Jack Barbash was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 1, 1910. He received his B.S. fromNew York University in 1932 and an M.A. in Economics from New York University in 1937.
Mr. Barbash has held a variety of positions in the federal government, the labor movement, andacademia. He worked for the New York Department of Labor from 1937-1940 as both aninvestigator (1937-1939) and an economist for the National Labor Relations Board (1939-1940).During World War II, he worked in the U.S. Office of Education from 1940-1945 as well asserving on the War Production Board from 1943-1945. At the conclusion of the war he workedin the Department of Labor until 1949, when he became the staff director of the U.S. Senate Sub-Committee on Labor and Labor Management Relations. He held this position until 1953.
While working on the Labor and Labor Management Sub-Committee, Mr. Barbash began hiswork in the labor movement when he worked as a Research and Education Director for theAmalgamated Meat Cutters Union from 1948-1949 and in the same capacity for the AFL-CIOIndustrial Union Department from 1955-1957. He also worked as an economist for the CIOLegal Department from 1953-1955.
Mr. Barbash left the AFL-CIO in 1957 and joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsinwhere he remained until his retirement in 1981 as Emeritus Professor of Economics andIndustrial Relations. He is the author of numerous books on U.S. trade unions and workers,including Apprenticeship Admittance Requirements in Trade Unions in New York City, publishedin 1936, andTheories and Concepts in Comparative Industrial Relations, published in 1989. Healso served on the editorial board of the Journal of Economic Issues from 1970 to 1975 and wasthe President of the University of Wisconsin branch of the AAUP from 1970-1971. Mr. Barbashdied in May, 1994.
The Jack Barbash Collection contains an extensive assortment of articles, books, journals,government reports, trade union reports and documents, university (University of Wisconsin andothers) reports, industrial relations and other materials relating to the labor movement and radicalorganizations. The contents of the collection are secondary sources which served as Mr.Barbash’s personal resource files and cover the entire span of his long career, from the early1930s to the 1980s.
