Limerick, Ohio
In the scenic hollows of southwestern Jackson Township lies the historic little town of
Limerick. The drive to Limerick on Limerick Road (from Route 35) is a beautiful, and
somewhat exciting drive. Two narrow lanes curve around hills and cliffs on one side, while
overlooking meadows, pastures, thickets and creeks on the other. Homes are mostly scattered
with small clusters here and there. Some of these residents are descendants of the early settlers
who discovered this beautiful area. On a sunny day with blue skies, the drive to Limerick is a
memorable experience.
While we could not find an exact date as to when the town was founded, the oldest
tombstone that we were able to read in Limerick Cemetery dates back to 1817 to that of Thomas
Vansky (whom we believe is a variation in spelling of the name Vanscoy), who died when he
was 13 years old.
In 1820 census takers recorded only 54 families for all of Jackson Township. Some of
these early surnames are seen in the Limerick Cemetery – Clark, Heartley (Hartley), Martin and
Vanscoy. A decade later only 57 families were recorded, and in 1840 only 65 families were
recorded. In this day of overpopulation and crowded suburbs, the area remains rural.
The Reorganized Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints has been active in Limerick since
1880, some of the early members buried in Limerick Cemetery.
The grocery store, owned by the late Harkless Witten and now managed by daughter
Charlene and her mother Nettie, is the heart of Limerick. Neighbors and friends meet to buy
gasoline and groceries, while seating on the front patio offers a place for visitors to sit and
socialize for a while.
We first visited Limerick nearly eight years ago to visit and decorate the grave of little
2-year old Beulah Ann Longfellow who died of childhood diseases in 1928. She was the
daughter of Sarah Murphy of Richmond Dale and William Franklin Longfellow of Columbus.
We could not find her grave, but fell in love with the rolling hills and quiet hollows. Believing
we had somehow missed Beulah Ann’s tombstone we contacted the local trustees who told us
there were no records of the old graves. We returned several more times over the years, enjoying
the area, but not finding the grave.
Relentless we returned once again in 2005 and walked every inch of the cemetery
discovering that quite a few of the stones were badly weathered and some could not be read at
all. We decided to preserve the information on the tombstones by photographing them. We
returned several times in 2006 to edit and take additional photographs. Some of these badly
weathered stones can be read in the shade, others in the sun, and some could be read when we
pulled up the photograph on the computer and enlarged and enhanced it.
This publication is meant, not only to preserve the tombstones’ data and appearance, but
as a guide for others searching for the gravesites of loved ones and ancestors. Some of the rows
are irregular, so we call one row 9.5, between rows 9 and 10, with row one the row nearest to the
road.
Although we may never know where in Limerick little Beulah Ann lies, we hope this
work will enable families in the future to find an ancestor’s grave even if the tombstone is
unreadable. And don’t be surprised if you see us nearby – we will visit frequently, enjoying the
peace and the beauty of the area. We consider Limerick to be Ohio’s best-kept secret!

Grocery store owner, the late Harkless Witten, in addition to being instrumental in the building of the
Poplar Road Community Church, gave two interviews in the 1990's to the local newspaper about
Limerick's history. Below is one of the interviews contributed by daughter Charlene.
