The first step required is to select the Seasonmaster model that will deliver the volume (CFM) of air to be circulated. However, in cases where two or more models will handle the required CFM the selection will be further determined by such factors as fan outlet velocity, coil face velocity, horsepower, and space limitations. For example, assume that a Seasonmaster is to be selected to meet the following specifications:

Air Volume (Std. Air) Maximum Coil Face Velocity. . . . . . . . Maximum Fan Outlet Velocity . . . . . . .

3500 CFM 500 FPM

1600 FPM

From the fan performance data on pages 12 and 13, it is found that an AC116, AC211 and AC213 will

Direct expansion coil selection consists basically of determining the number of rows required. For example, assume that a direct expansion coil is required for an AC211 unit to meet the following specifications:

Air Volume (Std. Air) . . . . . . 3500 CFM Air Entering Coil . . . . . 82.3°F DB & 68.0°F WB Totalload...... 109,900BTU/HR Sensible load . . . . . . . . . . 7 4,7 50 BTU /HR Refrigerant Temperature. . . . . . . . . . 45°F Refrigerant . . . . . . . . . . . . . Freon-12

Since the direct expansion:coil ratings on pages 6 and 7 are only applicable for sensible-total ratios of .90 or less, it must first be determined if this problem falls into that category (for sensible-total ratios greater than .90 refer to the factory).

A. Sensible-Total Ratio Sensible load

Total load

= 74,750 BTU/HR = .68 109,900 BTU/HR

Therefore, the direct expansion coil ratings on pages 6 and 7 may be used in the solution of this problem. As these ratings are expressed in tons per sq. ft. of coil face area at various coil face velocities, the next steps are to determine these values. From the fan performance table on page 12 or the general specifications table on page 23, it is found that the AC211 unit has 7.1 sq. ft. of coil face area.

Total load (BTU/Hr.) B. Tons Per Sq. Ft.

12,000 x Coil Face Area

109,900 = 1.29 12,QQQ X 7.1

CFM C. Coil Face Velocity

Coil Face Area

= 3

'500

= 493 FPM 7.1

Coil face velocities from 400 through 600 FPM in 25 FPM increments are tabulated in the direct expansion coil ratings on pages 6 and 7. To simplify the use of these ratings it is suggested that the tabulated coil face velocity nearest to the actual coil face velocity be used rather than interpolating as the error introduced by this procedure is negligible. Therefore, in this example a coil face velocity of 500 FPM will be used.

deliver the specified air volume. However, the AC211 best meets the specifications of coil face velocity and fan outlet velocity and, therefore, is selected.

The selection of a horizontal or vertical Seasonmaster can now be made to best suit the job requirements as all models are available in both types. For fan discharge arrangements and accessories available refer to pages 18 through 22.

Having established the Seasonmaster model required the coil selection is then possible. The method of direct expansion cooling coil selection is shown below (see pages 8 and 15 for water coil selection and page 16 for steam coil selection).

D. Now referring to the direct expansion ratings for 45°F refrigerant on page 7, it is found that with a 68°F entering air wet bulb temperature and a 500 FPM coil face velocity, a 4-row coil will provide the required cooling capacity (1.30 tons per sq. ft. vs. 1.29 tons per sq. ft. required). Therefore, the 4-row coil is adequate.

To determine the leaving air temperatures and BTU /Hr. capacities proceed as follows:

E. The leaving wet bulb temperature is read directly from the direct expansion coil ratings on page 7. In this case with a 45°F refrigerant, 68°F entering air wet bulb, 500 FPM coil face velocity, and 4-row coil, the leaving wet bulb is found to be 58.6°F.

F. The leaving dry bulb is determined by the wet bulb depression method as follows:

lvg. Air D.B.

Initial Depression

Factor

lvg. Air D.B.

G. Total BTU /Hr.

H. Sensible BTU /Hr.

= lvg. W.B. +(Initial Depression x Factor)

=Ent. Air D.B.- Ent. Air W.B. =82.3- 68.0 =14.3

=.28 (From table 1 below)

=58.6 + (14.3 X .28) =58.6 + 4.0 =62.6°F

=Tons/Sq. Ft. x 1 2000 x coil face area =1.30 X 12QQQ X 7.1 =110,750 BTU/Hr.

= CFM x 1. 09 x (Ent. Air D. B. -lvg. Air D. B.) =35,QQQ X 1.09 X (82.3- 62.6) =75,150 BTU/Hr.

C. On a McQuay psychometric chart draw a straight line from

the point representing the entering air condition to a point

on the saturation line midway between the entering water

temperature and the leaving wet bulb temperature (52.4

on the saturation line). At the intersection of the line so

drawn and the 56.8° wet bulb line read:

leaving Dry Bulb = 59.5°

D. With 59.5° leaving Dry Bulb:

Sensible BTU/HR = CFM x 1.09 x T.D. Temperature Drop (TO) = Ent. D.B. - lvg. D.B.

= 85 - 59.5 = 25.5 Sensible BTU /HR = 8000 X 1.09 X 25.5

Coil Face Area x W.S.F. x M.E.D. x U 350,000

16.0 X 1.20 X 18.16 X 177 = 5.64

Use 6 row coil (Model W86 or C86)

N. Assume W86 Coil: Water Pressure Drop = P x Rows x Corr. Factor

P = 1.75 (from Fig. 3, Page 9) Rows = 6

Corr. Factor 1.272 (from Table 4, Page 9) P.O. = 1.75 X 6 X 1.272

= 13.4 Ft. of Water

If a lower pressure drop were required it would be necessary to recalculate for a double serpentine coil as follows:

P. Tubes Fed = 31 (from Table below)

Q. Water Velocity 70 X 500

437 X 31 = 2.59 F.P.S.

R. "U" Factor = 161 (from Fig. 2, Page 9)

350,000 S. Rows Deep =

16.0 X 1.20 X 18.16 X 161 = 6.24 use 8 row coil (Model WD88)

Double serpentine coils must have an even number of rows deep and an 8 row coil is recommended in lieu of a 6 row because an allowance should always be made for fouling (liming, lint, etc.).

T. Water Pressure Drop = .54 x 8 x .666 = 2.88 Ft. of Water

To determine the motor horsepower required to operate a unit proceed as follows:

SPECIFIED (or previously determined):

AC216 Seasonmcster 7200 CFM

Model 84 Direct Expansion Coil (wet).

Combination Mixing Box end Flat Filter Section with Cleona ble Filters. Y2" External Static

PROCEDURE:

A. Since the air friction of all unit components is expressed using the coil face velocity as a base it is first necessary to calculate this value.

Coil Face Velocity CFM

Coil Face Area

7200 13.1 sq. ft.

550 FPM

B. Referring to Table 7 below the following air frictions for unit components are found:

Model 84 Direct Expansion Coil (wet) ...••. 300 x 1.35 = .405 Model 72 Steam Coil.... • • • • • • • . . • • • • . . . . • . • . . . . • • . 1 32 Flat Filter Section with Cleanable Filters............... .260

Mixing Box •..•.••••••••••••••••.•••..•.•.••••••• .060

Unit Friction = .857" water

C. Total Static Pressure= Unit Friction + External Static

=.857 + .500 = 1.357" water Hence, total static fells between 1\4" end 1 %" water.

D. Now, referring to the Fan Performance Tables on Pages 12 and 13, it is found that an AC216 Seasonmaster handling 7205 CFM requires

2.62 BHP against 1\4" water total static 2. 83 BHP against 1 %" water total static

thus, a 3 H.P. motor is required for this application.

E. If it is desired to determine the exact BHP and fan RPM it would be necessary to interpolate.

I. From Fig. 6 below, it is found that a W82 water coil, at a coil velocity of 600 FPM and a GPM/Feed of 3.5 will provide the required air temp. rise/ 0 TD (.475 vs .. 467 required). Therefore, a W82 coil is selected.

J. To determine the water pressure drop in ft. of water use Fig. 4. Multiply the value read directly from the curve by the proper conversion factor from the inset table. In this case the water pressure drop equals 2.35x 1.209 = 2. 84 ft. of water.

Page 16: #J3 SEASON MASTER - Daikin Applied · (central station air conditioner) catalog no. 505 april 1953 accessories . with water coil steam coil face and by-pass flat filter section vertical

Steam coil selection consists of determining the "coil model" which will adequately provide the heating capacity required and the "coil type" best suited for the application. For example, assume that a steam coil is required for an AC215 Seasonmaster to meet the following specifications:

Air Volume (Std. Air)

Steam Pressure . . .

Entering Air Temperature

Leaving Air Temperature

Heating Load. .

Type of Control

6000 CFM

10 PSIG

30° F.

115° F.

555,900 BTU/HR.

Modulated steam valve

1. The "coil model" is determined from the base temperature rise curves on the opposite page. As these curves are plotted in base temperature rises at 5 psig steam and ooF entering air the proper conversion factor must be applied.

A. Req'd. Base Temp. Rise

Req'd. Temp. Rise

CFM Coil Face Area

= 10.8 Sq. Ft. (From page 23)

= 6000

= 556 FPM 10.8

C. Now referring to Fig. 7 on the opposite page, it will be found that the inters=ction of the 556 FPM coil face velocity and 92.2°F base temperature rise lines falls between a model 91 and 72; therefore, a model 72 steam coil is selected to provide the required heating capacity.

To determine the actual leaving air temperature and BTU /HR capacity, proceed as follows:

D. Actual Lvg. Air Temp. = Ent. Air Temp. + Actual Temp. Rise

Actual Temp. Rise =Actual Base Temp. Rise x Conversion Factor

Actual Base Temp. Rise =95°F (From intersection of 556 FPM

coil face velocity line and model 72 curve in Fig 7).

=95°F X .922

=30° + 87.6

= CFM x 1. 09 x Actual Temp. Rise =6000 X 1.09 X 87.6 =572,900

2. There are two types of steam coils available.' Type S" coils are of the single tube type and are designed for general purpose heating. "Type J" coils are of the double tube type and are recommended for applications requiring modulated steam control with maximum protection against freeze-up. Inasmuch as the entering air temperature for this application is below 32°F and modulating steam control is to be used, the "Type J" should be selected.
