It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your new Santa Barbara Region President for 2015. For those who don’t know me, our family joined

PCA in 2002 after discovering the Ca-marillo breakfast quite by accident. We received an incredibly warm and friendly welcome from Dave Stone and became members on the spot. Initially, my wife, Pamuela, was skeptical about being involved with a car club. How-ever, after our first event, she became

an instant fan of the club. For several years, I served as the Goodie Store chairman, and in 2006 our family was honored with the “Family of the Year” award from PCA headquarters. Since then, the Santa Barbara Region has grown and prospered, thanks to the dedication and hard work of our Board members.

My goals as President for 2015 are quite simple – first and foremost, to welcome all members, new, recent, and long-term, to our events. If you have not attended a breakfast or other activity recently, please join us. I look forward to seeing and personally welcoming everyone. PCA was created to help members have fun with their cars. My job, which I take seriously, is to see that happen.

Second is to continue the Santa Barbara Region (SBR) tradition of excellence in all aspects of the club. This includes planning and executing the best and most en-joyable activities for our members, plus producing and distributing the multiple-award-winning newsletter, Der

Auspuff, while at the same time exercising our fiduciary responsibility to our members in keeping the club finan-cially stable. SBR was honored with the Region of the Year award for 2013, solid evidence that we are on the right path.

Recently, I attended the Zone 8 Presidents meeting and learned about the exciting year PCA has in store for 2015, the 60th anniversary of PCA. Men and women from Zone 8 are constantly thinking about how to make PCA events better for our members, everything from Auto-cross to Concours to Parade to Time Trial. Every detail and every rule is analyzed and studied, and every deci-sion is carefully considered. Sweating the details on a daily basis makes our club very special. We are fortunate to have so many wonderful, dedicated people in our club at every level.

2015 promises to be an exciting and eventful year for SBR. We have a full slate of activities planned. Please see the flyers in this issue of Der Auspuff for details. The majority of our 2014 Board members will continue to serve for 2015, which will help me tremendously. Being able to rely on their experience and wisdom will make my learning curve much less steep.

Special thanks are due to outgoing President, Doreen Pankow, who will serve as Activities Chair this year. Do-reen and the rest of the Board have set the bar quite high for me, and they will be an extremely tough act to follow. I pledge to do my utmost to follow their fine leadership examples. My door is always open, and your comments and suggestions are welcome.

The President’s ColumnMIKE HODSON

From The Editor’s DeskJOHN ALFENITO

Happy New Year! I’d like to welcome our new board members, Presi-dent Mike Hodson and Secretary

Howard Rubenstein. 2015 has a tough act to follow when you consider all the big things that happened in and to our region in 2014.

Please allow me to express my sincere gratitude for being named “Man of the Year” at December’s Holiday Brunch. I

know that you appreciate Der Auspuff because many of you tell me so at each of our meetings. But, to be recog-nized as MOTY is something I did not expect. Thank you very much! I am humbled by this honor.

Speaking of the magazine, you may notice a few subtle changes for the new year. For starters, the cover logo has been slightly reworked, modernized, perhaps, which I hope will give us a little more creative freedom with cover images in the months ahead. There are a few other minor adjustments, which you may notice as well.

About this month’s cover shot...as is my tradition, I packed up “the big camera” and headed for the Los Angeles Convention center the week before Thanksgiv-ing for a visit to the L.A. International Auto Show. Once again, Porsche’s display in Petree Hall did not disap-point. I posted a number of pictures on the SBR Face-book page in November, but I saved the best shots for this month’s Der Auspuff (pages 20 & 21).

While Porsche presented most of its display cars in sil-ver (as usual), the new offerings, all badged “GTS,” were in brilliant red! The effect was as you’d expect - pretty spectacular, like the Carrera GTS Cabriolet covergirl.

And, as you can see in my selfie at left, I made a new friend at the auto show. Not the smartest guy on the show floor, but a heck of a listener, and don’t we all need one of those occasionally?

So, here’s to a great 2015 ahead of us. The yearly ac-tivities schedule is filling up, which means we should all make our plans now to join our fellow members on a fun adventure or two, or more!

Come join us for a fun-filled trip over the 2015 Memorial Day weekend where you will see, explore and touch some of the most majestic and awesome red rock and sandstone formations in America. We will depart the morning of Friday, May 22, and travel north on CA Hwy 14, then east across the Pearblossom Hwy and north on the I-15. We’ll stop for lunch in Las Vegas and then continue north, pass-ing briefly through Arizona and then crossing into Utah.

As we cross into Arizona and Utah, you will drive through a corridor of native sandstone carved out by the Virgin River, providing spectacular scenery. Just north of St. George, we will head east on UT-9 towards Springdale, where we will stay at the Best Western Zion Park Inn, our weekend home. The rooms are individually climate-controlled and have satellite TV and kitchenettes. There is also an outdoor pool and a hot tub that you can enjoy. We will even have a reserved area for parking our cars. Friday evening, we’ll enjoy Mexican cuisine at the Bit and Spur just across the street from the hotel.

On Saturday, we’ll explore Zion National Park, a vertical sandstone world with miles of serpentine slot canyons and immense quietude. These unique sandstone cliffs range in color from cream, to pink, to red. They could be described as sandcastles crowning desert canyons. Designated in

1919, Zion is Utah’s oldest National Park. At the Zion NP entry and Visitor Center, we will catch the Zion Canyon free shuttle. The driver will describe the various monuments, sites and trails as we drive through the park. We will be able to get off and on the shuttle bus at multiple stops throughout the park to explore the scenery. Have your camera and plenty of batteries ready as the photo ops are everywhere you turn. Zion offers many paths and hiking trails that range from short “leg stretchers” to longer hikes, so bring your hiking shoes and sunscreen. The Lodge in the center of the park offers lunch and snack items including ice cream cones, along with a large lawn with trees to relax under and a gift shop to browse. At the end of the day, we will all meet for cocktails and dinner at the Wildcat Willies Ranch Grille and Saloon in Springdale.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is our destination on Sunday. The 9E route will take us over some twisty roads and through the one-mile-long Zion tunnel. We will then cut through the park’s Checkerboard Mesa area, which ends at US- 89 at Mt. Carmel Junction. We’ll follow US-89 into Arizona and further south into the park and then take Hwy 67 out to our first viewpoint, Cape Royal. This spot provides a breathtaking panoramic view up, down and across the Grand Canyon with unlimited vistas to the east and west. Then enjoy a half-mile walk out to the natural

arch of the Angel’s Window for more spectacular views. We’ll drive back to the Grand Canyon Village and Lodge where you can enjoy lunch while sitting on the patio that overlooks the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. You’ll want to take advantage of the half-mile walk out to Bright An-gel Point where the canyons drop away from you on both sides of the trail for more incredible views. After enjoying all these sites, we’ll return to Zion for a delicious dinner at the Switchback Grille, adjacent to our hotel.

Monday will be an optional day for those who want to stay and explore more sights and avoid the holiday traffic. Just relax in Springdale or take a side trip to Bryce Canyon NP. We’ll head north on Hwy 89, then east on Hwy 12 through the beautiful Red Canyon area and on into Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce Canyon’s elevation ranges from 8000-9000 feet, meaning temperatures could be

on the cool side. The canyon itself is about 800 feet deep. Within the park, we will stop at over a dozen view-points to see the breathtaking views and photo ops, all within a short walking distance from your car. Your eyes won’t believe that this spectacle of nature is actually possible. Forces of nature have conspired over millions of years to wear away and create these stunning rock castles. The in-tricate spires and formations known as hoodoos defy your imagination. There are also trails down into the canyons where you can experience walking through the hoodoos. Hiking the trail between Sunset and Sunrise view-points is well worth the effort. Dinner will be on your own. There is a great restaurant just outside the park, or you can have dinner back in Springdale.

If you are interested in participating in this action-packed weekend, register with Ted Lighthizer & Doreen Pankow at [email protected] or 805-527-8280. Rates for rooms with a king-size or two queen-size beds are $179 per night plus tax and include a hot breakfast. The fee for the entire weekend is $125 and includes three dinners, taxes, gratuities, and activity fee. You also need to be prepared to pay $25 per car at the entry to each of the three National Parks or bring your National Park Senior pass (age 62 and over) to enter the parks for free.

These Memorial Day Weekend trips have filled up quickly in prior years, so register early. This promises to be yet another memorable Santa Barbara Region event.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it will soon be time to start your engines! Saturday April 25, 2015, PCA-SBR will host a PCA Zone 8 Autocross at the Camaril-lo Airport. However, you don’t need to own a

Porsche or be a PCA member to run in this event. What you will need is a helmet and a vehicle that will pass our tech inspection. See the Zone 8 rules at http://tinyurl.com/Zone8Rules for more detailed information, espe-cially if your car has been modified.

I would encourage all members, specifically those who have not participated in an autocross before, to register and drive in this event. Our club has over 700 members, and I am hoping for 60 to 65 entrants on April 25.

For those of you who are not familiar with how we run an autocross, club members design and create a driv-ing course on a closed runway at the Camarillo Airport. The route, marked by traffic cones and chalk, provides you with the chance to put your car through its paces in a controlled environment. The course is designed not for speed, but rather for handling. In fact, you probably won’t be going any faster than the top speed of your sec-ond gear (about 50 mph). You’ll be able to drive your car the way it was designed to be driven. You won’t need any track or previous autocross experience as there will be friendly, competent instructors available to help you get started. Once you’ve tried an autocross, you will have a much better understanding of how your car handles.

For those of you who have previously taken part, there is a new element this year, and it involves enrollment. ALL participants must sign up on-line. The web address to do so is http://tinyurl.com/AutoXCamarillo. You will be able to get detailed information on the event, obtain directions, register your car, provide contact information, and pay on-line. We will not accept checks or take sign-ups through the mail.

In addition, for those of you who would like to vol-unteer to work the event and do not plan to drive, I am asking you to enroll online also, using the same address as above.

I encourage you to sign up for the autocross. This is the one driving day all members should experience. And isn’t that the real reason you have a Porsche...to drive it? Here is your chance! =

SBR Holiday Brunch At La Cumbre Country ClubOur members enjoyed another wonderful holi-

day brunch at the stately La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara. It was decorated beauti-fully for the season with garlands, wreaths and

lighted trees. The tables in the elegant dining room were set with sparkling glasses, silverware and festive center-pieces, and the dining areas had views of the beautiful gardens and lawns.

Over 110 members arrived with unwrapped toys to be delivered to Santa Barbara’s Unity Shoppe to help bring joy to less fortunate children this holiday season. The toys were piled high onto tables adjacent to the fireplace beside tables displaying the silent auction items and door prizes for our members.

When the majority of participants had arrived, we all enjoyed a sumptuous brunch including limitless cham-pagne and mimosas. The brunch presentation was su-perb and included delicious breakfast items, prime rib, salmon, and a variety of fruit, salads and desserts. Need-less to say, we all thoroughly enjoyed the fare and the conversations with our fellow members and friends.

A Sunday brunch is the perfect time to celebrate friendships we’ve developed with other members and to recognize all our members who have contributed so much time to make our club successful. Following the meal, our president went to the podium to begin the ac-knowledgements.

Our sponsors, Sam & Lacy Abergel from Rusnak West-lake Porsche and Walt & Rebecca Branscome from Santa Barbara Auto Group, were recognized and thanked for their ongoing financial support and all the continental breakfasts they’ve provided at the start of many of our events. Walt and Sam were presented with gift cards in appreciation for all they do to support our club, and each dealership was presented with an honorary plaque. We were also delighted to have eight past presidents in at-tendance.

Doreen provided a brief overview of SBR’s activities in 2014 and thanked all the members who served as coor-dinators and volunteers and made these such successful and fun events. She also expressed appreciation for their generous contributions to the various charities we sup-

Doreen thanked Past President Burt Misevic for donating his original art-work of Stearns Wharf, as well as Santa Barbara Auto Group, Schneider Autohaus, and other members for their generous gift donations to help raise funds for this char-ity.

The 2014 Board members were recognized for their service to the club, and several board members were pre-sented with special awards to acknowledge their many contributions to the club over the past five to ten years.

Nicolas Liakas received the Lifetime Achievement

award for over ten years of service on the board. He’s held multiiple positions from editor to president, and his significant accomplishments, including the multitude of events he’s organized, deserved special acknowledge-ment. John & Jeanne McNair, Ted Lighthizer and John Alfenito were also given recognition for their many ac-complishments and years of service provided to the club.

Dick Lange announced the Man and Woman of the Year and presented the perpetual awards to Der Auspuff Editor John Alfenito and President Doreen Pankow. Dick also certified the 2014 election results. Doreen handed over the presidential baton to Mike Hodson, who then announced the 2015 officers: Mike Hodson as President, Barry Weinstein as Vice President, Howard Rubenstein as Secretary, Steve Kaller as Treasurer and Doreen Pan-kow as Activities Chair. Dick Lange will move to Public Relations, and the rest of the board appointees remain unchanged from 2014.

Mike Hodson then announced the winners of the Si-lent Auction items. To thank our members in attendance, dozens of great door prizes were given away. Mike closed the meeting by expressing gratitude to everyone for their support and stated he is looking forward to be-ing our President and enjoying another exciting year in 2015. =

The Tech Report

BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOSSanta Barbara Region Tech Editor

Rear Wheel Steering

Throughout Porsche’s history, a common thread has been the initial offering of high technology in the marque’s

“halo” models, followed by eventual across-the-range implementation of these high-tech features. This philos-ophy was perhaps best exemplified in the 959 supercar of the 1980s. The features of this rolling, uber-technol-ogy showcase eventually trickled down to Porsche’s “normal” models, such as the all-wheel-drive 964 Car-rera 4 of 1989 and the twin-turbo-charged 993 Turbo of 1996. Today’s Porsche lineup is full of AWD mod-els with electronic controls that owe their existence to the pioneering 959.

Technological advances and econ-omies of scale have enabled once-ex-pensive and exclusive features to be installed in a wider array of Porsche cars and at a much faster rate. One of the latest examples of this democ-ratization of technology is the active engine mounts of the top-of-the-range 2010 997 GT3 and Turbo, find-

ing their way into the more “plebe-ian” 981 Boxster and Cayman mod-els in 2013 (though these mid-engine sported cars incorporate this feature into the transmission mounts).

Porsche’s new rear wheel steering system was introduced just last year in the 991 GT3 and is also standard equipment in the 991 Turbo and the close-to-$1M 918 Spyder supercar. It is likely to be gradually phased in to the rest of the Porsche model lineup. This electronically controlled sys-tem is relatively simple and seam-

less in operation, thanks to modern electronics, and it is the culmination of decades of research by Porsche engineers searching for an elegant solution for precise control of the rear suspension characteristics of its high-performance street cars.

The suspension of a thoroughbred sports car is at best a compromise between its promise of race car-like handling and the everyday realities of commuting on public roads. This is largely achieved through careful selection of spring rates, damper (“shock absorber” in American-speak) settings, sway bars, and the stiffness of the suspension bushings.

Race cars often use solid metal sus-pension bushings to ensure precise control of wheel alignment during hard cornering. This works great on a smooth racetrack but would be ex-tremely harsh and unlivable on the street. The suspension bushings of road cars are usually made of rubber, and they serve to partially isolate the normal movement of suspension arms from the body. The drawback of rubber bushings is that they can

deflect too much at the level of hard cornering that a Porsche is capable of, with ill effects on handling.

Porsche’s first attempt to quell this tendency was the “Weissach” rear axle design of the 928 of 1978. The 928 used a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension design, with rubber bushings at the attachment points for each suspension arm. Dur-ing hard cornering, the outside rear wheel of early 928 prototypes had the tendency to “toe out” or steer slightly outward due to bushing de-

flection. This would create instability of the rear end and was potentially dangerous as it caused oversteer in which the rear end would slide out.

As a result, Porsche engineers de-veloped a blade-like lower control arm for the production 928 that actu-ally flexed during such maneuvers, pivoting the outside rear wheel in-ward to provide a passive rear-steer effect. This innovation worked very well.

The 993 of 1995 was the first 911 to utilize multi-link rear suspension, and Porsche employed a similar “ki-nematic” passive toe adjustment sys-tem. Instead of a flexible control arm, a specially calibrated, soft rear inner control arm bushing deflects inward during hard cornering to achieve the same effect.

Today, these passive mechanical systems do seem a bit Rube Gold-berg, but they are actually quite ef-fective. The main drawbacks are that normal wear and tear of the rubber suspension bushings with age and use can have a deleterious effect on these rear-steer systems, and they are only employed during very hard cor-nering maneuvers. During normal driving, they do nothing to enhance the driving experience. Also, special-ized tools and knowledge are need-ed to properly align the suspension of a 928 or 993. Ill handling effects and rapid rear tire wear will occur if proper procedures and tools are not used.

The logical evolution of rear wheel steering would be to make the sys-tem “active” by adding electronic controls to automatically steer the rear wheels in response to front wheel steering angle. This would aid both low-speed parking maneuvers and high- speed handling. Several Japanese automakers offered com-plex electro-hydraulic rear steering

The suspension of a thoroughbred sports car is at best a compromise between its promise of race car-like handling and the everyday realities of commuting on public roads.

systems in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These systems were generally bulky, overcomplicated, and slow to react, so most were shelved by the mid-1990s.

Modern electronics and computer systems have allowed automakers the opportunity to revisit such sys-tems, and Porsche has jumped upon it. Porsche’s new rear axle steering (RAS) system consists of a pair of small electric motor/actuator assem-blies that take the place of the normal toe control arm of each rear wheel (see illustration at right).

As with Porsche’s electronic power steering pump (EPS; see the January 2014 issue of Der Auspuff for more info) for the front wheels, each elec-tric motor drives a toothed rubber belt that converts the motor’s rotary motion into the linear motion neces-sary to shorten and extend the actua-tor arm as necessary.

The RAS system control unit moni-tors signals from existing sensors that measure steering wheel angle, vehicle speed, yaw angle, lateral ac-celeration and engine speed/throttle position to determine how to steer the rear wheels.

At speeds of about 30 MPH and be-low, the rear wheels steer in the op-posite direction of the front wheels (by 1.5 degrees in in the GT3 and up to almost 3 degrees in the 991 Turbo and 918) to enhance maneuverabil-ity at low speeds. This aids in tight parking situations as the width of the turning circle is reduced, and it

increases agility in slalom-like han-dling situations.

At speeds of above 50 MPH, the rear wheels steer in the same direc-tion as the front wheels. This effec-tively lengthens the wheelbase (the distance between the center of the front and rear wheels if the vehicle is viewed from the side), and aids in high- speed handling stability. This is the same effect that is imparted by passive rear-steer systems of the 928 and 993, except it is far more respon-sive in that it anticipates the situation by pre-loading the outside rear wheel in response to the driver’s steering inputs. Porsche claims that this func-tion is worth at least 3 seconds per lap at the famed Nurburgring race-track proving grounds in Germany.

So, what does all of this electron-ic trickery mean to the enthusiast Porsche driver? The system is actual-ly quite seamless and transparent in operation, thanks to countless hours of testing and calibration by Porsche engineers. As with the aforemen-tioned active engine mounts, there is virtually no downside to the RAS system as it does nothing to isolate the driver from the road or interfere with his or her inputs; it simply en-hances the driving experience.

Your author predicts that the RAS system will soon be offered as an optional extra across most of the Porsche range. It is simple, effective, and easily integrated into any chas-sis as all of the requisite sensors and high speed onboard data networks are already in place.

Shown is the top view of the left rear suspension layout of a 991 GT3/Turbo. The motor/actuator (1) shortens or lengthens the tow control arm based on the driver’s steering input, vehicle speed, and more.

1

In terms of service and reliability, the RAS system is not likely to be a major cause of concern. Wheel align-ment or repair to damaged rear sus-pension components will require the use of a factory PIWIS-II or equiva-lent scan tool to initialize and cali-brate the RAS system, but this is the case with many of the components of the modern Porsche. Given how high-tech the latest Porsches have become, one can only wonder what the future will bring! =

The R.U.F. Report

Southern California is home to many world-class universities, and preeminent among those is the California Institute of Technology (familiarly known as Caltech) located in Pasadena. On No-

vember 20th, 23 members of R.U.F. had the privilege of touring the campus and dining in its famed faculty club, the Anthenaeum.

Before embarking on our tour, we learned some inter-esting history. Caltech has distinctly California roots, having been founded as Throop University in 1891 in Pas-adena. It originally started with a focus on manual arts; however, through the wise guidance of an early trustee, it evolved into a college of science and technology. It be-came Caltech in 1920, and the rest is, as they say, history.

In the course of our initial briefing, we discovered that two of our R.U.F. participants had direct family connec-tions to Caltech. Susan Brown’s grandfather attended the university, and John Mattina’s father earned his Master’s degree there. This is quite a coincidence considering that the enrollment of the school is not large, only 978 under-graduates and 1253 graduate students.

We also learned that a total of 34 Nobel Laureates have been alumni or faculty as well as numerous recipients of prestigious science awards such as the National Medal of Science or Technology.

Our architectural walking tour of the campus was led by two knowledgeable volunteer docents. Both were very enthusiastic about imparting their knowledge and love for the beautiful campus.

The original architectural master plan called for a Spanish Renaissance style expressed through the use of arcades, courtyards, reflecting pools, decoration and tile work. Interestingly, much of the decorative tile work on

the facades of the buildings contained artistic representa-tions of the function of that particular building. For ex-ample, a stylistic pontoon airplane was on the aeronautics building, and cornhusks adorn the botany building.

In viewing the many artful buildings and verdant grounds, we learned that part of the philosophy behind the architectural master plan was to provide a beautiful and peaceful setting in which engineers and scientists could see the beauty of their surroundings and become more aware of the aesthetic values of life.

One of the architectural gems of the campus is the Anth-enaeum Club, with its stately public reception rooms and dining areas. There are also guest suites in the club for visiting dignitaries and fac-ulty. Albert Einstein was on the faculty here in the 1930s, and there is a suite in the Anthenaeum named for him.

Our group ended

the tour at the club and enjoyed a deli-cious buffet on the patio in the balmy 80-degree weather. Our thanks go to two SBR members: Dick Lange, who suggest-ing the venue, and to Bob Wulf for facilitat-ing our lunch at the Anthenaeum. =

Come join us for a fun-filled trip over the 2015 Memorial Day weekend where you will see, explore and touch some of most majestic and awesome red rock and sandstone formations in America. We will experience the grandeur of Zion National Park on Saturday, a vertical sandstone world with miles of serpentine slot canyons and immense quietude and where hiking trails abound. On Sunday, we’ll take a scenic drive to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to enjoy its majestic beauty.

Monday will be an optional day for those who want to stay and explore more scenic sights and avoid the holiday traffic. Just relax in Springdale or take a day trip with the group to Bryce Canyon National Park and stop at over a dozen view-points to see the breathtaking views and photo ops, all within a short walking distance from your car

The Best Western Zion Park Inn will be our weekend home. Discounted rates are available until April 20th for king-size or two queen-size beds at $179 per night plus tax. This rate includes a hot breakfast for two. The rooms are individually climate controlled and have satellite TV and kitchenettes. There is also an outdoor pool and a hot tub that you can enjoy and a reserved area for parking our cars. Reservations may be made by calling the hotel at 435-772-3200. Please indicate you are with PCA-SBR. http://www.zionparkinn.com/

SBR Invades Motor4Toys 2014 - On December 7, 2014 a large group of SBR members joined thousands of other car enthusiasts at Woodland Hills’ Anthem Center for the 11th Annual Motor4Toys charity car show. Each participant brought at least one unwrapped toy for donation, which made for a much happier holiday season for less fortunate kids all over Los Angeles County. Thanks to all our members who participated!
