The Economics of ImmigrationTheory and Policy

The Economics of Immigration is written as a both a reference for researchers and as a textbook on the economics of immigration. It is aimed at two audiences: (1) researchers who are interested in learning more about how economists approach the study of human migration flows; and (2) graduate students taking a course on migration or a labor economics course where immigration is one of the subfields studied. The book covers the economic theory of immigration, which explains why people move across borders and details the consequences of such movements for the source and destination economies. The book also describes immigration policy, providing both a history of immigration policy in a variety of countries and using the economic theory of immigration to explain the determinants and consequences of the poli-cies. The timing of this book coincides with the emergence of immigration as a major political and economic issue in the USA, Japan Europe and many developing countries.

Corporate GovernanceRecent Developments and New Trends

The current crisis has rocked the financial system worldwide and has cast doubt on the effective-ness of the existing regulatory regime. Thousands of firms have gone bankrupt and many financial institutions were bailed out by governments. The effects of the crisis have shaken emerging and developing markets alike and have not spared neither small nor large businesses. Many scholars and practitioners attribute the roots of the crisis to failures and weaknesses in the way corporate governance has been practiced since the mid-1990s. Lax board oversight of top management, short-termism and self-interested behavior have been fingered as the culprits behind recent finan-cial turmoil.

Features 7 An updated overview of corporate governance (codes and practices) around the world and its recent evolution 7 The findings of a substantial amount of academic and professional research into the impacts of the global financial crisis on corporate governance 7 Insightful discussions of various issues regarding the future of corporate governance

Infrastructure Public-Private PartnershipsDecision, Management and Development

Economic development and social welfare depend on the existence of effective and efficient infra-structure systems, particularly in health, energy, transportation and water, many of which are developed and managed through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). However, empirical evidence suggests some pitfalls in the use of these PPP arrangements. This book addresses these issues, focusing on mostly three key questions: How to improve the robustness of the decision-making process leading to the option of PPP? How to im-prove contract management as the longest phase of the process? How can contracts be improved to accommodate uncertainty and avoid harmful renegotiations? The authors explore the concept of flexible contracts, the uncertainty modeling for improving the robustness of the decision-making process, and develop an overall framework for effective contract management, along with a comprehensive analysis of current renegotiation patterns.

Features 7 Novel techniques for incorporating uncertainty in Public Sector Comparator calculation 7 Guide for PPP contract management 7 Unique frame-work for contract renegotiation analysis

Open EvaluationIntegrating Users into the Selection of New Product Ideas

Selecting new product or service ideas that are worthwhile to be  exploited has always been a ma-jor challenge to firms of all kinds. Recent develop-ments, however, add a new facet to the evaluation challenge. Initiatives such as innovation contests, in which interested users may submit their ideas or solutions to firm relevant problems, frequently lead to several tens of thousands of submissions. Consequently, solutions are needed that help identifying the most promising ideas. The book “Open Evaluation” proposes a potential solution: integrating external stakeholders into the assess-ment of product and service ideas by means of IT, i.e. open evaluation. Based on both qualitative and quantitative research, the author examines design options, strategies, and the capacity of open evaluation to efficiently and effectively support decision-making for innovation.

Stakeholder Trust in Family Businesses Despite broad anecdotal evidence, little is known about the antecedents and outcomes of stakehold-er trust when dealing with a family business. The topic has received little systematic attention, which is surprising given its importance as a potential competitive advantage for family businesses and the influence of family businesses in many markets around the world. In his dissertation, Hannes Hauswald tries to address this gap. In the course of three essays, he explores what drives stake-holder trust when dealing with family businesses. Furthermore, he sheds light on the outcomes of stakeholder trust for family businesses and relevant contingency factors.

Asset Allocation Considerations for Pension Insurance FundsTheoretical Analysis and Empirical Evidence

The central research objective of the dissertation is to assess the suitability of Social Responsible Investments (SRIs) as well as alternative invest-ments for the strategic asset allocation of German Pension Insurance Funds (Pensionskassen). Using a Vector Error Correction model, we estimate the data generating process of the underlying input variables. A bootstrap simulation allows generating future return paths of the underly-ing portfolios. These return distributions will subsequently be used as input for different asset allocation strategies. The empirical results of our research study offer valuable conclusions: (1) SRI-structured portfolios consistently perform better than conventional portfolios, (2) includ-ing alternative investments has a beneficial effect on the risk-return distribution and (3) derivative overlay structures mitigate downside risk exposure without impacting average fund performance.

The Economic Partnership Between India and Taiwan in a Post-ECFA EcosystemThe partnership between India and Taiwan is situated in a virtual maze of complex political factors. Given the core issue of contestation of Taiwan’s political status in world affairs and India’s adherence to the “One China” policy, the relation-ship remains a fragile one for both partners. In recent years, Taiwan has signed the Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with Mainland China.

Features 7 In-depth coverage of the political economy of two key relationships, namely India-Taiwan and Mainland China-Taiwan 7 Provides non-technical, engaging analysis and summarizes the extant literature (primary and secondary) on India-Taiwan relations 7 Offers quick references to the theoretical underpinnings of international political economy and its applicability in Interna-tional Relations

Corporate PerformanceA Ratio-Based Approach to Country and Industry Analyses

This book presents the comparative evaluation of international and industrial factors affecting the financial condition of enterprises. In the theoreti-cal part, the results of previous research on the oc-currence of the country and industry effect in the financial health of companies are reviewed. The aim of the empirical study is to determine such factors – national or industrial ones – that have a greater impact on the corporate performance in the selected European Union countries. Corporate performance is measured and described with the use of a large set of fundamental ratios. Corporate performance is therefore treated as a more com-plex matter influenced by such aspects as profit-ability, liquidity, working capital and solvency.

Features 7 Analyzes corporate performance by consid-ering fundamental ratios in addition to stock returns 7 Includes enterprises of all sizes, and not just large public companies 7 Updates and broadens the study of country and industry effect within the European Union

Contents Corporate performance interpretation and mea-suring problems.- Country and industry factors as determinants of corporate performance.- Analysis of the corporate performance diversity in the selected European Union countries.- Cross-industry and cross-country comparative cluster analysis.- Factors affecting corporate performance in countries and industries.

The Quality of Growth and Poverty Reduction in ChinaThe rapid growth over the past three decades has been instrumental in lifting over 600 million peo-ple in China out of poverty People want to know why and how it happened.
