For a shopping experience with adifference then head for the labyrinth thatis the bazaar. From Konak Square, headdown Anafartalar Caddesi. This is the mainstreet where you’ll find a host of tradersselling the clothes, shoes and jewelleryneeded for that night on the town.

The streets to the south of Anafartarlar

Caddesi, particularly Fevzipasa Bulgari is afeast of leather goods, for which Izmir isfamous. Pick up a bag, a jacket or a beltbut be ready to barter.

For antiques and traditional craftwork,head for the atmospheric Kizlaragasi Han.This covered market is a fine example ofOttoman architecture where you will findartisans selling everything from copperkitchen utensils, to kilims. If the bustle of the market isn’t for you andyou like your shopping experience a littlemore sedate, then head for the boutiqueson the Kordon promenade in Alsancak andon Cumhuriyet Avenue near to PassportIskelesi.

Buses leave from the THY stand atMenderes airport and drop off at the THYterminal in the Buyek Efes hotel onGaziosmanpasa Bulvari. Every 20 – 30 min(4.45am – 8.30/9.30pm when the last THYflight is leaving). The journey takes 30mins and costs 4 YTL.

A taxi between Menderes airport and thecity centre should cost no more than 40YTL.

Public TransportDolmus are minibuses that acts as acollective, less expensive taxi service. Flagthese down in the street. Minimal charge.

Ferries shuttles between Konak andAlsancak. A return ticket across the bay toKarsiyaka will cost 3YTL. The returncrossing takes 1hr 15 mins.

The metro is probably the least effectiveway of getting around Izmir 1YTL.
