MARCH 2017
Share the Joy of Cooking
Many people today have less time to prepare meals and fewer cooking skills. They may eat meals away from home and
spend money on foods that are not nutritious. When meals are cooked at home, you have more control over your nutrition and food budget. If you are a good cook, consider sharing some of your talents to help oth-ers learn to cook. Volunteer
opportunities to work with adults and children in cooking programs are increasing in many communities. Some people just need ideas and recipes to get them started. Encourage everyone to serve plenty of fruits and vegetables for colorful, healthy meals. Helping someone change behav-iors takes time and patience. You might plan to go grocery shopping together and share recipes and meal ideas. Teach them about the value of making a grocery list and looking for items on sale to keep a well-stocked pantry while saving money. (Continued on page 2)

Lunch & Learn
Everyone is invited to join
us at the Irvington Library
on the 3rd Wednesday of
each month for a
lite lunch (noon ct)
and learning session.
This month’s
lesson topic—
Homemade Bread
Basic cooking skills can be shared through making soups, salads and breads. Learning to make comfort foods like a great apple crisp or a pot of homemade potato soup is empowering for people who have not spent much time in a kitchen. Cooking together is a great family activity for grandparents, parents and children. With a little training and help, teenagers can learn to prepare family dinners which helps them move toward independence.
To encourage cooking, the Extension Office is offering basic cooking classes throughout the winter and spring. Call 270-756-2182 to register.

From Your Homemaker President:
I hope all of you enjoyed your holidays and entered 2017 with an enthusiastic outlook
for the rest of this homemaker year! We have laid many plans for upcoming events, and
we are anticipating a wonderful night with our March International Dinner with Daniele
Cubic, from the Valley View Club in Irvington, speaking and sharing pictures of her
childhood in the West Indies. Bring an international dish or your favorite potluck delight;
and some of our 4-H Cooking Club members may also prepare some tasty recipes for us!
Some overseas vacation pictures will be shared with us by Vicki Ramsier from the
Countryside Club too. Remember to invite community folks to this event!
Janet Hobbs, from Meade County, is our newly elected Lincoln Tail Association
president for a three year term. Our own Karen Yerkey has accepted the position of
secretary too. Our county involvement with the KEHA Pillowcase and Quilt project for
the Center for Courageous Kids is going very well! We look forward to the next three
great years with LTA!
Try some of the new recipes being shared in our homemaker newsletters. A quilting
class is being offered soon, and our KEHA meeting in Owensboro is looking to be well
attended because we are in such close proximity this year!. Owensboro Guide Booklets
may be picked up at the extension office for those attending the state meeting. The
booklets contain information on everything visitors would like to know about
Owensboro. Get your reservations for banquets and classes mailed in as soon as possible!
We have been asked to share a display about our Breckinridge County Sewing Circle
at the KEHA meeting this year. On March 14 we will be making beautiful lace accents to
be used as jewelry, or displayed as decorations in our homes. Many of the items we have
made over the past three years will be shown at the state meeting. Our March meeting
will begin our fourth year of the Sewing Circle. Over one thousand men, women and
children have come to our monthly meetings, or been taught through classes we have
traveled to in six surrounding counties.
Members have shared our knowledge of heirloom needlework in area schools, in their
churches, in doctor’s waiting rooms, in restaurants where we were allowed to teach, and
in many other places. Many of these art forms were close to being lost, but have now
found new life through many folks sharing what they have learned with family and
friends all along their paths. Many pieces of our needlework have found their way to
South Africa, Japan, Puerto Rico, and from coast to coast in the United States! Several
ladies have taught their family members in these countries and we are thrilled to see how
far our efforts of teaching these techniques are reaching out to! We thank our county
residents for bringing us books, fabric and many other supplies they no longer use. We
also thank the County Extension for allowing us to meet and keep this worthwhile
endeavor passing on to future generations.
Homemakers have a wonderful future ourselves with Kentucky’s County Extensions!
Sincerely yours,
Carolyn French
