog Festival.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama applauded the organizers and volunteers of the festival for making it “awesome, majestic and superb.”

Surprisingly, Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros noticed that this is the first time in the past 10 years that the Sinulog grand parade did not get rained on at all.

Ballesteros also agreed with the mayor’s assessment and said “their only problem was the strong wind, which made it difficult for many dancing contingents to manage their props.”

Police Regional Office Central Visayas Director Marcelo Garbo Jr. said “It was generally peaceful. No major incidents were reported.” He also confirmed that there were some problems with crowd control and petty crimes.”

Despite the celebration’s success, Rama said there are still areas that need to be improved. This includes widening the city’s sidewalks to prevent accidents. As for the peace and order situation, Rama said he is thankful that the people who joined the revelry behaved themselves.

Is Money and Materialism Evil?(On the Extrinsic Meaning of Love and Sharing that Christmas Symbolizes)

The three kings express and show their love for the baby Jesus Christ by presenting

him three respective gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrhh. It was obviously a material expression of the three kings' respect and love for the baby Jesus Christ.

Christmas Is Sharing, Sharing Means Sharing Material Things with Others

Christmas symbolizes and celebrates loving and sharing. Yes, that seems to be a universally accepted concept of Christmas. However, we should really be able to process that

concept to make it more realistic and specific. I mean, let's not be hypocrites; what's wrong with expressing the spirituality of love and sharing through materialism? After all, how else could we express our love to our loved ones? Isn't it with material things also? By providing for them their needs, isn't it a material action? And isn't it an expression of love? By providing them shelter—house with amenities—isn't this an expression of love and concern? When we give them gifts on Christmas, whether simple or expensive gifts—isn't

this an expression of love as well? When we spend money to be able to host a gathering at our homes, so we could invite loved ones and friends, isn't this an expression of love and sharing?

I think the problem lies in the notion that anything material is evil—which I clearly disagree with. While I acknowledge and agree that the true spirit of Christmas is loving and sharing, I remain firm in my stance that the best extrinsic application of these virtues remains to be through material things, and there's nothing evil or wrong about it. I think that everything boils down to responsibility, sincerity, and financial wisdom.

Responsible SpendingI mean, there's nothing wrong

with celebrating Christmas with our families and friends through gathering, partaking of foods, exchanging of gifts, and having fun; as long as we are able to do all these within the limits of our financial abilities and resources and being responsible in having fun (especially those who love drinking, and by 'drinking' I mean

"drinking alcoholic beverages"). This, I think, is the actual modern meaning of Christmas—in complement with the traditional concept of Christmas as "loving and sharing"—for, to reiterate—there's no other way to express and put into practice the "love and sharing" but by spending money and providing what our loved ones and friends really need.

Loving One’s Family Means Providing Material Needs

This concept extends also to the practicality of life itself. Yes, many parents say that the best "gift" that they could present their children with is love, but, come on, realistically, how could parents express this love? By working hard and smart to be able to provide their kids with good education, food, clothes, daily needs, etc. All these are material things, but these are not evil. Some will argue that quality time with our children is also an expression of love; but then again, how do you spend quality time with your children? Watch movies together, eat meals together, watch DVDs at home together, play together? Don't all these activities involve also spending? Of course, they do. So, there is really no escaping materialism when expressing love.

Removing the Stigma and Guilt Feeling

I am simply removing the stigma that many people feel about money and material things. They automatically associate materialism with evil and immorality, and that is what I find unfair and illogical.

We should stop the indoctrination of guilty feelings and hypocritical suggestions that anything material is evil.

If a person works hard and smart, then she gets to spend her earnings wisely and deserves to celebrate responsibly.

What's more important, I think, is the sincerity, frugality, and responsibility that should accompany the idea of loving and sharing that many people are holding in high esteem.

As in the song, "Give love on Christmas day..." But the question remains to be "How can you translate that love to make it realistic? By a kiss, by a hug, by sweet words? Of course, not;

these are not enough. We give love to friends and even strangers by sharing portions of the material things that we have, and to our loved ones by providing the things that they need—shelter/house, food/nourishment, school supplies, education / tuition fee and school allowance, little pleasures like TV, cable, computer, Internet, and other gadgets, etc. And there's nothing wrong about all these.

Non-material LoveI think the only non-material

way of expressing one’s love and kindness to others are the following: By saying only good words about them, by not gossiping about them; by letting them know directly, personally, and tactfully if you think they did something wrong (or shut your mouth if you don’t have the courage to tell them, or at least don’t badmouth them to others); by taking time to assist them with some errands (though this may be also material, if you have to spend gas). But, for the most part of it, expressing love and kindness to others involves material things, and let’s not be hypocritical and deny this; after all, there’s nothing wrong with this. Money, or materialism for that matter, is not evil.

At ang Pasko ang isang malaking halimbawa kung kalian nagiging mahalaga ang pera para maibahagi natin ang ating pagmamahal sa ating pamilya at ang pagiging mapagbigay sa ating kapwa tao.

Or, in Simple WordsWhile loving and sharing

may be the underlying spirit of Christmas, let's not demonize the material things that become indispensable and inevitable to be able to really express the virtues of love and sharing.

Winnipeg Jets Report

NHL Lockout is over and it's "All Systems Go!"

Get ready hockey fans! The lockout is over and the Winnipeg Jets will be

opening the 2012/13 NHL season at MTS Centre for a matinee game against the Ottawa Senators! The Jets are back in action and so is the Filipino Journal Jets Report!

The NHL and the NHLPA reached a memorandum of understanding in the wee hours of Sunday, January 6th that ended the 113-day long lockout. There will be a season after al. In this

year's case, it will be composed of a 48-game regular season and Winnipeg Jets fans including myself are excited to see hockey back at MTS Centre. Training camp for the Winnipeg Jets opened on Sunday with a practise open to the public at MTS Centre where over an 5,000 fans showed up to watch and enjoy free pop and popcorn.

After returning from the 2013 World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia, the Winnipeg Jets'

2012 first round draft pick, Mark Scheifele is at training camp and hoping to earn a spot on the team. Based on several reports during the short training camp, Scheifele will have 5 NHL games to prove himself or otherwise be sent back to junior with the Barrie Colts.

An apology issued by Jets' owners Mark Chipman, David Thompson and captain, Andrew Ladd to fans said, "We’d also like to offer a sincere apology for the delayed start to our 2012-13 season and wish to express our deep appreciation for your patience and understanding. Be assured we will do our best to earn your trust now and in the years ahead by striving to be the kind of team and organization that will make you proud to be a Winnipeg Jets fan."

The lock out is over and training camp is in full swing. We can't wait for the puck to drop on Saturday! Go Jets Go!

In memory and honour of our Gat Jose Rizal

Dr. Jose Rizal fought the oppressive colonizing Spaniards in the Philippines, Europe and in the street of the oppressors own country of Spain. He believed then before anyone else in Asia that freedom can be attained thru peaceful means. His writings and personal campaigns in Europe, Spain and the Philippines awakened the world and the Filipinos at the time and panicked the Spaniards who made a terrible mistake of turning Rizal into a martyr in the morning of December 30, 1896 that infuriated the Filipino people and took up arms and overthrow the foreign power. Every December 30th around the world the martyrdom is commemorated by the Knights of Rizal (KoR) and in the Philippines by the whole nation led by KoR and government officials.

In Winnipeg Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom was commemorated with two part events, a wreath laying event at Rizal’s memorial

bench at midday on the grounds of Chapel Lawn at 4000 Portage Avenue, organized by Deputy Chapter Commander and his Lady Rosabelle de Leon. The joint Commemoration and 2012 Youth Recognition Awards was held at PCCM with flower and candle offerings and by recognizing the success of the young Filipino adults that graduated from high school who graduated with honours having a GPA of 90% and above, and duly nominated by their high schools.

This year’s program reflected the very reason why KoR was organized and continues to flourish, the speakers messages spoke to the point.

I truly believe that you are only as good as the people you are surrounded by. For me, being here and standing in front of you tonight, is a significant result of this. When I was younger, I had a severe speech impediment. The

speech therapist told my parents, “there is nothing they could do, that I just had a significantly lower IQ level and thus will be delayed for my entire life”. Yet, here I am. I am a Queen’s university student, an International Baccalaureate Diploma graduate, the coordinator of several clubs and initiatives, and an aspiring doctor. The unconditional love and perseverance shown by my parents, my sister Monique, my teachers, and everybody else in my life, is what continues to inspire me to be the best person I can be. As shown by Jose Rizal, ambition and hard work is only meaningful with the intention of serving the greater good. We are gathered here today, not merely to recognize the hard work and dedication to our education shown by my peers and I, but to recognize the continuation of Jose Rizal’s torch; his philosophy in nurturing intelligence, leadership, and service within youth in order to better serve the future. (A short passage of Ms. Marie Carlin Sereneo’s touching response speech.)

In my brief research about the man, I have learned that one of his “philosophies in life” is directly in agreement with mine, and I’m sure most of yours – that is: if we delve into the past with its notable life experiences and learn from them, they will help shape our lives and the “personality of who we are and the nation we live in and have helped to create. If we don’t know our “Heritage”, that is, from where we’ve come, we probably will get lost in finding the better future we all seek.

His educational philosophy as we can expect from a person of so many professional accomplishments was that education is the foundation of society and a prerequisite for social progress. He felt that education in youth creates a desire to cultivate their intelligence.

From this educational philosophy espoused by the national hero of the Philippines, Dr. Jose Rizal, it is no wonder that we are gathered here this evening with the focus being “youth and education” by an organization that

has, as a part of its name, Rizal. (Mr. Larry Vickar’s speech, Mr. Vickar is the Owner and President of Vickar’s Community of Auto Dealerships a very good friend of the Knights of Rizal and the Filipino Community in Winnipeg and a very generous benefactor of the Filipino Community’s projects here and in the Philippines, and a long time supporter of Youth Recognition Awards.)

Though only 35 years at his demise, Rizal was already immortal in his pursuit of justice and liberty. He went to his death not knowing that in death, he would give birth to a new nation; but he did so as an example of necessary risk that must be taken to guarantee that such institutions are founded, defended, and perpetuated. Can there be any greater reason to live?

The story of the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. José Rizal, and his family, is representative of the courageous spirit and moral intellect, the sublime quality of leadership that makes possible the emergence of an independent nation from colonialized, disunited, or economically looted territories. Rizal’s life and works catalyzed anti-colonial politics in Asia during the latter years of the 19th Century. Dr. José Rizal is rightly referred to as “The First Filipino”. (Two paragraphs of Councillor Mike Pagtakhan’s speech, Councillor Mike is the Councillor for Point Douglas Ward of the City of Winnipeg, Canada)

The day was also capped with an announcement from Councilor

Mike Pagtakhan on the approval of KoR-W Rizal Memorial Committee’s project of installing a larger than life statue, of Dr. Jose Rizal in a highly visible location in Winnipeg. It was noted that the KoR-W Memorial Committee was successful in working with a residential developer and the City of Winnipeg to agree on locating the Dr. Jose Rizal statue in a prominent location in a new residential subdivision called Waterford Green. The said statue will be a 7 feet bronze statue of Dr. Jose Rizal mounted on a 5 feet cenotaph, and will be located in the City of Winnipeg right of way at the corner of Dr. Jose Rizal Way and Old Commonwealth Road. The statue could be us as early as the fall of 2014. The announcement also included the extension and road twinning of Dr. Jose Rizal Way all the way up to the new extension of the Chief Peguis Trail. The last part of the announcement was the naming of a neighbourhood green space at the corner of Sewa and Khalsa to Dr. Jose Rizal Park. We the Rizal Memorial Committee and the Knights of Rizal membership extend our heartfelt appreciations to Councilor Mike Pagtakhan, Councilor Devi Sharma, Councilor Ross Eadie, Mayor Sam Katz, the rest of the City of Winnipeg Council and their staff for their hard work and support for the above projects. A special note of gratitude also goes to Lombard North Developments for their generosity to cover the costs of production and installation of the statue, estimated to be approximately $225,000.00

Interesting Trivia - The Maori people believe that gentle pressing of noses signifies the mingling of the sacred breath of life.

More than 1.5 billion kiwifruits are exported from Tauranga every year.

"Haere Mai" (Welcome) to Tauranga, New Zealand, bustling port city of 121,000 people, a seaside resort with pristine beaches and an agricultural and timber centre of the North Island.

Tauranga is also the gateway to popular Rotorua, considered as the heart of the Maori culture. The name Tauranga comes from Maori word meaning "sheltered anchorage".

Just a short drive from the city centre is the Minden Lookout and Observation Deck where we have a panoramic view of Tauranga and its suburbs, the famous Mt. Maunganaui, the Bay of Plenty coast, and out to the sea over green orchards and farmlands, and rolling hill country.

Southeast of Tauranga is the town of Te Puke (means The Hill), the "kiwi capital of the world". Te Puke has thousands of acres of the woody vines grown on stout trellises heavy with the edible greenish-brown berries, the kiwifruits which are picked by large number of residents during April and May. A notable attraction in Te Puke is Kiwi 360 with its famous landmark, the giant kiwifruit, showing its yellow side.

Our journey then takes us to a small village known as "Te Puna" for an exploration of Maori

cultural heritage. We experience the traditional ceremony of welcome called "powhiri" held at an open area called "marae", regarded as a sacred space or courtyard. The rites involve speeches, dancing, singing, and "hongi". Because the Maoris are very spiritual people they acknowledge the existence of God in their welcoming speeches.

The last part of the traditional welcome is called the "hongi", the touching of noses and foreheads. The gentle pressing of noses signifies the mingling together of the breath of life; the touching of foreheads signifies the exchanging and sharing of knowledge. The ceremony is capped by performance of traditional dances called "kapa haka" and "poi", the womens' dance involving the swinging of balls about the size of tennis balls attached to a rope or string. "Kapa Haka", a Maori traditional dance usually performed by the men, involves rhythmic chants, stomping of the feet and dancers wide-eyed and tongues protruding.

No visit in New Zealand would be complete without stopping at Rotorua which is about 60 kms. south of Tauranga. A geothermal wonderland of gushing geysers, hot springs

and bubbling hot mud pools, Rotorua is a place of natural beauty although sometimes it has the 'rotten eggs' smell because of the hydrogen sulphide emissions from the earth.

An experience not to be missed is the Agrodome located north of Rotorua. The world famous Agrodome is home to

popular sheep show featuring live sheeps shearing, breeds of champion rams, cow milking, lamb feeding, and sheep dog demonstration.

On the waterfront of the port city is "The Strand", regarded as the restaurant central and the main social hub of Tauranga.

The Super Cars of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show

There are cars and then there are super cars! Travelling to the North American International

Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit for the very first time, I had no idea what to expect for the two planned media days. NAIAS is basically the Super Bowl of car shows and this is when the major auto manufacturers put everything out on the table.

Here are some of the super cars that maybe one day I'll be driving on the streets of Winnipeg in auto review article. I'm excited at one day driving the new Acura NSX Concept or the newly announced Corvette Stingray.Acura NSX Concept

Production of this super car is scheduled to start in two years and

Tina Paner claims she was also a victim of fake plane tickets scam

Tina Paner finally broke her silence on the allegation that she sold fake plane tickets to

several Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Spain.

Paner, once a popular star circa 1980s, asserted that she was also victimized. She nevertheless promised that she will refund what is due to the OFWs victims.

The former singer-actress who works as a travel agent claimed that she sold the discounted tickets to her fellow Pinoys in good faith. It was only weeks later when she found out that the tickets were fake.

She said she tried to track down the person who sold her the fake tickets. She added that she was forced to spent her own funds as

Storm brewing in Cesar Montano's household

Talent manager Alfie Lorenzo confirmed that actor Cesar Montano has

left the home he shared with wife Sunshine Cruz for many years.

Lorenzo said it was Cruz herself who asked Montano to leave their house. Montano is now staying at an undisclosed hotel for the past three days.

The root of the brouhaha was a text message from starlet Krista Miller.to Montano which was discovered by the couple's daughters. According to Lorenzo, Cruz confronted Montano about Miller and was dismayed to learn

that some of her gifts are now in the hands of the starlet.

Miller appears in "The Turning Cradle: The Untold Story of Alfredo Lim." an upcoming movie of Montano.

Members of the showbiz media tried to contact Montano, Cruz and Miller but received no comments from them.

Meanwhile, Cruz hired lawyer Atty. Bonito Alentajan who was quick to issue a statement to media requesting the general public to respect the privacy of her client, adding that the matter is a private affair

that should be solve away from the prying eyes of the public. Lorenzo also denied reports that the whole thing is just a gimmick to promote Montano’s movie. The Buzz” said it tried to contact Montano, Cruz and Miller but they refused to comment.

Cruz’s lawyer, Alentajan, however, gave a statement to “The Buzz.”

“I respectfully request that the general public respect their privacy. If there is a private matter to resolve, let’s leave it as it is,” the statement read.

UFC Should Do What Boxing Didn’t: Strike While the Iron is Hot

On December 8, 2012, silence took over the homes of Filipinos all

over Winnipeg and the world. Titos and Titas jaws dropped as they sat there stunned at the sight of what had just happened. Our beloved hero, Manny Pacquiao, one of the greatest boxers there will ever be, knocked out cold.

Like many of you, I am still getting over the shock of seeing Pacquiao face down on the canvas. As photoshop memes of the slumped over Pac-Man filled my facebook page...one where he’s getting a massage, another where Hulk Hogan is leg dropping him... I let my mind wonder if we would ever get to see him fight Floyd “Money” Mayweather. The

luster of that marquee matchup is certainly gone. As would be the money. Not totally, but clearly not as much as it would be had Pacquiao been the one to knock out Marquez. Floyd wanted Olympic styled testing, Manny said yes and still no fight. Then Floyd didn’t want to go 50/50 on the fight, and Manny said no. Again, no fight.

Now the opportunity is lost. The UFC needs to learn from Boxing’s mistakes. Namely, to strike while the iron is hot. The rumor was that once Georges St-Pierre beats Carlos Condit in his return, the super fight between he and middleweight champion, Anderson Silva would be booked. Well, GSP did his part, however, he does not want to move up to middleweight yet, so that fight was never booked. Instead, GSP

will face heated rival Nick Diaz. Anderson Silva is slated to face Michael Bisping next, but only if... and it is a BIG “if”... Bisping beats Vitor Belfort. If Belfort wins, he will not get another title shot, since he lost via first round knockout last time he fought Silva. The longer we wait for GSP vs Silva, the cooler the preverbal “iron” becomes.

However , truth be told, the fight most want to see is not welterweight champion GSP vs middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The REAL super fight is Anderson Silva vs Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones. In this case, both fights have said they do not want to fight each other.

Any way you look at it, people want to see these super fights. Both would draw huge

money at the box office and on pay per view. In fact, the Ultimate Fighting Championship would be insane not to book these fights. If GSP loses to Diaz and Jones loses to Sonnen, then they made the exact mistake that boxing made in not being able to bring us Pacquiao vs Mayweather. Unfortunately, waiting too long is a mistake they have made in the past. By the time we got to see Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva the match was already irrelevant. It was a great fight, but still, irrelevant.

As fighters come up the ranks and new champions build their legacies, it could be a long time before UFC can book another super fight like GSP vs Silva or Jones vs Silva. So come on, Dana White, Joe Silva, Georges St-Pierre, Jon Jones and Anderson Silva... strike while the iron is hot.

Today, try to open up just a little bit and let the world see the part of yourself that you are sometimes too afraid to reveal. You aren’t afraid to delve into something totally foreign to you and embrace the new experience. A bright new idea of yours should be shared with one and all.

Efforts will bring success in financial matters. Use your power of persuasion only when it is absolutely necessary and not for whims. Make sure you continue to work towards mutually beneficial solutions and don’t use your talents for only your good. You will have a busy day at work.

You will have a better and flexible day at work. You have great plans, especially in the financial department, but you cannot see any encouraging signs yet. Be patient and try to manage your time more efficiently! Change your environment and you may just attract someone totally different.

This is one of those days where you run into a few roadblocks. Just be pleasant as this will help to eventually break through any barriers down the road. Any business transactions you participate in today should be given your most intense concentration. It will be a comfortable day at work and you will be able to enjoy success.

You will have a good day at work despite challenges surfacing. As the New Year kicks off it would be advantageous to reconsider your fiscal habits. You are certainly adept at spending money, but it is time to freshen up your saving habits. There is no time like the present to improve your quality of life.

This is our first column and, at the beginning of the year, a good time to

discuss getting ready to file our tax returns properly. As a tax preparation professional, I will talk about problems with receipts that we often see and, secondly, about some general errors made by taxpayers. These are only examples and not a complete list by any means.

Information slips. I have listed below several items that seem to come up regularly. It is important that you have these items and retain them in case the Canada Revenue Agency later asks for proof.

Income: It may seem common sense to be ready, but it is common for clients not to have all their income slips: T4s, T5s, T3s, T5013s. We make a point of comparing prior years’ slips to this year’s slips, but unless you tell your accountant, he or she may have no idea what is missing. Most income slips are supposed to be sent to you no later than the end of February; however, T3s have until March 31st to be mailed. If you have investments that will earn income that will be reported on a T3 (usually mutual funds), check your regular monthly or quarterly reports to make sure you aren’t missing any.

Tuition:. Students often do not have their tuition receipts. Most universities and colleges require students to go on line and download their tuition receipt for the year. These receipts are used to calculate the tuition, book and

attendance (full and part time) credits. The student is the first one to claim the credits and, if he/she doesn’t have the income to claim all the credit, the remainder can be claimed by a spouse or parent or carried forward to future years, but has to be entered in the year the tuition is paid. It is usually best to claim the credit as soon as possible so take advantage of the opportunity to transfer the credit to another person. The person (spouse or parent) can pass the additional refund on to you when they receive it. As well, in Manitoba, this record is needed in the future to claim the Provincial rebate for students who remain in Manitoba after graduation. This rebate is available whether the student attended universities or colleges in Manitoba or approved institutions outside of Manitoba.

RRSP: You can contribute to RRSPs anytime in the tax year or in the 60 days after in the following year – March 1 this year. That means you should claim every RRSP purchased until March 1, 2013. You are allowed to purchase in a taxation year up to $2,000 more in the year than the allowable deduction without penalty. Purchases of RRSPs in the first 60 days do not attract a penalty for over purchasing in the year of purchase.

Medical; Taxpayers are entitled to deduct all medical expenses that exceed the lesser of 3% of their net income for the year or $2,109. The expenses can be paid during any 12 month period ending during the tax year and

are limited to medical expenses approved by the Province of Manitoba. For example, medical insurance premiums, eyeglasses, physiotherapy, prescriptions and medical appliances are deductible but acupuncture in Manitoba is not. There may be an additional qualification required such as a doctor’s approval for certain medical expenses such as devices for individuals with mobility problems, powered chairs for stairs, air conditioners, etc.

Child Care Expenses: Be sure you have receipts with the name and address of the organization and, if it is a private person providing the service, the Social Insurance Number.

Examples of Things to Watch

One of the stranger incidences, I experienced, happened a few years ago when a client come into the office. He had gone to see a tax preparer who, apparently for religious reasons, did not believe he should claim his common law spouse as a personal exemption. He wanted a fast refund, filed his taxes and came in to see us later to amend his return.

The charity deduction is a good deduction, but has been abused by many organizations. It appears that the most egregious of these schemes have come to an end. Over the years they have included everything from selling art at inflated prices to taking donations with receipts greatly exceeding the amount of cash donated. The best that can be said is if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Consult a professional if the scheme seems to be complicated. Also ensure that the charity is a listed charity and you can do this by going to the CRA site http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/menu-eng.html. Probably

the best approach is to contact a professional.

For many years, there has been a disability credit. All disabilities require a doctor or other professional to vouch that there actually is a disability which means the medical professional must fill out and sign a T2201 form. There have been some problems with this claim over the years resulting in changes to the rules and careful monitoring of the claims. Some organizations have been extremely aggressive in encouraging people to make the claim including the sales people having doctors that they made referals to and have charged large fees as a percentage of the claim. Several of these claims have been refused or reversed and repayment demanded where it had previously been allowed. I don’t know how many have got the fees returned. Often, it is obvious whether you are entitled to the disability credit, but if in doubt, my best recommendation is to see a professional or at least read the required form, T2201, very carefully.

Business expenses: If you operate a business either part time or full time, you are allowed to deduct expenses. One basic principal is expenses must be reasonable, although there can be some complaints that the rules are not all reasonable from the taxpayers’ point of view. If the business is operated from your home, you cannot use the home office expense until you make a profit and home office expenses are limited to a percentage based on the office square footage over the total square footage. You will not want to claim depreciation on your home. All business expenses are deductible but some

are written off in the year when they are incurred and some, capital expenses, are deducted over time by way of depreciation. All revenue and expenses are treated on an accrual basis as they are earned or incurred and not on a cash basis as money is transferred.

If you are claiming expenses as an employee where you are not reimbursed for all expenses which you are required to incur, there are further limitations. The first requirement is you must have a form, T2200, signed by your employer indicating you were required by your employment contract to incur these expenses. An employee can deduct a proportionate share of his home office expenses if the contract requires him/her to have a home office, limited to fuel, hydro, water, cleaning and minor repairs. If the employee earns commission income this is expanded to include the same proportion of property taxes, insurance and mortgage interest.

That is all the room that I have for this time, but I will have more information in future columns.
