PEACE PROCESSAbidjan, 9 August 2006The United Nations Operation inCote dIvoire(UNOCI) is deeply concerned bythe recent statements made bycertain politicalleaders, which could set back thepeace process.

These statements are all themore difficult to understand sincethey come at acritical stage in theimplementation of the roadmap, which had gained freshimpetus after the high-levelmeeting held on 5 July 2006 inYamoussoukro atthe initiative of the UN Secretary-

General.Progress was recorded in theareas of identification - with thelaunch of themobile courts - disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration(with the start

of pre-grouping, which will bemonitored by the quadripartitecommitteecreated for this purpose), thebeginning of the dismantling ofmilitias, and theongoing redeployment of publicservants. These achievements, thoughextremely important, are stillfragile and should therefore beconsolidated by allpolitical actors in the country.UNOCI calls on all Ivorian parties

to use dialogue to overcome theirmisunderstandings anddifferences. UNOCI appeals toall actors in the Ivoriancrisis to maintain their supportfor, commitment to andparticipation in thepeace process as there is noother way of achieving a viableand lastingsolution to the crisis.
