Hayes replaced Ponder late in the third quarter and

enjoyed success, albeit it was against the Golden Eagles second and third teams. Hayes went 7-for-8 for 32 yards and tossed one touchdown pass. The 6-0 senior also finished with an efficiency rating of 166.55.

Rushing Attack

As a team the Tigers rushed for 105 yards on 22 attempts. Keshawn Harper, a 5-11, 185-pound sophomore rushed for 69 yards on nine attempts, for an average of 7.7 yards per carry. Junior Jordan Johnson also added 20 yards on six attempts.

Turnovers

The JSU defense has a reputation of making the most of their opportunities. The squad did just that last Saturday. Junior defensive back Tyler Rogers and freshman linebacker Keontre Hamp-ton each recorded an interception. Sophomore defensive tackle Charles Anderson recovered a fumble in the second half.

Continued JSU Legend Robert Brazile 4th Tiger to Enter NFL Hall of

FameCANTON, Ohio. – Jackson State Uni-versity legend Robert Brazile took his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Brazile, the seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker from the Houston Oilers, referenced knocks and phone calls, which is how men up for induction find out they’ve been chosen for the Hall. As a Senior Category choice, Brazile found out via a phone call last year that he was a finalist, and then in February, Hall pres-ident David Baker knocked on his hotel room door in Minne-apolis to tell him he’d finally been chosen for the Hall.

“When they knocked on my door, all of my dreams came true. After all these years, I’m at home,” Brazile said.

Known as “Dr. Doom” during his playing days, Brazile was presented by his father, Robert Brazile Sr. When the two unveiled Brazile Jr.’s bronze bust, which featured the mut-ton-chop sideburns he’d worn during his playing days in the late 1970s and early 80s, Brazile Jr. gave it a kiss.

Brazile remembered his father knocking on the bathroom door when he was a child, telling him to get out of the bath-tub, and the phone call he got while at Jackson State in Mis-sissippi, letting him know the Oilers had made him the sixth pick in the 1975 draft.

He joked that his children were probably wondering which phone call he would mention, but he didn’t embarrass them.

Instead, after naming each of his children and their spouses, he said, “I’m so glad you trusted me enough to call me for anything. Never stop calling me, because I love y’all so much.”

Brazile is the fourth Jackson State football alum to be induct-ed into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He joins Walter Payton, Lem Barney, and Jackie Slater.

field and coordinated the Bulldogs’ recruitment efforts. In the spring of 2013, Hughes was named assistant head coach at Mississippi State University (MSU).

Prior to MSU, Hughes made a stop for one season at Southern Mississippi University where he coached the secondary. Hughes coached for three seasons at the Uni-versity of Mississippi.

Hughes is known as one of the top recruiters in the na-tion. 247Sports.com tabbed him as one of America’s top 10 recruiters in 2015 after Mississippi State University hauled in one of the nation’s top 16 classes per recruiting services and at Jackson State University, Hughes will focus primari-ly on recruitment as well as being the new Head Coach.

According to Rivals.com, the 22 National Letters of Intent MSU received on 2015 National Signing Day made up the Bulldogs’ best class since 2003. Fifteen of the signees hailed from the state of Mississippi. As the new Head Coach at Jackson State University, Hughes will focus on recruitment within 150-mile radius of the University.

In addition, Hughes has a knack for identifying players in the State of Mississippi that leave Mississippi to become NFL prospects. This is true with First-team All-America linebacker, Benardrick McKinney, who was once a two-star high school quarterback in Tunica, Mississippi, before being drafted by the Houston Texans in 2015.

Hughes developed the safeties corps into one of the South-eastern Conference’s hardest-hitting units. Hughes is known for a hard nose defense. Following the 2014 Or-ange Bowl season, two of Hughes’ safeties signed NFL free agent contracts, including his son, Jay. This is a testimony to his development of Mississippi’s talent at the Division I level.

Hughes was named as one of the top 25 college football recruiters in the nation by Rivals.com in 2006. His first two years were spent tutoring the defensive backs in Ox-ford while spending quality time with tight

Tony Hughes, a Mississippi native with a wealth of coaching experience in his home state, was named as the 19th Head Football Coach at Jackson State University on Monday, Dec. 14 2015.

Over the previous two seasons, Hughes has de-veloped Jackson State football into a competitive program in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Tigers have developed a reputation of a strong and stingy defense under Hughes’ watch. In an era that predicates offensive production, the 2017 Ti-ger defense never allowed an offense to easily find the endzone. The Blue and White held opponents to 171.3 passing yards per game and 6.2 yards per catch. This past season the Tigers forced seven fumbles and recorded seven interceptions. The Tigers finished 2017 with the 39 ranked defense in FCS and the 29 ranked passing defense.

In his inaugural season, Hughes led the Tigers to memorable wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Missis-sippi Valley State and Texas Southern. The JSU de-fense again proved to be a focal point and ranked 34 overall in FCS. The Tigers also finished 26 in passing defense and 32 in 3rd down efficiency.

Hughes came to Jackson State University from Mississippi State University, where he spent seven years as a key member of the Bulldogs football program. While at Mississippi State University had oversight for the safeties, the defensive back- Next Page

ends. He spent two-seasons at Louisiana Technical University and spent 10 years coaching at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, where he served as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach. Hughes coached eight players who later went on to the NFL.

Before working at Hinds, Hughes’ full time coaching position on a collegiate level was at the University of West Alabama, where he coached from 1992-1993. Hughes coached seven years in the Mississippi high school ranks, serving as the offensive coordinator and running back coach at Hattiesburg High School from 1988-1991. He spent two seasons as the defensive secondary coach and boys track coach at South Natchez High School in 1986-1987. His first high school coaching job was at Philadelphia High School in 1985.

Hughes served his country in the Unit-ed States Marine Corps from 1981-1984 and received an honorable discharge. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1984 working with the de-fensive backs. Hughes played football and ran track at Forest High School in 1974-1976 and played defensive back at St. Paul’s College 1976-1977 and was a defensive back for Southern Miss from 1977-1978.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts’ degree in Sociology in 1980. He is an active mem-ber of the Fellowship of Christian Ath-letes (FCA), serving as a member of the Mississippi FCA State Board of Directors in 1999, President of the Mississippi FCA Coaches Council in 1998 and Vice-Pres-ident of the Mississippi FCA Coaches Council in 1997.

Hughes is married to the former Marion McCaleb of Meridian, Mississippi and the couple has two sons, Jamison and Jay.
