Attendance

School absenteeism can impact significantly on students'learning and wellbeing.

Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendanceis associated, on average, with higher student achievement.Additionally, attending school every day helps children to buildsocial and emotional skills such as communication, teamworkand resilience.

Under the law, you must make sure your child is enrolled andattends school on all school days unless there is a reasonableexcuse. Schools must monitor attendance of students andfollow up with parents and caregivers any unexplainedabsences.

If your child does not want to go to school, or is missingschool without you knowing, contact your school immediatelyfor assistance and support.

At James Nash SHS we:

Good standing and Awards Trips

As part of our good standing policy students need to maintaina minimum of 90% attendance as well as having all absencesexplained to be eligible to attend the rewards trips at the end ofthe year.

Current Year 10 and 11 students need to have 90% or betterand all absences explained to be eligible for unsupervised studyfrom the start of next year - 2018.

GTTC (Gympie Trade Training Centre) turn theirhand to Gardening

This terms activities involved helping the Gympie CommunityGardens relocate their club. Situated close to the GTTC isthe Endeavour Aged Care facility who are planning to expandtheir facility. Unfortunately this means the Gympie CommunityGarden needs to be uprooted and relocated.

Although a sad time for the club, when the GTTC were askedto assist we were eager to offer our help. Over a couple of daysthe students joined in by removing fencing, garden beds, sheds

and numerous gardening materials. We were also able to offerthe club an area at the centre to store their equipment while anew site is organised for them.

Furthermore, and more in line with our curriculum, we lookforward to helping the club relocate to a new site using ourconstruction skills to design and build a new shed along withcreating pathways and garden beds in the near future.

Bring your own Device (BYOd) Update

JNSHS has successfully implemented the use of BYOd forsenior students over the past 2 years. To ensure a smoothtransition continues into 2018, packages with detailedinformation outlining the requirements for BYOd 2018 were senthome with every year 9, 10 & 11 student last week. If yourstudent is bringing their own device in 2018 please return theagreement form which was enclosed in this package to JNSHSASAP.

Year 10 BYOd 2018

In addition to the information package, there will also be aBYOd Information Evening on 1st of November 2017 at IBlock from 5:30pm till 6:30pm. This session is targeted atfamilies of current Year 9 students however any parents withBYOd program, process or technical questions are welcome tovisit the school for that presentation.

Internet access for students at school

Students have a 2GB internet access allocated to them eachmonth by Education Queensland (EQ). Their internet usageis tracked by EQ and when students exceed the 2GB limittheir internet access is automatically stopped till the end ofthat month. As soon as the department informs us of internetaccess being blocked for a student, we provide advice toCare Class teachers so they can advise students of the lossof internet access. Each new month provides a new 2GB ofinternet access to each student.

Some students have been using their BYOd at school onnon-school activities and have exceeded their data allocationlimit. This then affects their ability to complete internet basedclass activities. In some cases, devices will conduct automaticupdates. If your student exceeds the data allocation and knowsthat they have only used the school network for school work,we will advise them to see our IT Technician, Mr Hodge inthe library who can then help to ascertain the problem andrecommend some solutions.

While teachers do provide advice cautioning students to usetheir school data for school work and to see school ITTechnicians for advice, we believe additional reminders fromhome might help students to ensure they have enough data tocomplete their learning tasks at school.

Oktoberfest for Teens Excursion

Last Thursday 43 of our intrepid German students made theirway to Brisbane Showgrounds for a day of typical GermanOctoberfest activities – minus the beer drinking, of course!

There were German dances led by actual Germans dressedin their traditional Lederhosen and Dirndl, singalongs, pretzeleating contests, gummi bear races, Christmas stalls, anynumber of German sausages and chips with mayo (Pommesmit Mayo). Yum.

A great time was had by all and these students did their schoolproud by being well-behaved and courteous throughout thelong and rainy day.
