Jai Jinendra and Pranam!
Respected Society Members,
Last three months have been most exhilarating in our lives. With one event after another at Temple, our transition from Spring to Summer seemed almost non-existent. Below are the events and related stats which have taken place within our Society off late.
Shri Navvanu Prakari Puja was held on April 14th, 2013 and was well attended by the society members who enjoyed the Swamivatsalya Lunch. Many thanks to all the puja sponsors.
This year's Ayambil Oli from 04/17/13 to 04/25/13 was observed by 55 members and many thanks to all the volunteers who helped and served the tapasvis.
Mahavir Janm Kalyanak's auspicious event was celebrated on April 27th, 2013. Program included Snatra Puja, presentation by EC/BOT, recognition of Bhavesh and Shivani Shah family for their dedicated help every weekend for pakshaal, Niral Peenal Shah for completing 99 Yatra, Tarangben Kalpeshbhai Shah for her commendable work in getting the temple library organized and running and finally an "Anonymous" member's support in Temple window cleaning, carpet cleaning and replacing light bulbs in all the chandeliers. HTHY drive was huge success and members pledged over $12,000. All this was followed by delicious Swamivatsalya.
Shri Ashtapad Tirth Ni Puja was held on May 12th, 2013 and was attended by over 125 society members which was followed by Swamivatsalya Lunch. Many thanks to all the puja sponsors.
Jai Jinendra!

On June 2nd, 2013 kids, parents and teachers celebrated Hindi Sankriti Divas outdoors for the first time since inception. Good food, fun and games were incorporated with awards. Kudos to all who make Hindi language learning possible for our kids. Father’s Day Picnic on 06/16/13 had a record turnout of over 450 society members on a perfect day of weather. Ankit Shah lead a team of over 25 strong volunteers who ensured that kids, youth and elders are treated like royals. Non-stop flow of food and snacks provided enough energy and strength to play games, sing, dance and chit-chat with friends. It provided much needed break for all hard working Temple Anniversary and JAINA volunteers. 15th Temple Anniversary started on June 21st and Snatra Puja was followed by Swamivatsalya Lunch. In the evening, JAB competitors from Moksha, Nirjara, Nirvana and Arihant teams gave attendees a nerve wrecking, exciting, high octane and tense preview of what they would experience during JAINA. On June 22nd, Shri Nayanbhai Sanghvi (Surat, India) conducted the auspicious vidhis for 18 Abhishek. Nayanbhai's melodious and "Bhaav Sangeet" was supported by musicians Shri Dipbhai Sanghvi (CA) and Shri Ketanbhai Dave (MI). Beautiful Murtis for JAINA Jinalay were brought to temple with procession, pokhana and pravesh. Bhavna by Nayanbhai in the evening had the attendees singing chorus all along with hands never stopping to clap. On June 23rd, Dhwaja Ceremony was attended by over 400 members who were served delicious Swamivatsalya lunch by BOT members and their spouses. We cannot thank enough all the volunteers who were present as and when needed during these three days. After all the above events, not a single volunteer showed fatigue. As a matter of fact, the preparations for JAINA D-Day began in "pedal to metal" phase. From June 30
th to July 4
th JSGD had Shibir organized by JAANA. On July 3rd,
Convention Core Committee and Board Members initiated the early registration process at SCS, Novi. From July 4th to July 7th, convention was attended by close to 3500 individuals from various parts of the world. Respected and venerable Saints, Monks, Preachers, Speakers and highly valued guests made the event vibrant and filled the air with Jainism - and it's Globact Impact. What an impact indeed! Many congratulations to vision and leadership of Convention Core Committee members Shri Vastupalbhai Shah, Shri Rajendrabhai Modi, Shri Nalinbhai Shah, Shri Nirnajanbhai Shah and Shri Prafulbhai Shah. Event was a huge success and raised the bar to a level which will challenge all future convention hosts to top it. All this would not have been possible without relentless hard work of hundreds of volunteers. We salute every single volunteer and it gives us pride to represent our esteemed society which stood united when needed the most. Amongst all the the celebrations happening, we also need to celebrate life of our beloved Kakibaa (Mrs. Surajben R. Doshi) who peacefully passed away in her sleep on June 2nd, 2013. Kakibaa was the senior most member of not only our society but also of entire Jain population in USA. She was 109 years old who taught us how to live the centenarian healthy life with discipline, faith and spiritual learning. She has been an inspiration in our life and has touched the soul of every single person who came in her contact. May hear soul meet eternal peace! Finally, every member is urged to attend the Swadhyay by Pandit Shri Nirmal Sagarji starting August 2nd through August 11th, participate in Uvvasgharam Pujan on August 4th to be followed by Swamivatsalya Lunch and join the Yatra starting August 16th through August 18th. “Jai Jinendra and Pranam: On April 27 at the Mahavir Jain Kalyanak Day celebration, Jayprakash Shah, Chairman on behalf of the Board of Trustees 2013 reported as follow: Highlights of the report included financial statement, annual fundraising event and future long term planning. Chairman stated that the state of society is very good. The society has over $1.1 Million in current asset with over $100,000 in surplus (income less expenses). Annual fundraising event was a grand success not only in member inter action with over 400 members attending but also their generosity that yielded $142,000 in cash and pledges. We thank all the members for keeping the society financially healthy and spiritually robust. As part of the long term plan Chairman shared the conceptual architectural plans for the 12,000 sq. ft. Temple annex. The annex design provides campus master plan including an easy access. Annex concept includes Jain School with twelve class rooms and suites for visiting scholars and seniors. It also includes new accommodation for Pujari family to avoid spending high maintenance on the current replace old house that was built 50+ years ago. Following the presentation members were offered 3-D views of the new annex for more clarity.
Subsequently on May 19 with cooperation from Mahendrabhai and Vinaybhai the concept plans were presented at the study class assembly. A good feedback from children, parents and teachers that included improvement suggestions as well. Plans are displayed at the temple and further member feedback is encouraged. May thanks to all the members on behalf of the Board of Trustees.”
Note: On Saturday July 6 our Society had hosted a dinner for the Jaina guests (3500+) visiting from various Jain Centers around USA and abroad attending the JAINA convention.

JAB Event at JAINA First time in last 7+ years, JSGD study class students had participated with 4 teams namely "Detroit-Arihant,
Detroit-Moksha, Detroit-Nirjara and Detroit-Nirvan" in Jain Academic Bowl at the 17th Biannual Jaina
Convention.
Input of time, energy and effort by everyone (coaches, participants and parents) over past 8+ months paid off to
a memorable competition showcasing Jainism knowledge that they gained over the time period.
It’s not about winning or losing but as said by Gandhiji - “Satisfaction lies in the efforts, not in the attainment,
full efforts is full victory” and was truly demonstrated by all participants during the competition.
Below are few comments from participants of our center:
"Lesson learnt during this JAB journey will be really helpful for kids in their real life as well."
'The true meaning of JAB was to work in collaboration with kids our age from around North America. This is
why JAB was a success- we made many friends from around USA and truly enjoyed this experience. "
"I am all in for JAB two years from now. I think we really have chance to bring home the gold next time."
"I want to thank the coach with all of my heart. It was due to their hard work and dedication that we now know
so much about Jainism."
"I made many great memories from JAB that I will never forget. We all worked very hard and all of our efforts
paid off. We played very well... and I'm sure we will win next time."
We hope to continue this journey and bring on-board additional memories by representing JSGD in future JAB
competitions at the convention.

JOY recently held the first ever Faith to Face event at the Jain Temple. We invited people from all different religions to come to our temple, learn about Jainism, and have a discussion. We had a great turnout, around 70 people from all different religions and ethnicities. After the tour of the temple, we had a discussion about the influence of Non-Violence in other religions as well as Jainism, and helped people to become more aware and knowledgeable about the world around them. Overall, it was a great experience, and everyone had a wonderful time. JOY is also planning on having a reunion, lock-in, temple clean-up, and community service events over the summer, so keep an eye out for any of those. Helping the Local Community of our new home in the USA. Lo and Behold, the Nepalese, our neighbors, as Indians. The Nepalese Our neighbors as Detroiters. People of Nepalese origin, who used to live in Bhutan, have now relocated in the Lansing and Grand rapids areas of Michigan. The adults of the community are working various jobs as available, practicing English as a second language. The young adults are attending colleges acquiring skill sets to be professionals. The children, ages 5-15 years are settling in their new found freedom and going to regular school, but were lacking in things to do with their friends after school. Recognizing this need, the Jain Society of Greater Detroit organized a TOY DRIVE through the Jain Study Class. With welcoming hearts and hands, the Jains of Greater Detroit collected 270 lbs of toys, about 20 medium sized boxes. Surprising most of the toys were in new unopened boxes, remaining toys were in gently used condition. On the auspicious day of Ekadashi, Saturday April 6th 2013,the JSGD handed over the toys to Mr Acharya and a group of kids whose smiles and surprised faces was very heart warming. Over 70 Notebooks and pencils donated by the Detroit Jain Study Class will be used to jump start their Summer Sunday School program helping to encourage all the children to stay connected. To round up this event we were honored to grace the Ekdashi Pooja and were welcomed into their homes and hearts by all as atithi (guests).Click on the link below to see the details about the Toy Drive: http://www.jsgd.org/jainvani/Toy_Drive_JSGD.pdf
