James Cannon Zabriskie Born about 1804-1813 in New Jersey; Died in 1883 in San Francisco 1826: marriage to Elizabeth W. Mann in Middlesex, New Jersey 1842: marriage to Mary M. (or Mary B.) Hancock in Trenton, New Jersey
September 8, 1857: The report that the citizens of “Live Oak” in this county [Sacramento], are about to change the name of the place to “Zabriskieville” is entirely without foundation, they have changed their minds.” “Zabriskie, then the city attorney in Sacramento and son-in-law of Governor Neely Johnson, moved to San Francisco. Honored by the Polish community, he received from Rudolf Korwin Piotrowski a quartz and gold walking stick. But the native of Hackensack, New Jersey, never actually dug for gold in Live Oak or anywhere else.” [From The 49er, The Diva, and The Scribbler]
J.C. Zabriskie came to California about 1849

The Zabriskie family moved from New Jersey to California in 1849. Mary’s father, James C. Zabriskie, settled the family in Sacramento to practice law. Mary married Colonel J. Neely Johnson on June 26, 1851. They had two children. Upon being elected governor in 1856, J. Neely Johnson and Mary held the first gubernatorial inaugural ball in California. Mary was a leader in Sacramento society and well fitted for the role of First Lady. In 1859, the family moved to Carson City, Nevada Territory, where J. Neely ran the Bowers Mine. After his death, Mary married Colonel Sylvester H. Day and lived in Carson City, Nevada for the remainder of her life. Mary Johnson died on November 23, 1888.
