PRESS RELEASE
www.modernslaverygarden.com
For immediate release 08 March 2016
Freedom Street
Launch of the Modern Slavery Garden at the Chelsea Fringe Festival
The Modern Slavery Garden created by garden designer Juliet Sargeant for the Chelsea Flower
Show 2016, will be participating in this years Chelsea Fringe Festival on Sunday 22 May at 5 pm
when Richard Chartres, Bishop of London will declare Freedom Street open!
Freedom Street will echo the Chelsea Flower Show Garden by drawing reference to the highly
symbolic oak tree that Wilberforce stood under with then Prime Minister William Pitt when he
pledged himself to ending the Atlantic slave trade. The Oak trees in the Chelsea garden will be
represented on Ebury street with quarter sized brightly painted oak doors attached above head
height to the lamp posts on the stretch of the street, this will reflect the fact that today modern
slavery happens behind closed doors.
Freedom Street has the full support of the retailers on Ebury Street and in fact Beulah London, the
luxury ethical fashion brand has designed a dress to mark the Modern Slavery Garden at the Chelsea
Flower Show.
Freedom Street will remain in place for the duration of the Fringe Festival which runs until 12 June.
According to the US government, there are 27 million slaves in the world. The UK government
estimates there are 13,000 slaves in the UK and the Modern Slavery Garden at the Chelsea Flower
Show 2016 aims to draw attention to this abhorrent practice and help stamp it out.
Gardening is globally recognised as having major therapeutic benefits to those who have suffered
emotional and physical trauma and the oak saplings that we will see on the Modern Slavery Garden
are being nurtured by several keen gardeners in a Salvation Army safe house who were previously
enslaved and recently rescued by the Salvation Army.

- Full details of the Chelsea Fringe can be found at:www.chelseafringe.com
- Full details of the garden and the Modern Slavery Committee can be found at:www.modernslaverygarden.com
- Wilberforce ended the transatlantic slave trade, but not slavery. According to the Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP), produced by the US Government, there are 27 million people in Slavery around the world. Thats more than in the entire history of transatlantic slavery.
- The Modern Slavery Act 2015 is the first of its kind in Europe, and one of the first in the world, to specifically address slavery and trafficking in the 21st century. The new legislation significantly enhances support and protection for victims, gives law enforcement the tools they need to target todays slave drivers, ensures perpetrators can be severely punished, and includes a world leading provision to encourage business to take action to ensure their end-to-end supply chains are slavery free.

PRESS RELEASE
www.katieslymphoedemafund.co.uk
For Immediate Release 4 April 2016
Katies Garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2016
Katies Lymphoedema Fund was set up to champion Lymphoedema in memory of Katie Wohlrab Oliver, who
struggled with the condition and succumbed to cancer in 2001 aged just 35. This year KLF is supporting The
Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, and will be creating a Cut Flower Garden designed by Carolyn Dunster and
Noemi Mercurelli, to be shown at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in honour of Katie.
The garden will celebrate Katies life and raise awareness of the work that KLF does in raising money to train
oncology nurses and other NHS practitioners in the treatment of Lymphoedema; in particular in Manual
Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). MLD is a type of massage that reduces swelling from Lymphoedema, with the
aim of moving fluid from the swollen area into an area where the lymphatic system is working normally.
Carolyn is a professional florist and planting designer and set up her own business Simply Roses 15 years
ago. Noemi is a graduate from the KLC School of Garden Design where she won the Great Dixter Award and
was shortlisted for the prestigious RHS Young Designer of the Year.
The garden will be full of joy and positivity, laid out with raised planting beds demonstrating how to grow
flowers for cutting and arranging. A flower prepping table will display pots, dried seed heads, gardening and
floristry tools as well as a number of buckets and vases filled with seasonal cut flowers.
There will be a bubbling water feature included in the garden, which will represent the lymphatic drainage
system and also draw attention to the vital and ongoing work of KLF. The palette of the garden is pink/bur-
gundy, reflecting the colours of both the KLF and the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity logos.
Katies Lymphoedema Fund aims to train NHS practitioners in the management and treatment of Lym-
phoedema, thus increasing the availability of therapists which is still extremely limited.

PRESS RELEASE
The River Test and history of the Huguenots inspire
the Brewin Dolphin Forever Freefolk Show Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016
For Immediate Release 22 April 2016
Brewin Dolphin is one of the UKs leading independent providers of personalised, discretionary wealth ser-
vices. They have been helping clients plan their finances and manage investments for over 250 years. For the
fifth year in succession, Brewin Dolphin are sponsoring a garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The 2016
garden, Forever Freefolk, has been designed by multi-award winning nursery woman Rosy Hardy.
Inspirations for the garden design have been many and varied, but the chalk streams on the river Test in
Hampshire, the Huguenots, who fled persecution from France to England, and the impact that they had on
the way in which money is produced in the modern day are all key elements.
The Huguenots were French Protestants with origins in the 16th century. The Foreign Protestants Naturalisa-
tion Act, of 1708, allowed foreign protestants to migrate and settle in England. An estimated 50,000 fled to
England.
Huguenots quickly rose to prominence in banking, stock-broking and insurance, together with the trades of
printing and paper-making. One Huguenot that was particularly inspirational for Rosy Hardy when designing
the Brewin Dolphin garden 2016 was Henri de Portal. Portal was twenty when he settled in Hampshire, where
he began working at a paper mill in South Stoneham and quickly became friends with Sir William Heathcote,
who gave Portal the lease to Laverstoke Mill. This mill was on the river Test, and would soon become one of
the most successful paper mills in the whole of England. This mill happens to be in the same village as
Hardys nursery.
The River Test runs 63km long, and is one of the longest and most prominent chalk streams in England. The
purity of the water in the Test makes it perfect for paper making, specifically the manufacturing of bank
notes.
Portal won the contract to make paper for Bank of England notes in 1724. The paper that Portal created was
80 to 90 grams per square metre, manufactured from cotton fibre (sometimes mixed with linen) and impreg-
nated with polyvinyl alcohol or gelatine to give it extra strength. Portal also invented the metallic thread in-
corporated into the paper (the dotted line called windowed thread), which continues to be used to this day.
There are around 200 chalk streams in the world under threat from pollution and climate change; 160 of
these are in England, one of them being the river Test. Visitors to the garden are invited to consider the
fragility of chalk streams, a rare and vital natural resource and the importance of protecting them for future
generations. Brewin Dolphin has a similar responsibility to strengthen, grow and protect their clients invest-
ments.

PRESS RELEASE
Key plants featured on The Red Thread, a garden designed by Robert Barker for Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2016
www.robertbarkerdesign.com
For Immediate Release 23 June 2016
Robert Barkers debut garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, The Red Thread, will display a wide range of plants for visitors to enjoy.
Robert has chosen several key plants and trees for his garden, including Cornus controversa, Pittosporum tobira Nanum, Hydrangea quercifolia, Dryopteris filix-mas, Astrantia major subsp.involucrata Shaggy, Hakonechloa macra, Rodgersia aesculifolia, Sanguisorba Tanna, Percicaria polymorpha, Geranium phaeum Lilly Lovell, Gymnocarpium dryopteris and Molinia Transparent.
Two beautiful multi-stemmed Cornus controversa will be
placed in opposite corners of the garden. The controversa is
Chinese and is also known as the wedding cake tree, which
will be used as a subtle reference to the garden concept.
Pittosporum tobira will be placed throughout the
garden as a contrast to the sculptural oak blocks.
They have been selected for their lovely round-dome
form and leathery, glossy obovate leaves.
Interesting Hydgrangea quercifolia will be
planted at opposite corners of the garden next to
two characterful oak posts. Chosen for their
handsome, large, deeply lobed leaves, they will
provide the garden with wonderful texture and
depth.
Sanguisorba Tanna is a key plant that will work subtly with the red colour of the rope used within the design. Its a lovely, compact burnet, with stunning flowers and will feature throughout the garden in drifts. The attractive foliage makes it an excellent plant to combine with Hakonechloa macra.
Hakonechloa macra is a fresh green grass
with a wavy carpet-like texture, and
creates a calming effect. Used throughout
the garden, it will add movement and
softness.
Astrantia major subsp. involucrata
Shaggy adds delicate colour and works in
harmony with the red rope structure.
Shaggy will be planted with companion
plants such as Geraniums and Dryopteris
near the front of the borders that surround
the large oak posts.

Hi - - - -
Im doing the PR for Harrods British Eccentrics Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 - Im hoping to interest you in running a feature in the - - - - Newspaper. I would be very grateful if you would take the time have a read. Please see I have attached detailed images of the garden.
Put the Quirk into Your Quintessentially British Garden Introduction This year, iconic Harrods will be showcasing the Harrods British Eccentrics Garden, designed and created by award-winning gardener and TV personality Diarmuid Gavin. Harrods has had a working relationship with Diarmuid for more than 10 years and, as well as designing the Harrods Chelsea Flower Show garden 2016, the store announce the newly launched bespoke garden-design and landscaping-solutions service led by Diarmuid Gavin as part of the Harrods Interiors and Gardens Service.
The CFS Garden For this years Harrods British Eccentrics Garden, Diarmuid takes a break from his signature contemporary style, and has designed an alternative take on a quintessentially English garden, in which he embraces flowering herbaceous perennials, formal topiary and regimented structure.
Alongside Arts and Crafts elegance, there will be a splash of quirky eccentricity in homage to English cartoonist and illustrator William Heath Robinson. Heath Robinson was best known for drawings of complicated machines designed to achieve simple outcomes.
Suggested story angle From small gardens, roof terraces, courtyards to window boxes and balconies, Diarmuid shows you how to add eccentric and quirky twists to any London garden space. Taking inspiration from the Harrods British Eccentrics Garden and Heath Robinson, Diarmuidadvises readers of - - - - - to lift unusual elements from the Harrods Garden in to your London patch by utilising buxus topiaries in unusual ways, planting up herbaceous perennials in colour schemes that youd not normally consider. Its all about taking small but effective risks, and Diarmuid will help you transport Chelsea Flower Show to your London garden and prove that the extraordinary can work for you, not matter how challenging the space.
Reader Opportunity / Competition Readers will have the opportunity to experience Chelsea Flower Show in their own garden by registering to be the lucky owner of elements of the Harrods British Eccentrics Garden once the show has finished.
We are thinking - the window boxes that will be on the windows of the folly building.
..and if you have space! To mark the start of the British summer season, May sees Harrods celebrate all things floral with Whatever the Weather. Harrods will come alive with a variety of floral-inspired activity in-store and across London. The Harrods Floral Afternoon Tea Celebrate the summer with the Harrods Floral Afternoon Tea, a showcase of floral-inspired cakes and treats. Throughout May, acclaimed in-house chefs invite guests to enjoy lavender and peach macaroons, jasmine
and orange chocolate mousse, hibiscus and strawberry jellies with summer fruit, lemongrass yogurt mousse with white chocolate and thyme, and lemon madeleines.
