LIFELINES

HHS’s new mandate for contraception/sterilization coverage … includes an incredibly narrow exemption for “religious employers” that protects almost no one. For example, a Catholic institution serving the poor and needy would have to fire its non-Catholic staff, refuse life-affirming care to non-Catholic people in need, and devote itself instead to “the inculcation of religious values” to qualify for the exemption. Individuals, insurers, and the sponsors of non-employee health plans (e.g., student health plans in Catholic schools) would have no exemption at all. This effort to corral religion exclusively into the sanctuaries of houses of worship betrays a complete ignorance of the role of religion in American life, and of Congress’s long tradition of far more helpful laws on religious freedom. ~Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston and Chair of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, Letter to Congress, September 7, 2011, in support of the “Respect for Rights of Conscience Act” United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, 2012

DIOCESE OF SCRANTON HOSTING VOCATION DISCERNMENT WEEKEND The Diocese of Scranton Vocation Office is hosting a weekend of discernment for young men in high school and beyond, ages 16-30, to assist them in recognizing whether God is inviting them to step forward to offer their lives as diocesan priests. The weekend will be held Feb. 10-12 at Fatima Center in Dalton. The program runs from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon and includes a presentation on the basics of praying into God’s will for us, testimony from current seminarians, celebration of Mass, personal prayer, and fraternity. “Many young men have imagined the possibility of being a priest one day. Many have been told by others that they possess the qualities that would make a good priest. Often as young men consider their future, the idea of priesthood occurs over and over again, even as they look to other possible careers or to the married life. Frequently young men find peace around their search to know where God is leading them by talking about their interest in priesthood and by listening to the experience of those who have already decided to enter seminary to become priests,” said Father Jim Rafferty, Diocesan vocation director. For further information, contact Father Rafferty at 1-570-207-1452 or [email protected]

DIOCESAN COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women ask the faithful of the Diocese to offer prayer intentions during the month of January for “Peace.” Please pray (7) Our Father’s, (7) Hail Mary’s, (7) Glory Be’s and the Creed for this intention. May peace reign in your heart, in your family and in the world. During the month of February the Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women would like the faithful of the Diocese to pray for the sick and suffering. The late John Paul II declared February 11th the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes as “World Day of the Sick.” Please take time to visit/call a homebound parishioner or visit patients in a nursing home. Perhaps you can make a meal for a critically ill friend or neighbor. As Ash Wednesday approaches make every effort to observe a strict fast and to maintain that fast throughout the Lenten Season.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT “We the faithful of the Roman Catholic Community of St. Brigid Parish, (St. Francis Xavier and St. Augustine Churches), in union with our Holy Father, the Pope, and the Diocese of Scranton, are called through baptism to share in the mission which Jesus Christ has entrusted to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We in this Faith Community, under the leadership of our Bishop and our Pastor, cooperate to proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the teaching of the Church, to celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, for the salvation of all, and to witness by grace to the Kingdom of God so as to promote a culture of life, justice and peace. We especially endeavor to foster spiritual growth and evangelization in our present and future generations by drawing parish members back to active participation.”
