About the awards

The Department of Education and Training (DET) recognises the importance of acknowledging excellence in educational leadership in Queensland state schools. The introduction of the Jack Pizzey Awards for Excellence in Educational Leadership provides an opportunity for the department to formally acknowledge the achievements of our exceptional schools, school leaders and teachers.

The award categories are:

The Jack Pizzey School of the Year Award

The Jack Pizzey Principal of the Year Award

The Jack Pizzey School Leadership Team of the Year Award

The Jack Pizzey Teacher of the Year Award.

The awards seek to support the ongoing development of successful nominees by incentivising relevant school-based projects or research and supporting the ongoing professional learning of school leaders and teachers.

The Awards also honour the memory of Jack Charles Allan Pizzey (19111968) who was a former state school teacher and Education Minister renowned for his commitment to secondary schooling. He was responsible for increasing the number of state high schools from 30 to 96 and for driving the creation of a second teachers college in Brisbane and planning two others. He was also involved in establishing the state's first regional university at Townsville, planning a second university in Brisbane and the decentralisation of technical education. Jack Pizzey was a former Premier of Queensland from 17 January 1968 until his death on 31 July that year.

The Jack Pizzey School of the Year AwardAward criteria

The Jack Pizzey School of the Year Award recognises a state school that has achieved exceptional outcomes for students by:

using data to monitor performance, inform practice and apply learnings to drive improvement

developing and implemented an explicit improvement agenda documented in the school plan and aligned to the requirements of the School performance assessment framework

sharing successful practice across classrooms to ensure better outcomes for students

working collaboratively with other schools to improve performance.

Supporting documentation

Please provide evidence to support your nomination. Attachments should not exceed 6 pages (including signed referee form max. file size 4MB) and may include documented evidence of:

exemplary/innovative curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting practices in response to identified student learning needs

improved student achievement, engagement and wellbeing

exemplary/innovative leadership practices

parent or community partnership that has led to positive academic, social and cultural outcomes

sustainability and effective resource management

school improvement agenda.

Prize money

The value of this award is $50,000 for the successful school to:

undertake a school or cluster based project that further enhances innovative teaching and learning practices and/or effective engagement of parents and the school

implement a school staff professional learning program.

The program or initiative undertaken must not be retrospective

Recipients should be aware of any fringe benefit tax (FBT) implications when planning their professional development activity as certain types of expenditure such as Commonwealth-supported university courses and certain equipment purchases may incur FBT. Eligibility

The award is open to all Queensland state schools including: Primary schools; secondary schools; P10/12 schools; special schools; Queensland academies; schools of distance education and; alternative education centres.

The Jack Pizzey Principal of the Year AwardAward criteria

The Jack Pizzey Principal of the Year Award seeks to recognise an outstanding state school principal who has delivered exceptional opportunities and outcomes for state school students by:

leading teaching and learning

supporting all staff to achieve high standards of professionalism and develop leadership capability

influencing beyond the school to contribute to system-wide innovation, learning and improvement.

Supporting documentation

Please provide evidence to support your nomination. Attachments should not exceed 6 pages (including signed referee form max. file size 4MB) and may include documented evidence of:

curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting practices in response to identified student learning needs

improved student achievement, engagement and wellbeing

staff learning and development

sustainability and effective resource management.

Prize money

The value of this award is $15,000 to support the successful principal to undertake research or professional learnings in a relevant field. This includes funding activities such as conference attendance, travel, accommodation and staff replacement. The program or initiative undertaken must not be retrospective.

Recipients should be aware of any fringe benefit tax (FBT) implications when planning their professional development activity as certain types of expenditure such as Commonwealth-supported university courses and certain equipment purchases may incur FBT. Contact the Taxation team on 1300 656 380 or [email protected] for more information.

Eligibility

This award is open to all principals currently employed in Queensland state schools.

Please note: Nominees must be working in the role of principal at the time of nomination. In addition, acting principals who have acted in the role for a continuous period of greater than 12 months are also eligible to be nominated or to self-nominate for this award.

The Jack Pizzey School Leadership Team of the Year AwardAward criteria

The Jack Pizzey School Leadership Team of the Year Award seeks to recognise an outstanding state school leadership team that has fostered a culture of high performance and continuous improvement for Queensland state school students by:

innovating as lead learners in their school or cluster of schools

collaborating within and beyond their school to make sure that a great school has a great school down the road with great teachers

elevating students, and teachers to greater levels of success.

Supporting documentation

Please provide evidence to support your nomination. Attachments should not exceed 6 pages (including signed referee form max. file size 4MB) and may include documented evidence of:

curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting practices in response to identified student learning needs

improved student achievement, engagement and wellbeing

staff learning and development

parent or community partnerships that have led to positive academic, social and cultural outcomes

sustainability and effective resource management.

Prize money

The value of this award is $25,000 to support the successful school leadership team to document and share their innovative leadership practice with other school communities and/or to investigate an area of identified need in their school community.

The funds may be used to cover costs associated with travel, accommodation, staff replacement, professional development or any other support required to document and share their innovative leadership practice and investigate the area of identified need. The program or initiative undertaken must not be retrospective.

Recipients should be aware of any fringe benefit tax (FBT) implications when planning their professional development activity as certain types of expenditure such as Commonwealth-supported university courses and certain equipment purchases may incur FBT. Eligibility

All Queensland state school leadership teams are eligible to be nominated or to self-nominate for this award. The school leadership team should not consist of more than 10 members. Exceptional circumstances may be considered at the discretion of the selection panel. Leadership teams from across schools and clusters can apply.

Please note: All team members must be employed in a Queensland state school at the time of nomination.

The Jack Pizzey Teacher of the Year AwardAward criteria

The Jack Pizzey Teacher of the Year Award seeks to recognise an outstanding state school teacher who has demonstrated innovative teaching methods to significantly improve student learning outcomes, and has:

developed extensive professional knowledge in their area of specialty of the Australian Curriculum including a deep understanding of the P-12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework

developed exemplary professional practice

engaged professionally with colleagues, and contributed significantly to the capability development of colleagues in their educational setting.

Please provide evidence to support your nomination. Attachments should not exceed 6 pages (including signed referee form max. file size 4MB) and may include documented evidence of:

curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting practices in response to identified student learning needs

sharing best practice with colleagues

improved student achievement, engagement and wellbeing

performance planning and professional learning and development

sustainability and effective resource management.

Prize money

The value of this award is $15,000 to support the successful teacher to undertake research or professional learnings in a relevant field. This includes funding activities such as conference attendance, travel, accommodation and staff replacement. The program or initiative undertaken must not be retrospective.

Recipients should be aware of any fringe benefit tax (FBT) implications when planning their professional development activity as certain types of expenditure such as Commonwealth-supported university courses and certain equipment purchases may incur FBT. This award is open to all teachers currently employed in Queensland state schools.

Please note: Nominees must be working in the role of teacher at the time of nomination. In addition, teachers who have been employed on a contract for a continuous period of greater than 12 months are also eligible to be nominated or to self-nominate for this award.

Nomination processNominations

All Queensland state schools, state school principals, leadership teams and teachers are encouraged to self-nominate. Nominations are also welcome from departmental staff including regional directors, teachers and principals; Parents & Citizens Associations (P&Cs); parents and school communities.

All nominations should be contemporary and current

Please submit nominations online via the Jack Pizzey website at www.jackpizzeyawards.dete.qld.gov.au by 5 pm on Friday 17 July 2015.

The department reserves the right to use all or part of any material, including submissions, photographs and video for any communication and marketing activities. Copyright of any materials produced during, or as a result, of the awards is owned by the department.

Nomination statement

Each nomination requires a statement of up to 1000 words outlining the rationale for nomination in terms of the relevant award criteria, explaining why the school, leadership team, principal or teacher should be considered for the award. The statement should also outline the nominees current role in a Queensland state school.

The person or people nominating must complete the statement.

Overview of the state school context

The nomination also requires an overview of up to 250 words explaining the context of the school, along with relevant achievements, special focus areas and the socioeconomic profile of the school.

Referees

To support the nomination, please provide the contact details of two professional referees. One of these referees must be the regional director of the nominee. For IPS schools, the Director-Generals delegated officer is your regions Regional Director.

Suitable second referees include:

the school principal (in the case of the Teacher of the Year and School Leadership Team of the Year) ,

a senior colleague (in the case of the Principal of the Year Award)

a representative of the P&C Association or a member of local government (in the case of School of the Year).

If the nomination is shortlisted, referees may be contacted by a member of the selection panel. Please ensure both referees are familiar with and have signed the nomination form. This must be included in the supporting documentation uploaded with the nomination.

Submitting the nomination

Please lodge your nomination electronically via the Jack Pizzey Awards nominations portal (available on the Jack Pizzey Awards website) at www.jackpizzeyawards.dete.qld.gov.au . Download the relevant referee form and electronically submit by 5 pm on Friday 17 July 2015.

1. On the Jack Pizzey Awards website click on Nominate Now, to create an account.

2. Create an account Complete all mandatory fields in create new account form.

a. Ensure you have read, understood and ticked the privacy statement prior to clicking the create account button

b. Once an account has been created, an automated email verifying your account will be sent to your nominated email address.

3. How to submit a nomination nominations may be lodged in two ways:

a. directly via the Jack Pizzey Awards website and select the Nominate Now button then complete the login details located on the right-hand side of the screen (email address and password); or

b. by clicking on the hyperlink provided in your account creation confirmation email and complete login details as above.

c. Start your nomination by clicking the Add New Entry button below, you will be guided through the nomination form. Nominations in progress or completed may be modified, deleted or printed for your records by clicking on the appropriate Actions link.

4. Click the relevant radio button to select an award category. An overview of the award category and criteria will be displayed. Click on the save and continue button.

5. Enter your Nomination Details by completing all mandatory fields. Once completed, click the save and continue button at the bottom of the screen to progress to the Nomination Statement tab.

a. Should you wish to save and complete your nomination at a later time click on the save and go to home button

6. On the Nomination Statement tab an overview of the criteria will be displayed. In the free text box please provide a brief rationale to support your nomination (max. 1 000 words). A word counter is located at the bottom right. Click on save and continue button to progress to the School Profile tab.

7. On the School Profile tab in the free text box please provide an overview of the state school's context including: relevant achievements, special focus areas and socio-economic profile (max. 250 words). A word counter is located at the bottom right. Click on save and continue button to progress to the Referees tab.

8. Complete all details on the Referees tab and click save and continue to progress to the Supporting Documentation tab.

9. Supporting documentation - You may only attach ONE .pdf file to support your nomination. This .pdf file must include the signed referee form and not exceed 6 pages in length or be greater 4MB in size. Referee forms are available on the Jack Pizzey Awards website.

a. For a list of suggested evidence to support your nomination, refer to the relevant award category within these guidelines.

b. Click save and continue to progress to the Confirmation tab.

10. Please read and ensure you understand and agree to the guideline requirements outlined in the 2015 Jack Pizzey Awards Guidelines document.

a. Tick the checkbox

b. Click submit entry

c. Once you have submitted your nomination you will receive an auto generated email to confirm you have successfully uploaded and submitted your nomination.

d. Your nomination will be progressed to the selection panel for consideration.

e. You may add, edit or withdraw your nomination prior to the closing date of 17 July 2015.

To Add, Edit, Download/Print or Withdraw/Delete a nomination

Ensure you are logged in to your account. Details of your nomination/s will be displayed.

To add a nomination click on the yellow Add New Entry button

To edit a nomination, click on the blue Modify button located under actions heading

To Download/Print a nomination, click on the green button located under actions heading

To withdraw a nomination, click on the red Delete button located under actions heading and confirm deletion

Judging process

Nominations will be shortlisted based on the information supplied through the application process. Short-listed nominations may be invited to participate in a short interview with the selection panel. Additional information may include:

detailed information about, or evidence to support the rationale for the nomination

an outline of how the awards funds will be used if successful

statements of support from nominated referees.

Shortlisted applicants will be notified in September 2015. They will receive information about making travel arrangements to attend the Annual Showcase gala event on 30 October 2015 at which the winners will be announced.

The department reserves the right to not present an award.
