ALICE Springs jail is onceagain full, with the overflowof prisoners being accommo-dated at the police watchhouse.
NT Department of Correc-tional Services David Harrisyesterday confirmed 15 in-
mates were being held in thepolice station, under theguard of two prison officers.
Mr Harris said the jail hadreached its capacity of 650prisoners.
‘‘As numbers fluctuatefrom day to day and pris-oners are released or makebail, prisoners will be taken
from the watch house backto the prison,’’ he said.
The news comes after theCentralian Advocate re-vealed the cap on the num-ber of inmates at AliceSprings prison was this yearincreased by 50.
In July last year, authorit-ies confirmed the prison cap-
acity was 600. But authoritieshave now said current oper-ational capacity is 650.
Alice Springs CorrectionalCentre also reached capacitylast year in the week beforethe Easter long weekend.
NT Prison Officers Associ-ation president Phil Tilbrooktold the Centralian Advocate
at the time that more thanmaximum number of pris-oners were being held at thejail.
In April 2012 Mr Tilbrooksaid the overflow from theprison had been accommo-dated at the watch house fortwo weeks.
