Jaco Pastorius Style Groove (L#89)

Your Action Plan

1. Fantastic. You've decided to take on the 'Jacogroove'! Well believe it or not one of the most helpfuland inspiring things you should now do is put JacoPastorius on your listening list. To really get deep intothis style of playing this will be an invaluable tool. Tostart you off on the right foot you should listen toJaco performing Come on Come Over, Used To Be ACha Cha and The Chicken. These can be found onYouTube.

2. Mastering the 16th note funk groove feel actuallyrelies heavily on your plucking hand technique. Evenif your having no difficulties at all playing this riff youshould still check out these 3 tutorials (links below) tomake sure your plucking hand is optimized andfunctioning as well as it should be. Watch out: this isa key mistake… so many bass players concentrate95% of their energy on what's happening with thefingerboard hand and don't give any attention to theplucking hand. This is a mistake! Make sure you'retaking both hands into account.

3. It's important that you develop your own riffs whenusing this style of playing. As homework I want youto come up with 3 original riffs that employ the '16thnote groove feel'. If you have trouble doing this andneed some inspiration there's a list of links to myother groove lessons below this 'Action List' thatshould get you inspired and ready to go!

4. Look into Jaco's influences. To really understandwhere Jaco was coming from it's important that youcan understand and can relate to not only his playing, but also the players who influenced him. Add thesepeople to your listening list - Rocco Prestia, ChuckRainey, Ron Carter, Jerry Jemmont… and, throwsome James Brown in there too!
