June 2008 Special EditionNewsletter

A Few Words from Mrs. Ugrin . . . James Culnan Catholic School has afforded all of us so many wonderful memories. During this 2007-2008 academic year, our students participated in a variety of liturgical, academic, athletic, and cultural ac-tivities. Liturgies with Monsignor Bianco provided us with ongoing spiritual and faith development. We thank you for coming into our school community, Monsignor. We were most fortunate to have had the privilege of meeting you, working with you and benefiting from your amazing understanding of children and education. You have welcomed our students to be active in the life of St. James Church; we are grateful for this. The Sunday morning, Children's Liturgies for our students and their parents are most appreciated by all. Our teachers continued participation in the Ontario Focused Intervention Project afforded students the benefit of excellent paedagogy in Literacy instruction. Our school community supported the Christmas An-gel Project, St. Francis Table at the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Food Drives . Our students also participated in Jump Rope for Heart this year raising funds for Heart Health Awareness. We are proud of our charitable efforts this year. Our CSAC-sponsored Dance-a-thon raised funds for various school endeavours, emergency requests, bus excursions, classroom expenditures, and a donation to SK and Grade 8 Graduations. The QSP magazine sale also provided funds for similar needs. Our parent community continues to support the mandatory Navy Blue and White Dress Code. Your continued support and commitment are critical to the success of this school community initiative. Our students represented the JCCS well at tournaments, competitions and on excursions. This year teachers coached students in soccer, basketball, volleyball, circuit training, cross country, track & field, base-ball, W5H; in addition to providing many opportunities for our students to highlight their artistic, dramatic and musical skills in performances at our Christmas and Spring Concerts. The choir performed at the TCDSB Music Festival and also sang at The Woodbine Festival. Thank you Officer Claudio for continuing to inform our students of Street Proofing, Anti-Bullying Strategies, Cyber Bullying &Internet Safety, Youth Violence, Self Esteem, Respect, Personal Safety and Elmer Safety Rules . We appreciate your presence, flexibility and the sense of community you create amongst our students. Curriculum based excursions afforded students opportunities to extend their learning outside the classroom. This year they participated in visits to the Medieval Times, Huronia, Destination Imagination in Ten-nessee, Claremont Outdoor Centre, Science Centre, Pioneer Village Matignon French Restaurant, and Neilson Creative Arts Centre. Paris, France came alive in our Library this February as Extended French students brought French language and culture to our grade 4 students and tostudents of neighbouring schools. Our JK and SK students also participated in Scribble Fest; showcasing their first attempts at writing! Students across the grades participated in Liturgies at ST. James Church, Reconciliation, First Holy

Holy Communion, Confirmation, Rosary Recitations, monthly Virtue activities, Faith Rallies, Free the Children Awareness presentations and activities, Public Speaking, Intermediate Math Contest, Provincial and Board Assessments, May Career Days, Teachers’ Tea in PALS Classroom, Crazy Hat Day, Christmas and Spring Concerts, Book Fair, Golf and Ceramic workshops, and Swim Program afforded many opportunities to enjoy the richness of James Culnan Catholic School. The awards assembly in June honoured the contributions of our students and coaches to the extracurricu-lar life of our school. Students received certificates and ribbons for their efforts. Many accumulated a great portfolio of achievements. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of so many of our staff who continue to provide extracurricular activities to our students. Our annual Yearbook is a visual testament of our support of extracurricular ac-tivities for our students. This year’s committee has compiled a wonderful array of photos of all participants, coaches and activities reflective of the spirit of James Culnan Catholic School. Our ongoing facility renewal projects are complete for this year. This summer our custodial staff will work without interruption to prepare the building for the start of a new school year in September. As another school year draws to a close, we recognize the contributions of those who are moving to new experiences within our TCDSB community: Mrs. Askin, Mrs. Bugala, Mrs. Carey, Mrs. Giordano, and Mrs. Pearman Smith. Thank you for your work with students, the school commu-nity, and your contribution to the extracurricular life of the school. While we are saddened by these staff changes, we know that educators who dedicate themselves to children seem never to be far away from the “action” We thank them and we pray for their continuing good fortune, good health and we wish them many successes in their new assignments. I extend to all members of our the James Culnan Catholic School community, students, staff, parents a prayer for safe travel, relaxation, and fun times with friends and family during this summer holiday. May God bless you. Mrs. Ugrin Principal June 2008 James Culnan Catholic School A Summer Blessing Go with God! This is my summer prayer for you. Take it with you and keep it in your mind and your heart. As you leave school for the summer, As you lay aside books, notes, pencils and pens, Go with God for God goes with you. As you enjoy the summer sun and summer’s cool blue waters, be wise, be safe. Respect the beauty of the earth as God’s gift to you. As you go to quiet places to reflect and to pray, To enjoy the peace and beauty of private space and time off, Go with God, for God always goes with you.

End of School Year Prayer O God of all beginnings and endings, we praise and thank you for the gift of this school year. It has been a time filled with grace and blessings, with challenges and op-portunities, joys and sorrows. The days have passed quickly, O Lord. The weeks, months, the seasons, the holi-days, and holy days, the tests, vacations, breaks and assemblies, all have come forth from your hand. While we trust that your purposes have always been at work each day, sometimes it has seemed difficult to understand and appreciate just what you have been upto in our school. Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer. Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit. Bring all our plans to a yoyful conclusion, And bless us, according to your will. With the fulfillment of our summer hopes and dreams, watch over us in the weeks of rest ahead, and guide each day as you have done this past year. Help us to return to school with a new spirit and a new energy. May we continue to grow in age, wisdom, Knowledge and grace, all the days of our lives. Amen.

It has been a very productive year for the James Culnan Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC). Once again this year the annual dance-a-thon fundraiser was a tremendous suc-cess. The funds raised helped us provide financial support to a variety of school activities and to help defer some of the expenses teachers incurred over the course of the year. We’re looking forward to an active 2008/2009 school year and invite all parents to become active members of our CSAC. Join us to share your ideas and help us make James Culnan the best it can be for our children. Our first meeting of the new school year will be held on Tuesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. in the staff room. Our meetings are held monthly and the following dates have been selected for the 2008/2009 school year:

September 9 September 23 October 21 November 18 December 9 January 6 January 20 February 3 February 24 April 21 May 26 June 16 Please come out and join us … everyone is welcome! Congratulations to the students and teachers of James Culnan Catholic School for another successful year … we wish you all a happy and safe summer break. The James Culnan CSAC
