THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN’ LETTER TO THAW TEAM DMMPS AIN’T FOR WIMPS: A NEW TRADING SOLUTION FOR THE ENERGY STORAGE ERA Utilities are introducing new rates to leverage investments in smart meters, encourage behavioral change, increase solar installations, drive (every pun intended) adoption of electric vehicles, and incentivize participation in energy efficiency and demand response programs. Consequently, we are seeing an increase in the frequency of rate cases, and customers being offered more choice than ever before. With customer choice expanding, and rates becoming increasingly complex, existing billing systems lack the capabilities needed for comprehensive bill comparison. The anxiety caused by COVID-19 is new to all, but the fear, anxiety, hurt and devastation associated with the deaths of George, Ahmaud, and Brionna are not new to many of us. Managing the loss and life changes dictated by the virus has only been compounded by systemic racism. The US energy market does not feature wide enough spreads for merchant investors in energy arbitrage-focused storage projects to make sufficient returns. Too much risk – not enough reward. But DMMPS contracts could be part of an important basket of solutions to enable some long-term revenue certainty and its corresponding drop in expected investor returns. Based on a combination of these supportive findings as well as through ongoing discussions with leaders within the construction industry, it’s clear that the shutdowns and delays due to the pandemic were not fully experienced until the April timeframe. As a member of the Zpryme team, Erin is responsible for creating content by aggregating, analyzing, editing, and formatting market data for energy and technology topics such as smart cities, transportation electrification and EVs, microgrid, renewable energy and distributed energy resources, block chain, transactive energy platforms, and operational and informational technology.
