TYPES OF SAE AEROSPACE STANDARDS
11
AS Aerospace Standards – specific performance requirements used for design standards, parts standards, minimum performance standards, quality and other areas conforming to broadly accepted engineering practices or specs for a material, product, process, procedure or test method AMS Aerospace Material Specifications – specific performance requirements for material and process specifications ARP Aerospace Recommended Practices – documentations of practice, procedures, and technology that are intended as guides to standard engineering practices. May be of a more general nature or propound data that have not yet gained broad acceptance. AIR Aerospace Information Reports – compilations of engineering reference data, historical information, or educational material useful to the technical community

IVHM, Maintenance Credits and Safety
A new SAE document addressing IVHM, Maintenance Credits and Safety is in development. This will look at the role IVHM may be able to play in the safety case – and will leverage synergies with the Safety Management community and safety data.
No Fault Found
While the technology development is progressing, supported by standards, the next frontier is implementation.
Reduction or elimination of No Fault Found is a key component, and will help to prove the reliability of the system necessary to take “credit” for the use of IVHM – a major driver for airlines. A new SAE book exploring NFF was published in September 2015.

• The shift from the sale of products to the sale of services requires IVHM. • Much progress has been made in this field over the last 10 years, in many
different sectors. • SAE is putting aerospace standards in place for IVHM at the vehicle level,
along with education and training. • The goals that are being set for the future could affect how IVHM relates to
maintenance and safety.
