WELCOME PETE MURRAY

● Welcome to the Southern Great Barrier Reef for the 2016 Village Festival – part of our vibrant calendar of events that makes Queensland the best address on earth.

Experiences are at the core of any destination event and I hope you come away from the Village Festival with some amazing Queensland memories.

Events play an important role in showcasing a destination, driving visitation, fostering community pride and creating jobs for the local community.

The Palaszczuk Government recognises that events drive Queensland’s tourism economy and we are proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program.

Thank you to the event organisers, volunteers, and those who have come together to deliver the Village Festival for Queensland, and I encourage you to make the most of your experience in the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

The Hon Kate Jones MPMinister for Tourism and Major Events

● It’s an unlikely story... a rising Rugby football star gets so badly injured that he has to leave his sport behind. He picks up an acoustic guitar, teaches himself how to play it and records an indie CD that he sells after shows from the back of his Kombi Van. His debut album, the roots/rock infused ‘Feeler’ (2003), sold 6 x platinum in Australia and earned 12 ARIA Award nominations. The acclaimed album spawned his classic ‘So Beautiful’ which went on to become the Most Performed Australian Song of the Year. Pete went on to release ‘See The Sun’, featuring crowd favourite ‘Better Days’, ‘Summer At Eureka’, ‘Blue Sky Blue’ and more recently ‘The Byron Sessions”.

ACOUSTICALLY YOURS

Everyday we see how tough many families are doing it in Central Queensland. With this is mind, over ten years ago we launched the Coal Train/Undamine Industries Community Fund. Because we think it’s important that we all work together to help each other out. The Coal Train Scholarship Fund provides funds for clubs to sponsor individuals to join their club at no cost. We are super proud of this initiative and it has seen many children throughout our region pursue music, join a club, play sport (including swimming, life saving, rugby league, netball, scouts, rugby union, AFL) and grow in self-confidence.

We also sponsor many children who are excelling in their sporting, musical or academic field. We wish these little legends the very best and hope you all enjoy the Village Festival!

Livingstone Shire Council is incredibly pleased to support this year’s CQ University Village Festival and the excellent flow-on benefits for our local economy, with thousands of visitors flocking to the region over the three-day event. Council is absolutely committed to making our Shire the place to live, work, invest and raise a family and, with events like the Village Festival, it is an exciting time for Livingstone residents. Attractions such as the award winning Keppel Kraken and current Yeppoon Foreshore Revitalisation are putting our region on the national stage and making our Shire a premier coastal destination for tourists. We are also proud to support local artists, musicians and performers through various events and grants, while Council is also gathering

● Welcome to the 2016 CQ University Village Festival! We are thrilled to announce Pete Murray as our major act of the weekend. Also performing are James Reyne (Australian Crawl) and Mark Seymour (Hunters & Collectors) and we are very excited to have Jazz legend James Morrison playing on the Sunday. All of these artists are a huge coup for The CQ University Village Festival. The Village Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of a dynamic calendar of events throughout the state, our Federal Government though Festivals Australia and the Livingstone Shire Council. We would like to thank our major sponsors and acknowledge their continued support and generous investment in the event, which provides a unique opportunity to showcase the region’s creative talent. From the bush to the beach we have so much to offer – enjoy!

WELCOME TO THE 2016 CQ UNIVERSITY VILLAGE FESTIVAL

Pete Murray has repeatedly enjoyed sold out tours across the country, and the rest of the world, throughout his career. He has most recently finished up a string of shows with Rob Thomas across Australia before jumping back in the studio.

2016 will see Pete Murray release his highly anticipated new music and we can’t wait to hear his acoustic set on the Yeppoon Beachfront this Village Festival!

We have a vibrant and flourishing community in our Shire and Council will continue to work side-by-side with residents to realise our full potential as a region and ensure a thriving, prosperous future for many years to come.

MARK SEYMOUR & JAMES REYNEJAMES MORRISON

● “When will you two play together again?” is the question both James Reyne and Mark Seymour have fielded many a time in the past nine years. For fans of these iconic singer songwriters, the wait is nearly over, with a national tour “And The Rest Is History”, confirmed for the third quarter of this year.

The live relationship between James Reyne and Mark Seymour began back in 2007, when they embarked on a massive 90 date national tour, showcasing an extraordinary catalogue of some of Australia’s most loved songs. The 2016 incarnation will be a limited national run, with Mark and James hitting the stage both together and alone, performing classics from Hunters & Collectors, Australian Crawl and each of their extensive solo works.

In a semi acoustic format, both artists will deliver a set of the uniquely Australian songs we all know and love, and have guaranteed that they’ll throw in a few surprises!

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Seymour said of the impending run of shows in a statement. “It was huge last time.

“Apart from all the songs, the crowd singing and the big band at the end, James Reyne is a very funny many not many people know that.”

Echoed Reyne: “I thoroughly enjoyed the last time we toured together and it worked a treat. Dare I say it, but there’s a fair cache of songs to play and enjoy as well. Mark’s a lovely, talented guy, so come join the fun.”

JAMES MORRISON & GUESTS PERFORMING AT YEPPOON FORESHORE

● James Morrison is, by anybody’s standard, a virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Besides the trumpet, this multi-instrumentalist also plays piano, all the brass, saxophones, and double bass.

Now 53, James Morrison’s career thus far has been diverse and perhaps not typical of most jazz musicians. He recorded Jazz Meets the Symphony with The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Lalo Schifrin, performed concerts at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for Princess Anne. Royal command performances on two occasions for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and for US Presidents Bush & Clinton at Parliament House in Australia. James has also performed his own ‘Concerto for

Euphonium’ with the Tonkünstler Orchestra at the Muskverein in Vienna.

James has been recognized for his service to the arts in Australia by being awarded a medal of The Order of Australia by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with particular mention of his contribution to music education. He is a Doctor of the University at Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has received a Doctor of Music from the Edith Cowan University Western Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Australia and Vice-Chancellor’s Professorial Fellow.

With interests so broad and a career so filled with highlights it seems that James Morrison

JAZZ LEGEND AND TRUMPET VIRTUOSO

must have done just about everything he could want to do – but not so...

When asked, “What is there left to do?” James’ reply is typically “This is just the warm up!”

● It is a delight to once again find ourselves at Village Festival time. This year, after much lobbying in Canberra, I was a particularly thrilled to announced that the Federal Government is backing the festival with a $25,000 grant through the Ministry for the Arts’ Festivals Australia program. The grant will bring Australian trumpet and jazz legend James Morrison to Yeppoon for the festival to conduct a jazz workshop with music students. Participants will then play with James at the festival’s main concert. Music and culture form an important part of the social fabric that makes up our community. I congratulate the organisers of this year’s event and encourage everyone to participate.

BOBBY ALU COAST LIFE EXHIBITION

CQUNIVERSITY

● Whether performing solo or backed by his slick & charismatic band, the Palm Royale, multi award-winning Bobby Alu is renowned for his signature hammock music & high vibes. The music, themed by Polynesia, born on the East Coast of Australia, with hints of soul, reggae & infectious rhythm, is familiar yet uniquely Bobby Alu. An accomplished songwriter & baritone ukulele strummer with a smooth & silky voice, Bobby Alu is also one of the nation’s best drummers, touring world-wide as drummer for Xavier Rudd since 2013. It has become a consistent swap for Bobby–moving from behind the drum kit to front of stage with ukulele in hand, yet in this fast-paced world Bobby manages to bring a calm, light & fresh vibe, appealing for a better world through song.

Expect a fresh, simple sound themed by ukulele, pacific beats, catchy songs, tasty harmony, and moments of chill and powerful log drumming... All performed on a bed of style.

● A stunning photographic exhibition by three Central Queensland women showcases the natural beauty and lifestyle of the Capricorn Coast. Penny Hunt, Kylie Sefton and Ashleigh Newman have curated the exhibition in a unique outdoor gallery.

The Capricorn Coast region was battered by Tropical Cyclone Marcia last February, and the women wanted to reflect the resilience of the community and Mother Nature’s ability to bounce back while celebrating local characters.

There are images of a female surfer, a local man who plays Santa Claus every year in local supermarkets, children playing, a model on horseback, and many others.

The Coast Life exhibition is on display at The Waterline Restaurant Keppel Bay Marina throughout the Festival.

● I am delighted that CQUniversity has once again come on board to be a sponsor of the Yeppoon Village Festival. But this year I am especially excited about CQUni becoming the major naming rights sponsor, an arrangement I hope to see continue as the Festival keeps growing from strength to strength into the future. CQUniversity’s support is bringing the iconic artist Pete Murray to Yeppoon, arguably one of the biggest names to have appeared on stage at a Village Festival in its 14 year history. CQUniversity brought Pete to town because we want the Village Festival to better engage with the youth of the region, and to cement the Festival’s rightful reputation as being the premier music, arts and cultural festival for the Central Queensland region.

CQUniversity is a strong advocate for the Arts, and together with Livingstone Shire Council we are developing plans to create a modern new integrated arts education, production and gallery facility right in the heart of the CBD. This infrastructure will help unlock the tremendous economic and cultural potential of the region’s creative enterprises, and it is an incredibly exciting project – so watch this space! In the meantime, we are committed to supporting the arts in Yeppoon and we hope visitors and locals alike can get out and support (and enjoy) the 2016 CQUniversity Village Festival. Also, if someone could please put in a request to Pete Murray to play ‘Better Days’, that’d be great.

The Coal Train/Undamine Industries Community Fund is proud to be a major partner of the Village Festival. We strongly believe in supporting our local Arts Community. In addition to this Coal Train sponsors other events including Pinefest, The Yeppoon Show, Australia Day, Christmas Carols, Anzac Day, The Special Children’s Christmas Party, St Brendan’s Rodeo, the Yeppoon Golf Pro Am and the Tightlines Fishing Classic. We think Central Queensland is pretty awesome and we are proud to be a part of it!

The Community Fund financed the set up and pays for the ongoing operating costs of The Coal Train House in Rockhampton (where people needing medical care stay at no cost).
