Revised 2-16-18 James Bowie H.S. - Elective Course Descriptions 2018-2019 Working Draft Accounting 1 (Grades 11-12) In this course students will investigate the field of accounting and engage in the process of recording, classifying, summarizing, analyzing, and communicating accounting information. Students will formulate and interpret financial information for use in management decision-making and gain experience, using QuickBooks. *Prerequisite: Business Information Management Accounting 2 (Grades 11-12) Students continue the investigation of the field of accounting, including how it is impacted by industry standards as well as economic, financial, technological, international, social, legal, and ethical factors. Students reflect on this knowledge as they engage in various managerial and cost accounting activities. Students formulate and interpret financial information for use in management decision-making. *Prerequisite: Accounting 1 Advanced Animal Science (Grade 12) This class will focus on different detailed functions of plant and animal science as it pertains to the agriculture industry and businesses of today. This class is for a 4 th year science credit and will require 40% of class time in a lab setting and or field trips. *Prerequisite: Veterinary Medical Applications. Advanced Art I (Grade 9) This course explores the basic foundation of the art process, procedures, theories, history and art judgment. This is an advanced Art I class designed for students with two or more years of middle school art. Students will experiment with different materials (drawing, painting, printmaking, fibers, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, photography). *Prerequisite: 2 Years of Visual Arts in Middle School and Teacher Approval Anatomy and Physiology (Grades 11-12) The class is recommended for those pursuing a career in the health science field. An emphasis is placed on the homeostatic and interrelatedness of the different systems of the body. There is a pig dissection during the second semester. Another important emphasis of the class is ethics: bio-medical ethics and ethics involving medicine and the law. *Prerequisite: Chemistry Animation I (Grades 10-12) Get educated using technology to express yourself with art and motion. Learn how to animate your own digital media in Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, and in 3D. Use light tables for traditional animation, SLR cameras for stop motion, green screens and HD video cameras for special effects, and i5 Macs for all of the amazing software. *Prerequisite: Graphic Design & Illustration 1 Recommended Animation II (Grades 11 – 12) Careers in animation span all aspects of motion graphics. Within this context, in addition to developing advanced knowledge and skills needed for success in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications career cluster, students will be expected to create two- and three-dimensional animations. Students should be prepared to become enlightened international news junkies! *Prerequisite: AP US History Recommended AP Computer Science (Grades 10-12) TBD This course prepares students to design and implement solutions to problems by writing, running, and debugging computer programs. The course emphasizes programming methodology, procedural abstraction, and in-depth study of algorithms, data structures, and data abstractions. Students will code fluently in an object-oriented paradigm using Java. *Prerequisite: Computer Science 1 AP Environmental Science (Grades 10-12) This course covers nearly every aspect of living in the world. Topics range from disease transmission, to weather patterns, all the way to global economy. All of these areas affect or are affected by the environment. *Prerequisites: Chemistry (or concurrent w/ Chemistry) and Teacher Approval AP History of Art (Grades 10-12) This introductory college level course provides the student with an understanding and knowledge of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within diverse historical and cultural contexts. Students examine and critically analyze major forms of artistic expression from the past and the present from a variety of cultures. Art history also emphasizes understanding works in contexts, considering such issues as patronage, gender, and the functions and effects of works of art. Requires a high degree of commitment to academic work to meet college standards. *Prerequisite: Teacher Approval AP Human Geography ½ credit (Grades 11-12) The purpose of the AP course in Human Geography is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth's surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscape analysis to examine human social organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice. AP Music Theory (Grades 11-12) Through the course, students develop the ability to recognize, understand, and describe basic materials and processes of tonal music that are heard or presented in a score. Development of aural skills is a primary objective. Performance is also part of the curriculum through the practice of sight singing. Students understand basic concepts and terminology by listening to and performing a wide variety of music. Notational skills, speed, and fluency with basic materials are also emphasized. *Prerequisite: Teacher Approval AP Studio Art and Drawing (Grade 12) Students develop a portfolio addressing a very broad interpretation of drawing issues and media. Light, shade, line quality, rendering of form, composition, surface manipulation, and illusion of depth can be addressed. Abstract, observational, and inventive works through a variety of means, which could include painting, printmaking, mixed media, etc. may be used. Work will be divided into three sections of the portfolio including quality, concentration, and breadth. *Prerequisite: Art III (Drawing II) and Teacher Approval AP Studio Art: 3-D Design (Grade 12) Students develop a portfolio addressing sculptural issues. Portfolios will demonstrate an understanding of design principles as they relate to depth and space through any 3-D approach including figurative or nonfigurative. Mediums and processes could include sculpture, architectural models, metal work, ceramics, and three dimensional fiber arts. Work will be divided into three sections of the portfolio including quality, concentration and breadth. *Prerequisite: Art III (Sculpture II) and Teacher Approval Aquatic Science (Grades 10–12)

Students will study the interactions of biotic and abiotic components in aquatic environments, including impacts on aquatic systems. Investigations and field work in this course will emphasize fresh water or marine aspects of aquatic science by taking a field trip to Mary Moore Seawright Park to test for water quality and a trip to the coast to look at marine organisms. Students will also learn about freshwater and marine ecology. The second semester of the course is devoted to studying marine organisms and their environments. *Prerequisite: Chemistry Recommended Art I (Grades 9-12) This course lays the basic foundation for learning art processes, procedures, theories, history, and art judgment. The approach is experimental in use of materials (drawing, painting, printmaking, fibers, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, photography) but structured to provide students with a strong foundation in design, drawing, and vocabulary. Biotechnology 1 (Grades 11 – 12) This class is designed in cooperation with ACC's Biotechnology Program through which you may earn one hour of credit in escrow. It is designed to prepare students for work in the Biotechnology field; therefore, students will be expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Students will learn good lab practices (GLP), standardized reporting methods, and many biotechnology techniques currently utilized in industry from DNA extraction to Forensic Science. *Prerequisite: Biology and Chemistry Business Information Management (Grades 9-12) In this honors weighted course, students will implement software skills required by colleges and competitive work environments. Students will apply technical skills to create professional documents, develop dynamic spreadsheets, formulate databases, and make electronic presentations using the Microsoft Office Suite. Business Management (Grade 12) Students develop a foundation in the economic, financial, technological, international, social, and ethical aspects of business to become competent managers, employees, and entrepreneurs. Students incorporate a broad base of knowledge that includes the legal, managerial, marketing, financial, ethical, and international dimensions of business to make appropriate management decisions. Students will learn through reality based group and individual projects, studying current events, online research, and running a virtual business simulation. *Prerequisite: Accounting I Chamber Winds (Grades 9-12) This course concentrates on small chamber assessment and individual performance technique. Students must be enrolled in a wind ensemble in order to be considered for this class. No student can just be registered for this class without having an additional Wind Ensemble section as well. Special circumstances should be discussed with the Director of Bands before placement in this class. *Prerequisite: Teacher Approval Child Development (Grades 10-12) Come play with us! We study the process of human development from pregnancy to newborns to teenagers. In addition, we explore careers related to the support and education of children. Yes, we have the babies, but it’s purely optional! *Prerequisite: Business Information Management Recommended Choir (Grades 9-12) The Bowie Choir Department offers several classes designed to prepare students for a variety of concerts, performance productions, tours, and competitions throughout the school year. Choir students learn to read music, produce a healthy and beautiful vocal tone, and be part of a team of outstanding vocal musicians. To meet the very high standards of the program, students are expected to adhere to strict standards of attendance, behavior, and engagement in learning. Admission requires a meeting with the directors, but is open to all. Classical Guitar I-IV (Grades 9-12) Students develop guitar techniques and study guitar literature. *Prerequisite: Middle school guitar recommended and/ or teacher approval for placement

Color Guard 1 & 2 (Grades 9 – 10) An audition based course that includes beginner/intermediate ballet, modern, and jazz dances, as well as flag technique. Students perform in football games, competitions, and winder guard. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Audition in November and May. Counts as a Fine Arts credit. Color Guard 3 & 4 (Grades 10 - 12) An audition based course that includes intermediate/advanced dance techniques as well as rifle, sabre, and flag techniques. Computer Science 1 (Grades 9-12) Students will collaborate with one another, their instructor, and various electronic communities to solve the problems presented throughout the course. Through data analysis, students will identify task requirements, plan search strategies, and use computer science concepts to access, analyze, and evaluate information needed to solve problems *Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Computer Science or Completion of Algebra I Computer Science 2 (Grades 10-12) A continuation of Computer Science I, Computer Science II will foster students' creativity and innovation by presenting opportunities to design, implement, and present meaningful programs through a variety of media. *Prerequisite: Computer Science 1 Computer Science 3 (Grades 11-12) TBD In Computer Science III students will further their study of technological applications. Students will extend practice of the use of technology-related concepts and terms as well as data input strategies such as the creation of discovery programs in low-level, high-level, and scripting languages as well as creating a small workgroup network. Students will work individually and collaboratively to evaluate information, apply technology as a tool for problem solving, and communicate information in different formats to a diverse group of audiences. *Prerequisite: Computer Science 2 or AP Computer Science Contemporary American Novel (Grades 10-12) In this class we will explore novels written by various American masters in the past thirty years. We will analyze these brilliant and important masterpieces with a variety of class projects and activities. If you love to read and like contemporary fiction, this is the class for you. *Prerequisite: English II (10th w/ Teacher Approval) Commercial Photography 1 (Grades 10-12) Students will develop skills that span all aspects of commercial photography from setting up a shot to delivering process in a competitive product *Prerequisite: Photo 1 (Principles of Arts/ AV Tech & Comm.), Teacher Approval, and DSLR Camera Commercial Photography 2 (Grades 11-12) Students will develop skills that span all aspects of commercial photography from setting up a shot to delivering process in a competitive product. Students will be expected to develop an advanced technical understanding of the commercial photography industry with a focus on producing, promoting, and presenting professional quality photographs. *Prerequisite: Commercial Photography 1, Teacher Approval, and DSLR Camera Contemporary Issues (Grades 11-12) Students study issues that have affected the United States since World War II, such as the Cold War, nuclear proliferation, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Vietnam Conflict. They also study issues in the daily news and develop a present a formal research project. *Prerequisite: Teacher Approval

Creative Writing I & II (Grades 11-12) This rigorous workshop-seminar provides experience in writing in several genres. Students engage in an editing and revision process designed to produce error-free compositions suitable for publishing. Students examine important examples of literature in relevant genres as models and as subjects for technical analysis. Students also will collect and present literary discoveries from their own reading and writing. *Prerequisite: English 2 Culinary Arts 1- 2 credits (Grades 11-12) A 2 credit class with a professional focus designed to develop the skills needed for entry into the food service industry or to prepare students for training in a post-secondary culinary school with real-world experience. *Prerequisite: Family Studies, Lifetime Nutrition & Wellness, and Teacher Approval Culinary Restaurant Management (Grade 12) *Must be Co-Enrolled w/ Practicum This class is for second year students with an interest in the management and financial aspects of the culinary industry. Students in this class learn and apply skills including scheduling, inventory, purchasing, costing and event planning. Students finalize all event recipe sets and write the master production schedules providing an outstanding way to learn the operation of a small business. *Prerequisite: Culinary Arts 1 and Teacher Approval Dance 1-Aerobic Dance (Grades 9 – 12) No dance experience needed. You will learn the basics of jazz, contemporary, modern, ballet, tap, hip hop and choreography. There are TWO performance opportunities, the Winter Dance Showcase and the Silver Stars Spring Show. You will receive a Fine Arts or PE credit for the course. Dance 2-4 (Grades 9 – 12) Some dance experience required. You will learn intermediate to advanced jazz, contemporary, modern, ballet, tap, hip hop, and choreography. There are TWO performance opportunities, the Winter Dance Showcase and the Silver Stars Spring Show. You will receive a fine arts or PE credit for this course. *Prerequisite: Audition Required Dance Choreography/Improvisation (Grades 11-12) An upper level course for students interested in the choreographic process, dance for film, site-specific work, and improvisation. Students will create and show work at the Winter Concert. Prerequisite: Dance 2, Dance 3, Dance 4, and Teacher Approval Dance Wellness (Grades 10 – 12) No dance experience needed. You will learn mind/body techniques like yoga and Pilates and focus on social and emotional learning. There are NO performance opportunities. You will receive a fine arts credit for this course. Debate 1-4 (Grades 9-12) This course involves the introduction to the different forms of Debate and public speaking with an emphasis on Public Forum Debate and Lincoln Douglas Debate. Students will be actively participating in class daily; this is definitely not a lecture course. This class will give students the opportunity to hone their argumentative skills in a structured setting and use them to compete in the classroom as well as for the Texas Forensic Association and UIL events. Attendance at debate competitions is required, so students must be willing to commit to some weekend events. Drawing I- III (Grades 10-12) Students explore design elements and principles through composition, abstraction, and expression. They also study contour gesture and other techniques with an emphasis on representation volume. They will explore use of papers, cardboards and fabric in combination with charcoal, pastels, pen and ink, brushes, felt tips and mixed media. Various styles of paintings, including contemporary paintings are analyzed. Students experiment with a variety of techniques and materials including tempera, synthetic media, watercolor, latex, and enamels on various surfaces such as cardboard, poster board, Masonite, canvas, and cloth

Equine Science ½ credit (Grades 10-12) *Must be taken w/ Small Animal Management This class will cover the anatomy and physiology of equine animals in great detail and will teach students the importance of the equine industry. Students will learn about industry standards regarding the welfare and protection of animals, such as horses, donkeys, and mules, and will be given an opportunity to compare and contrast issues affecting the equine industry. *Prerequisite: Principles of Ag, Food, & Natural Resources Family Studies ½ credit (Grades 10-12) *Must be taken with Lifetime, Nutrition, & Wellness This course examines how the relationships between individuals and among family members significantly affect the quality of life. Students use knowledge and skills in family studies and human development to enhance personal development, foster quality relationships, promote wellness of family members, manage multiple adult roles, and pursue careers related to counseling and mental health services. *Prerequisites: Business Information Management Recommended Engineering Design and Problem Solving (Grade 12) Hands on course developed by the University of Texas faculty and NASA engineers where students design, build, launch solutions to real-world engineering challenges. Students will learn design process, modeling, specifications, and product evolution. *Prerequisites: Algebra II, Chemistry, and Physics Freshman Band (Grade 9) This course is only offered for incoming 9th grade students. Students must have participated in previous band at their middle schools. There can be no student who has never played an instrument or who has quit band the previous year allowed in the class. *Prerequisite: Middle School Band Fundamentals of Computer Science (Grades 9-12) This is intended as a first course for those students just beginning the study of computer science. Students will learn about the computing tools that are used every day. Students will collaborate and use computer science concepts to access, analyze, and evaluate information needed to solve problems. By using computer science knowledge and skills that support the work of individuals and groups in solving problems, students will select the technology appropriate for the task, synthesize knowledge, create solutions, and evaluate the results. Students will learn digital citizenship by researching current laws and regulations and by practicing integrity and respect. This course does not count for Language other than English credit. Graphic Design & Illustration 1 (Grade 9-12) Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in careers in the advertising, communication, and audio- visual industries. *Prerequisite: Principles of Arts, AV Tech, & Comm. or successful completion of Reading & Writing STAAR Graphic Design & Illustration 2 (Grades 10-12) In addition to the skills learned in year one, students will employ leadership, teamwork, and conflict-management skills to prepare for a career in the graphic design industry. Students will be expected to exhibit ethical conduct, apply copyright laws, model respect for intellectual property, and demonstrate proper etiquette and knowledge of acceptable use policies. *Prerequisite: Graphic Design and Illustration 1 Horticulture Science (Grades 10-12) TBD Horticultural Science is designed to develop an understanding of common horticultural management practices as they relate to food and ornamental plant production. To prepare for careers in horticultural systems, students must attain academic skills and knowledge, acquire technical knowledge and skills related to horticulture and the workplace, and develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, entry requirements and industry

To prepare for success, students need opportunities to learn, reinforce, apply, and transfer their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings. *Prerequisite: Principles of Ag, Food, & Natural Resources Hospitality Services- 2 credits (Grades 11-12) This is an internship program which actually has its classroom at Barton Creek Resort and Spa and the Hilton Hotel Downtown! You will receive hands on training in 5 departments of your choice. Transportation provided. College Credit. *Prerequisite: Family Studies, Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness, and Teacher Approval Intro to Engineering Design (Grade 9-10) TBD The major focus of this course is to expose students to the design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards and technical documentation. *Prerequisite: Algebra I Jazz Band I-IV (Grades 9-12) Students develop jazz techniques and study jazz literature. Wind and percussion players must be enrolled in a regular band class. Guitar, electric bass, and keyboard players need not be enrolled in a regular band or orchestra. Each section is based off the skill ability and ensemble balance. *Prerequisite: Audition only Journalism I (Grades 9-12) Beginning writers, photographers, graphic designers and film makers receive “boot camp” training in journalism field skills, including: blogging and writing articles for news, features, editorial column, entertainment and sports writing. Students also use still and video cameras to record and edit images using state-of-the-art software and technology to create print and online publications. Junior Reserve Officer Training (JROTC) 1-4 (Grades 9- 12) This program teaches Aerospace Science, Leadership Education and Wellness. Community Service is an integral part of JROTC. Extra-curricular teams include Marksmanship, Drill, Physical Training, Orienteering, and Rocketry. JROTC stresses the whole-person concept: citizen, athlete, and scholar. There is no military service commitment associated with high school JROTC. JV Dance Team- Star Dancers (Grades 9-12) The Star Dancers is an exciting dance performance team that includes Bowie students in grades 9th- 12th who perform at an intermediate level. The purpose of the Star Dancers is to provide a positive high school experience through dance. Star Dancers will encourage loyal school spirit, high academic standards, and high moral values among its members. As a team, we will work on the development of dance technique, self-confidence, self-discipline, and sportsmanship in each member. Star Dancers is the perfect choice for Bowie students who want to balance their passion for dance with time for other academic or extracurricular activities. Performances required. *Prerequisite: Audition required Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness ½ credit (Grades 10-12) *Must be taken with Family Studies Eating healthfully doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or boring! Enjoy the fun of a cooking class that emphasizes nutrition and making healthy food choices. Learn practical food choice tips and see how to make simple recipes that will inspire you to feed yourself and others. Eat well for life! Marching Band (Grades 9-12) This course has a large amount of outside school day and weekend commitments. We do not rehearse at school because of facility shortage, so transportation to and from is vital. *Prerequisite: Must be enrolled in Wind Ensemble, Freshman Band, or Color Guard Medical Microbiology (Grades 11 & 12) Explore a new world through a microscope. Medical Microbiology involves 1) hands on lab methods in isolation and identification of microbes and 2) student designed research in bacteriology and virology. Pathophysiology involves units in infectious disease and world health, immunology, genetics & bioinformatics, and lifestyle related diseases. Due to lab requirements, most course work completed in class.

Hands-on experience, in-class projects, computer lab. Content is relevant to your life now and beyond. *Prerequisite: Principles of Business, Marketing & Finance Recommended Musical Theatre I- IV (Grades 9-12) Musical Theatre will expose students to a wide range of on-stage performance disciplines, including acting performance, vocal performance, and dance performance. The course will also provide an atmosphere in which students benefit from a teaching and learning experience in these performance disciplines of musical theatre. Basic music skills and singing experience are highly recommended but NOT required. *Prerequisite: Before a student can advance to the next level theatre course, they must complete any previous level theatre course. Musical Theater Dance (Grades 9-12) No dance experience needed. You will learn basic dance technique in jazz, ballet, and tap and focus on Broadway style dance. There are TWO performance opportunities, the Winter Dance Showcase and the Silver Stars Spring Show. You will receive a PE credit for this course. Newspaper 2-4/ Graphic Design and Illustration (Grades 10 -12) A continuation of Newspaper I, students will work on producing and editing the Bowie Dispatch and work on skills that will prepare them for a career in journalism. *Prerequisite: Photo 1 and Teacher Approval Oral Interpretation 1-4 (Grades 9-12) This year-long, introductory course explores the fundamentals of oral interpretation with self-selected pieces of literature as communication art. Percussion (Grades 9-12) This course is offered to students in all grade levels who are percussionists from their previous middle or high school. Staff travels to district, state, and national journalism competitions that support scholastic journalism *Prerequisite: Teacher Approval and Must Pass STAAR Reading & Writing Piano I (Grades 9-12) In Piano I, students will learn to play the piano, develop music-reading abilities, appreciate music from a wide variety of sources, and apply basic music theory concepts to create songs and musical compositions. No prior piano or musical knowledge is needed to take the class, but students should be prepared to practice diligently on pianos provided at the school. Piano 2 (Grades 10-12) In Piano II, students will learn intermediate concepts in music theory, continue developing piano skills, and write

Practicum in Commercial Photography- 2 Credits (Grade 12) -------------------- *Prerequisite: Commercial Photography 2, Teacher Approval, and DSLR Camera Practicum in Culinary Arts- 2 Credits (Grade 12) A 2 credit class that continues and extends the training and skill development from Culinary Arts. Practicum in Hospitality Services- 2 credits (Grade 12) This is an internship program which is an extension to year one. You will learn traditional drill team technique in preparation for Silver Stars. This class will provide jazz, ballet, and high kick technique that is required for Silver Stars auditions. Principles of Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources (Grades 9-10) Introduction class that will allow students to look at where our food and fibers come from, as well as cover leadership skills, Plant and Animal Science, Small Business, and History of Agriculture. Students will explore careers in the Agriculture industries and gain the skills and knowledge to succeed in the Agriculture Pathway here at Bowie High School. Principles of Arts, A/V Tech & Communication (Grades 9-10) Careers in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications career cluster require, in addition to creative aptitude, a strong background in computer and technology applications, a strong academic foundation, and a proficiency in oral and written communication. Within this context, students will be expected to develop an understanding of the various and multifaceted career opportunities in this cluster and the knowledge, skills, and educational requirements for those opportunities. Principles of Business, Marketing and Finance (Grades 9-10) Provides a general introduction to the economic, financial, international, social, legal and ethical aspects of business, as well as marketing, personal finance and basic career investigation. Students learn through reality-based individual and group projects, studying current events, online research and running a virtual business simulation. Principles of Engineering (Grade 10-11) Principles of Engineering is an engineering survey course designed to expose students to some of the major concepts that they will encounter in a postsecondary engineering course of study. Students have an opportunity to investigate engineering and high-tech careers. In Principles of Engineering, students will employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of engineering design problems. Students will develop problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges. Students will also learn how to document their work and communicate their solutions to their peers and members of the professional community.

Ready, Set, Teach! - 2 credits (Grades 11-12) Field-based internship, which provides students an opportunity to work under the joint direction and supervision of both a Child Development teacher and exemplary educators in direct instructional roles with elementary students. Students plan and direct individualized instruction and group activities, prepare instructional materials, assist with record keeping, make physical arrangements, and complete other responsibilities of classroom teachers. The students are involved in observations as well as direct student instruction. *Prerequisite: Child Development Science Fiction and Fantasy (Grades 11-12) This course will focus on the popular genres of science fiction and fantasy. Students will examine the history, structure, and impact these stories have had on our culture as well as how these stories address ethical questions and represent elements of the human psyche. If you love the stories of "far, far away", this is the course for you. *Prerequisite: English 2 Science Research & Design (Grades 11 & 12) This class will be involved in cancer research, mapping protein interactions in cancer cells. The course will be partnered with a Freshmen Research Initiative class at UT and will involve collaboration with the labs, professor, and teaching assistants at the UT lab. Science Research & Design 2 (Grade 12) ----------------------- *Prerequisite: Scientific Research & Design Sculpture I- III (Grades 10-12) Students study design elements and principles of form and positive-negative space. They explore additive and subtractive processes utilizing various techniques with firebrick, wood, foam, glass, clay and plaster. *Prerequisite: Before a student can advance to the next level Art course, they must complete any previous level art course. Silver Stars (Grades 10-12) This is an audition based course for students who have auditioned and made the Silver Star Drill Team. Students must be academically eligible to take this course. Students perform at football games, contests, Winter Concert, and Spring Show. Auditions will be held in March. *Prerequisites: Teacher Approval Small Animal Management- ½ Credit (Grades 10- 12) *Must be Taken w/ Equine Science This class will cover the anatomy and physiology of small animals in great detail and how all animals are used in the human world. This class will have dissections of different animals during the year to study the anatomy of animals and pathogenic organisms. *Sports Trainer Approval Required Steel Drums (Grades 9-12) A trip to the Carribean every day! No prior experience necessary. Everyone is welcome who has a desire to play music! This course is open to any student on campus. Requirements for the course are prior musical knowledge, and it is preferred that you have played a musical instrument or steel drums prior to registering for the class There are special circumstances where a student may not meet the requirements, but in that situation the student must set up a time to meet with the Steel Drums Director. There are three sections of this class: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. All 9th grade students should be enrolled in Basic. Any other grade level must have written instruction of class placement from a director. Street Law ½ Credit (Grades 11 -12) A fun social studies elective, which covers all aspects of criminal and civil law. Technical Theatre I-IV (Grades 9-12) This course includes an overview of technical theatre and the beginning study of construction and operation of scenery, properties, lighting instruments, makeup, sound, and public relations programs. *Prerequisite: Before a student can advance to the next level theatre course, they must complete any previous level theatre course. Technical Theatre I- Advanced (Grades 9-12) *Teacher Approval Required This class is specifically for students who have previous experience in technical theatre. The curriculum has been modified so that the students with previous experience have the opportunity to expand upon their current skill set and improve in areas they are less familiar with. Students can interview for the class with a resume or portfolio. Theatre Arts I-IV (Grades 9-12) An overview of theatre arts, basic acting techniques, and introduction to stagecraft. This course includes instruction in acting techniques, stagecraft, use of body and voice, characterization, interpretation of scripts and characters, production style, career education, and a variety of theatrical forms. Upper level students will have the opportunity to study mime, dance, drama, theatre for children, musical theatre, radio, television, film, and career options. In addition to the regular curriculum, students will be required to complete extra work for weighted credit. *Prerequisite: Before a student can advance to the next level theatre course, they must complete any previous level theatre course. Theatre Arts 1- Advanced (Grade 9) *Audition only A year-long advanced foundational class is designed for students that have theatre arts experience from middle school. Advanced Theatre I provides opportunities for students to develop skills in critical listening and thinking, as well as stage presence, ensemble work, and aesthetic awareness. Advanced Theatre I is students’ opportunity to really focus on characterization of performance, building their vocal tools, experiment with movement, and gaining confidence in their stage presence. A student must audition in April to be placed in this course. Theatre Production I- IV(Grades 9-12) This year-long after school class is designed for students planning to participate in the after-school productions of Starlight Theatre Company as an actor or technician. Students are highly encouraged to take an academic Theatre Arts or Technical Theatre course in conjunction with Production I. This course meets outside regular school hours for rehearsal (typically 4:30-6:30 p.m.), technical workdays (Wednesday afternoons and some Saturdays), and performance blocks. Practicum in Ag- Veterinary Medicine- 2 Credits (Grade 12) 2 credit class Double Block class.
